Hi, it seems like a lot of people here are not dosed properly. I have been on Armour for about seven years, I think it is. It has been an absolute godsend. Previously I took Synthroid 125, I think it was. It didn’t work and I was still very hypothyroid. I never felt the hunger signal, just sort of felt low blood sugar and ate because of that.

I also rarely went to the bathroom. Then came Armour and I take 60 in the morning 60 in the evening with extra 15 mg tablets with each dose. I feel 100% better. Armour suppresses your TSH to almost zero so your doctor cannot be stunned by that and has to order workup for Free T4 and T3 values to make sure they are mid-upper range.

That is when you will feel right. Good luck!

Hi been taking Armour Thyroid for a little over a month 30 ml or mg I forgot, my skin was dry, never weighed over 123 pds was up to 140 never wow on Armour I’m down to 135, feel better my skin is better, I had borderline hypo, then next test normal, but 2 drs told me to take it.

I have the signs of it & the tests don’t always come out right, so I like it & I’m thankful. Why all the negative feedback, this really horrible for some of you? I will give it a huge thumbs up now, hope you all feel the way you should :)

Had noticeably to me before hair loss could see the red in my scalp after washing. This was not normal with Armour Thyroid, that has improved, my hair is long & thick to begin with but I would be so upset if I lost it, again a HUGE thumbs up for it.

I had blood tests in September (I finally have medical care available because our state expanded Medicaid in compliance with Obamacare). My doctor said I needed to take 30 MG natural Thyroid. So, I have been taking Armour every day. I take it when I awaken in the middle of the night or when I first awaken in the AM. The results are all positive: I lost at least 20 pounds; some of the fat I had converted to muscle and I now wear smaller clothes; I feel more energetic; my appetite is good but I do not have an urge to overeat; I am able to get by on less sleep; and my heart is not beating out so I can feel it any more (That last was very worrisome!).

Approx how long did it take for you to start feeling the “good effects” from the 30 mg of Armour natural thyroid Rx? And had you been on a synthetic thyroid Rx prior to that?

I have been on Armour thyroid for over 15 yrs., and had half my thyroid removed. In this time I have changed doctor’s a few times. When Armour changed their formula, I knew before my pharmacist because I took my Armour sublingualy (under my tongue). He swore that they had not changed it! That’s pretty scary.
I have been on the same dose for years, but suddenly my labs came back hyperthyroidism! I wouldn’t trust a doctor who just looked at the labs alone. They should gather all the facts, such as how the patient feels. Going on a diet of 1,000 calories puts your body into starvation mode, and you actually will gain weight. At least a st that’s what I have always been taught in health and wellness classes.

I used to weigh 123 lbs., but I am 56 yrs. Old now and weigh 143, and am 5’4. To me that’s normal ageing.
I have recently been diagnosed with low vitamin D. I started going in the sun for a few minutes a day, and feel much better. Sometimes I feel as though I want to blame everything on my thyroid, when something else is actually going on.

I told my general practitioner that I wanted to see an endocrinologist, because of he labs showing hyperthyroidism. My hair is falling out a little more than it should, and skin is dry. She lowered my armour from 60 mg to 30 because of hyper. The endocrinologist was a turd and was in bed with the drug companies. He said first off I hate Armour. He didn’t give me an explanation for my symptoms, just constantly talked about how Armour causes heart disease. I walked out of that office feeling like I wasted a co-pay. I also realized last year when I was gaining weight that my Lyrics meds were to blame. Stopped taking it and dropped 20 lbs. I got up to 163 lbs!
I should just stick with my g.p. doctor as she seems to be the one who actually listens.

I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease in 2009 . I immediately saw an endroconologist who suggested having my thyroid destroyed with radioactive iodine treatment. I decided to work with a naturopath to try to reverse my Graves’ disease and get my thyroid working again. After a year with the naturopath with no results I decided to do the RAI treatment. I was then put on Synthroid. I hated it, I had itchy skin and felt depressed. I then changed doctors and began seeing a health and wellness doctor. I was now post menopausal and began bio identical hormone creams after lab results showed my estrogen, testosterone and progesterone were not present in my body. This also causes muscle loss, muscle fatigue ,low sex drive and many symptoms common to low thyroid. I was also put on armour thyroid with this doctor and found the results to be much better then Synthroid, although I am still adjusting the dosage I have, the armour made at a compound pharmacy with a vitamin c filler as the regular armour didn’t agree with me. I still find I get puffy eyes after I take the medication (does anyone else experience this ?) I do get burning in my chest and some nights wake up with anxiety and panic attacks. Not sure if I am reacting to the pig hormone as I have recently become vegan but I don’t know an alternative medication. I may have to adjust my dose. I am currently taking 2 ( 30mg slow release and 1 15 g regular release ). I also recently added the ThyroSense from the health food store which really made me feel great (I put it in water and just drink it slowly in the morning) this is new so I’m not sure what it will do long term. I may need to decrease my armour amount since adding this. I’ll keep you posted. I am determined to find something that may work to help me feel normal again

Deciding to take Amour I thought was going to be the best decision in the world because there are so many people who have seen a difference. So, I took Amour for 1 month and started to feel great. Then the hives started to appear all over my body. The hives stayed for 3 weeks, then my skin started to peel off of my body. At that point I spent almost a week in the hospital with Steven Johnson Syndrome (a severe allergic reaction to medicine). I then continued with doctors weekly for about 6 months. Being blessed and having great doctors is the reason I am here today, as it only affected my skin and did not cause damage to my other organs of my body. A little education, Steven Johnson Syndrome can happen with almost any type of medicine, just be aware. August is Steven Johnson Syndrome Awareness month.

We are begining to think I am having an allergic reaction to Armour so you may want to find out. Starts as weight gain and then gets worse with chest pain and breathing issues.

Hello, I’d love to hear what you are finding. I switched to Armour in April & feel ok except for weight gain & just this feeling of weight hanging on to me no matter what I do. Even after 200 laps in the pool, not even 1 lb weight loss with good eating. I can’t figure it out & I’m ready to go back to synthetics. Thanks!

I sure hope you are working with a doctor on your Armour management, because if you are not, then you can destroy your thyroid. I don’t know of any doctor who would prescribe it for just weight loss. Not everyone loses weight on it.

I eat less than 1000 calories and day and workout every other day to where I am dripping sweat!
I wish that I never had radioactive iodine to destroy my thyroid.
I just want my life back!
I use to weight 104 pounds and now I weigh 116 pounds!
    Please help me!

I feel the same way!!! Been on Armour for 3 months now and have gained over 10 lbs!!! This time last year I weighed only 112!!! Now, I’m 124!!! I’m only 5’2″ so 10+ lbs is a ton on me!!! I am def feeling better on the 60 mg twice a day, but weight gain is not okay!!! If I can’t shed this weight, I will be going back to synthetic and adding synthetic T3 to my synthroid. If that doesn’t work then back to plain old synthroid. I would rather be tired than fat. Being tired etc… is one thing, but being fat is depressing and unacceptable when you are eating healthy & Exercising!!!

I just saw my doctor a couple weeks ago & she said she would like to put me on 60MG but I said no because I was worried my hair would fall out. If you get too much or too little it could fall out.

I am currently taking 45 mg. of Armour 1x per day (down from 60 mg 1 x per day a month ago). Since 2013, I have experienced hair loss that doesn’t seem to stop. (I’ve been on Armour for many years, since the ’90’s). I have now started wearing wigs, which I hate because they itch. I’ve become tired and some days, depressed, which I never was. I’ve started gaining weight because of the difference in dosage, which has slowed my metabolism. I was 116 lbs. and am now 121 lbs. I feel every lb. too. I hate that feeling since my clothes no longer fit right. I believe the drug company changed the formula considering I’ve taken Armour for years and had no hair loss until 2013.

I switched to Armour thyroid 12 days ago and my anxiety increased dramatically, my heart races and pounds. I feel hot and cold and break out in sweats. I don’t think pig thyroid is any more natural to a human than synthetic thyroid. I’ve switched back today to levothyroxine and already feel calmer, warmer and all around better. I’m 56 years old and menopausal so maybe age does make a difference. I did always feel good on levothyroxine so should’ve never switched. :)

About 3 weeks after starting Armour (15 mg) I got a rash that looks like a sunburn. It started at my neck and went down over my chest and covered my stomach. After a few days the skin got really dry and started to flake off. My thyroid started to swell. My naturopath had me stop taking the pills and is ordering some lab work to see if I have an autoimmune disease associated with my thyroid.

I had very low wake up temp each morning and got a doctor to give me 30mg Armour and after a month in increased to 60 mg hoping to help my immune system, Candida and tiredness. About three weeks into it I started having very itchy almost warm feeling left forearm. I am also being treated for Lyme Disease and at first thought it was that. I then checked Armour itching on the web and learned Armour new formula is not like the old one and lots of people are having trouble with the itching. JG, I have never heard of anyone who gained weight on Armour Thyroid. I might suggest you ask your doctor to give you a blood test to determine where you are deficient. I don’t know how old you are or what other drugs you are taking so this is a general list: vitamins D, B6, B12, COq10, magnesium and iron levels. Then I would take your test results to a licensed naturopath to get a second opinion. Not all states have licenses for naturopaths but here in California it is required.
Most doctors are not trained in nutrition so most won’t be helpful. I was fortunate a decade ago to find an integrative physician who has a phd in nutrition as well. There are a few medical schools around the country that offer degrees in alternative medicine and I am lucky my doctor takes insurance since most of these doctors do not. The second best thing is a naturopath or an osteopath. There are many areas of western medicine where alternative medicine trumps allopathic medicine. IF you want to get better, start doing the research.

I never experienced burning on my tongue while using Armour but, after many years of using it, even after the “bad batch” several years ago, I have moved on to another thyroid product as the Armour was actually giving me muscle aches. Muscle aches can be a symptom of low thyroid. WITHOUT THE ARMOUR I DO NOT HAVE THE MUSCLE ACHES. Unfortunately, after being such a great solution for low thyroid for so many years, something the drug manufacturers have done has created a problematic Rx.
As for the burning tongue, you might want to rule out acid reflux or thrush (Candida on the tongue). Thrush will leave a white coating on your tongue, especially first thing in the morning.

I started on Armour for the first of any thyroid med ever, probably needed it most of adult life. First 2 weeks, 30 mg, tried to cut in half, was a mess, then as directed took a whole, and within a week went back to half. I was flying around on 60 mg. Never had heart palpitations I read about here, though felt it was too much for me. Found a pharmacy that made them in 30 mg, been on Armour about 3 months. I feel more like myself. I am not sure if it is the cause of becoming allergic to the 2 skin cremes I have used for 2 years with no problem. I break out in redness and roughness, on face and neck if I use them, and then it takes 4 days to resolve. (have re- tested using the cremes a couple of times after not using a while, it happens again.)
Recently have had some small break out on jawline, likely from a Bio Identical estrogen applied on face… a compounded pharmacy creme, with progesterone separately at night (not on face)…. after a month of that noticed some breakout, not really visible but I feel it.. I only take 1/4 of what I was supposed to, just on side of caution. I don’t know that I can blame it on Armour but wondered if the Thyroid med changed my system to become more sensitive to the face cremes.
I read an article from the company that there is no “new” Armour, that they did not change the active ingredients. I also get an itchy spot on my wrist and hand that is annoying…and can’t see what it is causing it. Hair loss about the same, I shed like a dog. Sleeping long enough is still a challenge… when I do I have a new life that day.

I am a 55 year old male. In June 2012, I had a thyroidectomy and was put on synthroid (150 mcg). I struggled with the lack of energy as my endocrinologist regularly increased the dosage (went up to 300 mcg). I never felt well and continued to always feel tired. I happened to go to a different endocrinologist who suggested trying Armour Thyroid since she felt that my thyroid levels were not moving in the right direction. Amazingly, I began to feel better in just a few days. I’ve been on Armour for months now and I feel completely back to normal. I know that Armour isn’t for everyone but if the synthroid isn’t working it’s worth a try. I know synthroid has only T4 in it which I understand most people can process and generate T3. However, natural Armour Thyroid comes with T4 and T3 (plus T2 and T1) for those who might have trouble processing just the T4.

After being on armour thyroid for approximately 9 months, I am experiencing pain in my jaw and muscles, weakness, shortness of breathe, severe fatigue, weight gain, lack of energy, daily headaches, foggy headedness, depression and crying frequently. I ran out of meds 5 days ago and I don’t think that I will continue taking the meds.

I just wanted to encourage folks not to give up. I’m very lucky that I found a med and dose that works for me (armour thyroid) and that I found a doctor who was willing to let me try a different treatment. Levothyroxine did not work for me and in fact made me feel worse. The hardest part was being patient while waiting to see if a new drug or dose was going to work since it takes so long for any changes to be evident.
My heart goes out to folks who still haven’t found a medication or dose that works for them. If you want to try armour thyroid and your doctor won’t prescribe it you can try Mary Shomon’s website. On it is a list of doctors (that are rated by patients) that are willing to prescribe armour thyroid. And I heard about armour thyroid on the PP show that featured Mary Shomon over a year ago. Sometimes the show really bugs me but I have to give thanks for the information on armour thyroid. I never would have known about it if I hadn’t heard the show.

I have been feeling lousy for 2 and a half years and my blood tests showed my TSh levels going up and down between 4.5 and 6.8. At my last blood draw, my TSH went up to 5.88. My primary doctor put me on Armour Thyroid 10 days ago and I am hoping for the best. I am on 30 mg a day right now. I feel slightly more energetic today.
My symptoms for the past 2 and a half years were severe dizziness, off balance, perimenopause to menopause, really weird hot flashes where I don’t sweat but instead feel like passing out, numbness in arms and legs, weak feeling jelly legs, slightly depressed, weight gain of approximately 12 to 15 lbs from 117 lbs to 132 lbs. Cellulite developing on my upper arms and getting a fat stomach. My family is totally annoyed with me because my brain fog and lack of energy prevents me from getting my housework done, etc. etc.
I have had a full cardiac workup and an MRI on my brain to check for M.S. lesions which was negative.
I thought I was dying for the past 2 1/2 years. I am praying that the Armour works for me….. I break the pills in half and allow them to crumble. I take one half in the middle of the night when I wake up to use the bathroom (with water) and the other half upon waking up (with water). I do not eat for an hour afterwards…..
It tastes really nasty, but I don’t care, I wash it down with water. I am desperate to feel better again. I also take bioidentical progesterone cream which I rub on my arms for my “hot flashes” which have lessened some but haven’t completely gone away. I read that hypothyroid can also cause hot flashes. My hot flashes feel like I am having a stroke. The first one I had I thought I was having a cardiac arrest……it was AWFUL. That was on July 5, 2010. Prior to that I was experiencing erratic periods getting closer together due to perimenopause (that didn’t bother me, all the other horrible symptoms of dizziness and off balance and body numbness is what made me think I was about to die). I went to get checked out but wasn’t put on Thyroid medication till recently.
My blood pressure is normal, my glucose levels are 84 when fasting all my bloodwork is normal except for the fluctuating TSH levels. I pray this stuff (Armour) works for me. I have a horrible quality of life.

I had a thyroidectomy in May 2009. I was given Synthroid the generic version (begins with “L”). A few days after my surgery I was rushed to the emergency room to find out my calcium, magnesium, and iron was extremely low. I stayed in the hospital for 2 weeks. During my stay at the hospital they increased my dose. About 6 months after that my regular doctor increased my meds again. In 2011 we move to another state for work and I found a new doctor. I decided to try to voice my complaints with my new doctor. I explained to them that I experienced: palpitations, couldn’t breathe, very tired, brain fog, depression, aches and pains, anxiety….
I found out that I was allergic to the generic version and was placed on the actual Synthroid. I felt a little better. The doctors said my labs were good, but I still had all the same symptoms. November 2012 I was sick of this mess! So I found a new doctor. I explain to him the same things and he said he was going to increase my Synthroid. I told him no, but rather he was going to let me try Armour. He said OK, but we need to keep track of things. So far so good. I can remember things, no depression, no anxiety….. I am even loosing weight (14lbs lost so far) along with watching what I eat. I absolutely love Armour.
I did a lot of research and since I have decided to chew the pill and take 1/2 of my pill in the morning and the other 1/2 before bed time I am able to wake up like a normal person and by 6pm I am not sleepy. I take it 30 minutes before I eat breakfast or drink coffee and 30 minutes after dinner.

I have been on Armour thyroid since 2006. I am beginning to wonder if it is still the right one for me. I am having trouble losing weight no matter how hard I try. I have noticed that you take it on an empty stomach, but did not know you don’t need to drink anything after you take it. I need some advice do I try and find another natural thyroid med? I have read a lot of these comments and believe me I understand. I have dealt with heart palpitations for a long time, and anxiety attacks. I have been in the ER more then once with anxiety attacks.

After being on Amour Thyroid since I was 25 years (I am now 64) in 1996 on a routine visit to a doctor, I was told that I had to go on synthroid because they were going to stop making Amour. I have never been tested and basically feeling generally bad (all the symptoms I read above) as I did over those 27 years. I just went back to the doctor, because I was having another bout of total fatigue and memory loss to have my thyroid checked and she came up with lowering my synthroid even more as an answer.
She had just raised the synthroid 3 months before, I demanded that I be given Amour and to her dismay, she agreed. In just 2 weeks, after the synthroid had left my body, even on the lowest dose of Amour I felt alive again and happy. All the symptoms are are healing up, including the dry skin with sores so bad I was seeing dermatologist, who was prescribing creams and nothing was working. Gone in 5 weeks. I am sure the scarring from scratching will fade also. So a lot of money, time and pain and now I am free again with Amour.

My endocrinologist prescribed armour thyroid and I was taking it and developed a cough shortly after, I was switched to Nature thyroid same dose and shortly after my blood pressure went up, so I switched back to armour and here I have the cough again with clear phlegm, I wonder if my body is detecting the pig glands in the armour and making phlegm to fight it off hence the cough.
If anyone has similar experience I would like to know. In addition, since I have been on these two thyroid medications, I get really bad muscle pain and extreme weakness in my arms and legs, I have not been able to lose any weight either. Not sure where to turn next. I’m due for a blood work soon.

I have been taking Armour Thyroid since 1973. I had a goiter and had most of my thyroid removed. I have never had any medical problems. My dosage is 120mg 2 gr. About 9 years ago suddenly Armour was not available so I had to use some synthetic brand. I’m not sure what the name was but I didn’t feel right even after getting the dose adjusted.
Several months later I checked with my pharmacy and it was available again. I went back on Armour and have been on it ever since. I don’t know what the problem is that some Doctors insist that you take a synthetic version. It’s your body!!! I know 4 people who are on some brand of synthetic thyroid and are constantly having blood tests to check there levels or in some way or another at the Doctor getting there thyroid med “tweaked.”
I visit my doctor on a regular basis for checkups and he never sends me to have blood work to see if my thyroid levels are okay. I think a lot of doctors like the “perks” from prescribing synthetic thyroid .

Hello everyone. When I last posted I reported how on Armour I had initially done very well but then had a year of hair becoming thinner and thinner. I also started to have a racy feeling in my chest. My labs didn’t make my naturopathic physician think I was overtreated, but because of my symptoms and my request we switched me to a compounded T3, T4 with dosage adjusted slightly. I’ve been on it for about five months now and beginning last month I noticed my hair not falling out so easily and beginning to thicken up, and this week I have lots of new hair growth with short little flyaways that I am celebrating. I gained some weight though and energy level has dipped a little. I’ll do new labs next month and go back to see her, so I’ll post again. I’m glad I can get the compounded locally. I pay $30/mo.

Hypothyroid runs in my family, so I wasn’t too surprised when I came down with severe depression 6 months AFTER having my second baby (8 years ago). Luckily the PA I saw had a head on her shoulders, she checked my TSH right away (because I had never in my life had depression). I was put on 10 mcg of synthroid and until 2 weeks ago I had steadily climbed up to 200mcg.
My doctor discovered that I had hashimotos and asked if I wanted to change my medication to Armour or just up my synthroid (again).
As the wife of a now retired sailor you can imagine how many doctors I’ve seen, and how many laughed when I asked to be put on Armour. I have NEVER felt normal on synthroid, EVER! I don’t know anything about the old formula, but the Armour the doctor put me on has changed my life (so far).
She dropped me down to 100mcg of synthroid and added 90 mg of armour thyroid. I take my synthroid at night, and I take half an armour under my tongue in the morning and the other half before lunch. My energy levels are way up, my mood has improved, I can jump out of bed in the morning without feeling like I am going to die, and my bedroom life has improved (I’m only 28, it should be good right?), my hair has stopped falling out, my skin has improved, and I am only 2 weeks into this new medication.
A year ago my natropath put my on cytomel in addition to my synthroid, and the experience was TERRIBLE! I seriously thought I was going to die, or I had Parkinson’s disease. I was shaky, and exhausted for almost 2 weeks, and they doctor told me to suck it up. It just wasn’t for me.

Hi, It wasn`t until I argued with my Dr. to look at me, I mean really look at me, did I finally get diagnosed because in about 3 months, I had gained 45 pounds, had numerous problems, dry skin & hair, constipation, tiredness, emotional roller coaster, etc, you name it. Normally everyone just concludes that you are over weight because you eat wrong & don’t exercise, which is further from the truth.
Well any way I was started last year march 2012 on Syn-thyroid, prescription was filled generically, because of the way the script was written, anyhow, for about a month everything seemed better, than, not and I started noticing that all my symptoms were coming back along with me swelling up and having problems voiding. When I notified my Dr. she suggested putting me on (lasix) which is a Diuretic, to address my water retention issue, another added pill is not what I wanted. I said no I want to see a specialist an endocrinologist and so an appointment was scheduled.
Needless to say I ended up waiting quite a long time and in the mean time my symptoms continued and got worse, along with, muscle cramps, itchy itchy eyes, dry eyes, itchy skin, periodic chest and rib pain and cramps, like charlie horse`s. Finally after seeing the Endo-Dr, and requesting, This Dr, put me on “Armour Thyroid” and all my swelling went anyway, no more itchy and a little weight loss and I am finally getting my energy levels back up some what. We are still trying to get my dose exactly right.
I had a problem with the sodium component of the syn-thyroid, levoxxyl/ levoxin and “Armour” addresses and gives you all the other needed and added things like T1, T2, calcium, and a natural Diuretic. Thank goodness for “Natural Thyroid”

After years of many symptoms and no diagnosis, I finally found a doc who listened and put me on thyroid meds beginning April 2012. First we tried Levoxyl(?). I felt somewhat better, but after researching discovered Amour Thyroid. She switched me over to it, and I felt better within a short time, and progressively feeling my energy back, normal sleep, digestion, etc.
My hair is no longer falling out in gobs, but will it grow back? Will my skin become less snake-like? Do the symptoms caused by low-thyroid reverse after time on medications?

I have taken Armour Thyroid for fifty five years and have had absolutely no problem with this medication. Now my doctor is saying it is not a good medication anymore but can’t be specific except to say my insurance company will no longer pay for it. I said I would pay for it myself. He said he could get into trouble for just prescribing it. Can anyone tell me what’s going on here?

I’ve been doing well on Armour for 20 years. Until 6 months ago the mail order pharmacy thru my husbands employment sent me 240 mg tablets. I was taking 2 grains a day. I’m 59. These are big pills now. I called the 800 number to talk to a pharmacy rep and ask about the conversion from gr to mg. she got frustrated I could tell. I should have googled it but that idea never popped into my head until the other day when I got my blood work back.
I’ve been very ill for 6 months. Lost so much weight and I didn’t need to lose weight in the first place. Anxiety…OCD like I never experienced before… crying spells getting longer all the time. despair. Legs and arms ached so badly. Hair falling out. I thought I was entering the dementia zone and scared? Agoraphobic and a blossoming hypochondriac… or so it seemed.
I googled the conversion after finding my T3 was 3.2… THS

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism just over a month ago and put on levothyroxine. Due to my severe gluten sensitivity, I became very ill. Of course, I had other side effects with it. The Doctor tried to put me on Synthroid and Levoxyl until I found out that the pharmaceutical companies cannot guarantee that the inactive/raw ingredients are gluten free. Today I started Armour thyroid at 30 mg. I do have stomach upset and so hoping it is gluten free.
When I called Forest who manufactures Armour and spoke directly with a pharmacist, he stated that it is gluten free. They take a survey of all suppliers once per year (which is more than some companies. People were mentioning the formula change. I asked about this and the only change that has occurred is that they decreased the sugar content and increased the cellulose content. The pharmacist stated, otherwise, the formula is the very same.

TSH levels – Many doctor think the normal range for TSH goes up to 5.5. The new range for normal is 3 or even 2.5. If your doctor does not agree with this, make sure you have your freeT4 and freeT3 levels checked to be sure you really are in the normal range for thyroid function.
My understanding is that as we get older we do not convert T4 to T3 as easily as we used to and may need to add T3.

I’m 44 and diagnosed 16 months ago by a naturopath physician w/ sub-clinical hypothyroid. I started off with Armour working wonderfully for me, but in the past 8 months have lost so much hair that a ponytail diameter is half what it used to be. I also had been steadily losing 2-5 pounds a month and had some of my old energy back, but that stopped. At first I didn’t make the connection.
I am changing tomorrow to a T3, T4 compounded by the pharmacy with my doctor’s support. Fortunately have a compounding pharmacy near home, though it is taking them a week to fill the script. Really hoping that I regain the benefits and my hair stops falling out.

I’ve been reading the latest post about the new reformulated armour thyroid. I have talked to pharmacies & read the info that comes with the reformulated armour. It says take on empty stomach and for 4 hours do not eat or drink anything with calcium and iron in it or the med will not absorb into the body. That is the change I know of. Hopes this helps anyone who is taking armour thyroid, I am on it & had dosage reduced to 60mgs, I have had a burned out thyroid since 1990.

I was on all the different synthetic thyroid pills and they raised my blood pressure…. never had a problem until then. Then they wanted to put me on blood pressure meds. I was feeling awful. Got all the info I could and found a Doc who would prescribe Armour. Felt great, blood pressure went back to normal. Then the Armour games began. They reformulated and I was getting heart palpitations. Researching again I found Armour WAS the culprit. Then the shortages came.
Finally ordered Canada’s Erfa Thyroid and have had no problems since.

Finally I see a post on weight Gain. Did the updated Armour affect your weight to gain more? I was initially put on it 5 years ago for peri menopausal and to help with weight. Initially it was great. Then I noticed 2.5 years ago I was gaining weight steadily. Now I’m 20 pounds over and I’ve stagnated but nothing I can do is helping me lose weight. Not one pound which is weird. I keep thinking maybe it’s the Armour Thyroid. My TSH levels are fine and they have always been ok so I’m thinking of weaning off and see how I feel. I think now the meds are doing the opposite affect on me and I didn’t know they reformulated this medicine.

Hi, I appreciate the info on this great site, thanks. I have a question I hope you can help me with. I’m from the USA and I’m currently doing well on Armour thyroid. I’ve been on it about 3 months and I’m starting to get more energy and even feel that I’m losing weight which is great as I’m overweight and have always struggled with it. My concern is I’ve come to South America to work and they don’t have Armour here at least not in Ecuador where I’m staying.
Now can you recommend a way that I can order the Armour while I’m here?Do you know of a reliable company with quality Armour or an equivalent med that would ship to me in Ecuador? Otherwise I’d have to switch to levothyroxine which is what they have here but I’d hate to switch while this is working well! Thanks so much

I’m 33 and had the same side effects from Synthroid, I started having mild effects at 50mg but I thought I was just a little out of shape. I learned it takes weeks for the new doses to build up and cause side effects so as my dosage increased to 100 by the end of last summer I could barely breath, my Oxygen levels were low, horrible chest pains and the cramps and pain my legs was unbearable. The Dr’s did every test you can think of and insisted it wasn’t the Synthroid. After stopping the meds on my own, it took about 10 days and the symptoms started easing taking a total of 6 weeks to go away. They had me try the med again on a small dose and the pain and issues reappeared in about 10 days.
I just started taking Armour thyroid in a small dose today… What dosage did you first notice the breathing and muscle pain?

Then my doctor put me back on Armour… but I have a problem with jaw paid which the endo doctor said may be connected to Armour. I am 74. The jaw pain started about 20 years ago and has become significantly worse the last ten years. So much so that going up one flight of stairs causes pain.

I was recently switched to Armour Thyroid about 4 months ago and I feel AMAZING for the first time in years! I’ve lost over 20 lbs in that time and finally feel like me again! LOVE Armour Thyroid… do NOT EVER want to have to go back. Does it lose it’s potency after a while? Do you have to increase your dosage as the years pass?

Most HMO’s give you the synthetic versions. Armour is very inexpensive.. ask your doctor to prescribe it or you’ll go over h is head. Even offer to pay for it. It is so cheap. A 90 day supply at my Costco is around 17.00 and if you ask the Dr to double the dose and then you can split them in half with a splitter and they will last 6 mos. If you find a doctor of Integrative Medicine who is an MD, you will get better care. Naturopaths are also excellent but are not usually covered but it is worth asking your plan administrator.

Just got my armour for the first time, of course my doctor didn’t have time or the knowledge to explain everything to me in detail so I’m hoping to get info online, mainly I’m concerned about the chewing scenario?? Should I really chew the pills now as some people here mentioned? Also it does have to be a completely empty stomach, no other vitamins and not even coffee at the time I take it is that correct? Also my labs show my free t3 and t4 to be normal range but the tsh is consistently high, at 7 or 8 so can I still benefit from armour? thanks a lot!

I was started on the Armour Thyroid about 4 months ago starting at the 30 dose, then to 60, then to 90, and now to 120! The pain is excruciating, I’m having breathing difficulties, and hand tremors, etc. I am 71, and I’m asking my Dr. to go back to Synthroid as it has much less side affects (No pain, and no breathing or hand side affects)! My age may be a detriment to the Armour, and it may work for many, but it sure is not working for me!

I was told to “watch” my thyroid levels since I was 17… I did but had no clue what I was watching for. A naturopathic doctor put me on Armour Thyroid and it helped with sleeping, dry skin, brittle nails and a number of other things. When it wasn’t available my regular doctor prescribed Levothyroxin. That was not good… made me feel foggy, nightmares, just not feeling well. I quit that and asked my doctor to put me back on Armour when it was available again. I didn’t realize it was a new formula… I should have because I have been back on it for about 3 weeks now and I feel like crap. My joints hurt, especially my ankles. I am tired and I gained 10 pounds in just a little over two weeks. I would beg for the old formula back. I might try the Canada source if I can get a new RX here soon. Why do they have to mess with something that works?

I just started taking Armour Thyroid two weeks ago and am surprised at how much better I am feeling. I read all sorts of stuff on the Internet and had additional discussions with my doctor whom I admire and respect immensely. He told me that when Forrest Labs changed the formula the new coating is harder for the body to absorb so you’re not getting the right dosage and to chew the pills and drink some water to wash them down. That made perfect sense to me as why so many people were having problems with the new version of the medication and having symptoms of under-active thyroid.
To give you some back ground I too have had a long history (about 25 years) with hypothyrodism and have been on a wide range of synthroid, switched to the generic version (doesn’t work although the doctor said my numbers were right where they needed to be) and then combination synthroid and cytomel over the past 10 years and thought I was falling apart as peri-menopause reared it’s ugly head and my old doctor told me I needed to lose weight and then I’d feel better. She too mentioned an anti-depressant & I told her THAT wasn’t my problem as I wasn’t depressed and didn’t want that medication.
So after switching doctors almost two years ago I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and it feels great! My advice to anyone on Armour is to talk to your doctor about chewing it so your body can better absorb the medication. And, if you’re not happy with your doctor look around for a new one as I wished I’d made the switch 10 years ago. Do your homework… look on the Internet, ask friends or co-workers or even call a hospital and ask for a recommendation of a doctor. They are out there but are hard to find so don’t give up.
Also, know that there are concierge doctor practices where you pay an annual fee for enhanced medical care and appointments can be 60-90 minutes depending upon your needs! My doctor is one of these and spends time with me and treats the patient (mind, body and soul) to find the underlying problem and does not treat the symptoms with more medications as so may other doctors do as they don’t have time for patients who are not the norm.
My only hope is that this information will help someone and ease their misery quicker than most of ours has been.

What can I do I desperately need professional assistance? I took my mom to Internal doctor for her low thyroid. Well she went from one extreme to the other. From low thyroid to hyperthyroid til now she is just skin and bones. She was already small. 5’7 weighing 130. She is now skin and bone.
She took some kind of natural T3 & T4 treatment. She dropped significant weight then. When I took her back for her check up. Look like the doctor ignored the blood test he received and increase her dosage from 100 to 125. Thyroid 50/50 100 MCG was the original dosage he gave her. Then he increase that dosage after I told him of her significant weigh loss over a three month period. He moved it up to 50/50 to a higher dosage 125 MCG.
I really was shocked because in a couple month time she went to skin and bones my mother is 78 years old with dementia, HBP, and diabetes. Now she cannot even walk. I am afraid I made a bad decision take her to that doctor. She once was on levothyroxine. She didn’t take that for a year or more.
Before she start taking the so called natural thyroid treatment. When we were review the report it was showing extreme measure from very low to very high. He told me not to pay that no attention. Just for the redord my mom was pregnant with me over 51 years ago they surgically removed her thyroid. Is that a danger? I am afraid for her being so fragile and small. Please help what can I do. I don’t plan to take her back to that doctor again no more.

Sounds like your T4 (which is what Levothroxin gives you) is not converting to T3. Have your doctor check your T3 levels and, better yet, check your TSH level, too. If the T3 levels are low, your Levothroxin is not converting and you will still have symptoms. In this case, Armour may be helpful IF they have worked out it’s issues.
The rash could be unrelated… check your pH levels for being too acidic or even parasites…. especially if you’ve been out of the country recently or if you have pets. The swollen tongue sounds like a MAJOR low thyroid symptom.

A few years ago, my doctor suggested I take thyroid meds, but not wanting to take more RX’s, I tried kelp, iodine, exercise and denial, before I tried Levothrozine (not sure of spelling), then Synthroid. While taking each of these, I’ve still had hair loss, aching body, brain fog, memory problems, etc.
Since I am hypothyroid, I assumed I would have weight loss once I started taking the meds; this has not been the case, although in the past, I’ve had no problem with weight control.
Results of my recent blood tests show I am on the correct dosage, but I still don’t feel well. I’ve heard and read that using Armour Thyroid is best, but now I have doubts, after reading some of the above comments.
Would someone with positive results please give me a follow-up.

I’m so glad my Walgreens has been able to have this in stock for me when I started it last month and for a recent refill. I did have to wait a day. I’m excited to see what life will be like in a year, because into my second month I’ve definitely seen myself have more energy and lifting of brain fog.
I am blessed to be working w/ a naturopathic physician who believes in getting people in the ideal range on blood tests, not just the big, wide range the lab companies come back with. My regular doctor has always said the tests say Within Normal Limits, but my ND said I have all the symptoms of hypothyroid, a strong family history for thyroid disease, and my labs were “sub-clinical” so started me on the Armour Thyroid. Bless her.

If not, we are both trying to find out what the “old” Armour was comprised of to see if we can have the compound pharmacy follow the same recipe… If anyone knows the ingredients and measures of the medicine that was produced back in 2008. Please share.

I told my doctor I could no longer get Armour Thyroid and I didn’t want it anyway. It also caused a pounding heart and after wearing a heart monitor it was found to be skipping a beat. Tests showed nothing wrong with my heart. After learning of the reformulation, I found many others having the same symptoms.
My doctor suggested trying Canada, which I did and my order came in a week. I’ve been on it 2 days now and hope it works as good as the old Armour. She has been taking the new reformulated Armour and went back to severe pain, side effects and allergies. She spoke with her doctor (PCP – because we are having a difficult time locating a Endo that will listen to her and help), and her PCP agreed that going to a Compounding Pharmacy is a good way to go.
Beacon Pharmacy is in Southington, Connecticut. This pharmacy will make the meds from scratch. The components they will use will be the same as the Armour that she was taking earlier this year. It may be more expensive. Not sure. I will keep this site posted.

I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroid earlier this year. My TSH 3rd Generation levels were at: 7.26. I am not comfortable taking any medications as I have had so many negative reactions or such awful side effects from most of them that I just plain refuse to take anything other than my one Blood Pressure Medicine of (Cardizem CD/generic Diltiazem CD) for which I take for severe hereditary migraines. My doctor wanted to put me on Armour 30 mg.
This has been the first time I have had any kind or type of Thyroid irregularities in blood work ups. I am 55 years of age and am looking for more alternative ways, noninvasive treatments. I am currently taking a liquid form of Kelp after this diagnosis. The good news is that I have been able for the first time in 20 years to be able to take off 46 pounds through diet and keep it off and am continuing to decrease my weight. I am still 100 pounds over weight and hoping to keep this weight loss going and off.
If I have to take thyroid medications will I gain this already lost weight back? I do not want that to happen as I am feeling so much better than I have in years with this weight loss! Any suggestions?
PEOPLE’S PHARMACY RESPONSE: PLEASE WORK WITH YOUR DOCTOR. TAKING KELP IS NOT APPROPRIATE IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES.
WHEN THE THYROID HORMONE LEVELS ARE CORRECTED, IT IS MUCH EASIER TO CONTROL WEIGHT, AND PEOPLE FEEL BETTER, TOO.

I went through a very long discovery period with my Doctor telling me my issues were in my head putting me on very strong anti-depressants. My fight was I have never been a depressed person and I am chemically imbalanced, I know my body! Long long story… next when she finally concurred with me after one of many blood work-ups she called me and apologized to me and put me on Synthroid.
I was not well!!! My body fought this as well. I am a happy person and this is making me sick and put on weight and worse insomnia. She added more drugs to counteract the Synthyoid mess. She sent me to every other doctor she could think up including a shrink. I found Armour Thyroid on the internet. I had to go to an endocrinologist to determine yes in fact I had an inflamed thyroid and he gave me Armour Thyroid while he told me it wouldn’t work and I should be on Synthroid and obviously I need anti-depressants and possible I attract negative in my life, I should pray.
With Armour Thyroid I became whole!!! I started to sleep after 5 plus years of severe insomnia, I lost weight, I found my energy, I found my family again!!! Now Armour Thyroid is disappearing. I will never go back to the horrible drugs I was on. I’ll find a natural way.

I have taken Armour Thyroid for 53 years and have had very good results. I know my body and could adjust the dosage a bit one way or the other if needed. I had a thyroidectomy as a child due to a toxic goiter. I hate that I no longer can take this medication. I now am on Levothroid and I feel weird. I am looking for a source of natural thyroid and would appreciate it if anyone out there could tell me where I can find some. My doctor will write me a prescription if I can find this med. Please help.
PEOPLE’S PHARMACY RESPONSE: CHECK WITH ERFA CANADA. IT MAKES A DESICCATED THYROID PRODUCT THAT REQUIRES PRESCRIPTION.

Apparently a problem has developed with Armour Thyroid and the company is not shipping. I learned that a few months ago they changed the components of this drug and people started to feel awful. I happened to be one of them. For months I felt that my heart was coming out of my chest, and I was missing beats. I also developed pain all over my body and even memory problems. I went to my endo and the thyroid levels were fine. I went to the cardiologist and they did a Stress test with Contrast and took pictures of my heart. Everything fine. Since I have a pacemaker, I decide to check with the doctor that placed it in me.
They were saying that I have premature heart beats but that maybe is produced by my high blood pressure. I never suspected the Armour. So yesterday I decided to do some research since they put me back on Synthroid and I found that I have been sleeping a lot and did not want to do anything. I found out about the changing of Armour by Forest Lab ( and I assumed that by the problems that the change developed they decided not to provide the pharmacies.) I believe that even the FDA has been involved.
I am kind of desperate, since the doctors keep giving me all kinds of medications to cover up the symptoms that I believe the Armour has produce on me.
    Anyone with any other comment?

I asked my doctor to move me to Armour Thyroid about 2 years ago. After about 3 months, I noticed an increase in my energy level, I lost about 10 pounds, and my depression was greatly lessened.
