Who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress?
We have become familiar with the terminology of PTSD in the context of veterans returning from combat in Iraq or Afghanistan. Many other situations besides the horrors of war can give rise to post traumatic stress, however. People who witness a school shooting or lose a loved one in a crash, victims of family violence or rape can all succumb. But with compassionate treatment, they can overcome the maladaptive ways in which their bodies try to protect them.
Who is the expert?
Bessel van der Kolk, MD, is a leading researcher and clinician in the field of traumatic stress. He is founder and medical director of the Trauma Center in Boston, MA, and professor in the department of psychiatry at Boston University Medical School.
Dr. van der Kolk is co-director of the Complex Trauma Treatment Network of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.
His book is The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma (2014).
