Q. I was having trouble with my nails. Although I tried a number of remedies, some very expensive, nothing seemed to work. Then my daughter told me to try castor oil.

I put it on my nails and leave it on for 15 or 20 minutes, then rub in as much as possible and wipe the residue off. It has made all the difference. I'm glad I found something so effective and yet so simple. I don't get hangnails anymore either.

A. Thanks for the tip. Others have found almond oil can also be helpful.

I slather castor oil all over my hands and sleep in non-latex gloves. I also do it on my feet and sleep in white socks. It really helps nails and dry, cracked skin.

Yes castor oil works wonders! I found this out because I started using a nail hardener a few months ago which my mom gave to me and it improved my nails. I read the ingredients and saw that it has castor oil in it so I researched castor oil for nail and found out that it conditions and hardens brittle nails. I started putting it on my nails at night when they are bare (in between using the nail hardener) and also even with the hardener on. My nails are now so strong! They don’t split, crack or peel and it takes a lot to break them (I did manage to break one and it broke down low to my nail bed and bled :( but that just showed me how much pressure it takes to break my nails now). I have just been practicing being more careful with my hands and nails because I am not use to them being this long! I also found that argan oil and lemon oil is also great and gives them a really healthy, pink and white look, no need for a french manicure! Good luck!

I started applying castor oil to my finger nails a week and a half ago. My nails are already are stronger and healthier! I can’t believe how much they have improved in such a short time.

I tried everything for my peeling, brittle nails, including DermaNail from the dermatologist. I always use rubber gloves in the kitchen. My nails were broken all the way to the quick. I thought it was a sign of a terrible illness. Nothing helped and then my manicurist researched and suggested Vaseline. I placed three jars around the house and took one to work. I slathered some on every time I passed a jar. In a couple of weeks my nails improved. After a couple of months, they are hard and normal. Vaseline is inexpensive, convenient, does not stain and sure did work for me. Now I am tackling my feet.

I am so glad for this remedy. My nails just crack down the middle and break off at the drop of a hat. I have hangnails all of the time. I will see how this works. The doctors have paid no attention to it.
