How do you manage heartburn? Many people use over-the-counter medicines such as Pepcid or Nexium. Others, presumably with more chronic or more serious reflux, are taking prescription medication such as dexlansoprazole (Dexilant). But lots of folks find that home remedies can be really helpful against heartburn symptoms. Some readers report success with cabbage juice.
Cabbage Juice as a Heartburn Remedy:
Q. I suffered with “dodgy stomach” for a year: cramps, gas, low energy, brain fog. These symptoms would come and go.
My diet is already plant-based, and I am otherwise fit and healthy. My GP tested me for everything, and my labs and ultrasound results were normal. Endoscopy found “mild gastritis” and my doctor prescribed omeprazole. This helped, but my stomach never went back to 100 percent. I didn’t go back to my GP, because my symptoms were manageable.
After a bit of research, I started drinking cabbage juice. From day three, ALL my symptoms were completely gone!
I juice a 1-inch slice of fresh green cabbage together with a carrot and a pear. This makes a medium sized glass of juice, which I drink first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
I drink it down quickly as it tastes horrible. Instantly my sinuses start to tingle, a strange but pleasant sensation. This lasts for a couple hours. I drink the same again in the evening meal. Cabbage juice is more powerful for me than omeprazole.
Cabbage Juice in Medical History:
A. You are not the first person to tell us that cabbage juice helped against heartburn. There is very little research on this approach, but we did find a reference from long ago: California Medicine, Jan. 1949. This focused on peptic ulcer rather than acid reflux.
The same physician, Dr. Garnett Cheney, was on the faculty at Stanford University School of Medicine. He conducted a placebo-controlled trial at San Quentin Prison demonstrating a 92 percent “success” ratio for healing peptic ulcers with concentrated cabbage juice (California Medicine, Jan. 1956).
For those who might find cabbage juice a challenge, we offer many more remedies for heartburn in our eGuide to Overcoming Digestive Disorders.
Getting Off Acid Suppressing Pills with Old German Remedy:
Q. After my first pregnancy, I had terrible heartburn. I was quite miserable; nothing I tried worked well enough.
I wasn’t sleeping properly because of the reflux, so I decided to visit my doctor as a last resort. I was prescribed a drug that gave me relief, but my doctor said I would probably need to take it regularly from then on. I liked the relief but hated the idea of lifelong dependence on a pill.
I came across an old German remedy for chronic heartburn and decided to give it a try: Juice a fresh cabbage and drink half a cup three times a day for 30 days.
I did this and did not take the prescribed pills while I drank the juiced cabbage. This cured the problem.
A. As far as we can tell, there have been no scientific studies of cabbage juice against heartburn. Although there are lots of success stories on the web (much like yours), there are also reports that cabbage juice made things worse.
What Causes Heartburn?
Heartburn can be caused by many factors. Some people have an infection called Helicobacter pylori that can cause ulcers or gastritis. There is evidence that compounds in the cabbage family of vegetables, especially broccoli sprouts, reduce inflammation and kill the H. pylori bacteria (Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, May 24, 2013). Perhaps that is why cabbage juice helped you. Scientists report that red cabbage inhibits some digestive enzymes linked to obesity and diabetes (Podsedek et al, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Aug. 23, 2017).
There are many other suggestions of remedies to combat chronic heartburn in our Guide to Overcoming Digestive Disorders. In it, we also discuss H. pylori and the drug regimens used to eradicate it. Tell about your favorite heartburn remedy below.

I have been taking prilosec for 30 years. It’s a godsend for me. I used to have heartburn on a daily basis, and prilosec gave me relief. The reason is that I have a hiatal hernia. I have never seen that reason discussed by you.

I do the same but I just steam the cabbage and douse it with butter and salt. Yummy
Drinking apple cider vinegar will also cure the acid stomach.
In my experience, it comes from eating wheat which is heavily doused with herbicides.

While 9 months pregnant I had severe, unbearable heartburn & my mom suggested using celery juice to neutralize the stomach acid. You chew on a couple of stalks BUT you have to spit out the pulp/fiber or it won’t work as well or at all. So I did chew on some stalks & just swallowed the celery juice & it really did relieve the severe heartburn.

I juiced three cabbages a week for fellow worker in alcohol industry who had bleeding stomach ulcers. One month of this, and ulcer healed and was so much better. Then the person started drinking alcohol again. Instructions of where to purchase juicer was then given.

I drink one quart of ginger tea (3 teabags, steeped all day) every day, in the early evening. This has kept me off PPIs for almost ten years. I had been on them for fifteen years (prescribed by my physician) and developed many food intolerances, most notably gluten and dairy.

Why not eat raw or cooked cabbage or sauerkraut or coleslaw? Why does it need to be cabbage JUICE to relieve heartburn?

I have heard that aloe vera juice works as well.

I used to chew almonds but then tried fennel seed, and that worked really well. Then I developed a very sore mouth, tongue, etc. MD said “burning mouth syndrome,” common in older women, unknown cause, no known cure. I decided to stop the fennel, and after a week my mouth was 85% better but heart burn was back. I’m doing OK with almonds again but will try cabbage ASAP.

I’m gonna try it next time. I usually use pepto or DGL, which usually work okay, but cabbage has to be cheaper . . . and it’s food!

I suffered with “dodgy stomach” for 12 months; cramps, wind, low energy, brain fog. Symptoms would come and go. My diet is already plant-based, apart from this I am fit and healthy. My GP tested me for everything: bloods & ultra sound all normal. Camera in both ends found “mild gastritis” with some fizzing/bubbling (whatever that means). Was prescribed Omaprazole 1 tablet twice per day for 30 days. This helped but the stomach never felt 100%. I couldn’t be bothered to go back to my GP, he had tried to help me and my symptoms were manageable. After a bit of research I started drinking cabbage juice 10 days ago, and from day 3 ALL my symptoms had completely gone! I juice fresh green cabbage, just a 1 inch slice (a whole cabbage in 5 days) with 1 carrot and 1 pear.
I use a cheap centrifugal juicer, I’ve since learned that a masticating juicer would be better. This makes a medium sized glass of juice which I drink 1st thing in the morning on an empty stomach. I drink it down quickly as it tastes horrible (just get it down your neck). Instantly my sinuses start to tingle, a strange but pleasant sensation. This lasts for a couple hours. I drink the same again before my evening meal or before bed. My symptoms eased off within 24 hours and were completely gone from day 3. To me cabbage juice is more powerful than the drug I was prescribed. You can feel positive effects on the body instantly. I still get the sinus buzz after drinking. It worked so well for me, I feel amazing. Please give it try.

Hello. I really want to try the cabbage juice for my acid reflux. I was prescribed Prilosec but i had to stop it because of the side effects. Then, I had to take Nexium but I can’t take the side effects of that either. Just wondering how do you take the cabbage juice? Is it before or after meal? Thank you.

I have never tried cabbage juice for heart burn, but have put a cabbage leaf on a painful joint and or muscle and the pain eased off so much I didn’t even need to repeat the treatment. Wonder if anyone else has tried this?

Had horrible heartburn and nausea from the heartburn during pregnancy. My mom told me to chew on celery sticks and suck the juice but spit out the fiberous part. I didn’t want to take any meds so I tried it and it worked beautifully. It was the worst heartburn EVER so the celery was a godsend.

I haven’t had first-hand cabbage experience but heard from a friend that an elderly Eastern European lady told her to put cabbage leaves in her nursing bra when she was very sore. It worked for her.

Tn the early 1970 I had a real bad bad ulcer (a bottle of COGNAC a week) my bros in law: NO MORE alcohol even a drop! I blended a quart of medium cabbage twice a day for 6 months; now I have 1/2 a bottle of 2, 5 bucks CHUCK a day. It also helps a lot strained ankles just soften a leaf wrap it around the place after the job by the chiropractor.

Is it true that Prilosec is bad for you? I heard that it wasn’t a good medicine and produced many side effects to your body. Also, heard that once you start taking it, it is hard to stop. Think the cabbage juice would aid in getting off Prilosec? You have mentioned this before in another article but can’t remember the exact article.
People’s Pharmacy response: Prilosec can be helpful, but for most people it should not be a long-term drug. Here are some suggestions to help you quit, after you discuss it with your doctor:

Fresh green cabbage leaves are used to alleviate/stop milk production in the breasts. I had many complications after birth and I could not breast feed. After 3 days of cold unwashed green cabbage leaves tucked into my bra all my milk dried up and except for some milk ducts/lymph nodes towards my back, all swelling was gone.
