Q. I had been bothered with reflux for several years, but I got good results from broccoli. During the first two weeks I ate 1/2 cup a day (sometimes raw, sometimes cooked). I was able to stop taking Prilosec.

Now I make sure to eat broccoli at least twice a week. I haven’t had any problems in more than a year.

A. We have heard from another reader that broccoli banished his heartburn. It is certainly a healthful addition to the diet. There is even some research demonstrating that compounds in broccoli sprouts can kill Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium responsible for stomach ulcers (Digestive Diseases and Sciences, Aug., 2004).

I have found out that eating an apple of your choice after meals, (Organic) of course stops Acid refluux attack, I had no idea I was suffering attack for years. My quality of life was seriously disrupted, I began avoiding lots of foods that I use to love, at times I could not drink a simple glass of water, or exert my self in any way, where I live there are lots of hills, the burning searing pain, was destroyng me, I also prefer to do things Holistically.

In the end, I had to go to the doctor. I explained my symptoms again, and finally, I was given omeprazole. Still, I continued to look for a more natural form of treatement, thank god for the internet, where I discovered the apple treatment, does not cure but keeps the acid down I eat two applesa a day, after lunch and dinner, I take one omprezole at night before I go to sleep.

You have no idea what a relief to have my life back, he has a book showing how to use the things you have in your kitchen to cure it, its an Ebook and I am going to get it. Once I have gotten it and tired it, I will repoet back, thaks to my lovely daughter for finding this website and sending to me, and I love broccoli.

Perhaps the best solution for most people with heart burn. There are chemical compounds in broccoli that increase calcium absorption and allow the calcium to prolong its benefits in the gut to act as a buffer against over acidity. Furthermore, the broccoli will assist in allowing the intrinsic factor to work for the body. The optimum ph for the intrinsic factor (glycoprotein) is 7. In a more acidic environment the intrinsic factor does not bind to vitamin B 12.
Broccoli itself is high in calcium, (a very absorbable form of calcium) which buffers the over acidity, and in turn allows the binding of glycoprotein with B 12 in the duodenum.

I would like to know more about the possible benefits of eating broccoli as an alternative to taking either Prilosec or Omeprezole.
I understand that taking either one of these drugs interferes with the absorption of “something” (can’t remember what). Are there any studies done to substantiate this claim?
PEOPLE’S PHARMACY RESPONSE: SOME READERS HAVE FOUND BROCCOLI HELPFUL AGAINST HEARTBURN, AND THERE IS RESEARCH SHOWING IT CAN ATTACK H. PYLORI IN THE STOMACH. IT IS NOT CLEAR THAT EATING BROCCOLI WILL BE AN ADEQUATE SUBSTITUTE FOR OMEPRAZOLE IN ALL SITUATIONS. OMEPRAZOLE (PRILOSEC) CAN INTERFERE WITH THE ABSORPTION OF VITAMIN B12.

Not a Surprise. Your mother always told you to eat your Broccoli. Broccoli may have many beneficial properties that have yet to be discovered.
