two coconuts, one split open

Q. I am 51 and a seven-year breast cancer survivor. I went through chemo and radiation, took tamoxifen until my hysterectomy 2 yrs ago. Since chemo I have had severe vaginal dryness. Sex was painful with burning and irritation for days afterwards.

About a month ago I came across this website. I started using vitamin E and noticed a difference immediately. A couple weeks ago I switched to Organic Coconut Oil from Trader Joes in the morning and night. It’s wonderful. No more dryness!

Intercourse is pleasurable again (coconut oil is not sticky and smells great). There is no swelling, burning or irritation afterwards. Reading all of the comments on your website has been a life saver.

Thank you ladies and thank you Peoples Pharmacy.

A. We are so glad you have experienced good results from the coconut oil. Others report similar benefits from olive oil.

My vaginal pain has been attributable to scarring for years. My uterus was removed at age 33 but my ovaries were left. None of the expensive creams helped the pain. I am going to try the coconut oil and olive oil. I don’t believe it can make the pain worse. Although I have been told repeatedly there is nothing that will help.

My gynecologist recommended the cocoa butter wafers for vaginal dryness: insert one at bedtime. So, I did buy some (online). I use 1/2 a wafer. It melts quick and really, really works! My only issue is, although I love the smell of chocolate, it is a bit weird having that bag of cocoa butter wafers in the bedroom/bathroom – sure does have a strong smell of chocolate! They do sell a “deodorized” cocoa butter wafer, but I was afraid to order it, not knowing what smell they have, as well as having some other additive. Has anyone tried the deorderized cocoa butter wafers?

I’ve been post menopausal for over 40 years due to a total hysterectomy. About 2 years ago my doctor diagnosed me with Atrophic Vaginitis because of the horrible burning. My daughter is a distributor for natural oils, and she recommended that I try coconut oil. Love it!!! It works better then Premarin. I put it in a Vaginal applicator and then freeze it. Amazon sells vaginal applicators since drug stores don’t usually.

LOL – I’m 70 and have been using coconut and/or olive oil for several years but it never occurred to me to use it on ME! We use it as a lubricant on HIM as part of our foreplay and getting it inserted in me that way is a convenient, Just-In-Time method, much easier than freezing and making capsules and manually inserting it ahead of time, etc.

Very informative thank you. I have used coconut oil externally for quite a while now and works well for me. I would like to try the Vitamin E internally but I have to take a statin for high cholesterol and have read various reports and forums some say Vitamin E can be used others say under no circumstances must the two be mixed! Can any one offer any advice? Many thanks.

Just diagnosed with cervical cancer. Tried to have a colposcopy done to remove it and the Doctor was unable to do so because I was so dry that the speculum tore my skin. She put me on Premarin for 3 weeks with additional coconut oil every night. Sure hope this works, they can’t do the procedure until this is resolved! Thank you for the ice cube idea :)

Hi, I have been taking 40miligrams of Lipitor a station for years. The Dr. also prescribed vitamin E because I have a low amount in my system.. I have not had a problem with it. I had a complete hysterectomy nearly 25yrs. ago. I have severe dryness and the Premarin didn’t help much. I had never heard about using coconut oil or any of the other oils for dryness. Can’t wait to see if it helps me.

I melt organic unrefined coconut oil and use an eyedropper to fill empty capsules (found at health food stores). I then refrigerate & once solid, store in fridge in a repurposed (dark) plastic Rx bottle. I insert one per night using a plastic plunger made for inserting vaginal yeast infection medications (can also be purchased at drug store). be sure to clean plunger daily with hot soapy water. Can also use plunger to inset Vitamin E capsules! This system works like a charm!

I was about to start Vagifem due to vaginal dryness, and was not looking forward to it due to all the side effects. The burning has been so bad that I just didn’t think I had a choice until I found this. I never thought of a natural oil, like coconut or Vitamin E. I don’t feel any burning inside. It just burns on the outside, so I am wondering if this will stop the burning on the outside too? I have been using Lidocaine to stop the burning.

This is my first exposure to this. I was given the estrace cream as well and don’t want to run the risk of side effects and cancer. After reading about Vitamin E oil and/or Coconut Oil, I’d like to try it. If I make suppositories with capsules, do they just pop out of the capsule when ready to use?

To make your own coconut oil suppositories, you can take milk shake/smoothie plastic straws (the are bigger diameter).

Cut straws in half as that smaller size is easier to squeeze the finished coconut oil sticks through. With needle nose pliers, grab one end of the straw and leave a little sticking out from the edge of the pliers. Run a lighter (I used a fireplace lighter) along that edge and it will melt..slide the needle nose pliers over that edge to seal it (crimp). Place straws, crimped side down, into a freezer safe cup or mug. This will catch any oil leakage in case you didn’t get a good seal on one of the straws.

Then melt the coconut oil and pour into the straws. Freeze until set. Cut off the crimped end and squeeze the stick of oil out. Cut with a knife to desired sizes and store in fridge or freezer. Insert as needed.

I was thinking about using coconut oil in the same area due to a health issue that I’m suffering, but worry about getting an infection. Don’t you worry about sticking your hand into the coconut oil and do you use the same oil for cooking, perhaps other people are using the coconut oil too? I was using a vitamin E capsule inserted “up there” but it’s beginning to give me itchiness, now I’m thinking of switching to coconut oil.

Help!!! I had a hysterectomy in 2007 and also had my ovaries removed. Intercourse has been painful ever since but I can live with that but 8 months ago I started having burning, stinging, raw pain on my outer vagina area. (No itching what so ever). I can’t wear underwear or anything tight because it just rubs that area raw. I’ve been to a couple doctors and I just had a painful biopsy and the good news is I don’t have cancer but they still don’t know what is causing it. They never see anything with an exam and lab comes back normal. This is what they have done or thought. Vaginal dryness so I’ve tried numerous estrogen creams, stress, psychological and now allergies so I got some kind of antifungal cream. I’m in such a bad place because no one can help me.

I am a 61 year young 10 year Breast Cancer Survivor. My breast Cancer was ER PR positive. The chemo immediately slammed my body into menopause causing Vaginal atrophy. Having intercourse with my husband was unbearable, extremely painful and I always bled afterward. I tried the expensive ESting Ring, it helped some but made me nervous because it puts small amounts of hormones in the vaginal area. We were both extremely depressed & sad thinking that our sex life was over. A couple couple of weeks ago I went to my yearly Oncologist appointment and expressed this problem with his female assistant. She told me try using coconut oil as a lubricant, she stated several of her patients were in the same boat and it helped them tremendously. After four months of not having intercourse with my husband I decided to give it a try last night. Well low & behold it worked, I didn’t have any pain during intercouse and woke up this morning with no soreness!! Woo hoo!! a Godsend for sure. It is natural, not sticky and very inexpensive. I have also been using it on my legs for dryness, on my eyelashes to prevent breakage and in my Yorkies food for their skin & hair. This truly is a miracle cure for me. Happy to be able to have an active sex life, life is great!!

I had a revelation from my new gynecologist about the post-menopausal dryness thing which has been ruining our sex life for too many years. She asked me WHERE I felt the most pain with intercourse , and for me it was almost upon entrance, NOT far up in the vagina where I have been inserting the compounded cream my previous doctor (a he, not a she) had prescribed for me. She said I should start applying it DIRECTLY onto the most tender or dry areas and to rub it it with the coconut oil also. She also said that even though my prescription is to insert it 2-3x a week, I should use the coconut oil every night. To have been wasting all this time using the prescription in the spot where it didn’t count – well, what can I say. At least I discovered what to do now, and I wanted to pass it on.

What I do is form capsule suppositories with the hardened coconut oil in plastic wrap or foil wrap and then freeze them. When you are ready to insert them, they are hard, cool, and melt once inside your vaginal cavity.

Im 52 and was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer Stage 3c last September. My Oncologist also suggested using Coconut oil, baby oil, Vitamin E, Vasoline, or anything that’s not water based and that is thicker than water to use as a lubricant to help with vaginal dryness. Having sex with my boyfriend was also very good before this happened and Im in severe pain now when we do. Chemo also makes it worse. I see someones post about getting coconut oil suppositories. Where do you get these ? Ive seen the coconut oil in a jar, but the suppositories would work much better

No. Just wash your hands really well (especially under nails where germs congregate!) put a glob of the oil if solid in your palm and close your hand. It will soften enough in seconds to then use your other hand (fingers) to smooth it over the sore area. Just noticed the date of your question …. hopefully by now you feel better.

You can purchase a jar of organic coconut oil in a health food store, gourmet food store or online. Scoop several tablespoons out with a clean spoon and put that in a smaller jar with a screw-on lid to use as an intimate lubricant.

Keep your coconut oil in a cool place out of the sun. Regular coconut oil will melt at 76 degrees so it will start turning to liquid at that temp and will melt immediately upon putting it on your skin or in your vagina. Using your fingertips or a plastic cosmetic spatula, just scoop a small amount (about dime sized) out of your jar reserved for this purpose, and apply to the outside and inside of your vagina. Your partner can lubricate his penis with it as well. It is a slick, lasting, pleasantly scented moisturizer/lubricant with antibacterial and antifungal properties. Just try to always use clean hands and don’t double dip in the container to keep it clean. Enjoy!

Make sure to use organic virgin coconut oil. It is pressed not chemically removed from the coconut meat. Also the fatty acids remain in their long chain form. This keeps the oil from blocking your pores and causing irritation. The light scent goes away and can be masked by many perfumes or essential oils. It also works in your sensitive puppies ears if you keep battling yeast there too! Don’t be shy, just try.

Hi Sarah!! Well done by the way!
I too am a BMT recipient just January this year. I too am finding my vagina getting more and more dry and raw… I had bacterial vaginosis which I took antibiotics for a week. Those symptoms went away but vagina now red and sore so doctor prescribed anti thrush medications. Still no real improvements…in fact getting more and more sore each day.
I have tried oestrogen cream applied internally and externally but that is not something I would want to use long term due to side effects.
I too am considering natural alternatives….seeing doctor again today. I think is most likely GVHD……so I think it important to find a long term natural lubricant to keep that area moistened and soft is the way to go. I am gonna ask today if she thinks it ok to use coconut oil, or olive oil etc both internally and externally without any fear of causing any unwanted infections etc..
I was also gonna ask her about bio-identical hormones to replace oestrogen….anythings worth a try I say!!
Apart from that they may just increase immuno-suppressives etc until situation stabilises. But still we need a natural long term solution for this area.
Please let me know how you go with this, I can keep you filled in if you like. Good to share info with someone in same situation!!
I live in NSW Australia by the way. Where are you from?

Coconut oil is absolutely amazing to use for dryness but that’s not all. I recently suffered from a horrible yeast infection, it was so bad that it actually burned my vulva area:/ after being treated for the yeast infection I was not able to have sex for a week (I’m a newlywed btw so having a yeast infection in the first couple weeks of marriage is not ideal) even attempting to have sex brought such pain from the burn on my vulva from the yeast infection.
I started using coconut oil not only on my vulva area but inside my vagina. Many people have asked how cause it’s a solid and what not, but the oil melts when it comes in contact with your skin cause your body temp is enough to melt the oil. I just want to say, coconut oil has really been an amazing factor in healing from a horrible yeast infection. I highly recommend for anti fungal uses and dryness!

I have had a dry vagina since post menopause almost 2 years ago and tried all of the leading lubs (replense, silk, play etc) all with no success. I have recently been prescribed vagifem insertable capsules and alongside use of a lub has made very little difference. Sex was almost intolerable. I have recently been using coconut oil (raw extra virgin organic co) and the difference is unbelievable. It can be purchased from supermarkets. It is easily applied by using a spoon to remove from the jar and then simply insert (or have your husband / partner do it) and as soon as the co touches your body it instantly starts to melt. The smell is very light and pleasant and my vagina is moist and supple all of the time. My husband can fully penetrate me easily which was never achievable using the various lubs. If you havent tried co you are missing out. I now have my sex life back and even with spontaneous sex the co is fantastic. I had a dry skin condition on my leg which the co cleared up within days, none of the prescribed creams could do that.

Easiest way is to put the organic coconut oil in the fridge and it will get solid. Cut out a piece with a knife (aprox 1/2 to 3/4 inch in diameter) and just push it up the vagina with your fingers at bedtime! No applicators needed!! The solid block will melt within a few seconds from your body heat.

Many women who have had regular sex with no problems, find that after the menopause starts having sex becomes very painful, causing bleeding, etc. I use SUPPOSITORIES WITH NATURAL VIT. It is easy to handle because it doesn’t melt in my fingers like coconut oil, but does melt quickly at body temperature. A disk can be broken in half for anyone preferring a little less. I slip one in after getting in bed so there is no problem with stains. If you need to use one during the day, a panty liner eliminates any stain problems.
Another great solution to prevent dryness from starting is intercourse (this was recommended by my GYN &#9786). She said it brings blood to the vaginal tissue and keeps it thicker. Of course, you need to be well lubricated first and the cocoa butter works really good for that. She had me on Premarin Cream at first, but I just didn’t want to continue on it — besides the cocoa wafers are easier to insert than going through the process of opening the tube of Premarin, filling an applicator and then trying to put the cap back on without more cream squeezing out.

I use the “syringe” that I got with my Premarin cream and it works very well.

This has been my saving grace. I decided on a 5mL syringe (needless) of course. Warm coconut oil to room temp, no problem no mess. Hubby loves it!!

    Hi guys,
There are a few ways to put coconut oil up there. Go to Kmart, Target Big W who ever, they would have in there kitchen section silicon ice cube trays in the form of stars, fishes, squares etc… they are very small and perfect for inserting into the vagina. Basically put the coconut somewhere warm so it can become a liquid. Once done fill up the fishes, or stars and put them in the fridge, after about 10 mins maybe less you can use them. Because the dish is made of rubber its easy to push out . its awesome……. just type silicon ice trays into google to find an image if you r not sure.

I form it into little balls or egg shapes and the put them in a baggie. Stick them in the fridge and let them harden. Then stick one inside quickly before it melts. I did this for a yeast infection not dryness. I’m only in my 20’s. I used about 1/2 – 1 tsp per “ball”. Then just rub some on the outside. My husband and I use coconut oil and coconut oil only for sex lube. Tastes ok, doesn’t get sticky or dry out, smells good and is good for you :)

Thanks for your info, but what I really want to know is…do you use this every day or just when you have intercourse?

I’ve found pantyliners to work really well for this problem. The benefits far outweigh this small detail. IMHO of course.

Because it’s rather solid in the jar it’s easier to simply use a utensil to break off small chunks. It melts quickly so try not to handle it until you’re lying on your back. Then you’re in position to insert it like a suppository using your fingers. There will be excess oil because it melts so quickly so rub that on the labia. I know someone who makes little balls on a sheet pan to freeze and later store in a bowl in the fridge. Good luck!

Another question… My Premarin is almost gone and I don’t want to renew the script. So, do I use the coconut oil every day, or do I use it twice a week like I do the Premarin? Why don’t doctors tell you these things? Are they just trying to “push” meds?
FYI, I did a Google search for the uses for coconut oil the other day and got a site with 100 uses for the product! WOW! I am now using it as a facial moisturizer. It feels somewhat greasy at first, but I may be using too much, though I find it leaves my skin very soft. This may prove to be a miracle product after all.

Nature’s Way just came out with a liquid coconut oil, which can be applied with an eye dropper. I would think nighttime would be best to apply, so as not to ruin clothing. A little goes a long way!

I finally broke down and bought coconut oil at Walmart. I got the 100% coconut oil. It was such a relief to finally have something that works for vaginal dryness for us. We are in our 60’s and we have had this problem for several years. We have tried all kinds of products. Most just gave me burning and poor results.
It does not seem to stain, and we just spoon oil into a small jar by the bed, we use our fingers to apply. We use it as is. For less than $10 you can’t lose for trying if all else fails you can cook with it.

Here’s another use for coconut oil. My elderly mom (98) was troubled for a long time with dry, flaking, VERY ITCHY scalp. Her skin is thin, because of her advanced age. I was afraid to use Tea Tree Oil or dandruff shampoo, as I’ve found them drying and irritating.
I rubbed a teaspoon of solid, cold coconut oil into her scalp. She said it felt great. It made her hair just a little greasy, but not too bad, and it rinsed out easily during her weekly shampoo.
VOILA! No more dry, itchy, flaky scalp. I reapply it once a month for her.
    Highly recommend it,

Can you buy the pure coconut butter anywhere, or do you have to get it at a health food or natural food store? Well, it stinks that Premarin only works if it’s used. ARGH! I don’t want to be on this forever. It’s good to know the coconut will work as a lubricant too. As for staining, I’m finding the Premarin stains also. I like the idea of using it before going to bed, and that’s when I use the Premarin. This way there’s probably less staining. Thanks for your info. I appreciate it!

How about putting the coconut oil inside the vagina before bedtime? Then your nice clothing will be less likely to stain and also gravity won’t make it leak out.

I use pure cocoa butter. There are no additional ingredients. It seems to have a higher melting temperature than coconut oil. This may or may not be a plus for you. I have had no negative tissue reactions to either product. Of course anyone can be allergic to anything. Premarin will only help as long as you use it. It replaces some of your natural hormones. It is much more effective than either of these topicals in reversing vaginal dryness but it doesn’t serve as a personal lubricant. The oils work well to increase comfort during sex. Remember that they are oils, so they will stain whatever they contact. Hardly ideal.

Anon…so, you’re saying using cocoa butter works as well as coconut oil? Is it safe or does it contain additional ingredients? The thought of inserting something that could cause chafing, infection or soreness has me concerned. I am finding the Premarin is helping with the dryness, but I’m also concerned with the possible side effects, and if when I stop using it (it’s not recommended to use for the long term) if the symptoms will come back. I do think coconut oil is in it’s purest form, but I don’t like the idea of “leaking” either. Argh! It’s tough getting old, huh? Thanks for the info you’ve posted.

I also had breast cancer, was treated with Tamoxifen and suffer with the same problem. I made the coconut oil suppositories by using one of these methods:
    1. Warm the coconut oil until it is moldable. You can soften it slowly in the MW if it is solid, or sit it in warm water. Put a 1/2 teaspoon on a small square of plastic wrap. Squish into a bullet shape and store in the freezer until needed.
OR 2. Melt coconut oil in the MW. When it is somewhat cooler but still a liquid, pour about 1 teaspoon into each compartment of a miniature ice cube tray (they make water-bottle size cubes). Place in freezer until solid. Turn out and store them all in a container in the freezer until needed. You can use your finger to insert them, or buy a devise at the pharmacy.
I used these for quite a while and they helped a lot. Then I realized that the oil was gradually leaking through my undies and ruining my clothes! I found sanitary napkins very drying so I no longer use the oil. I tried cocoa butter with the same result. Going off sugar did not help me. Doctor was not helpful. I guess that is why we are called survivors.

I have been using coconut oil for vaginal dryness for quite some time and find it solves the problem. I use it whenever I feel an irritation occurring. It can be applied manually with the finger but this does not always get it to the irritated spot. I use a plastic plunger-type applicator that came with a Vaginal Lubricant called Creme de la Femme which I bought on line.
The coconut oil comes in a jar and turns to a liguid if kept in a warm location, but turns solid if in a cool location – not necessarily in the fridge. If you have the plunger, all you need to do is be sure the oil is fairly solid and use a clean spoon to pack it in the plunger – no problem. Some use a tampon dipped in the oil. Some cool the oil and place it in a folded piece of foil, put it in the freezer, to make a long strip that resembles a suppository. Hope my suggestions help.

You mentioned vitamin E (which is usually ingested orally) and “switched to coconut oil, morning and night”. Orally? Vaginally? How much? Clearly, lots of people are interested!!

I would say that it is applied inside the vagina, with your fingers and inside the labia with your fingers. Start with a small amount because if you use too much it can be messy. It can also be used as a lubricant on the male. I hope I’m not offending anyone, but several people seem to need this info.

I would like to know more about this too. I’m using Premarin cream, but I don’t like the idea of the side effects, so something natural that works sounds wonderful, but how does it come, as a cream, liquid? And how is it applied??? Any info appreciated.

You can also use shea butter, it is very moisturizing, however it appears that the application needs to happen daily, not just when one is going to have sex.

The suggestion of using coconut oil for vaginal dryness sounds very promising. I lived in a country that used a lot of coconut oil and milk in their cooking and would only suggest that everyone to be very careful with the freshness of the oil. It goes rancid very easily.
My personal experience with vaginal dryness and its cure is as follows: I started experiencing vaginal dryness with the onset of menopause. At that time I tried all kinds of lubricants including different oils: sesame oil, olive oil, and others without any relief. I didn’t try Vitamin E because is gives me insomnia. Finally, the one thing that worked for me was cutting sugar out of my diet. If I go off of my sugar-free diet for a week or two, the vaginal dryness comes back. If I go back on the sugar-free diet, it goes away. Sweet fruits and sugar substitutes do not seem to bother me, nor do high glycemic foods like white potatoes. White or brown sugar including sucranat seems to be the culprit.

Great idea, I have a similar health history, almost exact, but how do you apply it up there, I have had problems, is there a device you can use? the logistics is what I have issues with, not the product. thanks for any ideas, sorry for getting so personal here :)
