Q. I am a 56-year-old female who had my thyroid removed in 2006. Fortunately, there were no signs of cancer.
Of course, without a thyroid gland I have been on thyroid medication ever since. I am having trouble keeping my hormone levels where they would like to see them so the doctors are always changing my dose and my meds.
Because of all this I have a tendency to gain weight. I am having trouble losing it, so my doctors have suggested I try Contrave. I am wondering what you think of this medication.
A. We have some serious concerns about Contrave. It is a formulation containing two different drugs,Bupropion and Naltrexone.
Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is an antidepressant medication that has also been used to help people stop smoking (under the brand Zyban). Naltrexone (Revia, Depade) is an opioid antagonist (blocker). In other words, Naltrexone reverses the effects of narcotics like heroin, morphine or other opioid medications like oxycodone (Oxycontin, Percocet, Roxicodone, etc) or hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lorcet, etc). Naltrexone has been approved to help people overcome narcotic addiction as well as alcohol dependence.
Why Would Bupropion and Naltrexone Help People Lose Weight?
There was a hint that, individually, bupropion or naltrexone might help people lose weight. One of the side effects of bupropion is loss of appetite. The drug affects neurochemicals in the brain to alleviate depression, so it is not entirely surprising that it might impact a range of behaviors, including eating.
Naltrexone blocks natural opioid receptors in the brain, which is why it has been used to treat alcoholism and other compulsive behaviors (gambling, hair pulling, kleptomania, etc.). It might counteract compulsive eating.
How Good Is Contrave for Losing Weight?
The first thing you must know is that the clinical trials involved people who were very seriously overweight. Subjects had to have a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or greater. For example, someone who is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 212 pounds would have a BMI of 30.42. People with a BMI of 27 or greater would be considered eligible for the drug only if they had some other condition like high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Bottom line, this is not a drug approved for modest weight loss of 10 to 15 pounds.
In a company-sponsored trial, people lost about 4 to 5 percent of their weight after a year compared to placebo. Something, but not a dramatic difference. In studies involving over 4,000 people, those on Contrave lost roughly 8 pounds more than those on placebo if they stayed on the drug for more than six months. These people were also engaged in a weight-management program in addition to taking the pills.
Are you excited yet? We’re not dazzled either. Here’s a fascinating statistic. A lot of people taking Contrave pulled out of the clinical trials. According to the official prescribing data that number was 46%. That is surprisingly high. At least half pulled out because of side effects associated with Contrave.
Side Effects of Contrave
So what are the problems with this weight-loss medication? First and foremost are the digestive tract complications! Roughly one third of the clinical trial subjects taking Contrave experienced GI complaints while taking this pill.
- Digestive distress (nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, belching, gastroenteritis, taste disturbances, etc.)
- Headache
- Dizziness, vertigo
- Insomnia, sleep disorders
- Dry mouth, thirst, dehydration
- Anxiety, irritability, jittery, tremor, palpitations
- Confusion, cognitive impairment, memory problems, amnesia, abnormal dreams
- Ringing in the ears
- Sweating
- Increased blood pressure
Special Warnings Regarding Contrave
The FDA has required the manufacturer of Contrave to advise potential patients about a risk of suicidal thoughts and advises families and caregivers to monitor people taking the drug for suicidal thoughts or behaviors. There is also reference to “neuropsychiatric reactions,” so people should be watched for any unusual thinking patterns or behaviors.
Bottom Line from The People’s Pharmacy:
Contrave should not be considered a routine weight loss pill. It is approved for those who are really obese or overweight with a medical condition like hypertension or type 2 diabetes. The complication, though, is that the Contrave may actually increase blood pressure. And people with type 2 diabetes may be more susceptible to side effects like nausea and vomiting.
The side effects of Contrave are not trivial. Although a high incidence of nausea is likely to discourage people from eating, we do not think this is a desirable way to lose weight.
Our conclusion is that weight loss on Contrave is modest at best and side effects make this drug problematic. A program of regular exercise and carbohydrate restriction with support from friends, family and even a supervised group may produce lasting benefits without the risks of medications.
PS…you mention you are having problems getting your thyroid dose adjusted and that is in part contributing to your weight gain. You may find our Guide to Thyroid Hormones helpful in better understanding condition so that you might not need a diet pill at all.
If you have taken Contrave we would love to learn how you fared. Did you lose a lot of weight? Did you experience any side effects? Please share your story below in the comment section. And please vote on this article at the top of the page.

I know this is an older post but Contrave has been wonderful for me. As I was increasing the dosage, I would have a headache for a couple of days then it would disappear. The metallic taste never went away but the dry mouth did after a couple of months. Also have some gas but nothing painful. I have been taking it for three months and I have lost 27 pounds. The best part is I do not obsess over food. I have been overweight most of my life, and now I actually feel a freedom from thinking about food. I eat when hungry but stop when I am full. I no longer eat my feelings. My mood has lifted as well. I feel more like myself than I have in a couple of years.

Just started week 2 of Contrave. Increase in both appetite and cravings. Gaining weight.
Very discouraging but I’ll see what effect the higher doses later have.

I started generic Contrave through Found (the active drugs taken separately in a designated dosage amount). I have lost 55 pounds (over 7 months) without changing any habits or working out. It controls my hunger and I didn’t have the side effects others have expressed. I highly recommend Found. Since I’m not taking the name brand Contrave I can’t say if it does or doesn’t have the side effects mentioned. The two active ingredients do not.

Started Contrave. Only 3 days in with 1 a day I have extreme fatigue, disorientation, left arm throbbing and tingling. Am extremely cold. Not taking anymore!

I started contrave 7 weeks ago, and once I reached the max dose of 4 pills per day, I was unbearably nauseaous and couldn’t stop the dry heaves, as there was nothing in my stomach bc I couldn’t eat. I lost 8 lbs but only because I couldn’t eat. I had a constant metallic taste in my mouth that made me even more nauseated, and my bowel movements were rare, and like solid, hard rocks.I weaned down to 2 pills per day. 7 weeks later I had such vice-grip pain across my stomach, then diarrhea and sudden, severe cramps in the backs of my legs. I refuse to take this pill anymore. It’s the devil!! Not worth it, in my opinion!

I started taking Naltrexone with my Wellbutrin about two years ago. I lost about 40lbs in a year, with little exercise and low carb dieting which would have been nearly impossible to do on my own.
I had no noticEable side effects during that time, but now I am having some. I’ve been having dizzy spells upon standing, heart palpitations, and if I miss a day or two of taking it and pick back up, I get really urgent and frequent urination paired with abdominal cramping that feels like UTI cramps but isn’t.
I stopped taking it for a full week just to find out for sure if it was the Contrave causing these effects and it sure enough is. I am debating whether or not to stop taking it because this doesn’t feel good, but on the other hand NOTHING else has controlled my appetite. I’m torn.

I’m a 69 YO female. I began Conrave and started the dosage as directed. I began dosing on a Friday. For the first 3 weeks, each Saturday, I would have a headache, then Sunday I was so dizzy and nauseous that I could not do anything all day. Got better on Mondays. BUT, then I reached full dose (4 pills/day). Saturday – dizzy, nausea, headache, photo-sensitive, sound-sensitive. By Monday, same sypmtoms – no relief. Called the Contrave pharmacist who recommended I cut back to 3 pills/day. Tuesday, I was even sicker, if that was even possible. It took me 2 more days, no pills, before I began to feel somewhat normal.
Called Contrave phamacist again on Tuesday who said some people can never adjust to the full dose and to cut back to 2 per day. I stopped entirely by Tuesday night because the thought of being this sick for 5 days – I just couldn’t do it. So I started back on one pill on Sunday morning (4.5 days after the last dose). I was fine until about 6:00 p.m., and then the dizziness and nausea struck again. Today is Monday around 1:30 p.m. and I am still dizzy and a little nauseous. That’s it – I’m done.

I took contrive with Trulicity injections. In four days I was constipated, and the pain in my stomach was so bad I almost took myself the the ER. I have never experienced that kind of pain, and I will never take this again.

I have been on Contrave for 45 days and have lost 14 pounds by also doing intermittent fasting. But increasingly I am experiencing insomnia and brain zaps during the day. It feels like mini seizures. I need to lose weight but this is not worth it. I am going to ween off the Contrave and try just the I.F. and exercise.

I have been on Contrave for 3 weeks now. I am 64 years old and considered overweight with a BMI of 30. Only lost 2 pounds, but I think it is due to the side effects of nausea, stomach pain, and bad headaches. I am discontinuing Contrive, as this is not how I want to feel. Really wished it worked for me.

I have seen your ads on tv thought I would read about it. Sounds like there is allot of side effects. I am 62 female and I am type 2 diabetic ,with neuropathy, I take allot of meds. I am 5’1 and weigh 190 . I take lyrica and it makes you gain weight. I was thinking about asking my doctor about this , but I don’t know if I could take this because of the Lyrica .

OMG think twice before taking this drug!!! I have spent the last 60 + days with severe leg and feet pain.. Went to my Dr. Because I was in so much pain he asked me if I was taking any new drug It didn’t occur to me. He ordered a nerve study and sleep study after the New year.. I thought for sure I was getting neuropathy like my mother I was very scared.. after I left the Drs. I put it together Contrave and pain!!! Stopped taking and after four days the pain stopped. I would NOT take this drug.

I’ve been on contrave for 3 weeks. I now eat to survive and nothing more. It’s like I’ve lost interest. I still enjoy cooking but I don’t constently crave carbs anymore. I haven’t experienced most side effects except the ringing in my ears. That is horrible, and my head feels “ full” all the time, like pressure.
Sadly, I don’t know if I can continue taking contrave because this ringing is debilatating.

I am a female in her 60’s & started taking contrave around a year ago. The last script I filled was in Dec of 2017. It did help me & I lost 40 lbs.
However, it started making me feel sick to my stomach all the time. I lost enough weight and my bmi is good, so I stopped taking it. I still feel sick to my stomach quite a bit & fear I have a gastrointestinal ulcer or something.
I can’t eat much of anything without feeling nauseated. Nothing “sits” well with me anymore.

I am a 52 year old female. I was extremely overweight and other attempts to take off the weight were not successful. My insurance will not pay for weight loss surgery so that is not an option. I have been on Contrave for 3 months. I also joined Planet Fittness and have been faithfully working out. I have lost 30 pounds and 4 inches from my waist. I also lost an inch plus around my neck. I was so excited to lose the first 10%. I am thrilled with the results. I have had minor side effects but nothing impossible to deal with.

I am a 48 year old female. I have been on Contrave for 1 month. I am on a 1200 calorie /day diet and walk at least 30 minutes most days. I have lost 16lbs in one month on Contrave. Side effects: dry mouth, started right away just taking 1 pill daily. Also has some stomach cramping. When I was at 2 pills am and 1 pill pm I started getting hot flashes as well. I am at 2:2 now and the GI symptoms have increased. I only have mild nausea. Moderate cramping but not all the time.
I don’t drink soda at all anymore and I previously drank 4-6 Diet Pepsi per day. Contrave is an aid to help with cravings and suppress appetite but, without diet and exercise you will not see big results. It is not a miracle pill. My BMI when I started was 32 obese I am now 1 pound away from going to the overweight category and God willing will get to a Normal BMI soon. Best of luck everyone. Believe in yourself, you CAN make the changes!

55 yr old male. Been on contrave 5 days. Have lost 4 pounds, but I think it’s because of the terrible nausea and diarrhea . Not sure I can stay on it. The side effects are terrible. I am a busy realtor, and this is my busy time of year. I can’t sell houses if I am in the bathroom all the time!

I just began Week 3 and have not lost any weight. There is no difference in my well-being other than occasional constipation. No nausea, no headaches, no hot flashes — nothing, nada, zilch — including no difference in appetite or the way I feel about food. I am a young 63-year-old woman who is not obese, but definitely needs to lose 20 pounds. I didn’t sign up for the auto refill prescription, and now that I’ve gotten an email reminder, I just don’t think $99 is worth it. I can afford it, but I want to get a return on my money if you know what I mean! If I haven’t lost any weight by the end of this bottle, I will not refill the prescription.

I am a 68 year old female that works 40-50 hours a week as a busy Realtor. I have been on Contrave for about 6 months….it certainly has helped with the food cravings but basically have not lost any weight. I really only need to loose 20-25 lbs. I do have headaches occasionally, a little dizziness……….Just recently I have had muscle pain in different areas of my body but the most painful is on the balls of my feet. Not sure that at this “mature” age if Contrave is as effective. I am thinking of weaning myself off with my Doctor’s advise. Has anyone else experienced this much pain?

Hello, I started taking Contrave about 3 weeks ago and have experienced a lot of side effects. Dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, and hot flashes. I lost about 9lbs but I was having some lower back pain and thought it was a UTI. Had my urine checked and there was bilirubin in my urine which can mean issues with the liver. I have stopped taking Contrave and I am hoping since I haven’t been taking it for that long that there isn’t any permanent damage and the effects will reverse.

I started 10 days ago and the only side effect I have had is the weird dreams. I’m up to 1:1 pills a day, and I’ve lost 10lbs. I have no food cravings, more energy, and feel more focused. I’m grateful this is working for me, as I’ve read a lot with side effects way worse.

I’ve been on the Contrave for about one week. It is interesting in how it makes me respond to food, and for me, food can be in front of me, but, my mind and appetite are not fixated on it. The other issues I have noticed, is nausea, weird dreams and a lack of taste. Almost metallic at times. It has helped me wanting to snack a lot, and can eat some of an item, then lose interest in after the craving is satisfied. If it weren’t for the Contrave coupon on-line for this medication, I would not be able to take it. But, I have reached a point with my weight that I asked my physician to put me on this medication. At this moment, it is worth the cost. Hopefully, the price will come down where it is more affordable.

Started contrave mid Feb 2018 at 218lbs, and I’m 5’2″. History of PCOS and Thyroid issues but my thyroid levels aren’t low enough for the doctor to put me on meds. So far I’ve dropped 8lbs and I feel good and I’m going for more. Side effects: some nausea in the first few days, hot sweats the first two weeks with increased dosage, but only two or three days after the dosage increased and they stopped. I do have ringing in my ears but it isn’t all the time. Feels like I need to keep moving and when I finally get home I am ready for bed and asleep earlier than I have been. I do get a little headache but it goes away. I take two in the morning around 7am with a yogurt and some fruit and then I take two around 2pm-3pm after I eat lunch and have noticed that as long as I eat while taking it I haven’t had any issues. I do drink much more water.

I’ve been on Contrave for almost 2 weeks and I don’t know if I can handle the side effects. I am obese, 5’7” & 270lbs with Type 2 diabetes. I desperately want to lose weight but the nausea feeling is almost unbearable.
Gyspy L.
The nausea can be overwhelming. I drink a lot of iced tea, and I’ve also noticed that the Contrave does not like caffefine. The more of that I drink, the nausea is worse. Ginger ale is definitely a plus, especially early in the am.

I started Contrave February 2017. I lost 30 lbs. by September. Went on vacation and see sawed back and forth with 2-3 lbs. thru the month of September. I have been on a plateau since then. Gain 2, loose 1, gain 1, loose 2. At first I wasn’t hungry and all cravings stopped. Now, I get very hungry and I am again craving carbs. Anyone else experience this? As far as side affects, I have had dry mouth and some constipation. I can deal with that. I want to loose another 10-15 lbs. but am concerned that Contrave is no longer working for me and am afraid that once I stop taking it, I will just go right back where I was. I have been walking (outside) every day now for 2 years. Only down pours keep me from walking my 2 miles per day and 3-4 on the weekends. Has anyone else hit a plateau? How did you break it?

After hearing so much about Contrave I asked my PMD about it. We researched it together and thought this would be a good thing. He had no problems in prescribing medications. I have no issues with chronic pain and take nothing more than multi-vitamins and HTN medication. I started the medication as prescribed. When I reached the 2 tabs twice a day within 2 days I started experiencing severe muscle pain in my scapula area radiating into my arm. I had no injuries noted to area. I treated with heat, ice and NSAID’s. My pain only kept getting worse. After 2 weeks I finally put together that the pain started after reaching max dosage for medication. A week later I am still weaning myself off of the medication, and my pain is improving. A doctor I work with who is also a pharmacist tells me that not only does it block the pain medications (that I don’t take) but also blocks my “Natural” opioid receptors that my body produces on its own. I have taken 20 steps backwards from starting this drug instead of 20 steps forward. I have been unable to go to the gym on a regular basis like I was doing. It takes everything out of me to even get thru the day at work due to the pain. Over the past week since weaning off I am getting much better but would never recommend anyone to take this drug. I will just have to remain a fat girl.

I am a 52 year old female at 5’10 236 lbs. I started this medication in mid Nov. lost 11 lbs. in two weeks, stopped smoking & drinking completely. I just have no urge for either. Feb. constant ringing in my ears, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, headaches and dizziness, not to mention dehydration and constipation. I’m done!
I have not lost any more weight and in fact have gained 3 lbs back. Severe sugar cravings and I have never been big on sweets. I am also craving carbs like mad! My doctor changed my antidepressant at the same time to Trintellix which has some of the same side effects and is supposed to work well with Contrave. I only take two Contrave in the am. Two days ago I bumped it up to 4 to see how it did. The worst headache and dizziness yet. I can’t function like this! I am going to stop and i just filled another prescription at 99.00 a pop. I can honestly say I have never paid so much to feel so bad. Something is wrong with this picture.

I was incredibly nervous about starting this. Quick backstory- I’m 5 foot and have always carried just a little too much weight. I played rugby in college so kept it down, taught school weight went back up, had kids a little more up, started playing tennis 4 days a week weight went down. So obviously for me I know exercise is vital for keeping my weight manageable and feeling good. When I say “good weight” for me, I’m happy in a size 12 pant and large top. I’m 45 and have had a complete knee replacement, back surgery twice and my whole foot redone. (Thanks rugby). I just want to be healthy enough to keep up with my family that golfs, plays tennis and camps.
My mom had serious health issues and I was her primary caretaker from 12/25/16 to 12/4/17. It was a year of incredible stress, weeks in hospitals and rehab facilities. I would not change any of this for the world because my mom was by best friend. However it took its toll on my physically. After she passed I looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize myself. A year in yoga pants was not good.
I took stock in what was going on and realized I had started stress eating in the hospital. Nothing huge but it added up. Then I started waking up in the middle of the damn night to eat- that was not good. I also completely stopped exercising. I started wearing a fitness tracker when they hit the market and was obsessed with my 10,000 a day steps. If I took 500 steps a day while caring for my mom it was good. I had turned into a human turtle. Oh and another thing I picked up during that time- binge smoking and binge drinking! I had been a “I only smoke when I drink and that’s once a weekend” person for years. Awful I know. But when mom got sick I was puffing away. I also was drinking way more than I usually did, to escape the situation. So with all these lovely things in mind, I headed to the doctor for a chat.
I had tried diet pills before and know they are not the answer. However, I’m a big believer in if something helps to jumpstart healthy habits than go for it. My doctor was a bit concerned about starting me on this because I take tramadol twice a day for knee pain. We discussed it and decided to proceed with caution. I started last week and…
I feel really good.
The first day was not good and neither was day 2. My husband was going to toss them but I said let’s give it another day. So I did. And felt fine. No nasuea, no tiredness, nothing. Am I still hungry? Kinda yea. But am I snacking? No. And no night eating at all. But here is best part- I stopped smoking. My kids and husband are in shock. I’ve wanted to quit for years and I know my family hated it but didn’t pressure me. I lost my dad and brother to cancer so I know how horrible it was. I also have no urge to drink. Huh.
Is there a downside? There always is. Nothing is this easy. It does interact with my tramadol rendering it not as effective. Knee pain is a constant for me but I will manage it. I also am having trouble sleeping, lots of white nights and when I do sleep super vivid dreams. Sometimes good sometimes bad. Will this continue to be this effective? God I hope so. I’ve already signed back up at the Y, the dog park and am going camping with my daughter next weekend. I didn’t weigh myself before I started and am so mad I didn’t. I walked into the kitchen this morning and my husband said “hey lady, you have someone else’s clothes on”. I’m thinking I’m down a good 4 pounds which makes a big difference in the way I look because my weight sticks to my face first and the ridge above my butt second. Not pretty.
So there is my story so far with contrave. I know so many people react differently because we all are different. I wanted to put my two cents in in case anyone was on the fence. At the end of the day for me, being a healthy weight let’s me spend more time with my family, and that’s the most important thing in the world.
Good luck everyone.

I am a 43 yr old. I had my thyroid radiated in 2013. Since then I am unable to lose weight. I have no other health problems. I started these pills 1 month ago. They have stopped all cravings and any bloating I get. I’m hardly ever hungry. I feel better, as for losing weight, not sure. Probably won’t continue after the second month. I have not had any of those side effects.

I began taking Contrave 9 months ago. The first few weeks were challenging with some nausea, sleepiness and foggy brain, but it all passed by the the end of month 1. And I have never felt better. I am a 58 year old woman with a 20 year history of hypothyroidism. This always made me susceptible to weight gain and very difficult to lose weight. My journey with Contrave is slow and steady. I’ve lost 20 pounds in 9 months and have 10 more to go. I have gone from a size 12/14 to 8/10. I even just went through Christmas without binging. Enjoying myself, having a little taste of everything I love, but that’s it. It’s so nice to know didn’t set myself back during the season. H

Has anyone developed a rash with contravene? I did great first 3 weeks, now I have a bad rash over body, that itches.

This could be a coincidence but I started taking Contrave to help with weight gain in November 2017. About 2 weeks into it I noticed skin rashes on my arms just like the other post. Thinking it was a reaction to pine trees since I was putting up Christmas tree lighting outside, I went to an urgent care facility for treatment of what they believed to be poison ivy or oak. I was prescribed medication for this. Since I didn’t want to interact medications with one another I stopped taking the Contrave medication. Three weeks later and my skin was getting worst.
Spread to my legs, back, chest and still on my arms but full arm length. I went to see a Dermatologist who said I didn’t have poison ivy or oak I have psoriasis. I said what? She said something happened to my immune system that messed up my blood cells. Asked if I was sick recently, high fever, whatever I could think might have caused this. I didn’t mention Contrave because it wasn’t really on my mind. All blood work came back that I didn’t have any other infection that would have caused this the psoriasis. Normally a strep infection may cause this or high fever.
Something jacked me up and I am thinking it may have been the Contrave the more I think about it. My skin is a total mess from my neck down. I itch, have welts all over my body and currently on medication, creams, and now doing light therapy to try and get rid of this. I have never had psoriasis before and it isn’t something I wish on anyone. It is very difficult for me to deal with at this time. I suggest anyone experiencing this reaction to go have yourself checked out by a dermatologist and do provide me any feedback you have receive. I am not very happy if this drug caused my issue but who really knows. I would like to know if others are experiencing this type of rash and if they have had confirmed with a skin doctor that it is psoriasis.

A 55-year-old woman was transferred to our tertiary medical center from a community hospital for possible Stevens-Johnson syndrome 3 weeks after initiation of bupropion/naltrexone. The patient was admitted to the burn unit for wound treatment and hydration. She received intravenous cyclosporine during the admission that resulted in acute kidney injury and the therapy was discontinued. The skin biopsy ruled out Stevens-Johnson syndrome and was more consistent with generalized pustular psoriasis. After discharge, the patient followed up with her dermatologist. She was diagnosed with acute generalized and erythrodermic psoriasis and the patient was restarted on cyclosporine 100 mg twice a day. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS?: Few case reports of bupropion-induced generalized pustular psoriasis and erythrodermic psoriasis in patients with a history of psoriasis have been reported. To our knowledge, acute generalized erythrodermic pustular psoriasis associated with bupropion/naltrexone has not been reported in a patient without history of psoriasis. Due to increases in obesity and increases in prescribing of bupropion/naltrexone SR, health care providers should be aware of this possible severe adverse reaction.

I have just been prescribed this medication and have not taken one dose yet. What flips me out…is how it affects each one of you so differently. That’s insane! The only pattern I can see so far is where you started in the beginning. The true binge addiction driven eaters seem to fare better on this drug experiencing fewer side effects than those that only need to lose weight. But, maybe that’s just my optimistic expectation!

I am surprised at any negative results. I have been on Contrave for about a year. I exercise and eat pretty good. I have lost about 60 pds. For me, it wasn’t specifically for weight loss. I wanted to take the anti-depressant, and contrave works on cravings. I had found my craving for wine was a little too much. I can’t stand the taste of any alcohol now. I don’t take 2 in the am or 3 at night. I take 4 a day. Sometimes, none. But never go more than a day. I also take stool softeners to help with the constipation. I think it is wonderful to curb cravings. Any cravings.

I have been on Contrave for 4 months and have lost 30 pounds. I have had a few side affects, constipation, headaches which went away after a couple weeks and vivid dreams which I already had before the medication. Recently I have noticed that my blood pressure has been high. Was wondering if anyone else started having problems with their blood pressure after taking it for several months.

I have been on Contrave since 10/05/2017. I haven’t noticed a difference in my apatite at all and because of this I haven’t lost one pound. I have developed a sever case of constipation. This is not what I was looking for,

I have been taking contrave for a couple of months with 30 pounds weight loss. But, I’m having high blood pressure problems. I just stopped the medication a few days ago. Pressure still high. Hopefully it’ll get back to normal. Does anyone know how long that will take or will I ever have a normal pressure again?

OK, I have been on Contrave for 3 weeks………..I am done. I have back issues which surgery is a last resort. I also need to have a knee replacement but have not had much pain before starting this medication. I take 1 Norco at night so I can rest. I have been unable to sleep, in extreme pain, jittery and just feel like poop! I have not been feeling hungry but it just isn’t worth the pain and sleepless nights.

Yes, I can relate I’m 68 female I was taking Contrave for close to 90 days. Couldn’t sleep due to severe leg and foot pain muscle ache so bad I’d take very hot baths in the middle of the night to get relief also had to take RX pain pills to TRY and get sleep.. Just terrible..Stopped taking Contrave got relief after four days… some foot cramping still but better. Contrave helped with sugar and salt craving. Lost only four pounds.

I have been on Contrave for about 4 weeks and this drug has been so beneficial; it has improved my quality of life by a lot. Upon taking it, I noticed how much happier I was and realized that I had really been suffering from depression and social anxiety which then led to a lot of binge eating and overeating. I think Contrave can help fix some of the chemical imbalances in the brain that affect how you eat and how your brain processes rewards. Food addictions can be similar to drug addictions. Contrave helps so you can live a life where food doesn’t control you. I felt like it helped fix some of the brain messaging so that I could actually hear the real hunger and satiety cues in my body.
I think Contrave is beneficial for a very specific group of people with weight issues. This isn’t a magic pill where you just lose weight, but rather it levels the playing field so that you can lose weight like everyone else…through exercise and a good diet. From my experience, I believe this is for people who have issues with emotional eating, disordered eating (binging and OCD focused on weight loss), food addictions, depression and anxiety. From a woman, who also has PCOS and a lifelong struggle with weight loss, this drug has been beneficial.
Side effects: yes, I experienced headaches, dizziness, nightmares, higher blood pressure, trouble sleeping and a little nausea. These usually only lasted a few days when you increase the dosage (as you have to build up to the full dosage). The side effects weren’t that bad and the benefits outweighed the common side effects for me.
Again, I don’t think this drug is for everyone but it has been very beneficial for me and I think it can help the people who need it.

I would get headaches the 1st week but they went away after a week. My appetite was the same as before I started taking the pills. But now I’m in the middle of my 4th week and feeling very nauseous. The thought of food makes my nausea worse . My mouth is also dry, but it could be because I don’t want to drink water as it makes me nauseous too. I don’t know if I should continue…

I’ve been taking Contrave for 2 & a half months. It was prescribed to me by an endocrinologist as part of a local hospital’s diabetes weight-loss program. My blood work showed that I was just under the line of being “pre-diabetic,” and I have hypertension. I am a 54 yr. old women. My BMI was 34, putting me at the top range of Obesity type I. I was a little afraid of the side effects but the risks of obesity outweighed them, in my opinion. I am also talking Metformin.
I have lost a little more than 16 lbs. I am not binge eating any more. Nor binge drinking. I have not had any GI issues. I feel healthier now, but still have a way to go. My concern is maintenance once I get to a healthy weight. I’ve lost 50 lbs. three times in my life and have always gained it back, and more. Perhaps, this is a drug for people like me, yet I do not like altering my blood chemistry. I plan to work with my regular physician now because I suspect the diabetics center is a cash cow, no pun intended, for the hospital. I was billed over $200. for 15 min. with the endocrinologist. I already forked out $400 for the program.
I am not sure how long I should stay on Contrave but I know I should be under a doctor’s care. I trust my GP much more than a hospital, which is after all, a big business with an intimate relationship with the pharmaceutical industry. I’m going to stay on it for a while longer, but I don’t know how long I should. I will be discussing this with my doctor very soon.

This pill sounds like a recipe for suicide. Reminds me of the “Acomplia” scandal in which people killed themselves during clinical trials of the weight loss drug.
Blocking the brain’s pleasure receptors can trigger SERIOUS mental problems. Acomplia blocks cannabinoid receptors while Naltrexone blocks opioid receptors–same basic concept. The result of both is gut-wrenching nausea, low mood & loss of interest in not just food but LIFE.
Bupropion is also a nasty drug. It put me in the ER with uncontrollable muscle jerking the ER staff referred to as “pseudo-Parkinsonism”. It was the only antidepressant that caused a serious health issue for me (and I’ve tried them all). It’s definitely not some benign med that agrees with everyone.
Honestly, you’d be better off taking a stimulant to jump-start your weight loss if you wanna go the pharmaceutical route (which should be tried before the surgical route IMO).

I’m at the end of my second week (1 pill in the am and 1 in the pm). I don’t think I’m going to continue much longer maybe one more week. I seem to be craving more sweets than I was before I started taking the pills. The side effect that is bothering me the most is fatigue. I’m exhausted to the point where I’m falling asleep at my desk at work. I’ve also noticed that the ringing in my ears has gotten much worse.

I went to my doctor with symptoms of depression. Since I have type 2 diabetes and am technically obese, she prescribed Contrave. I am in the middle of week 4 and have no side effects save for vivid dreams, which are kinda cool. I lost 7 pounds the first week on the initial 1 pill dosage and have lost a total of 12 pounds all together. I am also no longer depressed. So far I’m a fan!

This medication was prescribed by my endocrinologist over 3 weeks ago. I noticed reduced cravings and better mood. I just started week two on Contrave with unpleasant side effects. Significant nausea and headaches began immediately followed by diarrhea. I have brain fog, difficulty focusing on work, and occasional cold sweats with shivers.
I’ve lost 2 lbs, which is good for week one, but am thinking of quiting after the fourth week… If I make it that far. If the side effects go away and I lose more weight then it will be worth the $100/month for the medication. Right now I’m sort of regretting not seeing this website and comments sooner.

My doctor prescribed Contrave as an aid to weight loss due to the fact that I have type 2 diabetes. I have gone through so much and did not realize the connection at first. I had to resign from a job that I loved because I was always in the bathroom with diarrhea. I was always crying and I was filled with anxiety all the time. These are characteristics that do not describe my personality. I became depressed and withdrawn and had thoughts of suicide all the time. I knew I had to stop taking Contrave when I began cutting myself again. Yes I lost weight but I was miserable. When I stopped taking it, my mind was clear and I became focused again.. Anybody taking this or any drug need to beware and pay close attention to your body and what its telling you.

Thank you, I have been having the same symptoms. I was on Wellbutrin alone and my doc suggested Contrave for the added benefit of losing weight.
I was great on the Wellbutrin alone, active, happy, energetic focused and had the suppression of appetite that was minor but effective. The minute I went on Contrave my anxiety rose, my sadness appeared again, and just want to cry all the time and nausea was all the time. I have lost weight but I am with you, not worth it.

Contrave is literally changing my life. I’m 5’2″, 56 years old, have hypothyroidism, and made the decision to start this drug so that I could get weight of my knee and wait a few years for knee replacement. I’ve tried every diet out there and never had any significant weight loss but, since starting Contrave, I’ve lost 26 lbs (in 3 months). Weight loss hasn’t been the only benefit. The Wellbutrin in this drug has allowed me to gradually stop taking Paxil and I feel great! I feel better emotionally than I have in a long time. I’m able to make better decisions about what to eat, and really don’t feel that I’m dieting. My husband was so impressed that he is now on it as well.
Now don’t get me wrong. There are some side effects. I have to make sure that I don’t take it on an empty stomach or it can cause nausea. I have REALLY vivid dreams, but they’re more ridiculous than frightening. The worst symptom is constipation but, I’ve been able to mitigate that with a stool softener, so that not really problematic either.
All-in-all, the decision to go on this was the best I’ve made in a long time.

I have been on Contrave 3 months and have lost 13 pounds. The biggest change I have noticed is I no longer crave sweets. Food is not constantly on my mind like it was before. I do get nauseous but only when I drink coffee or eat greasy food which I figure neither one is good for me anyway. I also have constipation but extra fiber helps with that. I’ve noticed when I don’t exercise or expend enough energy, I do feel anxious and cranky. But when I am exercising, which my doctor wants me to do anyway, I feel great. Contrave is not a miracle pill that magically melts the fat away but if you are motivated to make a lifestyle change, it will help.

Hi. I’ve struggled with gaining weight all my life. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos year ago, and I am insulin resistant. But my reason for trying Contrave is not to lose weight.
2 years ago I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis. Paralyzed stomach. It doesn’t contract and push the food I eat out and into my small intestine (has to do with a damaged vegus nerve. There is no cure. I can only manage the symptoms. There is a drug for this condition (Reglan) but the risks that come with it terrify me. Before I was diagnosed with this, I didn’t eat sugar. I ate more along the lines of the Paleo diet. But people with GP do not digest fiber well.
We don’t digest fats well. Some GP patients have to use a gastric food to receive nourishment. Some vomit daily. Thankfully, I’m not to that point. GP patients like me are allowed to eat anything processed. Vegetables must be peeled and cooked. I cannot eat salads anymore. I can have white bread, white rice, white crackers, ice cream, creamed soups, etc. We are supposed to eat 6-8 small meals spaced out in the day, but I’m not very good at that.
This diet is SO empty of nutrients, and still I am hungry even after I’ve eaten. The lack of fiber and fats leaves nothing to satiate. It leaves my body craving the foods I can’t have, and because I can’t have them, I try to satisfy the craving with what I can have and it never happens.
It’s a vicious circle. If I miss a “meal”, or two for whatever reason…if I’m out running errands and I get held up, by the time I get home, I have NO control. As a matter of fact, I am ravenous. “GIVE ME FOOD. GIVE IT TO ME NOW!” Its like a primal drive to thrive, over which I have no control. My food takes 4 hours to digest while yours takes aprox. 90 min.
It sits in my stomach, and stomach acid gets backed up into my esophagus, causing erosion and burning. So I am also on the largest dose of proton pump inhibitors, which keeps me from absorbing the nutrients I do get, because I can’t break them down. So I also take enzymes, which do help some.
I just don’t have any other choice but to put up with Contrave’s side effects (although I am praying they subside after some time on it. You see, my quality of life has not been so great anyway. When I eat too much at one sitting, I have severe symptoms that, so far, trump the ill effects of Contrave. Taking Contrave has somewhat lessened my obsession with food, and the stress over how I can fit the most nutrients into one meal, lamenting what I can’t have. I haven’t lost any weight, but I have better control so I’m not having the ill effects of GP (I’m not gaining weight either).
With GP, I live with nausea daily…which along with pain in my joints, deters me from attempting to get exercise. GP causes stomach pain, excessive bloating, excessive belching, burning in my throat, down into my stomach if I eat more than my stomach can handle. If I just didn’t need food to live, I’d feel great! I’m grateful to my merciful God for Contrave, even if I have to put up with nausea, at least I’m not suffering with all those other effects of GP.
I’ve read all your reviews. I pray you all find your individual answers, so you might lay hold of the best of health. Blessings…

Sherry Honey! I don’t have your ailments nor your courage… but I DO have the ability to pray for a complete healing for you! SO–I DID! I have already prayed the blood of Jesus over you; that your vegus nerve not only be repaired–but REPLACED, by the One who created it! You closed your post with “blessings…”. I’ll assume you believe in Christ, and His promises that apply TO YOU! Use the courage you already have to stand before HIM, asking for that which He has promised–HEALING! I lost 7 lbs in 2 weeks. Contrave greatly reduced my appetite. In spite of the weight loss, I am quitting the medication as I have experienced depression, insomnia, and irritability. The weight loss is great, but the side effects aren’t worth it to me. Very disappointed and sorry I put myself through this. Back to the portion control and calorie counting, I guess.

On Contrave for 2 months. was 5’10” and 230 lbs. After two months on Contrave I’m down to 195 lbs. Tinnitus is the resulting side effect that I’m learning to live with because I’ve lived my life diagnosed with ADHD and OCD. It turns out that the medication has taken away 90% of my idiosyncrasies associated with them. I’ve also discovered that I now have empathy, where as before it was non-existent. I’m sort of coming to the conclusion that maybe I’d been misdiagnosed and have some type of mania that the two medications address in addition to my not wanting to eat compulsively.
I have a meeting with doctor to discuss to see if we can re-look at medications. However the new me is worth the tinnitus, because while being a genius, I was a real Richard.

I’m finishing my second week of taking Contrave and have lost a total of 8.6 pounds. I have not had the side effects of nausea and gastro issues. The only thing I have noticed is that I need to clear my throat a lot. I sound like a long time smoker but I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life! My appetite is definitely less now plus my desire to overeat is diminished quite considerably. It’s almost like Contrave has given me my willpower back. I can now say “no” to things that are bad choices. I’m excited to start taking the higher dosage. This week I start two pills in the AM and one at night.

While it really works to lose weight and keep it off , there are so many side effects that go with it.I have been on it for 1 year. I went thru having nausea everyday for the first few months. The worse side effect was that my crazy moods and being mean and snappy and terrible headaches.
I started having really thin hair which i have never been faced vwith i have always had really thIck hair. It doesn’t say anything about hair loss on the pamphlet that comes with it. I have read several articles that others have had the same thing. I am taking my self off it slowly just one a day now.I do walk on my treadmill once a day. While it works it also does things to your thought process. I’d rather be nice and sensitive instead of thin. Good Luck taking it.

Hi Debbie – i am curious to know how you did coming off of the contrive? I was on the max dose (2 pills in am, 2 pills in pm) for about a year. I decided it was time to come off of it and my endocrinologist cut my dose in half, to one pill in the am and one pill in the pm. It has been agonizing. I have had mood swings, am irritable, crying spells, generalized anxiety regularly, feelings of depression, etc.
My endo actually told me there is no research of these side effects when coming off on contrave. I work in a hospital and have great connections with our psychiatrists. I asked them about it and they felt that was way too quick of a taper. That i should go back to the full dose and when i feel stable, begin taking one pill out per week. It would be a much more manageable decrease for my brain overall.
I really just want it out of my system completely but am scared to just stop it completely given how i have felt cutting it in half. Can you tell me how your experience has been coming off of it so slowly?

True! Was so excited to use it but in my 3rd week, I started feeling strange. Vertigo, shaking, headaches and feeling of drowning while sleeping. Called my doctor and she said, just limit the dosage first before quitting cold turkey.
Today, I took one pill and so far the headache is tolerable. I don’t feel like I lost any weight at this moment. Yes, I paid for my medication because the insurance won’t cover it. Now, I feel like a fool doing this.

I am 75 and have struggled with my weight since I was young..added to that is the fact that I had my thyroid removed at 22. I am in my sixth week of Contrave and have lost 16 lbs. yes Ihave experienced some nausea..but I found if I take the pills after breakfast and after dinner it is pretty minimal. When I consider the terrible health risks due to obesity it doesn’t seem like a bad trade off. My blood pressure is lowering, I think because of the weight loss. I definitely do not eat as much as I did..I had a problem with portion control, but know I just eat less than half of what I usually eat and have no cravings.

I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and have been on Contrave since December 2015. Initially I lost about 15 lbs but, several of the unbenContrave it because of it containing Wellbutrin, which was forced upon me by another doctor a couple of years before I was finally diagnosed with Thyroid disease. Wellbutrin made me more irratible, tired, anxious and depressed with occasional angry outbursts.
I have heard from the Hashimoto’s 411 community on Facebook that the other ingredient in Contrave, Naltrexone can help with weight issues for Thyroid patients if it is taken in low doses. Suggested doses are 1.5 mg to 4 mg.
It is May 2017 and I have gained all but 5 lbs back after starting Contrave. I have recently been experiencing severe painful ringing in my ears, irritability, anxiety, tiredness, lethargy, pronounced brain fog and am craving salty carbs almost obsessively.
I am coming off this collosal waste of time. As I slowly climb back up to the unhealthy weight once again. I WILL NEVER TAKE WELLBUTRIN AGAIN!!!

I started Contrave yesterday. Within 3 hours I was so nauseated I could not function. I was nauseated for the next 20 hours. I am now feeling weak and a bit queasy.
I was going to contact my doctor, but after reading these comments, I think I have just wasted over $100.00. The sight of the bottle makes me think how incredibly sick I was. There is no way I want to feel that nauseated again.
The results I have read about are not more significant than other weight loss pills without the cost and dramatic side effects. I am done with Contrave. I am disappointed because I had such high hopes.

I have taken Contrave for 3 month and went through extreme nausea, dry mouth, constipation, not to mention the very high cost of it. I am taking myself off of it. I only lost about 12 pounds in 3 months. I do not feel that is very good compared to all the nonsense that goes with it. I still have a month a half left that will do me no good. I am very disappointed as I really wanted to lose 30 pound but only got to 12. Went to ER today. Don’t know if Contrave has any bearing on my medical findings but I was sent home with an oxygen tank because when I sleep or get idle my oxygen goes way down. So I am done with it and back to Weight Watchers

I started taking contravene about 3 months ago . I found it finally started to control my hunger but my severe constipation and stomach pains have me worried to take any more. My cravings have slowed but I have not seen any major weight loss. I do feel under control with my cravings though. But again the stomach problems has me thinking I should stop

I had sever constipation when I first started taking the drug. I found that taking Miralax every day helped a lot. The stomach pains went away once I became regular again. I didn’t loose weight very fast like some others, about 2 to 4 pounds a month. (Of course, my husband is a saboteur. He would routinely suggest we go out to eat at all you can eat places). I had little self control even taking Contrave, so it was hard.

I’ve been on Contrave for 2 months now and have lost 30 lbs. I experienced some mild headaches and sleeplessness in the first couple of weeks, but no longer have them. While on Contrave I find it easy to stick to a 1400-1500 daily caloric intake, and I have 0 cravings for sweets. I even had to cut back on sweeteners in my tea because it tasted too sweet. I also do yoga regularly and am training for the Avon 39, so I’m much more active than before.
As for constipation, yes I have some. However, I find that taking fiber daily helps and the only time I get stomach cramps is when I eat something greasy. I can usually tell when I’m backed up since my weight goes up that day instead of down.
For me, so far, this is exactly what I need. I’m hoping that after being on it for a while my body will adjust to not eating sweets and greasy foods and I won’t need it anymore… but only time will tell.

I took contrave in 2016 for about a month. I got up to two in the morning and two at evening. At that point I started getting very weepy and it was hard to stop being weepy. Given I was experiencing a death in the family, my cat almost dying, and my hubby having possibly fatal health issues. I ultimately stopped though because even if I was dealing with hardships, I’m not typically a person that is so weepy to the point I couldn’t stop. Plus I experienced anxiety so much it made me doubt myself with everything I did. I lost about 15 pounds in a month, but I’d rather keep those 15 pounds and not go through that hell of side effects. Bottom line is, you are putting drugs in your system that you really don’t need. I would say to someone thinking about taking it, don’t, it’s not worth messing up your mental health or digestive health. Let’s do it the good old fashion way, good food choice and exercises. A good thought to remember, it didn’t get put on over night and it won’t come off over night. One day at a time my lovelies. If you slip up, don’t stop, let the next thing you put in your mouth be healthy.

I have been on Contrave going into my fourth week, and I am seriously considering stopping. I have been trying to deal with the side effects until I see my doctor in a few days, but I have nausea, feeling like motion sickness (all morning long) and recently have had ringing in my ears, which I now see is a side effect of Contrave. The funny thing is I feel like I have to keep eating to keep from having the nausea. So I am eating more all morning long (crackers, etc) to help with the nausea. I also have a funny taste in my mouth. The symptoms usually last all morning long and then seem to go away. But I have been having the nausea at night when I go to bed also, although not as bad as in the morning.
This is my second time trying it. I had to quit the first time, after being on it 3 weeks, because I was having the nausea problem, constipation and jitters. As soon as I got off it I felt better. I don’t think Contrave is the answer for me.

Seeing doctor tomorrow. Lost 10 pounds in 6 weeks. Not that great. Lost the desire to eat and would quit eating after eating only 1/2 what I put on plate. Thought this is great. Then… Got so constipated thought I would have to go to hospital. Dry mouth is horrible. Drinking water through the night. Have been having trouble sleeping and gosh awful dreams. Last but not least have gotten thrush which I had just gotten over weeks before starting Contrave. Think I need to quit before something really goes bad.

My doctor put me on this about 4 months ago. I am sitting at my desk feeling sea sick. I want to just lay down. My drive is down. I was a borderline high blood pressure person. For 3 months I have had high blood pressure and my doctor wants me to begin taking meds for that. I am taking myself off of this before I lose my mind.

I started Contrave a six weeks ago. I love the results. I started at 150 and am now 139. My weight loss has been steady a lb every couple of days. I have increased my exercise by swimming 20-30 minutes 4-5 times a week. The reason I love Contrave is that there is no jitteriness like on other diet pills. As a matter of fact, I am calmer and happier than ever before. I have never taken anything like Wellbutrin, but it’s great.
This medication has definitely given me control over my eating. I no longer eat after dinner. I am very careful and aware of what I am eating. It helps me make good choices.
The weirdest thing about the Contrave, and perhaps why I’ve lost so much weight, is that it took away my desire to drink wine. I was a white wine 3 glass per night gal, and all of a sudden I had no interest in it. I think decreasing my sugar intake enormously has put my body into a weight loss mode. Now I am having some wine, but I find myself leaving some in the glass! That was never me.
And here is the really strange part, I have not gone beyond one pill in the morning and one at night. I am not telling others to do this, but as long as the low doseage is working, I don’t see the need to increase. Perhaps in the future I will. I did have extremely dry mouth the first two weeks, and an occasional headache, but those symptoms are gone. Occasionally if I eat something heavy I feel very slightly nauseated but nowhere to the point of thinking I’m going to throw up, but rather like I over ate. Definitely eating smaller portions now. So now I am a very smiley person due to the Wellbutrin part and my thinner waist.
It is expensive, but totally worth it to me because it is a very calm way to lose weight, and I’ve never tried anything like this. Highly recommend, however, everyone is different. This is just my experience that I wanted to pass on . I am a 64 year old female
UPDATE: I am going down to one pill a day this week and then probably off. The Digestive issues have caught up with me. The excessive gas I could handle, but then the stomach cramps and now diahrea right after I eat something. It was a great run up until now. Down to 138.6. Yay. Now the real work begins. Can I keep it off?

I recently took myself off contrave. I began having vertigo and extreme aggitation. I have been off contrave for a week and I am still suffering with dizziness and sensitivity with my eyes. I am really disappointed… Guess I will have to continue with the good ol eat right and exercise routine.

I have been on Contrave for 6 days and I am planning to stop taking it today. I found that I was anxious, depressed. I felt like I was going to cry. I am not a depressed person nor have I ever had anxiety attacks. I seem to get stuck on thoughts that bother me and can’t get over the pain or sadness attached to them. I also feel like it has decreased my ambition. I have to force myself to do things that I would normally do without a problem.

Been so sick on this drug it really has been intolerable. Nausea sea sickness feelings stomach distress and gi issues. This is my second go around on this merry go round with the same result both times. I am shocked they dispense this drug without sufficiently warning of the severity of the side effects. I had such high hopes for this drug. Feeling let down.

Did you only take this for 5 months then stopped? Also, did you have to step down in the dosage like how you started taking it?

Hi I just took myself off of Contrave. I gave it a shot for over two months. The first two weeks was adjusting and I would have headaches from time to time that mimicked like a sinus headache and migraine headache. I also experienced extreme agitation and short temper when taken twice a day. I’m still trying to deal with the irregular heartbeat from Contrave. I do not recommend on a personal note. I would drink battery acid before I would go through that again to lose 20lbs.

I’ve been on contrave for about a week because my Dr. said according to the body mass index chart I’m obese(at 175) and I don’t feel anything different as far as craving food. I still do. The first week headache constantly, dry cotton mouth. I’m use to having a bowel movements 3 times a day, now it’s barely one a day. Going to the bathroom now is depressing. Not sure if I want to continue to take this but my insurance doesn’t cover and I will be out of $92. By next week I will have made my mind up about this. It’s not for everyone.

I have been on Contrave for 2 weeks now. I am 5’10 and was 218 when I talked to my doctor. I had already lost 90 pounds on Weight Watchers and still follow that eating program. Since I was at a plateau for the last several months she thought this could help get me losing weight again. The first week was wonderful, no side effects, felt great, good energy. This second week is killing me, the nausea hits me about 10am (I take the first pill at 6am) It gets so bad I almost can’t function for an hour or two, and if you have a real job that isn’t a great thing to deal with because you can’t just go “sleep it off”. Also the second week I started having sensitivity to light (to computer monitors and phone screens) and the headaches are non-stop all day long. While I have lost 11 pounds in this short time, and thinking “I would do anything to just get to 195 pounds” I just don’t think this is worth feeling so terrible on a daily basis. There is NO WAY I am increasing the dose from 1 in the am and 1 in the pm, I can’t even imagine what the 2 and 2 dosage would make me feel like. I plan on going back to 1 in the am and not taking the nightly dose and see if that makes the nausea and headaches go away, if not I will stop taking the medication altogether even though it has helped me lose a nice amount of weight in such a short time. Hopefully with spring/summer I’ll be able to amp up my workouts and get to that goal without the medication.

I started Contrave last summer. I initially felt great and wasn’t hungry. Two weeks in I became very sick and was hospitalized for dehydration. I don’t know if I had food poisoning or if it was from the medication. I had panic attacks for the first time in my life (I’m 47). As I said, not sure if it was from the medication, but I would Not risk it:(

I started taking Contrave in August 2015 after I had rapidly packed on 60 lbs in three months time due to two different medications. I would like to point out that I was on those medications for a very short period of time because they were causing more side effects than weight gain. I started at 160 pounds and ended up weighing 220 pounds. That was a lot of weight to gain within three months.
Anyhow, I went to my physician and requested a diet pill and she prescribed it to me. From August 2015 to December 2015 I lost all of the 60 pounds I had gained. Contrave is a godsend. While I was taking it I was exercising four times a week, and the medication reduced my appetite tremendously but it did not make me nauseated. The only side effect I experience is that my bowel movements went from 2 to 3 times a day to one time a day. The medication was wonderful for me!

I have a 100lbs to lose and I have been on Contrave for 6 weeks. No side effects except raised blood pressure. After first 4 weeks no weight loss, in fact I gained 20 lbs. Doctor, of course, got angry with me and started attacking saying obviously I am not trying.
Started to wean myself off it and working my way back down to not taking it. Blood pressure has been steadily going up and ringing in the ears has started. So, I am not a success story and the $90 a month is more than I can afford especially more discouraged with terrible results.

Based on height, weight, and BMI I would be considered obese although I don’t feel like I am. I definitely look the part, though. Started Contrave about a month ago. Prescribed dose was 1 tablet in the AM; 1 tablet in the PM. After being so sleepy I could barely hold my eyes open after taking the morning dose, I stopped the morning dose and only take the 1 tablet at night. I have experienced constipation and have a dry mouth that feels like I’ve been walking in the desert for days. I’ve been drinking a lot of water but it never gets rid of the dry mouth or feeling of dehydration.
Contrave has kick-started my weight loss, though. Because my insurance does not cover this medication and it’s over $100/mo., I will finish this round and then see if I can continue with my changed behaviour and increased exercise without having my mind altered to have enough oomph to do anything. Originally did just want Contrave to try to kick-start things. Before starting Contrave, I had absolutely NO energy and was a couch potato. I was in a bit of a catch-22: I knew that if I could start walking/exercising I would feel better and more energetic, but always felt so drained I couldn’t get to the point of doing the walking/exercise. While Contrave has not helped with the energy, it has seemed to help me kick-start myself.
I definitely plan to stop taking it once I’ve used it up and see how things go. Since I’m already on Cymbalta (for anxiety/depression) I don’t really want to continue a drug that will alter brain chemicals. I’ve tried to come off Cymbalta (stepped approach) but I get so nauseatingly dizzy I can’t stand it. Hopefully when I stop taking Contrave, I won’t experience the same thing (the Welbutrin). Sorry for the dissertation. Long and short of it is that dry mouth is my most bothersome symptom.

Just started Contrave yesterday. First felt like I had to throw up, but couldn’t. Felt really out of it and tired. Also too sick to get off the bed. I think you lose weight on it because you’re too sick to eat.
Tried to eat a hamburger. Two bites and I threw it away.
Twenty four hours later still feel terrible. Dreading taking my morning pill.
Fiance said to give it a few days. Not sure I want to feel like this or worse to give it a chance.
I need to lose 50 lbs but is this the way to do it?
I’ve read how people even have worse side effects than I’ve had so far. To me this pill sounds potentially dangerous.

Hi. I was not and am not way overweight and I’ve been taking contrave for over 1 year and love it. I felt side effects for the first 4-5 days but once I was taking 2 in the morning and 2 at night it was great. I lost 10 or so pounds but more than anything its the thoughts that have changed – I’m not thinking about food All Day Long. When I forget and miss the 2 in the afternoon I can feel it and can sit down and binge watch netflix and eat ice cream
What it has done overall is allow me to want to eat healthy foods and not crave sugar. If I have something with sugar I’m just ‘not that into it’ so even if i try and eat a bunch it doesnt give me the high.
I’d love to hear of anyone else who has used it long term – I’d also like to know if anyone out there has taken 6 per day and if the effects are different. Thanks!

I have been using Contrave for just under two months. In those two months, I have gone from 210 to 183 lbs – quite remarkable. Just after I started my fourth week (full dose 2 am/2 pm,) I noticed the constipation side effect. I have been taking a stool softener, which has been very successful, and no longer have that issue. Just in the past week, I have, however, been experiencing significant nausea (bad enough to miss two days of work) and related vomiting. I suffer from migraines anyway, but have noticed that my headaches are no longer controllable with the normal medication – which is also affecting my work.
I have been very impressed with the effectiveness of the prescription. I have coupled the medication with an enhanced walking program, and am very diligent about recording my food intake on the Fitbit app. I have had a significant decrease in my hunger, and a correlating decrease in my caloric intake. I am considering reducing the dosage to see if I maintain at least some of the benefits, but reduce the side effects.

HI, I started taking Contrave yesterday and it was HORRIBLE!!! I took the pill in the morning and by 12:30pm I was vomiting, felt flushed, confused, and had this overall feeling of doom. My doctor prescribed this medication to help me lose weight. First let me note, I’m extremely sensitive to medication. So, no, this is NOT going to happen to everyone. I took the first Contrave, with plenty of protein and water as suggested, and by 2 pm that day I started developing symptoms very similar to the stomach flu (vomiting, nauseous, sweaty, loss of appetite, inability to focus, even a panic attack).
By the grace of everything holy, I made it through my work day only to come home in tears. My husband sent me to bed and I slept, though fitfully, only to be awakened in the morning by more vomiting. I slowly started feeling better as the next day wore on, but not 100%. To me, it’s not worth it. Hopefully, it will help someone else but, honestly, I question its toll on the body of a person who isn’t having side effects. Never again for me.

I took Contrave for more than a year and lost over 60 lbs while taking it. I had some minor side effects like constipation and occasional dry mouth but nothing that was more troublesome than hauling around the 60lbs!
I’ve been off of Contrave for a while now and I haven’t gained anything back. Yes, I work at not gaining every day, just like I worked every day to lose it. Contrave does not make weight loss easy, it just makes it possible. I had to do the work. Every day. It’s not a miracle. It’s a tool. Anyone who used Chantix to stop smoking will recognize the similarity.
No, no one drug is the perfect pill for everyone, but Contrave allowed me to change my relationship with food which has improved my health.

Good morning. I have a history of IBS-D, I specifically asked my doc prior to prescribing if it would flare up my digestive tract issues. He said and I quote, “you have nothing that is contraindicated.” I took 1 pill, ONE! and I have been in agony ever since. Severe cramping and diarrhea. It’s so bad it’s like a bowel prep before a colonoscopy. I took the pill at 10a yesterday and it’s 730a (almost 24 hrs later and I’m still having GI discomfort!) I took 8 Imodium to get through work last night and 3 this morning. Do NOT recommend this for anyone with GI issues at all!

Wow, well congratulations to all of those that have lost weight using Contrave and experienced very little side effects while taking it. I haven’t got a lot of weight to lose, so this may have been a bad choice on my part to ask my Doctor for a prescription. But like so many others who left comments, I’m struggling to keep off the weight due to age and lack of hormones and virtually no metabolism.
I started taking Contrave 1 pill 1 x a day, so this was my very first week. I experienced the WORST constipation ever. Pre-Contrave, I was very regular, same time every day and lickity-split – in and out.
However, while on Contrave, I’ve gone full days with no BM, and then when I tried, it was unnaturally dense (hard) that it caused hemorrhoids, which I’ve NEVER had. It’s awful.
I took a stool softener and a laxative, which helped to relieve the symptoms for the moment but this cycle continued to be an issue. I was hesitant to increase the dosage as the instructions recommend for fear that I would get even more clogged up. Quite frankly, it scared me that I was really making my gut unhealthy because this is not normal. I chose to stop taking Contrave.
I also had headaches throughout the day and experienced fatigue and sleepiness along with moments of spaciness. But honestly these were the least of my concerns considering what was going on inside my gut.

I’ve been on Contrave for almost 2 years now, and have lost about 45 pounds. With that loss I am just under an obese BMI, just overweight now. I have hit 2 or 3 plateaus where I didn’t lose any weight for 3-6 months, but then would suddenly lose about 10 pounds in a month. I’ve not had any side effects other than some mild occasional constipation that could be completely unrelated. For me I would say it’s been a success.
My problem is I’m on my 3rd doctor since I started the meds (not because of any issues, but doctors leaving/closing practices). The last one I went to is a CPN, and she wants me to sign up with a weight loss center before she will continue the prescription. I’m going to my first appointment tomorrow, but since my insurance probably won’t cover anything, I will probably just ask to go off the Contrave.

I’ve been on Contrave for three weeks, Sunday was the first week of 2 in the a.m. and 1 in p.m.
By Wednesday, I had a headache, depressed and I just slept for 2 days straight. Yes, I’ve probably lost a couple pounds but that’s because I’m not awake long enough to eat!! Depression and fatigue don’t seem like a good trade off for weight loss.

I lost weight on Contrave. Unfortunately, the side effects were just not worth it. They aren’t kidding when they say confusion, cognitive impairment and memory problems can result—I found myself almost stuttering at times, and collecting my thoughts was difficult. Oh—and the sweating was awful!, comparable to a drenching hot flash. I stopped taking the pills after three months, and now I’m back to normal. I absolutely do NOT recommend Contrave, especially for people who need to keep their wits about them at work!

I have been on contrave for 2 months now. I have lost weight, but the main thing about this medication is the way it makes me feel. I feel great! The pain that is always persistent in my body is completely gone! I used to move like anew 80 year old woman (I’m 30) And now I actually feel younger. I do have the crazy dreams, and the insomnia. I feel it’s a good trade for the pain to go away though! Even when Indochina my goal weight I plan on staying on this Rx for as long as possible.

My doctor prescribed Contrave because my eating was out of control due to depression and anxiety. Initially I experienced only minor side effects that resolved in a few days. I lost 15 pounds and had energy and it was great – for a while. Several weeks into the maximum dosage my anxiety and bad moods returned along with drenching sweats, dry mouth, sleep problems, constipation, a lack of energy and nausea. I also have nagging headaches that aspirin can’t dispel and that only ease up as the medicine wears off. I’m weaning myself off of the medication.

I’m a 56 year old male, 5’8″ and 250 pounds. My cardiologist tried Contrave and lost thirty pounds on it. He admitted that he also instituted a vigorous exercise regimen and that Contrave alone was not responsible for his weight loss. He suggested I give it a try. He didn’t mention the side effects but that is on me because I should have asked. I’ve been taking Contrave for ten days and today I made the decision to discontinue use of the drug.
I haven’t suffered from such gastrointestinal distress since thirty years ago when I had peptic ulcers with such severity that I ended up in the emergency room on five separate occasions! Like one comment I read about Contrave, I would rather be overweight than suffer from the side effects of this drug. Excessive stomach and intestinal gas, an empty stomach feeling like I haven’t eaten in days (all the time), constant nausea, headaches every afternoon/evening and an overall feeling of poor health with no vitality comparable to the flu that won’t go away.
The pharmaceutical companies who play the profits-mean-everything game and the doctors who are all too eager to write the prescriptions have practically made us a bunch of junkies who accept prescription drugs as an easy cure for all that ails us. I choose to stick to smart eating habits and exercise and continue to use prescription drugs but only when I have to. Maybe Contrave will work for you but it was a bad choice for me. Good luck.

Here’s the GOOD – I have been on Contrave for 7 months; started at 182 and now I’m 147 (5’5). I lost most of my weight early (1st 3 months), the last few months I’ve lost about a pound or 2 a week or none at all. Because I’m within 10 lbs of my goal weight, I’m going to taper off (consequently I never took the full dosage – just 2 in a.m. 1 before dinner).
After the first month, I stopped counting calories but the weight loss was constant-I exercise at least 3 days a week (3 hours of high intensity cardio and weights). When I first started I was walking at least 30 minutes every day. It seems like I’m never hungry unless it’s right before a dose. I used to have regular bouts of diarrhea but now I’m regular as ever!
This is the first time in 20 years I’ve seen 140-anything. It was really hard to lose weight in the past and thought it was due to being in my 40s, Contrave did the trick! My blood pressure has decreased to near perfect (110/70) and my cholesterol is down 30 points!
Here’s the bad – if I drink too much, I have terrible hangovers and really bad dreams. At one point I thought I was going to have a seizure. Which is the side effect of drinking with this RX. Speaking of dreams; I often don’t know if they’re dreams or reality and ask my husband to confirm (really strange). I have a hard time finding the right words and that is exasperated with drinking. The memory loss/brain fog has increased (another reason for tapering off.) I also have ringing in my ears but it isn’t that bad.
While tapering off, if there’s any major side effect I will add another comment.

I have been on Contrave sense 12/01/15 I was at 250pds and I weight 211 now . I didn’t like the way I felt when I started taking the 2 in morning so I asked my doctor about just taking 2 a day 1 in morning and 1 around 5 and it has been great , I feel so much better , I am almost off all my blood pressure medication, I count my 1200 calories faithfully it was hard at first but I don’t think about it anymore it’s natural. So give it a try. I found it was better if I ate something after I take it. So thank you Contrave you have changed my life for the good????

I’ve been taking Contrace for 3 months now and have lost 12 pounds. That’s just a drop in the bucket for me but with thyroid problems, I have had a lot of difficulty losing weight so I consider this reasonable success.
Right away, I noticed a problem with constipation but wasn’t too concerned. As time went on, I had several dizzy spells, problems with memory, crazy dreams, and even problems speaking (inability to find correct words). What I really noticed though was sweating. After just a little exertion in the heat, I would be dripping which was unusual for me.
It did work very well for decreasing my appetite and making me able to say no to food. It definitely works. I am decreasing the dose gradually in order to see if it helps with the sweating.

My doctor prescribed Contrave to help me lose weight. I experienced headaches the first two days, that were pretty debilitating, and would not subside. Then on the third day, I was extremely dizzy, shaky and I was very nauseated. I heard other’s compare it to the flu, morning sickness, vertigo, or food poisoning!! And believe me, it was ALL of those feelings for me. It was one of the worst days of my life. My doctor has advised me to STOP taking this drug. There are other ways to lose weight, and I would have to believe, safer ways than to put your body through these kinds of symptoms.

I’ve been taking Contrave for 6 weeks and have lost 12 lbs. I’m hypothyroid and my endo suggested I try it. My thyroid levels got really wacky last year and I gained 10 lbs seemingly overnight that I could not lose anything no matter what I did (and I definitely have much more than those 10 lbs to lose.) I was trying so hard with no success and it was depressing.
Side effects wise, every time I stepped up my dosage I’d be headachey for a day or two. An overall not feeling good feel. I had heard constipation was an issue so I take fiber supplements everyday. The only issues I am having are jaw clenching, (it isn’t constant, started at the 3 pill per day mark and seems to be lessening) and I get dehydrated very easily. The dehydration causes headaches and then I get nauseated. I’ve throw up twice after feeling dehydrated with a bad headache in the morning and then taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach. Then I’d feel fine.
My cravings have disappeared and I’m able to maintain a 1200 calorie day with no problems, sometimes it’s hard to want to eat 1200 calories. I haven’t thought about alcohol in weeks, which was another big issue for me.
Contrave has really helped me.

An update, if any one is interested, after taking Contrave for 6 months.
Side effects are completely gone and, as of today, I have lost 50 lbs. I managed to not gain any weight over the holidays and maintained – instead of binging like previous years.
I am thinking the major factor for me was depression and emotional eating, so Contrave addressed that effectively.

I only took Contrave for 2 wks. It definitely suppresses the appetite and takes away all cravings;, however the side effects are too scary and not worth it. There was the nausea and jitteriness that I tolerated, but then it effected my extremities in a strange way, my arms felt super heavy and it was like there was a delay from my brain to my arms. Super scary. Nothing is worth that!

I am a 5’2″ female starting out at 143 lbs. In seven months I have lost 16 lbs. I love Contrave. It has decreased any binge eating and cravings I have. I crave alcohol less as well. I have taken other diet pills over the years, and this one does not make me feel strange at all. I feel completely like myself. In the beginning I did have pretty bad nausea. I came very close to giving up. But I found if I drank a lot of water immediately after taking it, the nausea subsided. After one month I had no side effects. It was worth fighting through the first month.
Other benefits: I’m sleeping like a baby. Also, I have chronic low back pain and have taken hydrocodone for years. Oddly enough, my back pain has subsided tremendously. I’ve cut back on my hydrocodone by about 80 percent. However, when I do take the hydrocodone, I still find that it is effective, contrary to other experiences I’ve read about. Also, I find I have more mental clarity in the evenings after work and I have more energy to get things done around the house.
I recommend taking advantage of the ScaleDown program Contrave offers. The scale is very nice and it’s free, and it keeps you accountable.

I was down to 202 in about 3 months and then got off of it for about 3 months and gained back 30 lbs, then started it back up and lost the weight again in about 2 months. No side effects that I have noticed at all.

I have been taking Contrave for 6 months and have lost 50+lbs. Contrave has been a game changer for me. I started out at 208 and am now at 155lbs! The side effects were rough in the beginning, but I am so glad that I struggled through them! I can’t say that it has made me less hungry, but it has greatly affected my will power to say no to food and alcohol. It has been great at helping me to control my cravings, which is something that I have always struggled with. I relax a bit on my dieting and even allow myself to drink a little alcohol on the weekends. Doing this usually causes me to gain a couple of pounds, but it seems to come back off within a couple of days. I think that doing this has helped me to continue with a healthy lifestyle without feeling deprived. The Contrave combined with diet and exercise has worked great for me, and I would recommend that anyone struggling with their weight at least give it a try!

I’ve been on Contrave for five months and have lost 24 pounds. There were bad side effects at first but they subsided. One concern I have is that it renders pain meds ineffective. I had a surgical procedure and the pain med doesn’t work. I need dental work that I’m afraid to do now. I understand you have to be off Contrave for seven days for pain meds to work. I imagine you have to wean off Contrave and then restart at the gradual dosages but I’m not certain about that.

This drug is NOT worth it. My partner went on contrave at the suggestion of his doctor about 6 months ago. He was overweight (though not yet technically obese) at the time, and because of some liver issues his doc was anxious for him to lose weight. He bought into the hype around this drug and went on it. His appetite*did* decrease marginally, although he never had a big appetite to begin with. His tendency to stress-eat abated somewhat (I would say by about 40%). He did lose weight… But mainly because, in conjunction with taking contrave, he went on a very low carb diet, stopped eating processed foods, and stuck to a moderate exercise program. (The old “eat healthy, move more” prescription works wonders).
Two very big issues arose with contrave. First, the various insurance hoops one has to jump through just to continue taking the drug are onerous, to say the least. At one point, two doctor’s offices, two insurance companies, and one pharmacy were involved in what is apparently a fairly routine song-and-dance over preauthorizations, the net result of which was that he was unable to refill his prescription and went cold-turkey off contrave for about two weeks. The resulting depression left him unable to work, or function, until he could get back on the drug.
The other issue, that the makers of contrave and your doctor most likely won’t go out of their way to mention, is that it renders pretty much every prescription pain med available completely useless. Do NOT go on this drug if you experience any kind of chronic pain, or even suspect that you may need any kind of surgery or procedures performed while you are on it. As I write this, my partner is recovering from an oral surgery. The contrave he is taking means that he’s probably in for an excruciating next few days.
Bottom line: don’t mess with your neurochemistry as a first-line attempt to lose weight, especially not with this awful drug. It’s just not worth it.

I’ve been taking Contrave for about 2 months now. I do not feel I have lost any weight from it, I’ve lost about 8lbs total, but I feel it’s from the weight program with the personal trainer I had started. I am not obese by far, maybe 20lbs overweight. My blood pressure has been a bit high for quite a while, the increased exercise hasn’t helped at all. The doctor put me on blood pressure medication a few weeks ago. The last week are starting getting dizzy and lightheaded to the point of feeling like I was going to black out. Monday I went to the doctor as I thought maybe my blood pressure got to low, it was the highest it has ever been. I thought I was having a heart attack. So the doctor still wants me to take the Contrave and then gives me another drug to calm me down. I felt it is the Contrave though and am finding if I don’t take it I don’t get dizzy. If I do take it with 30 minutes I start getting dizzy again.
I’ve made the decision regardless of what my doctor says I am not taking. It hasn’t helped me lose weight and loading me up with more drugs to counter act the side effects seem crazy.

Contrave was a God-send for me! At 5″7’and 211lbs I went to my doctor in tears. I needed to lose weight. I wanted out of the fat suit! My doctor recommended Contrive, and the scale-down program. I was sent a scale and instructed to weigh in every day. I received Bluetooth weight loss tips, etc., to my phone.
Once on the medication I started having every side effect associated with it. I quickly went back to my doctor to tell him I didn’t want to take it anymore. He suggested that I cut my dosage. After I cut my dosage from 4 pills a day to 3, I started to feel much better. I had no more side effects after that. After about 8 months I lost a good 40 lbs. 10 months to a year in, I lost a total of 67 lbs!!! Yay I’m so excited be at a healthy weight. Notice I said healthy weight. I feel healthy and full of energy!
I highly recommend Contrave to anyone who is overweight and seriously ready to lose weight.
Thank you Contrave, you’ve changed my life!!! ?

This drug is horrible. The first day I took it I felt dizzy-nausea, shakes, and began profusely vomiting. I thought maybe I just had a flu or food poisoining so I waited a few days and I took it again and it was even worse. I was in bed and vomiting for approx 12 hours and I threw the very expensive $200 diet pill away!!! Down the toilet where they belong. I would rather be overweight!!

I was on Contrave for 4 months and lost a total of 20lbs. I took the medicine in combination with a healthy diet and exercise. The biggest thing I noticed was it cut my portion size (my biggest struggle) down considerably, and cut down my cravings. The side effects I suffered were headaches and occasional nausea. One additional thing I noticed was that it caused aversions to specific foods. Before Contrave I had been a 2 cup of coffee and 1 Diet Coke a day drinker for years. For some reason the medicine made me develop a aversion to both and I no longer drink coffee (I still have an occasional soda). You need to realize this is not going to be a miracle drug that turns you from a size 14 to a size 4, but if taken correctly in combination with healthy diet and exercise it will really help you. It was totally worth it for me personally and the weight has stayed off.

When I began taking Contrave six months ago I weighed 244 at six feet tall with Type 2 and high blood pressure. After six months using Contrave I now weigh 217 blood sugar normal and blood pressure normal both with a minor amount of medication. The only side effect I experienced was constipation which is why at 217 I quit the drug. Good luck.

I have been taking Contrave for about a week now. It was expensive, even with a discount card (my insurance would not cover it). I had been counting calories and exercising, but had reached a plateau that I could not get past for over a year and became discouraged and gained 15 pounds back of the 30 I had lost.
Since I started using Contrave, I have been having mild headaches, have been jittery, and have started having problems going to sleep. It may have helped curb my appetite slightly, but I still feel hungry sometimes. Since I paid so much for it, I feel like it would be a waste not to use it, however, if I continue to have these side effects, or they become worse, I may have to discontinue.
I have lost 2 pounds in a week, but I have also been carefully monitoring what I have been eating, so this loss is not uncommon for me even without the aid of weight loss medications. If I had to do it over again, I don’t think I would have bought this medication. My BMI is 29, but I don’t have high blood pressure or diabetes. If I had to do it over again, I would have saved my money and continued with what I was doing, which was counting calories, carbs and exercising.

I have been on Contrave for 2 months. I have lost 24 Pounds. It helps control cravings for bad foods, which has always been a problem for me. I have used Contrave along with diet and excercise and it has been a life saver. The only real side effect I have had is dry mouth.

I’ve lost 35 pounds on contrave! It took my appetite completely away as well as any craving for alcohol or sugar in general. So you see it takes away your cravings for all sugars completely, from fruit to candy to alcohol, anything that”pleases” your brain. It’s working great for me. I was at 150 my whole life then was diagnosed with a mood disorder from there went to 220 lbs now down to 185. So I’m a couple of pounds off but you see it’s working for my weight as well as what it’s really made for the disease of addiction…

I am one of the women in the ad for Contrave. That was in 2014. I didn’t start the medicine until 4/15. It’s been over a year on the medication. I started at 187 and now weigh 150. I have 12 more to go. The side effects are minimal. I dealt with constipation and dry mouth. People need to know they aren’t going to get every single side effect listed. If you read side effects of Pepto they’re awful. Yet you take it. The drug is meant to help you make a healthy lifestyle change and add exercise. There are people that have lost 90+ pounds in the last year from C. It’s meant for long term even after goal.

I started Contrave 7 weeks ago with one small effect lasting only 2 days.
I have been ill and already had so many of the effects listed before starting Contrave. I’ve always had migraines, and had heart surgery for birth defects. I also have a spine injury. I began having chronic pain from several sources, which caused chronic fatigue and depression for which I’ve taken Adderrall and antidepressants for over 3 years.
The fatigue has left me craving sweets and medications have caused weight gain. I was 140 before all this. I’m now 225. ?
Adderrall caused an increase in heart rate and blood pressure and my cardiologist wanted to minimize the strain on my heart and started me on metropolol tartrate 4 weeks ago.
The day after, I had a weird headache from the base of my neck up the back of my head. The next day, I had the same headache, but extremely severe. I stopped the metropolol until I spoke to the doctor Monday. He said it didn’t cause headaches and to keep taking it. I did and haven’t had another headache since. Maybe the combination of metropolol and Contrave caused this.
I haven’t noticed any decrease in appetite or cravings though, but after 4 weeks, my doctor noted a 2 pound loss.
Considering I had only 2 effects that went away quickly, even with all the medication I’m on in combination, it seems that Contrave side effects aren’t a problem with me.
I’ve seen people who have had varying experiences, so I’d suggest you don’t throw it out unless the doctor recommends it due to side effects. Some people haven’t noticed any weight loss until they’ve been on it 2 or 3 months. And some haven’t had reduced cravings or appetite like me, yet they may still have weight loss. So give it a chance for a few months.

I have been on Contrave for three weeks and have lost ten pounds. I experience some lightheadedness, trouble sleeping, mild tremors, dry mouth, and nervousness. The good news is that I no longer crave food. I am easily maintaining a 1000 to 1200 calorie diet and have lost my taste for sweets. I feel like I am finally free. Obsessing over food and overeating drove me crazy but I felt like nothing could help. Not anymore. I can live with the side effects and take steps to deal with them. I am on the road to better health, and that makes it all worth the effort.
I am a breast cancer survivor. I have thyroid problems and degenerative joint disease in hips and spine. I was on the road to high blood pressure and diabetes if I couldn’t get my weight and eating habits under control. Losing weight was imperative to improving my health and lifestyle. Contrave is the answer for me.

I started taking Contrave a little over a week ago. I also take medicine for my thyroid and xarelto for my DVT’s. I’ve lost 7.5 lbs without any side effects. That is until yesterday. I woke up with my chin feeling a little numb so I didn’t take the afternoon pill. The numbness subsided. Today it is back, almost feels like I had a shot of novicaine. Has anyone else had a side effect like this?

I’ve been on Contrave for 6 weeks and have lost 23 lbs. The first week my appetite was less, and I began losing weight. When I started ramping up to 3 pills and then 4 pills a day, I was struggling with insomnia. I had a 13-day business trip, and I needed my sleep so went off the meds during that time.
Once I returned, I ramped up to where I was before for a week and then two pills twice a day. I found the side effects less. I was serious this time, as my knees and feet had terrible pain from all the walking. With Advil PM I was able to sleep better, and the side effect lessened. Some days I felt a little wound up, slight manic but something I was aware of and could control when interacting with people. Got back to the gym but could only do the bike but quickly increased up to 30-minute intervals and a good sweat. Hunger was less, and I began to let hunger be my friend. Those urges to binge were mental but not as physiological. I found that interesting. I wasn’t craving.
In time I got into the groove and started losing weight and feeling better. Usually once or twice a week I had a nice dinner out, with a cocktail or glass of wine and indulged in a steak with fries, or a brick oven pizza with salad. Found I was full and didn’t need dessert. It was easy to get back to the program the next morning. I hope this keeps working.
Contrave is a helpmate but one has to stay focused and try and do some exercise during the week. I’m motivated to lose at least another 30 lbs. Yes, I know the last pounds are harder to lose, and it takes a couple of years to re-set your weight set point. Gaining weight usually happens after dieting. But with the Scaledown program to help me focus and Contrave, I know I can do this.

I think Contrave works for a specific kind of overweight. I have been taking Contrave mostly for maintenance and I’ve never had such an easy time of it. At one point I weighed 227, but about 12 years ago I lost the weight. However, I hadn’t been able to stop swinging back and forth between 140 and 160. (160 is too high for me- it affects my blood pressure and breathing.)
If foods (especially sweets) are your “alcohol,” and/or if your actual alcohol consumption is affecting your weight, this drug is amazing. I have always been a candy “addict” but now, for the first time in my life, I effortlessly treat it the way most people do- it’s AMAZING! Also, I never had a drinking problem but I used to like a glass or two of wine, now I feel very meh about it. (That’s actually a little bit annoying to me, but could be a godsend for some.)
I was very nauseous for the first…probably month total, but since then, about a year, no effects. Actually, I’ve run out a time or two and not really noticed feeling differently, then after about a week I think, “WHY am I eating so much lately…? Oh shoot! Refill…”
Bottom line, these two drugs have a very long history of safely treating addiction, and if you overeat in a way that feels like an addiction, it can really help.

I have been taking Contrave since June 2015. I have lost 56 lbs to date. 15 more to go. When I first started taking Contrave I did have some of the side effects dull headache, tiredness, constipation, and Strange dreams. I tried taking the pills as recommended. After i got to the last stage of taking 2 pills in the am and two at night, I felt like that was just too much. I felt agitated. So I stopped taking the ones at night, I just took 2 in the am and only 1 around 3pm. That has worked great for me. I continue to go with that dosage . I did notice in the beginning that I was kinda sleepy in the afternoon, and had a dull headache daily, I took some ibuprofin for the headache and that went away, along with being sleepy. I still once in a great while have constipation, but I just take correctol and it helps. What I did really like was it gave me more energy. I felt like I had a different mind set. The more I exercised the easier it was to continue. I am still doing Zumba class couple times a week. I think what the key to all the weight loss was doing the scale down program along with Contrave. That scale down program is the best support I have ever had. There is always a positive note and guidance. In the past I have had friends that started out supportive, but eventually stopped going to exercise class or stopped dieting with me. With Scale down they are always there every morning with encouragement and praise. That definitely kept me going when the weight went up or stayed the same. If you really want to lose weight, this gives you the power to accomplish it. Nothing else I tired ever worked. All I can say about those side effects is they eventually go away. Except the strange dreams. The one thing I’m concerned about though is.. when I reach my goal, do I still need to continue with these pills. I sure don’t want to gain the weight back after all this hard work. If someone has completed this goal, can you tell me if we have to continue with the pills or just quit ? Thanks and good luck.

I have been on the medicine for about 7 weeks now. I went back to the dr after two weeks complaining of a dull headache and neck pain. I thought it was unrelated but now I am not so sure. It has definitely gotten worse over the past couple weeks. I feel a lot of pressure in the back of my head and my ears feel like they are popping a lot. I am also growing very sensitive to noise.
The more my head hurts the more nausea I feel. I go back to the dr in a couple days and will discuss this with her but since I started taking the 4 pills a day I have definitely felt worse as the days go by. I feel like my head is going to explode. I have always had issues with constipation and dreaming so those are not really new.
I have lost 10 pounds on it but I cannot continue to take it if that is indeed what is causing my head to feel this way.

My dr. Prescribed contrave in March of 2015 as of today I have lost 16 pounds but not without issues with digestion and severe bouts of diarrhea, insomnia, very bad mood swings and irritability. I don’t know about anybody else but I don’t think 16 pounds is worth having to run to the bathroom constantly. Then again just my opinion was wondering if anybody else had the same issues

I’ve been on Contrave for 11 weeks and have lost 23 lbs. I went on it because I had gained 30 lbs and could not seem to lose a lb, no matter what I did. This med has done what my dr said it would do, my appetite is drastically reduced, my sugar cravings are gone, and I have more energy. It has allowed me to stick to a 1,200 calorie a day diet. This is not a magic pill…you need to change your diet as well. With that being said, the first 2 weeks on it were horrible for me. I felt groggy and out of it and just plain awful. I almost stopped taking it. But after I started week 4, that all stopped and I’ve not really had any side effects since. I feel really good actually. I do have concerns as to what will happen when I decide to stop taking it. I’m not that far from my goal weight and don’t want to stay on this any longer than necessary. But I’ll discuss all that with my dr when I get to that point I guess. So far, so good….
Linda
I don’t think I will continue the medication after about a week of taking it. I even cut the dose in half of one half pill per day. I was still experiencing the nausea, headache, and just not feeling right. I don’t think you need to feel the nausea in order to lose weight. I like to enjoy my food and the taste. I don’t understand why this medication makes you feel this way and the headaches as well. I also have trouble sleeping at times. It’s really unfortunate as I have almost the whole bottle left and it’s expensive. Any thoughts on what to do with it?
Mike
Linda, like most medications, their are side effects but eventually they subside. I had horrible insomnia and strange dreams. But after three weeks, the side effects had mostly left. I take Advil PM to sleep and I know of others who took a little more time ramping up the dosages so your body could adjust. Give it a try again to see if the side effects will lessen. Otherwise, you’ll never know.

Well, I’ve been on Contrave since last September and the reason I’ve even come across this post is because of the vague “neuropsychiatric reactors”. I am having memory gaps and trouble focusing (which makes college impossible!) which is ironic since I’m in for psychology pursuing neuroscience. Yikes. So, I’ve not experienced “miracle weight loss” or anything (25-30 lbs in 7 months) but I DO have benefits from the welbutrin (I’m also on prozac) and the naltrexone (for the legit food addiction) so it’s hard to consider going off of it now, but I definitely need to address these problems with my doc.

I started taking Contrave in July 2015. It is a miracle medication. I lost 50lbs by November. Of course I wrote down everything I ate and stayed between 1000-1200 calories a day. I’ve never before been able to stay on a diet for so long and never before lost more than 20lbs. Personally, I resent articles that poo poo these results and tell folks that the way to lose weight is just eat less and exercise more. Yes! that is true but if that’s all there was to it we would all be thin. This medication made it possible for me to eat less and exercise more.
I only take 2 tablets every morning. For the first 6 weeks I had that intermittent loopy feeling. It was uncomfortable but the results of weight loss made it worth getting through. My knees no longer hurt. I’m able to get up off the ground or vacuum under the bed. My glucose has gone down from diabetic levels to normal levels too. I look and feel 12 years younger! (I’m 63)
Lately, I seem to be returning to some of my old habits of eating buttered popcorn so I think I’ll up my dose and add one pill in the afternoon. Has anyone else had this experience? I’m hoping the medication doesn’t stop working.
If anyone is interested I’ve come up with some very tasty low calorie salad dressing recipes (under 20cal a tbs.) using buttermilk, yogurt, gorgonzola and mayo.

I have had a long history of weight control issues. Recently I hurt my knee and I just knew that I had to get weight off of the knee and at 55 and 260 lbs I was a walking heart attack waiting to happen. So I researched and ended up choosing contrave because it is made from two drugs that have been out for a long time.
So it’s been one month and I’m down 13 lbs, I’m thrilled with this drug! I’ve had almost no side effects except constipation. In the first week I had mild nausea which passed quickly and 1 vivid dream. That’s it!! As an oncology nurse we often evaluate a patients future issues with nausea by looking at their past. So if you were very nauseated in you’re pregnancy, while driving in a car, on a boat, or in an airplane it may be a good reason to avoid drugs that have nausea as a side effect.
I don’t claim to be an expert. As long as I take an occasional colace and keep hydrated I am doing fine. I don’t even think about food anymore. It’s like a switch has been turned off. With a coupon the drug is only $70 dollars a month and I more than make that up by my reduced grocery bill! Oh and also there is the added benefit of the wonderful sense of wellbeing I get from the Wellbutrin! Yea!!!!

The drug can work if you get past the side effects. I have lost 21 lbs in 5.5 weeks. However, I have to tell you it is mostly from my own will power. The first time I took Contrave was for 8 days. By mistake I took it backwards. For 4 days I took 4 pills, and my blood pressure (top number) was in the upper 170’s. It scared me to death. I stopped and later went back on it for another 8 days. However, the head aches and nausea and nightmares made me throw in the towel and stop this medication for good.
I will attribute my motivation to the drug because I did not feel like eating for weeks after taking it the first 8 days. Contrave did plant a seed in my brain that I can lose the weight. It will take me longer because I have had a thyroid condition since 1995. This time I am eating regular food. The Contrave magnet sticks in my head, and I only eat a fist full of regular food at dinner. For breakfast and lunch I eat a fiber bar or a medifast meal. I hate taking any medicine so the elective ones make me think. Am just going to hang in there and keep trying until I reach my destination number for weight loss.

Yes I did suffer from gastric pains so bad that I thought I would end up in the ER. I already have diverticulitis. I ended up having a scan because I have had benign tumors on each ovary. I did not know where the pain was coming from. After reading these comments; I am thinking it was GI problems from Contrave. My doctor said that is what she thought because nothing else looked any different from the last scan I had when my diverticulitis was discovered a few years ago.

I been taking contrave since September of 2015. So far I lost 65 pounds. I had headaches, ringing in my ears plus constipation . It is now April 2016. Im having thyroid trouble, just found out I have thyroid cancer. Will be having surgery in a couple days. So right now I am not taking the contrave. Will I start using contrave again after my surgery ? I don’t know , I will have to talk to my doctor about that. I want to lose another 65 pounds. If my doctor feels as though I will be fine to start the contrave again I will do so. I would like to lose weight on my own without help from a pill. I was still watching what I ate by counting calories. But I did not have more energy. Losing weight and being more healthy is very important. If I have to take a pill to help me do that then I guess I will as long as I know it is safe.

I started Contrave on January 12, 2016. I have lost 17-18 lbs. to date and participate in the free scaledown program. I had zero side effects except constipation and dry mouth…I drink about 80 ounces of water as recommended and I take the meds with protein as recommended.. in the morning i have a small triple zero yogurt, at night with dinner. I followed the suggestions to use Miralax daily and it helps, plus i eat fiber and fruit like grapes/fresh pineapple. i do not have a problem with energy levels or not sleeping but i have vivid dreams . this is the ONLY medication that has helped me lose and feel in control of my eating, since menopause set in it has been impossible, it is NOT a magic pill but it helps with the constant grazing and snacking…and i feel better taking it than i have felt in 6 years. I started at 203 and am currently at 185 with much better diastolic BP numbers….i have HTN which i hope will be well controlled as i lose weight and exercise. I have started exercising again because I am THRILLED with my progress. One word about headaches…they can be exacerbated by dehydration…so drink water or seltzer…stay away from the diet soda and extra caffiene throughout the day.

I have been taking Contravention since March 2016 and have lost 9.4 lbs. Currently, I am at a plateau and can’t seem to lose the next 10. The worst side effect has been constipation. However, I do not do a good job including fiber in my diet so I feel that it’s on me. The “free” scale down program costs after the initial 3 months. Not sure if it is worth paying for….
Not totally sold on the benefits…

I have been on Contrave since the beginning of December 2015, under the supervision of a bariatric specialist MD. I’m on a very-low-calorie-diet of meal replacement bars and shakes, and have lost approx. 40 lbs to-date. I take a number of medications due to other health issues, and I have had none of the listed side effects. Prior to starting my weight loss plan, I was very addicted to carbs and sugar (i.e., chips, candy, chocolate, cookies, junk food, etc.) . Contrave is an important part of my weight loss plan; I believe it has been instrumental in helps me to curb those cravings so I can detox from my addiction and lose weight as I build healthy eating and exercise habits. I previously suffered from chronic depression which is still very well-controlled with medication and I regularly have low-normal blood pressure readings, not high.
If your doctor brings up the possibility of using Contrave as part of a weight loss plan, please realize that NOT everyone has all / any of the listed side effects and that it may be very beneficial to you.

I just started my 2nd week with Contrave. I am very constipated. Haven’t gone in 4 days. I’ve been eating lots of grapes, Halos and salad as well as high fiber cereal.

No Pun intended but it will pass. Once your body is used to the med it returns to normal but just remember you are not eating much food so: little in, little out.

I’ve been taking it for 3 weeks and I’m loving it too! I have had a couple hot flashes and some pretty bad stomach cramps, but my hunger is gone, and I feel clearer if that makes since. I think it’s the anti depressant part. So far my side effects are worth it and I’m excited to continue taking contrave!

My doctor prescribed Contrave back in June of 2015. I’m 5’1 and went up to 170 when I used to be at 125. Doctor made it very clear that I needed to be on this medication for an entire year in order not to gain any weight I had lost back. Any who when i started taking the 2 pills twice daily is when I began with the nausea, so much that I had to throw up to make feeling go away. But my mistake was that I was not taking (while eating food). YOU HAVE TAKE PILLS WITH FOOD!!! As far as for my sleeping, at the very beginning i could not fall asleep then the weird dreams started happening. Now March of 2016 all of that is gone. I know I could’ve lost more by now if I would take the pills every single day but i have not been. I would forget most of the time especially on weekends. Here I am March and i still need to loose 20 more lbs. Starting today I will be sticking to it and watch what i eat more. One more thing…..my Dr. said I’d have to make myself eat because the pills would not make me hungry at all. SO NOT TRUE…..I still get hungry only thing is that I get full much faster. Plus I PROMISE TO GET ON MY EXERCISE BIKE. WISH ME LUCK. :)

I tried it for 3 weeks had a stoned feeling all the time. I didn’t like the feeling and felt it was dangerous when driving. When driving it would cause me to focus on unusual thing like a blue sign instead of driving.

I have only been constipated a few times in my life and those times I’ve ended up in the ER . Since taking Contrave constipation has been a regular annoyance. Accompanied with gastric pain, sometimes severe, I think I’m going to just do Wellbutrin like I used to.. At least my insurance covers that.

I have been taking wellbutrin and naltrexone, together, not under the brand name of Contrave for almost a year. I started at 272, and am now down to 190. I have ringing in the ears, and constipation. Other than that, I’ve not experienced any of the other side effects discussed. My dosages are not exactly what would be prescribed under Contrave, but close, and I only take 1 pill of each daily. I’ve been able to maintain this weight loss, and still slowly lose more. My lowest weight has been 186. I’ve not worked out tremendously, but I have been much more conscious as to what I put in my mouth, and how much. My whole goal was to reshape how I eat, how much I eat, and what I eat. There have been a few times that I’ve overindulged, and wow, my body knew it. It’s like you hit a brick wall. Nothing more is going in, not food, not beverage. I don’t know how long you can stay on this medication. My blood pressure is great. I’ve been very happy with this medication, other than the constipation. Luckily I don’t have the gas and other issues, just can’t go. Going to try some herbal laxatives to see if I can get any relief that way. Good luck to you all, and I hope you have great success.

I first started Contrave almost a year ago. The only side effect I had was nausea, I would eat crackers only 4, and it helped in the first month I went from 175 to 160. I was thrilled the weight was dropping off, then I couldnt afford it. I am now back on it and have been for 3 weeks, I started at 156, and I am now done to 150 the scale plan helps I now look forward to getting up and weighing especially when you see you have dropped, even if it is an ounce or 2 I still dropped still have a ways to go, the only bad thing this time around is the nausea is worse and dry mouth, trying to drink more water to see if it helps. I am sticking to it, being only 4’10 I want to weigh at least 120. Keep with it, it works

I have just started taking Contrave. I am trying to decide if the side effects are worth it. I have the worst of the symptoms right after I take the medication. I do notice it helps with appetite control and I have a heightened sense of fullness throughout the day.

I’ve been on Contrave for 9 days now. The only side effect that I have noticed is a low, dull headache. It’s been manageable with Advil. I have not experienced constipation, dizziness or nausea. My energy level was decent before I started taking the medication, so I’m not sure if it has increased. However, I really noticed that my appetite was curbed after taking 2 pills per day. I was such a snacker — before lunch, in the afternoon and definitely after dinner. Contrave has really helped me manage these between meal cravings. If I need a small snack, I fit it in. Otherwise, I can wait until my next “real” meal. I was ready to make a change to how I was eating and have become more active. I really think that having the mindset to count calories and make better choices (consciously) has become easier after taking Contrave. My doctor recommended MyFitnessPal paired with measuring steps using my Fitbit. I received my scale today from ScaleDown. Tomorrow, I begin the daily weigh-in. My starting weight was 220 — I’d like to lose at least 60 pounds. I know I’ve dropped several pounds but I’m planning to start capturing the weight loss beginning tomorrow.

I have been on Contrave combined with a lower calorie diet and increased excercise for 6 months and have lost 57 pounds. It has not been an easy road with some side effects like headaches, abdominal pain and constipation but at the same time I’ve had a lot of good effects from it. Besides the obvious weight loss, I have been able to think more clearly, have more energy and no longer have a hard time with physical activity since losing all the weight. It has been worth it for me. The Scale Down program that comes with it keeps me on track too. If you are serious about losing the weight, its worth a try in my opinion.

I started Contrave early November – so I’ve been on it for 3 months now. I rarely remember to take the 2nd dose during the day. My blood pressure did go up, so now I’m taking something for it. I’m down about 15 lbs, which I’m impressed with and I like the fact that I’m just not that hungry anymore and feel full on very little. My goal is 25 lbs. My symptoms started in the 3rd month – I have this ticking in my right ear and constipation. I’m also a flight attendant and we suffer from that anyways, so I wasn’t sure if it was the Contrave that caused it. I do find every now and then that I have a little shakiness in my hands. I don’t want to stop taking it until I reach my goal, but I also don’t want to cause any harm to my body. What should I do? I have an appointment tomorrow with an ENT about my ear ticking. I’m now wondering if it’s the Contrave causing it as I see ear ringing is a side effect. I do like the fact that my weight is coming of slowly and I feel that I would be more apt to keep it off instead of a fast loss with fad diets. I’m going to talk to my Dr that prescribed it and see what he says, but any comments are welcome as well!!

I have gained weight in the past up to 204 lbs and was in tears. I am 43 and female. My doctor decided I would benefit from the two meds in Contrave. Long story short… a little nerve-wracking the first 2 pills were, however now, at a full dose of 4 pills a day, I FEEL great, and am down 9 lbs in a month (to 195). You Say 9 lbs is not much? It is. It is as much as Weight Watchers recommends.
I am a working busy mom of 4, so I do not get the exercise I need. If I did I imagine the weight loss would increase two-fold. Contrave allows me to have will power. Sure, the Big Mac looks good, but I now have enough will power to turn away, and the Biggie…I CUT DOWN my portions! The scale-down weighing is also a wonderful thing. I am also following (kinda of) Weight Watchers plan. So, if you get one thing out of my reply, it is that Contrave works for me! It is not a magic pill, but a tool to help you lose weight. (I also take 2 blood pressure pills and Zoloft.)

Hannah

I have had the same problems within the last week. I am on week 4 taking two tabs in the morning and two in the evening. After experiencing the extreme bloating, I didn’t take my evening tabs. I felt as though my food was still high up in my throat rather than being digested and it made me feel nauseous so I didn’t want to eat. After researching, I never could find corroboration between the medicine and the bloating, but it is the only new thing I have introduced to my daily life. I had that nauseous feeling for 2 days then I started taking Gas X, which seemed to help, however I took my two tabs this morning and the bloated feeling has come back so unfortunately after getting my prescription filled this morning at $70, I believe I am not going to take the tabs any longer. There have been more days then now when I felt horrible and it honestly isn’t worth it. There are other ways out there that will help me lose weight that won’t make me feel terrible. Good luck to everyone else that it is working for, I just can’t tolerate the bloating and taking Gas X like skittles.

I started taking Contrave on 12/14/15. Today is 1/12/16. I am 5’5″ and starting weight was 216lbs. I am 27 years old. I have been trying to lose weight by eating clean, drinking water, and working out daily but the weight wasnt coming off. I asked about Contrave and I have not had any issues, except that it makes me lazy. I feel sluggish. however, my weight is down to 202lbs so I am very happy about that. As a result of feeling sluggish, I exercise less, so if I were exercising more I would had probably lost more. My initial goal before Contrave was to lose 5lbs per month. With Contrave I have lost 14lbs in one month, and I hope to lose another 50lbs. Not all prescriptions are for everyone, but this is the only prescription that I am on and it has worked well for me.

Started Contrave approximately 6 months ago, at the lowest dose (1 pill) and took it for about 2 weeks. Had excellent results, hardly hungry, remind myself to eat, and the craving for sweets I have was gone! Also lost about 6 lbs.
I started to “move up” to a second pill each day for about a week, and found that I started to experiencing twitching, especially laying in bed at night. Decided to wean myself off the medication. Total frustration in that I started craving sweets and overeating again. so I did some research, found it was a known side effect, but not a serious one.
Ultimately decided to restart the medication, and for the last 3 months I have taken one pill a day and occasionally a second one. I have continued to lose weight taking that dosage, even over the holidays, total of 32 lbs now. I am 5’7″ and my starting weight was over 300lbs.
I am very happy with the medication, I have more energy and I have gone down one size in my clothing, however, I have realized I am now losing my hair. I have A LOT of hair, but it is coming out (when I wash it) much more than I am comfortable with.
I am heart broken and curious if there is something I can do to stop the alopecia. I do still have the occasional twitch as well. I had hoped to lose about 15-20% of my body weight then stop, but I may have to stop earlier. I also hope the hair loss is not permanent…

I have been taking Contrave for about five months now. When I began I weighed 205. This morning I was 146.8. I was overweight due to PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome). This means I have several small cysts that cover my ovaries. As of now I cannot get pregnant on my own. It holds on to fat like type two diabetes. My periods are highly irregular. I am also taking progesterone once a month for seven days.
My doctor has warned me to be sure to get at LEAST 7 hours of sleep every night. The only bad side effect I may be seeing would be anxiety however I am naturally anxious and I started a new job in a new state this year. Teaching of all things. Yes, this has helped me.
With PCOS I was eating probably healthier than most but unable to lose anything because of PCOS. This drug helped me get on level ground with the average adult. With a low carb moderate exercise in addition I have done well. My doctor also suggested scaling back the medication if four a day is too much. This is a very high dosage of these drugs and even more than someone struggling with depression takes.
I hope you consider if you really need this drug before looking into getting this. It’s not meant as a miracle drug or something that magically burns fat away. Those who have a medical condition and meet the drug with diet and exercise will see results. Others who do not will see the same results with just diet and exercise. I try to stay under 100 grams of carbs a day and jog 4 miles a day… or at least have walked/jogged that amount before bed. Jogging before bed will make a big difference.
This drug also is paired with scaledown program. They send you a scale you step on every morning and help you keep track of your weight. They will send texts and emails to help you find healthier choices or ideas along your weight loss journey. I had a BMI of over 30 because I am 5 foot 3 inches. I the max normal weight for a healthy BMI is 135. By the end I hope to lose over 70 pounds. All of this is in preparation to have children. If we can get my body healthy we will have a better chance.

I took this medication for two weeks. My doctor prescribed it in an effort to “kill two birds with one stone”. I was wanting to start something like Chantix in order to quit smoking. I also needed to lose some weight. Contrave was what the doctor ordered.
Now I will say this; I quit smoking at the end of the first week so it did work for that. However, due to the nausea, terrible nightmares, constipation, and other various unpleasant side effects, I opted to stop taking it after the second week. My personal goal of quitting smoking had been met, so I was happy about that. It did also help with weight loss, very little, but some. After stopping it, I began over-eating and gained about 12 pounds. I considered taking Contrave again after a week of being off it, but no, it was just too awful. I will just rely more on my own willpower to keep from binge-eating like I started doing. It may take longer, but I’ll be so much happier to feel more like a person instead of something… not so human.
If I had known how horrible this drug would make me feel, I would have avoided it like the plague. I think that’s the whole idea actually. You feel so bad you don’t want to eat, smoke or really do much of anything except maybe sleep, but because of the nightmares, even that wasn’t really so good, but it was better than being awake and constantly feeling miserable.

I am 57 y.o., 5’1 and am at the end of my 3d month on Contrave – lost only 8 pounds (weighted 163 lb prior to Contrave – it may not seem too much but I started having issues with my liver, cholesterol, etc). I have hypothyroidism for 30 years, and I am not big eater at all, there is no need to suppress my appetite. I eat like a bird and very healthy – no snacking, no junk food, no sweets and very little sugar (and no sugar substitutes). I also had a total hysterectomy at my 40. Up to age of 45 I was 110 lb, size 0/XSmall/XXSmall.
I started having weight issues thereafter due to my slow metabolism, early menopause, and sitting job with the computers (about 50 hrs a week on average). My energy level is so low thatI can’t handle much of the exercising or any physical activities at the end of the day.st
Low thyroid often cause depression, and I have had that continuously over the years.
My endocrinologist prescribed Contrave as some help with the depression because I refuse to take strong antidepressants, plus to help to loose some weight. Side effects I have – extremely dry mouth that starts about an hour after taking pills. I drink a lots of water, but it does not help much. My blood pressure also increased – I usually had quite low 110/80, and felt ok, but now it goes up to 155/100. I will be starting to reduce daily Contrave doze to get off it. My Doc is looking for the alternatives for me.

I took contrave for about 6 months. This medication definitely curbs your appetite. So I took advantage of that and cut back on my grazing. I lost about 30 pounds with cut backs and resistance training however, Taco Bell seduced me and I began a very unhealthy relationship with the Taco Bell drive thru and I gained most of it back. One thing I noticed was that I started having frequent PVC’s (palpitations).
Since I am a Paramedic I didn’t really worry because most PVC’s are benign and everyone has them. Then I had a few episodes of Atrial Fibrillation. Which if you want to feel like you are about to drop dead, have an episode of Atrial Fib.
My cardiologist is blaming Contrave. I didn’t really experience any nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps or gender identity disorders. And one big thing I am thankful that I didn’t experience was sitting through a Mickey Gilley concert. I still don’t like Elvis music and I am a firm believer that every night before bed the boogeyman always checks his closet to make sure Chuck Norris is not in there. So in conclusion, palpitations were my only problems.

I started Contrive on June 14, 2015-have lost 24 pounds and reached my goal. I am 66 years old, weighed 158 at 5’3″ tall-got down to 134. I found it an enormous help in starting and continuing my weight loss. It helped curb my appetite tremendously-and I also changed my eating habits totally, and got into regular exercising. I eat primarily fruits, vegetable and beans for protein Consequently it is not just taking a pill and magically weight loss happens. I did have two bouts of nausea at the beginning-some excessive sweating while working out this past summer, but these side effects went away in a few weeks. For me, it is heaven sent. Everyone is different but I am thrilled I used this.

First week, head hurt Second week felt bad like a cold, 3rd week sick stomach did not want to eat. Fourth week ,When I entered this week all my systems went away.
There was a big change when I reached 2 morning 2 night. I felt great. Lost only two pounds, But I would not stop My weight 189 5 foot 2. I decreased how and what I ate, . I crave sweets maybe twice a month so I eat a little and waited and the urge went away. I decided not to count my weight mind games.
Went to the Doc today and asked not to tell me weight. The nurse said really good, don’t lose too much. Pants size strechpants extra large, next large next median large, medium average. I now am at small average in 11 months. I feel great. energy . active I really enjoy my weight loss. I am me again. I love this, Maybe you should not expect a magic weight lost, I have no side effects but some constipation , I use over counter and it works.
At 64 we all get constipation, Not bad, Stick with it bad things go away, it takes time, I will not stop til I reach my weight goal. Gayle

I have been taking Contrave for 3 months and have lost 22 pounds. I do take the recommended 4 pills a day dosage. At the beginning I experienced dizziness and nausea but that has stopped. There has been some mild constipation. I have not had any of the severe side effects that others have experienced. I think once you get past the second month, the side effects will diminish. I also very much like the scale down program. It sends me a text after every weigh in so it makes me feel more motivated to not have the text say I am holding steady or I have gained weight. I plan on getting one more bottle and wean myself off slowly and then I will continue dieting and exercising on my own. I feel that it has helped me get in a routine of eating less and exercising more. I don’t think that this is a “magic” pill. You do have to put in the effort to eat healthier and exercise more.

Put on Contrave to lose weight gained from numerous health problems. Have a very high tolerance for meds so wasn’t worried about nausea etc. WRONG! Day 1 and 1 dose in and I am done! Started with severe abdominal cramps, and nausea to be followed by severe diarrhea and projectile vomiting. Been going on for hours. Having flashbacks to two years ago and my heavy chemo. Same side effects and it is not worth it! Hate I wasted the money on it but I refuse to touch it again!

I have just started my 3rd month on Contrave. After the first month I was down almost 10lbs, 2nd month 5lbs. Side effects for me have been headaches and elevated blood pressure. Occasionally I can feel my heartbeat in my head but it’s nothing that really bothers me. The first month there were times that I had to force myself to eat. I go to sleep very easily but seem to be “sleepier” than I used to. I have noticed a decrease in my desire to drink alcohol. I am also using Plexus products which help with having a regular bowel movement.

I took myself off Contrave after taking it for 2 months. Once the dosage increased to 4 pills/day, the side effects kicked it. The dizziness was worse than the nausea. I found myself eating crackers (carbs) more hoping it would help with the nausea. It did not and I did not lose an ounce. I was really hoping for positive results too. My thyroid was killed 21 years ago so weightloss has been very difficult if not impossible even with healthy eating and exercise.

I have been taking Contrave for one month. Honestly, I think I was doing better with my weight loss without the Contrave! At first, I did not think I was suffering any side effects and then I realized that my system felt “off” and suddenly constipation was a problem, not to mention the excessive sweating/hot flashes! If I had known that these were possible, I never would have started the medication. Now I hope that the sweating stops soon. I stopped taking the drug about 3 days ago.

I have been on Contrave since mid July 2015. In the first 2 months I lost 30 pounds. I am eating SIGNIFICANTLY less than I used to. Small breakfast, no lunch, smaller dinner. I’ll have a couple pieces of fruit to snack on during the day. I’m just not hungry. Although I would say that now when I do get hungry it’s sudden. I don’t gradually get hungry. Not hungry, not hungry, not hungry & then BAM, hungry. It has worked amazingly well for me. No nausea at all. The only side effects I’ve had are mild constipation, some stomach cramping and I’m sweating more. I am spending a lot less at the grocery store and my clothes are a lot looser. Plus my insurance covers most of the cost, I only pay $20 a month. I am truly in love with this. I can honestly say that this has changed my life.

I have been using Contrave for 6 months and have lost 50 lbs. which is 13% of my starting weight. Taking this diet pill has curbed my appetite enough to help me stay on a 1200 calorie diet. I’m doing water aerobics twice a week for exercise.
I would also like to mention that because of Contrave, for $60 a month I have avoided paying $13,000 for weight loss surgery, which makes me very happy!

The first time I tried it I thought I was having an allergic reaction because I developed itching and a rash. During the 2 weeks I had severe stomach cramps and bouts of diarrhea. After a short hiatus I tried taking it again. No rash this time but have had constipation and stabbing stomach pains. The nausea isn’t too bad, but I swear since I started back taking it (3 weeks this time) that I have been hungrier. I sure don’t need that. I think I am better off on my own. I am glad that I had the opportunity to try it.

I started taking Contrave in Feb. 2015. It’s just about a year now and I am still taking it, full dose of 4 pills a day. I reached my goal weight after about 9 months, losing 80 pounds. I went from a size 18 to size 6. I did have minor nausea during the first months but nothing major and it went away. No headaches at all. Biggest side effect for me is constipation. Managed with OTC, prunes, and increased fiber in diet and so far is better. I also have a weird feeling in my ear from time to time, like something fuzzy is in there, so strange. No idea if that’s from the Contrave though. I too have recently begun seriously craving candy/chocolate which I never cared about before. I have lost a bit more than my original goal and am now maintaining for about a month now.
Bottom line is that you have to be ready to change your lifestyle and truly commit to eating better and regular exercise.
I began tracking everything I ate in MyFitnessPal, measuring all portions, and exercising/ walking just about every day on treadmill. I still exercise regularly walking on treadmill but no longer measure and track food. I want to maintain for a while before I wean off.
Contrave helps with appetite and portion control but I do believe after about 7 or 8 months, its effects have worn off. I am starting to want larger portions and hope that I can overcome that so I don’t gain it back. Perhaps I have built up tolerance ??

I have been on contcrave for 70 days. Never took 4 pills a day only 3. Too much nausea. Then I noticed terrible heat flashes and sweating. I thought it was from hormones until I started reading experiences from other contcrave users. Until I found out the side affects I found myself taking more HRT topical creams to stop the heat flashes. Wow. I could have screwed up bad because I really didn’t need more hormones. My hormone patches and creams warn of stroke and breast cancer. Thank God I researched the side affects of contcrave. I could have been a stroke or breast cancer victim. Needless to say I quit taking contcrave today!!!!!

I have taken myself off Contrave. I was warned by my doctor that some people had difficulty taking it and the dosage would be gradually increased weekly. I was never able to make it to 4 pills per day as prescribed and backed down to 3 per day due to mild nausea. Upon starting it the second month the cramps, diarrhea and gas were too much, especially with no disscernable weight loss. It seemed to me the way it worked was to make you too sick to eat!

I had my thyroid removed due to multiple nodules. No cancer was present. I struggled with the symptoms of low thyroid until put on a high dose of Armour Thyroid. I lost almost all of the 45 pounds I had put on while taking various does of Synthroid…

My experience with Contrave has been positive so far. In 3 months I have lost 12 lbs. which is 6 % of my starting weight. It has allowed me to follow a healthy 1300 calorie diet without the cravings that tend to make people give up. It is paired with a program called Scale Down which provides a smart scale that sends your weight each day to a monitoring site that gives you feedback about your progress and motivating hints that help keep you focused on your weight loss goal. The only side effect I have noticed is constipation that I am dealing with by eating “power pudding” (unprocessed bran, unsw. applesauce and prune juice). The quality of my sleep has actually improved giving me more energy to walk and exercise regularly. Although I would have preferred to lose this weight using just a healthful diet and exercise, it just was not happening and Contrave has helped me to achieve a slow, steady weight loss.
