When readers report that they are addicted to ice, it sends off alarm signals for us. Craving ice like this (quite different from preferring a little ice in your drinking water) is often linked to mineral deficiencies, especially iron or zinc. It is important to get to the root of the problem and correct it. The deficiency can cause serious health concerns. For example, cracking ice with the teeth can damage them. What’s more, the cause of the deficiency may also be dangerous. Doctors should investigate what is driving this behavior.
What Does Craving Ice Mean?
Q. I used to crave ice just like a drug addict. The first thing in the morning I had to have it. I would get a large soft drink and ask for extra ice. The pop didn’t matter to me–it was the ice I wanted.
When I saw my doctor for a check up because I felt tired and short of breath, a test showed that I was severely anemic, with a blood count of six. My physician was so concerned that he called me at home the next evening and told me not to exert myself in any way until they did further testing.
This had happened so gradually that I didn’t realize I was slowly bleeding to death. Further tests showed I had an iron deficiency caused by extremely heavy periods. Iron supplements quickly brought my count up to normal ranges, and my cravings for ice went away immediately. They never returned, though it has been many years.
Correcting the Deficiencies That Lead to Cravings:
A. Mineral deficiencies can result in unusual cravings, whether for ice, cornstarch, clay or even popcorn. In addition to the heavy menstrual bleeding our reader had experienced, people who donate blood frequently sometimes develop cravings for ice or other substances (Transfusion, April 2017). Other causes may include pregnancy or unsuspected intestinal bleeding. Doctors are more likely to suspect iron deficiency in women, but men too may develop an ice addiction if they are anemic (Blood Cells, Molecules & Diseases, July 2019).
Anyone who discovers such a craving should ask their health care provider to test iron or zinc levels (Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Feb. 2016). Usually, as in your case, correcting the deficiency banishes the craving. This is especially important for children who may be eating paint chips, since their craving could lead to lead poisoning (Australian Family Physician, 2017).
Bea remarked:
“I was addicted to chewing ice. I also had terrible restless legs. About 25 years ago I tried to donate blood and my iron was extremely low. They told me to go to the doctor. Once my iron was back up where it belonged, both problems went away. I occasionally still get restless legs, but that only happens when I am very tired or lacking sleep. A good night’s sleep takes care of it.”
Craving ice in this way is classified as “pica” by doctors. In some regions of the country, people don’t find it unusual to crave clay or cornstarch.
TA’s description of her habit sounds a lot like addiction:
“I am 26 years old as of today. I started to eat cornstarch when I was 16. At first I ate a box every three weeks, but now I’m eating it through a straw and I’m up to a box a day. I know that this is abnormal and hurting me because I do not use the restroom as often as I should.
“I eat it even when I don’t want it, yet I can’t stop. My mom eats it as well. Can you please help me and tell me what it is that I can do in order to stop because it’s messing up my teeth and I’m gaining weight?”
We strongly recommend to TA and others struggling with this problem that they be checked for iron or zinc deficiency and take any supplements that are prescribed or recommended.

I’ve been eating ice since I was 10, and now I’m 43. Even my mouth is sore, my jaw hurts, and my tongue is sore. I still can’t stop eating it I wake up craving it. I go to sleep craving it. I carry a bag of ice around with me everywhere I go. I spend a lot of money and a lot of time on ice. Sometimes I eat ice instead of food. Sometimes my tongue hurts from eating ice so much that I can’t eat food. My food can’t be too hot; nothing spicy cuz my tongue is so sensitive. I also crave steam. I like to sit in the bathroom with the hot water running and eat ice. My walls are bubbling up. It’s a shame. I want to stop but I can’t. I do have Pica and am anemic.

I crave popsicles all the time. I even wake up in the middle of the night wanting one. I go through boxes of the ice pops. It was when I started having shortness of breath and chest tightness that I found out I have a severe iron deficiency anemia. I will start IV iron infusions next week. Hopefully that will help.

I had ice craving for years. Eventually diagnosed with celiac. Was terribly anemic and developed osteoporosis. Wish I had known to explore for root cause of craving.

My pica craving was cauliflower and radishes. I would eat a head of cauliflower a day. Then I began to get very tired to the point of barely being able to get out of bed, and nearly fainting on walks. I learned after a physical that I was iron deficient caused by very heavy periods. Iron supplements worked a miracle. The craving went away overnight.

I crave snow and can even tell the difference in flavor of fallen snow throughout the winter season. Living in Alaska I’m able to indulge 7-8 months out of the year, and in the summer I chew on ice. I never thought twice about it until a recent trip to our local glacier lake, and I caught myself wanting to eat the fine silt in the lake. A google search about that strange craving landed me here, so I think I’m going to get a blood test and see if something is going on. Thank you!

I crave baking soda. Its the craziest thing ever. I eat it through a straw. I have tried to stop. Only can go for a week I start thinking about it. I hide my obsession because I’m ashamed, the only side effects I’ve had wasa little water retention.

I had my teeth repaired recently. Shortly after, I began grinding my teeth, and then started to crave ice. I told my talk therapy lady, and she said there is nothing wrong with chewing ice. Well, I actually chew ice cubes from the freezer, whole cubes. I am in the freezer glomming on ice like an addict. I’ve had restless legs for some time. Cant sleep, and I have the same dream every night. Now my hair is falling out!! Brittle nails, the whole deal. I made an appt with my dr for tomorrow. Thank you for your page!!!

I was seriously addicted to eating or sucking on ice. It lasted over a few years where it was so extreme my family would call me the ice lady or the ice woman. My marriage broke up I was extremely anorexic although we did not know this then, I went from a normal functioning mother of five, to a zombie barely making it through the day. I went from 95 kilos to 37 kilos in less than 8 months and I didn’t even realise it. I never drink water ever and still don’t but I was addicted to the ice. Id eat 6 grains of cooked white rice, 2 fruit loop rings and cups full of ice every day. I’d go to Mc’Donalds and just ask for large cups of ice no food no drinks just 2 large cups of ice. I’d just crunch away on my ice all the time. Eventually my family stepped in I mean I could barely function id sleep all the time, always worn out always tired, no energy, unable to eat never drinking, barely able to even wee because my body had shrunk so much. I went to a doctor and I weighed in at 37 kilos I had extreme anemia so badly I had to have blood transfusions. Over a couple of years getting treatment I had almost 200 blood transfusions, iron infusions, and iron injections every other month, finally they worked out I had leukaemia which is why I couldn’t hold iron within my body. Its ten years later, I’m still unwell at times, my iron levels drop easily because I still have an eating disorder, although I look fat to anyone who sees me so no one knows, I weigh 56 kilos so people cant see it I can get away with it very easily. I don’t eat ice now but every now and then I feel like doing it and do for a few days but usually convince myself not to have any around other people. You cant let this rule your life like I did u must seek help, luckily I did or I would have just died in the end. My problem was extreme stress from everything that was happening in my life that I was no longer so badly controlled by a husband I took my control back by making it about food that I didn’t even realise what was going on it wasn’t about being fat it was all about being in control of something anything so I couldn’t be abused anymore. Iron deficiency was definitely why I was so consumed with ice because as I said earlier I do not ever drink water since maybe 20 years ago. But ice was a must have. anyone doing this please get yourself checked by a doctor my iron problem was so bad because I had leukaemia if the doctors hadn’t been trying to cure my iron deficiency it might have gone undiagnosed for who knows how long.

I have been addicted to shaved and crushed ice for 38 years. It has gotten worse over the years because I have had 2 blood transfusions. I have been prescribed iron pills. But I believe it is in my mind that I still want shaved ice. I am getting to the point that I don’t want sonic ice or any other ice that is not shaved. I believe that I am now severely anemic because I am experiencing headaches and feeling lightheaded. My doctor has informed me that my levels are really low. I now have to go back for lab testing. My biggest problem is I am too addicted to the shaved ice.

I started craving ice about 2-3 months ago. The only other time I’ve ever craved ice was while I was pregnant with my son, 18 years ago. I had a full hysterectomy over 2 years ago so it’s surely not a heavy menstrul thing for me and I don’t donate blood. I literally go to Sonic or have my husband stop on the way home just to get ice.
I don’t even want the beverage, just the ice! I have never had a problem with iron or zinc but I am getting a full physical in 3 weeks so hopefully they can figure something out. I’ve been thinking it might be due to stress as my son graduated from high school in June and just left for college and I will be graduating from college at the end of next week. I hope this is all it is.

I crave ice constantly. I have had full blood tests done and everything is in normal range. This started avout 6 months ago. My teeth are not in good shape and I was concerned this is going to start breakage. I purchased a tabletop ice maker that makes small bullet shaped soft ice. The craving has increased. My Dr. has no ideas what is causing this.

I am 47 and have suffered with PCOS, hypermenhorragia, and anemia for years. On top of that I am diabetic also. I have in the last 2 years become so addicted to ice that it drives me crazy. Without a glass of ice available I feel like my mouth is super dry and I am dying of thirst. I have been suffering from excessive menstrual bleeding, but my insurance says a hysterectomy isn’t needed. Last blood screening said my iron was finally up to 12. Not sure what is going to happen, but what ever it is I hope it happens soon.

I eat a whole bag of McDonalds ice every single day. I think it’s about 8 pounds of ice. It wasn’t so bad until recently when I started taking blood thinners to prevent blood clots. The blood thinners make my already heavy period about ten times worse, I bleed so much I go through a pad and a tampon every 45 minutes to an hour for the first five days.
I went to the doctor and she told me I am severely anemic and they need to do more testing but she recommends I get a test to stop my periods because it takes three months to rebuild the iron supply and with me bleeding the way I have been my iron supply has not been able to replenish itself.
In the meantime, I started taking iron pills but am still eating about 7 pounds of ice per day. I also eat a bottle of baby powder each week. This is driving me crazy. I simply can’t live without the ice or the baby powder, I have both as soon as I wake up and all through the day.

I’ve been eating and craving ice for about 20 years. I started when I was severely anemic from bleeding ulcers. I still crave and eat all day long every day. My teeth are in bad shape, too. But I can stop. It’s the only thing I must have. I’m an addict. I literally panic if I run out. I have rheumatoid arthritis, and my stomach usually hurts from the medication I have to take. Ice is the only thing that helps.

Hi, Christina,
My craving for ice started about 4months ago, and I also have to have it all day every day. I will order cups of ice only no soda when I go to fast food places. I take ice to work with me. I have a huge cup I fill to take to bed. I’ve got fibromyalgia and arthritis. I choose ice over cigarettes and I’ve been smoking for 40yrs. Time to see my Dr.

Hello. I started craving ice when I was about 31 after I had my son. My doctor told me it was Pica. He checked my iron, and it was low. I stopped craving for a number of years. Now I’m 53, and the cravings have returned. I have sickle cell anemia, so I am anemic. I’m gonna get my iron checked again, because the cravings are getting worse. I like the ice to be like snow, and I have a machine that makes it perfect (when my husband does it lol). Thanks for listening.

I am being treated with Phlebotomy / Blood letting for Polycythemia. Side effect to the Phlebotomy treatments is that I am now craving ice, like crazy. I now realize that I am going from one extreme to the other- (Polycythemia- too much blood) to now being anemic (the insane ice cravings!).
I never would’ve connected my weird symptoms, all on my own, ** I am under the continued care of a Primary Care Phys., plus a Specialist in Blood Cancer Disorders (for the Polycythemia) It is VERY IMPORTANT to realize as early on as possible when something does not “feel right” with your health. Ask your drs questions and continue to educate yourselves.

Numb Tongue

My husband used to annoy me crunching his tortilla chips, so my solution was to crunch ice to block his chewing sounds. BIGGEST addiction for me now ever. Since 2016 eating ice is preferred over anything else. At night if I know there is more ice I will go eat it all. My favorite ice is Jimmy John’s and Sonic, then Caribou. My family enables me and bring me ice like an offering and it is much appreciated, but my habit has caused me to have numb lips and tongue, and miss hearing a speaker due to the crunching. My dentist said no problems yet, but it can cause micro fractures in the teeth. This site looks promising, if there is help it would benefit me greatly.

Hi I’m 41 & I can’t stop eating ice. I eat about 6 cups a day. I buy a 5Kg bag of ice every 3 day’s. I don’t have low iron or suffer from anemia. I’m so addicted to ice it’s not funny. I have aa mallet & I beat the ice until it’s like snow & i put it back in the freezer & then every time I want a cup. I just scoop up a cup. Is it bad for you to eat so much ice a day?? Sometimes I would skip breakfast or lunch & have a cup of ice instead. My husband & kids think I’m crazy. My Dr doesn’t understand why I’m like this either. All my Dr said was to reduce the amount & slowly I won’t want it anymore. But I can’t. No matter how hard I try. I just can’t. I’m like a kid in a lolly shop, except it’s ice. Gosh I hope someone can help me.

I love ice. Especially sonic ice. I mean, who DOESNT like sonic ice?
Lately I’ve needed ice like a drug. I fiend for it. It’s 1:45am and I begged my wife to take me to the gas station. Sonic ice is soft. I get more of a thrill by hearing myself crunch which is why I get it from gas stations.
Blood has always been fine. But this is the WORST I’ve ever craved ice. I’m losing my mind.

I had a severe craving for ice and ate a giant bag of it every two days , and was very anemic . I was given an intravenous treatment for the anemia , something that looked like geritol , for two weeks , at the hospital. The first treatment completely took away all desire for ice and I felt like a brand new person . I went in every day , for two weeks to recieve intravenous iron , vitamin and minerals mix that dripped into my vein . I was transformed by this and felt like I was brand new . The previous doctors I still see ,never mentioned such a treatment , even knowing of my severe chronic anemia . I found a different doctor and she knew just what to do .

I’m 43 years old and a mother of two (19 and 5.) I have been diagnosed with BiPolar Type II, Generalized Anxiety Disorder with Agoraphobia, and OCD. Five years ago, while pregnant with my daughter, an ER doctor told me I was addicted to water. I was going thru at least a gallon every day. I don’t have the issues with water anymore, but now I’ve turned to ice. (It’s been going on for about 3-4 months.) I have a 32 oz plastic cup that I fill until it’s mounded with crushed ice chips and add sugar free drink mix and just enough water to get it wet (usually about 1/2 c). I have no problems eating the entire cup in about 30-45 minutes, especially when watching tv or reading. I can easily go thru a 7 lb bag of ice in a day this way. I’ve had issues with anemia since I was born, however, my last bloodwork showed everything was normal.

I too have been diagnosed with fatty liver disease. It’s only in the last 2-3 months that I’ve craved the ice. I am 48, overweight, and always exhausted! I have gotten to the point that I literally dread leaving the house and only do it if I have to. My husband brings me ice when he comes home and I’m like an addict waiting for it to get here! I also have been having the strangest sense of smell.
I smell bleach constantly and other times my sense of smell is so heightened that I can’t even eat what we’ve cooked for dinner because the smell is overwhelming. Chicken is also hit or miss for me lately, some days it’s fine and other days the texture is enough to make me sick to my stomach. Any thoughts from anyone would be greatly appreciated! So, I know I’m severely anemic. Not only is my blood count low but so is my iron. Iron supplements (for some reason) will not absorb into my blood stream. Because of that I used to have to go to the cancer center near my house to receive iron infusions.
But even that has its bad side effects. I used to do that 2 times a week. I am vegetarian but we have ruled my diet out of the equation because I have only been vegetarian for 2 years yet I have been this way almost all my life. I eat ice 24/7. But it has to be “cloudy crushed iced” bc it’s easier to chew. I don’t like “clear ice “.
I know it sounds odd. I’ve eaten ice for like 10 years. I don’t mind it bc it isn’t harming me but I’m concerned with why I crave it soooo much. No doctor can explain it to me… what do I do?

I went through this exact same thing. I am a severe type1 diabetic, and my entire day would revolve around making sure I had bought cups in the freezer of the same cloudy soft ice you’re talking about. I ended up with the iron transfusions at a cancer center plus red blood transfusions. My iron deficiency got a little better for a few years and is now back to where I started. I have incorporated red meat back into my diet trying to help this, and yet it still isn’t working. I don’t know any more what to do.

I am exactly like you. It has to be the cloudy ice and every morning I check my “supply” of crushed ice in the freezer. It got so bad my husband bought me an ice crusher online. It’s the greatest, crushes it to small pieces so easier to chew. I, to am anemic. I take 2 B-12 shots a month but that hasn’t taken away my cravings at all. I wish I could get over this. I have fibroid and been craving bacon bits all the time. I have been eating the McCormick bacon chips a bottle a day. I love the salty and crunchy. Because I eat so much I have bad smelling gas. I’m tired of eating it but I can’t stop. I don’t crave nothing else but this. I need help.

I’m 33 YO, I recently had a baby boy (my second child) and I am an “Ice Addict”. During both pregnancies I craved ice, but my most recent one took it to a whole new level. I even bought a shaved ice machine and was having to buy 5lb bags of ice because the ice bin in my freezer wasn’t able to keep up with the amount I was eating. My son is now 4 months old, and I’m going through a 5lb bag about every 2 days. I can remember eating ice all the way back to 2nd grade and always having problems with my anemia, and my drinks were always filled to the top with ice with a little beverage in my cup. I even prefer ice from Sonic or the soft ice you can buy by the bag.
My stomach is always bloated. I have issues with heartburn and digestion, as well as bathroom infrequency. I have begun to go a little more often, as I have begun to eat frozen fruit as well. My sleeping habits are horrible. I’m lethargic and drowsy during the day, but when it becomes night times I can’t fall asleep until around 1:00am. With an infant and a toddler I wake up throughout the night and get up super early. I’ve continued to take my prenatal vitamins and my B12 with still no increase in energy levels. Any help would be appreciated!!!

Wow, it’s like reading about my own life! I wish I knew what was wrong with us! I had my daughter almost 4 years ago now and started craving ice when I was pregnant with her. During labor they determined I was anemic so started me on iron supplements. The craving went away. I did really good until recently and I have to have it all the time!
My dentist is not thrilled about it. I talked to my doctor and she tested my iron but it came back normal. I still crave ice though, I don’t know what’s wrong! I don’t think this is normal! Also am tired frequently and am not a morning person. I stay up too late and could take several naps during the day if my schedule allows it. This much of it has been going on for several years though. I do have hypothyroidism that I take medication for, the lowest dosage I believe.
That started when I was pregnant with her as well. I am on antidepressants as well as Adderall in the AM. I am still tired. I get restless leg syndrome in the late afternoons into the evenings, not everyday but several days a week. I no longer have periods because I had a hysterectomy in June. Haven’t bled since. I think the cravings started after my surgery. Recently started cymbalta with my Adderall in the mornings and clonodine at night.
Also have to take Ibuprofin several times a day for chronic generalized pain. Mostly hips and low back. Feels like my joints are aching like when your body hurts when you get the flu a little. Ibuprofin keeps it at bay. Also have to take acid reducers several times a week. Pretty sure I have PCOS. Have had acne since the 3rd grade and am 33 now. Also dark hairs randomly popping out on my chin and neck area. They took everything but my ovaries. I had Essure for 3 years. Only way to remove it properly.

For those of you who get constipated from iron supplements, you might give taking Turmeric capsules a try. Turmeric is a spice that CAN help relieve inflammation, which is why I initially tried it. However, the recommended doses for inflammation gave me really loose bowels, so I dropped back to taking only 1 capsule a day. At this level it keeps my bowels moving very well, soft but not runny. I think it works better than any stool softener or laxative I’ve ever taken! So try taking 1 or 2 capsules a day with your iron supplement and see if it helps.

Hi,
I have craved & eaten ice for over twenty years now & just thought I’d Google why I may do this. I’ve recently had blood tests done & I’m borderline anaemic. I have also suffered from restless legs for some years now. I see on here that others have too. I’m going to increase my iron intake through food as much as I caneed & see if this helps with the cravings, I hope so as my teeth & gums are really suffering.

Consider adding more vitamin C rich foods along with the increased iron rich foods so that the iron will be properly absorbed.
Marilyn
I consume crushed ice all day and after reading these other stories, feel that it is not just an low iron problem. I also (just this week) noticed my legs ache and are so tired. Since my blood work came back ‘normal’, I am worried it could be something else. What kind of tests should I ask for?

wow, now I feel more relieved to know that I’m not the only with ice cravings, but its scary at the same time since I have HBP already. I find out, that I would crave more ice when I feel stressed out and anxious. I will get my blood checked for anemia and my kidneys too to find out what is exactly going on. Thanks everyone for sharing. This forum very informative and helpful.

Hello everyone. I have been anemic for years and eat ice all day long. I went for an iron infusion but it didn’t help much. Thanks to my gasterologist he had discovered that my villi in my stomach isn’t performing it’s duty. It’s called lymphangiectasia. So after doing blood tests they found that not only is my iron low but all my immunoglobulins are low. Meaning that I have a compromised immune system. My doctor is worried about me having transfusions of blood because it might cause anephiletic shot. SO as it stands I am still chewing ice (drives my husband crazy). You guys should tell your docs to check your immunoglobulin levels as well….be well

if you are going to keep chewing ice, like i do, after blood transfusions and supplements, please buy an ice crusher or snow cone machine so you don’t end up losing your teeth! There are several on amazon and plenty of other places. And your husband will appreciate less crunching noise, too!

I also have to eat alot of ice I have taken liquid iron and copper it has helped but I stopped due to the alcohol in it so I began taking black root tonic it is high in iron and helps heal liver and kidneys. I have gone through 4 blood transfusions to extreme anemia my levels kept going down to 5.8 or 6.7 hymaglobyn.
I bleed heavily on my moon time and get huge blood clots and my uterus expands the size of a soccer ball and is painful what my doctor did is give me provera to stop the bleeding for 3 months to trick my body to believe it is going through menopause it helps but what I know is that taking that black root tonic has helped me alot I havent had a cup of ice in about 3 weeks.
See your gynecologist sometimes you have to get a dnc from the fibroids in your uterus they are blood feeders and as long as their in there you will always be anemic.. I am 50 they wanted to take out my uterus I said heck no , no way I want it in there i am taking herbs and tincures to help me but also the only pharmacy drug I take is Provera.

North Palm Beach,
I have been eating and craving ice for over 6 months. It can’t be any ice either. I don’t like the ice my ice maker makes but I found this ice machine and the ice is kind of soft. I get a 16lb bag every 4 days. I am 59 years old. My primary has ordered blood work since last December. I have always had vein issues. When I had my hysterectomy at 23 I woke up and the IV was in my neck. I have a prescription for a pic line so they can get blood. I keep falling down without any warning or dizziness. Each fall is worse. I’m really starting to get hurt. Constantly hitting my head. I need answers.

I have been anemic for about four years and within the past year I just cannot get enough ice. I have to have it every single part of the day. I’m on dialysis and I’m very limited with my Fluid intake but I just cannot help it I don’t necessarily drink a lot of water I just chew on ice.
I also have very severe dry mouth because I take different medications that say can cause dry mouth so I’m going to check with my Kidney Doctor next week to see if there’s something I can take for the dry mouth. Plus I also have this craving for the smell of newspapers, or new books and magazines. It’s like I get a high from it or I just makes me relaxed. I don’t eat paper but I just can’t keep from smelling it and this is just been within the past year or so and I’m 54 but I’ve never in the past have had any crazy cravings like that. Does anybody else have the same problem with the scent of certain things?

I crave camphor, eucalyptus, or lavender oils. I can see the smell of the ink on books and newspapers being addictive. Just not strong enough. I go for intense smells like Camphor. Its so strange. I will eat the ice and smell a rag full of essential oil at the same time. So strange. I have done this since I was 19, started with vicks vapor rub and ice, and I am now 41 and graduated to the really strong scents. My teeth started getting loose and giving me so much sensitivity, I have made myself stop with the ice in the last 2 months, and just smell the oils.

I have been craving ice also, like a drug and sleeping a lot, which is not normal for me. I went to the doctors and my kidneys are stressed out, not detoxing my body like it should. It started right after I got an CT with contrast, which might have damaged my kidneys a little. I would ask everyone’s doctor about getting your kidney functions tested as soon as possible.

I have been craving Ice since my first child, it has been a little over 13 years. Morning, noon, night., at the grocery store, in the car, at work. No matter where I go, I have my big sturdy cup of crushed ice with me. Now, my ice has to be crushed. I take a bag at home, put a lot of ice in it and just crush it up. I cant help it. I just want it all the time.
My doctor and others say it is due to low iron, and I have found that to be true. Iron pills make me constipated, so I can’t take them and stool softener doesn’t help. Well, they take too long to start working. I would go a week without passing a bowel movement if I take those iron pills; that just causes too much discomfort.
My doctor wanted 3 day then told me to try two or one a day and I did and still doesn’t work. So, I just stopped. I have also heard that ice cravings can be due to a lack of sexual intercourse. I am celibate and plan to stay that way now until I get married, (if that ever happens) LOL. However wanted to know, has anyone else heard about ice cravings being due to lack of sexual intercourse?

I too eat ice alot when I say a lot, I mean a lot. It scares me the amount of ice I consume on a daily basis. Sometimes the back of my throat would get sore from eating ice.
I eat ice raw rice. I would light the matches and when it’s all burnt out I’ll eat it. I eat baby powder and also iI eat alot of coal.
I am scared to visit my doctor because I know something is wrong for me to be craving all of these non-nutritional items….

I too have just recently started craving crushed ice. My blood work’ they say’ is all normal. I did not know about the kidney relation….knew about it being pica. The only other time I craved ice was when I was pregnant.
What is concerning after reading this, is my legs have started aching and are weak. It is painful to walk up the stairs. Now how would the ice problem affect my legs? Anybody know?

In September 2010, I also developed an insatiable desire to chew ice from the moment I woke up until I went to bed. I was extremely tired and losing weight without any effort. What prompted me to seek medical attention was an unexplained lump with a bruise that was not caused by injury and did not hurt. To make a long story short, I found I had chronic myelogenous leukemia. Might be worth having your white blood count checked when you see your physician. My ice craving resolved as soon as my health was restored.

I have a craving of ice, I would eat ten or more cups a day. If I tried to restrain myself I would find myself moving my mouth as if I had it. When I wake in the morning I crave ice, through out the day I crave ice, when I’m stressed it calms me. Wish I could stop because I feel as if I’m an addict and ICE is my drug.

Hi there, I have also been having the same problems with ice craving. I am a championship dancer, and during competitions, I feel I can’t keep up and my chest is throbbing and I can’t breath. My muscles get tired very quickly, even after walking a short way. My legs get that restless feeling as well. My eyebrows and eyelashes fall out, and I look like Casper without the makeup. Had tests done and my count was 4.3.
The doctor put me onto Ferromed and I have been taking it for 27 days now. Dancing a competition tomorrow morning (thankfully the last one) and all I am hoping for is that I can keep up.

I have this very same problem …I’m a 23 years old Male and I usually ate a lot of soil but the craving gave birth to eating a lot of ice….like I would eat more than 3 cup fulls of ice in a day ….. It’s beginning to give me concern now. I definitely do need help. Which iron deficiency pills or meds should I take?

You need to ask a doctor to work you up to find out why you might be low in iron or zinc. It is unusual for a young man to have iron deficiency, so it would be good to find out why.

I found myself eating glass full of ice that increases each day. Even in the winter I crave ice. I would be in bed under the blanket eating ice. I starting getting restless leg or my arm just feels like I have to move or the feelings are just strange. I have numb pain in the bottom of my heel to the sole of my feet. I cramp in the leg so badly it would wake me at nights screaming in pain which makes my leg muscles sore for days. I went to the Dr who took blood and was told I am severely anemia. We are going to discuss my treatment options.

Wow I was so surprised to see I was not the only one craving ice. My sister looked this up and called me right away. She thought I was being silly eating ice like I am. I also eat popcorn every night. But the ice thing was making me crazy. I have eaten so much ice that my toung is raw. Freezer burn I call it. Lol Dozens of large containers of ice a day . I can’t stand to go to the store because I can’t eat the ice like I do at home. All winter I freeze my fingers diging in the ice. Lol. The person that said it is like being a addict is right on. I am setting fighting it. Because my toung is so sore.
Well this last Wednesday I went to the doctor because I have been feeling so bad. I have had a lot 14 deaths in the last 5 years between my husband family and mine. Plus my father passed away from cancer . My sister had to have both breast removed because of cancer. Then my husband found out in January that he had stage 4 lung cancer. Then a month ago they found a tumor on my son’s face. It was removed yesterday and is not cancer. Praise God. So I just related all my systems to depression.
I have RLS also and it has been getting worse. Short of breath tiredness so weak. Chest pains. Bad breath dry mouth. I do not have periods but have been having a bad discharge for months.
So when the doctor sent me for blood test for anemia I thought what the world. But she said that most of my system was because of low blood. Still waiting on the results. But I am so glad to know I am not the only one.

I drive my family and coworkers crazy with my ice addiction. I’m 47 and have craved chewing ice since I was a teenager. The ice chewing gets worse when I’m stressed. It’s amazing I haven’t broken my teeth yet. I’ve always had heavy periods and low energy. A Red Cross nurse told me I was too anemic to give blood but I never made the connection between iron deficiency and craving ice. Recently I decided to try consuming molasses ( as a home remedy for a different ailment) and literally overnight I felt so much better and no longer had the ice cravings! It was a pleasant side benefit. I also noticed the dark circles under my eyes disappeared and my gray hair was less noticeably gray. I didn’t have to consume molasses every day for these benefits, I take it maybe three times a week. I didn’t eat molasses straight from the jar I would put a tablespoon full in my almond milk, stir it, then drink it like chocolate milk. Very tasty and an excellent source of iron.

I too, find the gin and raisin “cure” very helpful. The ABC store clerk said we needed to purchase the “top shelf” gin to get the beneficial juniper berry extract. I had “googled” gin so had brands to ask for. We bought the One in the green bottle. This really works for us. Not only does it relieve pain but found it gives me energy. This was a pleasant surprise since I have pernicious anemia.

I too was addicted to chewing ice, so bad to the point that when we were out (we only have one car) I would be a nervous wreck thinking about how I was going to get my ice. I work at a hospital as a phlebotomist and the nurses pulled me aside and were looking me over, when I told them my hgb was a 7.6 they were infuriated that my doctor didn’t take me out of work.
Anyway that very night, March 28, 2016 I was admitted to the er and was given two pints of blood. I went to a hematologist who did iron studies and I then found out that my iron was a THREE (the lowest an iron should be is 20) so they called me at home and told me to get to the office right away I needed iron infusions. I was told I would need six, so far I have had five and my last one is on Monday, or at least I hope it’s my last one.
In a month’s time (May 16,2016 to be exact) I will have more iron studies done to see how well the infusions helped. I can honestly say I do feel better but only by about 80% but the ice cravings…… GONE!!!! The doctors are still trying to figure out why my iron is going so low and if I am losing blood somewhere, hemocults came back negative, maybe it’s just from heavy periods.
But if you have ice cravings, feel like a worn out dish rag, tired all the time, pale, dizzy, shortness of breath, chest pain, always cold, losing your hair, finger nail beds are blue, have a lump in your throat that makes it excruciating to eat, please go see your doctor, these are all the symptoms I had. You don’t need all of those symptoms at all to have low iron, the biggest one that would be a give away I would say is the pica (the craving of non nutritional items, such as ice, clay, corn starch, dirt, chalk etc) if this fits your situation, make an appointment, this is a life threatening condition if not caught in time. God bless you all.

Stay on top of those Dr.s Toby, it is very important that you do. In an eight hour shift I would chew 7 large (movie theater size) glasses of ice and then have more when I got home from work. I thought it was just a habit of chewing ice but it turns out I am severely anemic, my iron level went to a THREE the lowest an iron should be is a twenty. Sometimes you have no symptoms when it comes to anemia however don’t let it catch up to you, it’s horrible what you have to go through. Good luck to you Toby.

I literally eat 24 or more ice trays a day. If I don’t have it I swear I have some kind of mental breakdown like a drug addict. It’s insane how much ice I eat all day. I used to have a deep freezer, and I would buy bags of ice and eat 5 bags in one day. My teeth are awful now but I must have ice from the time I wake up, even in really cold weather. I will wake up throughout the night just to go eat an ice tray. It is so awful to have this addiction!

Be sure to ask your doctor to check for a zinc or iron deficiency. Correcting the deficiency can solve the addiction.

So, I have been anemic for a while. I am 47 years of age. I chew ice constantly and it annoys my husband. I tried iron supplements, BUT (no pun intended) my stomach bloated and yes I was constipated. I am exhausted and out of breath. I even tried the Ferrous Sequels that my doctor recommended to help with absorption. It did not work so I stopped and look as if I am pregnant. I started to have dark under eye circles and really bad bruising that I know is a contributing factor. I had a Hysterectomy in 2001 and am not going through Menopause yet. My doctor told me that my next step is going to a Hematologist. I have damaged my teeth as a result of the need for chewing ice. I am truly sorry to see so many people are going through the same thing.

I have severe, chronic anemia due to Gastric Bypass surgery. I don’t absorb all the vitamins/minerals in food or in vitamin form. I’ve had restless legs for many years but the anemia really kicks it into high gear. Along with the crushed ice, I also crave lightly salted rice cakes. During the anemia spells, that’s about all I eat. I’ve had numerous blood transfusions, iron infusions, even injections of Procrit. My Hemotologist said Procrit is normally for cancer patients. As I write this, I’m watching the clock as I have an appointment to get a new type of iron infusion that works better & faster than the previous kind.

I’m 55 years old, and I have been diagnosed with chronic anemia. I haven’t had a period in over a year, so I guess I’m going through menopause. However, I crave ice also. I was taking iron supplements but stopped, now I have to start taking them again. I chew ice cube, but loves it shaved, so much so that I actually bought an ice shaver so that I can shave it. My cravings are so strong that I actually fantasize of eating snow, just like someone on here said that they do also. And, just like they do, whenever I see snow on TV, all I can think about is eating it with a spoon. I too, live in a warm climate where it doesn’t snow, and I pray for snow, every year. We have snow ball stands everywhere, but I don’t think about the flavors, just the shaved ice. I thought I was the only one that suffers from this, but I see that many more do too. That’s a relief in a way, to know that I am not alone, and that I’m not just some crazy ice craver. Lol.

Wow! This is crazy reading all your stories. I craved ice with all 3 of my pregnancies, and never took prenatal vitamins because they gave me headaches. My OB said I was fine as long as I ate properly, and never thought anything of it. But I stopped craving the ice after each child was born. But the past year or so, I HAVE to have my ice. I have my tumbler cup with me absolutely everywhere I go. Before I leave the house, I fill it with the skinny long cubes and run some water over it so it starts to break down so it’s easier to chew. All day long. I’m 43 and haven’t had my period in a month, which I’m assuming i’m starting menopause or perimenopausal, since I’m usually regular and regular flows, but for the past 2 years my cycles have been getting a little wacky. My Mother, recently was diagnosed with hereditary hemochromatosis, which is basically an iron overload. Her Dr said that my sister and I should be tested for it as well. I’m thinking with my ice craving, which can be a symptom of anemia, and the hereditary hemochromatosis, I should even out. ha ha.

Kristina, you should get tested. The hemochromatosis might be throwing your system out of kilter and contributing to the problem.

For me two things started at nearly the same time-craving ice and heavy period flow. I talked to my doctor about the flow issue since that was new for me and she did a sonogram and found fruit sized fibroids. The benign muscle masses pressing on my uterus were causing this flow issue and the resulting chaos in my body from rapid blood loss each month. I will be having surgery to have them removed. I will kinda miss the ice.

I’ve been anemic for quite sometime, I was having heavy long periods, then break through bleeding on birth control, I was diagnosed with pcod, uterine fibroids, I was given iron supplements that wasn’t helping, I often craved for shaved ice, but after having chest pain I thought was a heart attack I was rushed to the E.R after lab work the Dr. Informed me I was in need of a blood transfusion immediately. After the transfusion, I lost my cravings for ice for about a year, but it picked up again almost over a year. I was doing iron transfusions to keep my anemia under control only to have it come back worse. I buy bags of ice which I’m going through within 2days. When I awake in the A.M I eat it through out the day and through the night. My daughters are so irritated by it.
I have heart palpitations, dizziness, chest pain sometimes, headache, weakness, I make appointments to see my DR. But I never make it due to no transportation, my gums are constantly bleeding while brushing, I’ve been eating kale, broccoli, spinach, taking black strap molasses and none of it helps anymore. I have quite a few underlying medical problems that I have had for a long time & my DR. Doesn’t address them which will help with the bleeding.

As I’m reading this I am busy eating my crushed ice. When I don’t eat them is like I am having withdrawal symptoms and then I rush to the fridge to get it. My daughters are disgusted by this but I cant help it. I know I have iron deficiency and I was on treatment for six months and then I stopped. I decided to take it upon myself to start again. Its been a week since I started and I realised my craving for ice is subsiding bit by bit. But hey I’m happy I am not the only one …

I crave ice worse then a crack head craves crack. I gotta have it as soon as i wake up. The ice machine cant keep up so i buy bagged ice. I don’t care if its cub, crushed, or shaved. I will eat it anyway i can get it. About ten pounds a day. I also crave the frost. I do feel tired and my whole body aches but haven’t had a period in over 7 months. I have given blood 2 times and they haven’t said anything about my blood count being low. I have also been having some stomach issues and weight loss. Not sure what the problem is but have no insurance or money to go to the doctor.o

I am anemic, and when I don’t take my iron supplement, I crave ice. I crave it crushed and shave mostly, but will chew cubes, etc. I even fantasize about eating snow. I live in a warm climate, and when I see other places on the tube that has lots of snow, all I can think about is eating it. That’s how strong my cravings are. We have lots of snowball stands, but I don’t care about the flavors, just the shaved ice. I haven’t been taking the iron supplements for a while, and the cravings have returned, so I guess I will have to visit my doctor again, and start with the supplements again.

I was anemic due to lots of nosebleeds and heavy periods but o didn’t find out until I passed out at school one day. I had been chewing ice for two years and I constantly got in trouble during class for my loud crunching but I literally could not stop. I couldn’t play sports for a semester while I brought my iron count up. I’m back to normal now but my teeth and gums are still pretty sensitive from the years of chewing ice.

I never made the ice connection. I only just realized I was Anemic when I got really weak on vacation during an extremely heavy period. I nearly passed out and the weakness lingered. I bought iron supplements and noticed modest improvement each day. My daughter gets so aggravated at me for chewing ice but I couldn’t control myself. Boy is she relieved that this addiction may soon subside.

My addiction to ice seemed funny at the beginning but when I had no control over the cravings I became worried. Still I did nothing much to deal with the cravings. I went to my doctor for heavy periods, he did some blood work and put me on iron supplements. Since taking the supplements the ice addiction has stopped. I was constantly tired, my feet ached and were restless, my eyesight was so blurry that I went to the optician but my sight was fine. I’m only now realizing that all these were as a result of low blood count. Omg! I also know of many other women who has the same problem and I’m gonna be talking to them about all this information I’ve received on here.

Your comments have really made me feel hopeful about my addiction to chewing ice! I work in the medical field so I know the damage it can cause but how do you resist your body’s craving?? It’s so hard, and I know it’s harming me because I’m constantly out of breathe, weak, tired and my vision has been blurred lately. I’ve just got a prescription for iron so hopefully this works!!

I am hopeful after reading your comments on ice chewing. I also have restless leg syndrome and pain from nerve damage which also causes my legs to twitch and jerk. I hear from my doctor that my blood count is normal!! I have hypothyroidism. I also am short of breath and I have no energy. I plan my day in my head but can’t seem to accomplish much. Is the iron a prescription or can it be purchased OTC? Maybe you don’t know. I just called my doctor last week complaining of fatigue. I like my doctor and she listens to my concerns.

I too am severly anemic. I have heavy periods and at first didn’t understand why I took on this crazy addiction for ice. I thought that was an old wives tale. But I crave it like a drug addict craves heroin. If I can’t get it the right consistency I go nuts! I have to have it in the skinny cubes…the chewing and crushing is the best part…the part I am addicted to. I know it is ruining my back teeth because they are becoming so sensitive. I wish I could stop but my hemoglobin is rarely over 7.0…I feel so tired all the time–but not tired enough to not go get ice haha

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I’ve gotten so bad that I cleaned out the bottom of my freezer and pour water on it. Then I let it freeze and then break it up and eat it (I don’t like the big ice cubes, I’d rather have a flatter piece). I also crave the smell if the freezer when the motor is running. I had this same thing when I was pregnant with my daughter, 13 years ago. I am in no way pregnant now, so I’m not sure what’s going on or causing this, all of a sudden, craving. I just gave blood a month ago and everything was normal?? I also have heavy periods and HORRIBLE restless legs (been dealing with those for 20 years). It all seems relative.

At the start #1 pregnancy I chewed ice when the baby was born it stopped, I did this with all 5 children, for the last 6yrs I have to have a bag of ice in the freezer, I smash it up and chew it, I to buy soft drinks and order extra ice, just for the ice, I have had restless legs for yrs and now have a bowel problem. Which I do think is from the ice chewing.
My periods have been heavy for the last 2yrs which I thought was menopause… I’m grateful for the above stories, I’m not the only one chewing ice, but its not a good thing, I have stopped for 3 days and my mouth waters just thinking of it.

I read your post about the ice chewing. I too was chewing ice, for half the year during 2014. I was also very tired all the time. My doctor became very concerned when he discovered how anemic I was in the beginning of July. I was urged to stay home from work until tests could be done as I was also having stomach issues. I didn’t listen and I went to work anyway.
I could not complete the week and ended up in the emergency room. I am male so my blood loss was not caused by a period. The docs put the blood loss and the stomach issues together and decided on an immediate colonoscopy. Stage 2 colon cancer found! Surgery two days later. 6 months later no more cancer and no more chewing of ice. Don’t ignore the stomach issues!!!

I have the same problem as all the above. I have not been to a doctor since my daughter has been born (she is almost 16) because I have not had the money or insurance. I have been anemic before – so I kind of thought that was the problem. I cannot take iron as it makes me very sick. Any suggestions (on over the counter or all natural) as what I can do to raise my blood count? I do NOT like beets, or liver.

Omg I just looked up Iron Defeciency because I was just tested for it and my level is very low. I am 53 and my menstral cycles have just been awful. Huge blood losses each time. Well when I just looked it up I was amazed to see about the chewing ice cravings. I have been doing this for months now and didn’t have a clue why. I am constantly chewing on ice it has really developed into a craving. I was so amazed that all of this was tied together.

I have been craving ice for about 3 years now. I know this is due to an iron deficiency caused by heavy periods, but when taking iron supplements I find myself getting constipated. I was wondering if there was an alternative measure I could try.
The People's Pharmacy
Try ferrous glycinate or iron polysaccharide as a supplement. They are said to be less likely to cause constipation.

I to suffer from the ice craving and was told by my doctor to take iron supplements, but I haven’t taken them because of constipation. My iron level was at 6 the last time it were checked. If you eat liver this could help you.

I’ve been severely anemic for well over 30yrs. It started when I had my daughter at 18. My OBGYN told me that because at 18 my body was still developing, having a child took a lot out of me and took a toll on my system. I have had heavy cycles as well and it wasn’t until I was well into my 30’s that I realized how much I craved ice and it was habitual to say the least. However, not just any ice will do, it has to be crushed or shaved. I don’t like nor will I eat cubes although if I can’t get crushed or shaved, I will place cubes into a plastic bag and crush them with a hammer. It’s like a high when I eat it and I just can’t stop. I’ve been put on iron and have to take it daily which as long as I take it as prescribed, I don’t have any cravings but have found that once I feel better, I slack off of the iron and it starts all over.

I had a friend that had craving for garlic, her parents took her to her doctors. After several blood test they did find out she was anemic. TS I am sorry you had to suffer so much, parents at that time were very ignorant and superstitious DON’T blame them, it was the time and the puritanism views, traditions and cultural poor knowledge of things (every where) some ignorant parents who didn’t know better made horrible mistakes, not many have a ‘thinking open view’ of something medical could be the problem. Thank God we know more today.

I wish somebody had told my parents this 40 years ago. At age 10, I constantly craved ice, just like the writer! I was an early menstruator, starting at the very young age of 10. My parents couldn’t figure out why I crunched ice. Finally, they diagnosed it themselves…they decided this was a suppressed sexual craving. Don’t ask me where that came from, probably their own puritanical church upbringings, because I certainly didn’t have any such cravings; I barely knew the facts of life.
There followed five years of hell, when my parents constantly whispered about me, looked at me with concern but disgust, and openly told me, “there is something wrong with you.” With the help of a therapist, I finally stopped hating myself, but had no idea what caused the ice cravings.
They finally disappeared. I later read this same diagnosis, that it was more than likely caused by a severe anemic deficiency. “Sexual craving.” Geesh, the harm people do their children!

I used to chew ice even though I knew it was bad for teeth. I had heavy periods. Right after I had a hysterectomy I realized I long longer wanted to chew ice. In fact I couldn’t stand chewing ice. It was immediate. I figured it out that the heavy periods may have caused low iron.

I craved ice severely for over a year. I was going to an acupuncture/herbalist at the time. Also my periods were really heavy with my blood count an 8. I boiled fresh beats and ate them and drank the juice. It raised my iron levels quickly.
I took magnesium for almost a year and still craved ice, every day all day long. It was horrible. Then finally I was told to take 1 potassium gluconate 500 mg 2 times a week with the magnesium. Thankfully adding the potassium cured my cravings totally after 3 weeks!

I was the same way… I would eat it non stop.. then one day, my legs started bopping (uncontrollably) while I was walking. I had to sit on the floor. Thank God I was at work (I work for a hospital) and I was walking with my friend who is a doctor.
Long story short after my CBC my hemoglobin was a LOW 4.
I need three blood transfusions stat!
I wish I knew then what I know now.
Do not let what happened to me happen to you.
