Hand of a doctor with the syringe

How can you keep from getting the flu? The answer from the CDC has long been “get your flu shot.” When people ask about side effects they are told reactions are rare and mild, disappearing within a day or two.

Starting last year, however, we began receiving complaints from readers who experienced long-lasting severe arm pain after getting their annual influenza vaccine. One nurse sent this message:

“I am an RN who, for many years, have been pooh-poohing the notion that the flu shot can cause flu-like symptoms. The literature tells us that’s not true, right? We even had posters around the hospital stating that was a flu shot myth.

“I was embarrassed and horrified this season that I actually did have those symptoms for about 24 hours, starting the morning after the injection. But I’m writing this to join the ranks of those who have had lasting side effects.

“Since having the vaccination several months ago in my left arm, I have had chronic muscle aching mid-deltoid, moderate weakness and reduced range of motion of my upper arm unlike anything I have ever experienced before. The dull ache became an excruciating pain whenever I took my blood pressure in that arm. I would wince audibly in pain when the automatic cuff reached a certain level of pressure, so I began using my right arm to check my BP.

“The pain still occurs when I periodically test my left arm. Now, having read other complaints on your website, I know that it’s not all in my head. I will make an appointment to see my physician, whose assistant administered my injection.”

Readers Report Pain and Disability Linked to Flu Shot

If we had only received a few reports of pain and disability associated with the influenza vaccine we would not be concerned. After all, some people are allergic to flu shots and react badly. Fortunately, that is a relatively small number of individuals.

We have received hundreds of reports of long-lasting shoulder or arm pain following flu vaccination. We suspect that it may be partially related to the higher dose or the four flu strains being recommended for older people. Here is one such story:

“I try to do my part to stay healthy, so I obediently took the super flu shot for seniors. It is now six weeks later and I am still not sleeping due to the pain in my upper arm and elbow.

“Also, I obediently allowed my local pharmacist to administer the shot. Now my primary doctor refuses to treat my problem because his office did not give me the shot. The drug store has contacted their insurance company to open a file on me. When I tried using a liniment it made the pain worse and kept me awake that night. I don’t know what I can do.”

Here are just a few other messages:

Kathy in Utah reported:

“I got my flu shot on November 17, 2015. My arm is in constant pain. I thought the pain would go away in a couple of days but it hasn’t. I can move my arm but I have to be very careful with it. I feel like I have lost all strength in that arm. It hurts to take my blouse off. I am constantly rubbing my arm. If I lose my balance and go to catch myself it shoots the worst pain down my arm clear to my finger tips.”

Laurie in Oakland, CA became very concerned:

“I’ve been really worried that I had bone cancer or something. I got pain that never left after my flu shot in October, 2015. My arm still hurts and when I take off a sweater it really hurts. I finally decided to check to see if anyone else had an adverse reaction to the flu shot. Frankly, I’m glad to know that I was right; it was because of the flu shot and it’s not something way more more serious like cancer. That said, this is a major drag.”

Pat shares this tale of woe:

On December 4, 2015 I got a flu shot. I never had problems before. The nurse put the shot high in the shoulder. The shot itself didn’t hurt but within 2 hours my arm began throbbing. The pain has steadily increased involving the shoulder, upper arm, scapula, and upper back.

“I’ve tried laser therapy, a round of anti-inflammatory medicine, and I am getting ready to start physical therapy. The pain has been horrible; I can’t sleep in any position without waking up. I can’t raise left arm without pain; I can barely pick up my purse. I am very active and this is driving me crazy because I can’t do any activity without pain. I am trying to maintain my range of motion, but it is very painful and hard. I want to know how long this is going to continue and if it’s ever going away.”

What the CDC says:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) mentions some “minor” short-lasting side effects such as soreness, redness or swelling where the shot was given, low-grade fever and aches. Judging from reports at PeoplesPharmacy.com many people have had longer-lasting, more severe reactions in the past couple of years. Even health professionals have experienced severe disability from the flu shot. Here is a nurse’s story.

We encourage anyone who has experienced a serious problem with the flu shot to report it to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). The CDC and the FDA maintain it jointly. Find it online at vaers.hhs.gov. Fax a completed form to (877) 721-0366 or mail the form to VAERS, P.O. Box 1100, Rockville, MD 20849-1100.

There is also a program to compensate people who have been injured by vaccinations. The VICP (National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program) can be reached by phone (800-338-2382) or online: http://www.hrsa.gov/vaccinecompensation/index.html

I had my first COVID shot in early January. Afterward I had a dead arm which was sore, and I was unable to lift it. This lasted about 2 days. Then the arm was completely back to normal. However, nearly 3 months on, and my arm is back to exactly how it felt when I first had the vaccine. I can’t lift it, and it feels like I’ve been punched 100 times in the arm. What is this?? 3 months in? Is it the nerve, but if so, why nothing for nearly 3 months and now this for the past week? I’m due my second soon and am quite concerned. Anyone else experiencing this?

I got the flu shot for the first time ever on October 1, 2020. My arm felt a bit sore for few days after the shot. The pain in my upper arm suddenly came back by the end of October. At the time I didn’t relate it to the shot but after reading the comments I’m sure it is because of the vaccine that I’m having this sharp pain when I try to lift the arm above my head, take off my clothes, sleep on it or try to reach over. I feel my arm so weak as when I workout or do heavy lifting.

The doctor prescribed some steroids but it’s only a momentary relief. Besides, those pills give me a severe stomach pain. Tomorrow I have a second appt. with the doctor, and I’ll be mentioning the flu shot. Like I said before, I didn’t think the pain could be linked to the shot, and I didn’t mentioned it in my first visit.

My husband had the flu shot about a month ago. Has hurt worse than any kind of surgeries he has had. Went to Dr. a few days ago and they did an x-ray, and something showed in his arm. Waiting for a call to do an MRI now. Nothing helps the pain, and he can’t even raise it up to get clothes on or anything.

He has Parkinson’s and has a hard time even getting out of his lift chair. But now can’t even push on the arm of chairs to help him get up. He had never taken flu shots anyway but decided to this year because of the virus. I have never taken one and do not intend to start now after reading all the other people’s comments about theirs going wrong, too. Maybe he’s damaged for now for life?

Had the flu shot (quad dose) October 6, 2020. It is not Nov. 3rd, and I am 99% better with only pain when working around the yard (chain saw type work).

The pain was in my arm and up as far as my shoulder, up to my clavicle, and it was there for weeks. I started to think that it wasn’t going away.

I never had such a problem from a flu shot.

I had a flu jab on 6th October – so not too long ago but I have since developed a dull ache in my upper arm and a feeling of weakness as well as pain when removing jumpers etc. Hoping it is early days and it will improve but thought I’d report it anyway.

I had a flu shot October 13, 2019. I got a burning pain down my arm when the vaccine entered my muscle. I gasped because it was so bad. I expected a sore arm for a few days but it is January, and I’m still in pain despite being in physical therapy for 5 weeks. I can’t move my arm certain ways without pain or lift anything without hurting. Sleeping is difficult and painful. My therapist thinks my bursa was punctured during the injection. It is not adhesive capsulitis. I had no pain in that arm before I got the flu shot. No one should suffer like this from a shot. Sorry so many are experiencing the same pain but comforting to know I’m not alone.

I got my first senior flu shot in my left arm October of 2017. Since then I haven’t been able to raise that arm past mid-hip high without wincing in pain. My 2018 shot didn’t noticeably increase the pain; however, the 2019 shot has resulted in markedly increased pain. I’m a bit hesitant to continue getting my annual flu shot!

I have had chronic pain in my left shoulder after receiving the influenza vaccination approximately 2 months ago. The injection site felt high on my shoulder the day I received it, and I have had chronic pain from the site radiating to my neck and upper back as well as pain during left arm abduction movements ever since. I contacted the pharmacy manager at the hospital where I work, and he said that there have been no other complaints. I am a fairly healthy middle aged woman. I work out regularly and teach a group exercise class 1 evening a week. The pain from this injection has set me back and has inhibited my energy, mood, and movement.

I received my flu shot (fluzone quad) Oct 24, 2019, and since then my arm has been sore and weak. I can’t sleep on that side and find it hard to find a comfortable sleeping position. It hurts when I try to put on a shirt or my coat. Some days it’s worse than others: my shoulder throbs and the pain radiates to my elbow and my back. I went to my doctor’s and he sent me for an ultrasound. I haven’t gotten my results yet but he does feel a lump and thinks maybe I have an intramuscular hematoma from the flu shot injection. I’m hoping this will resolve shortly, as skiing season is here.

Two weeks ago I had too my flu shot at my pharmacy. I have not had a decent night’s sleep since! My arm feels like it is going to fall off. At this point I almost wish it would! That’s how fierce the pain is! I’ve been taking the shot for 30 some years. Am 67 now and have not ever experienced anything like this in my life! Will be seeing my doctor. I have no other choice. I had my phnemonia shot in the other arm without any trouble!

Wow! Reading all the comments has really helped. I thought it was just me. I started getting the flu shot every year after my husband landed in the ER with the flu 10 years ago. Usually, the arm pain only lasts a week. This year my arm pain started a few hours after getting the flu shot in early September, and it has just kept getting worse for the last month. Kathy in Utah’s description sounds exactly like my pain. I haven’t had a full night’s sleep since the shot. Every time I bump my arm or roll over on it, I wake up. It is difficult to do my job anymore since my work involves a lot of computer time, and it hurts to type or use the mouse.

I went to the doctor where they gave me oral steroids and referred me to a neurologist. The steroids took the edge off the pain but they are about to run out. The earliest neurologist appointment I could get is six months away. I would rather have the flu than get another flu shot. I would have been better by now.

I’ve had the arm pain following flu shot twice now. I believe the first time was 2014. The shot was high on shoulder, but don’t remember if it hadn’t been high previous times. There was about an inch of redness around area where bandage was, showing its outline. For 3 months, couldn’t lift that arm to wash my hair. My doctor was familiar with this issue and thought the pain would be gone in 6 months. For me, it took at least 9.

This time, in fall 2019, pharmacist gave me the shot. Very painless when injected, but afterwards I had that same sharp pain in shoulder as in 2014. It’s lasted a month so far.

Helps a lot to keep arm touching my torso, even when lifting it up.

Have probably had at least 35 flu shots in lifetime. This problem only happened twice, and in recent years.

After flu jab in 2018 I had intense pain on the inside of my arm like a gnawing toothache. I cannot sleep on it, for the pain throbbing at times. If I get cold the same thing happens: in certain movements I can go into intense spasms, too. The person giving the shot was very rough and rude and nearly complained at the time. Eight months on, and I am much the same. Doc will not agree that it’s from jab. It’s the same in the site of the jab but can extend all over arm and shoulder. Have a physiotherapy appt. but will never have a jab again. Might sue.

I had the quad flu shot a year ago, and it has caused major pain ever since. It is not going away. I cannot move my arm in a certain radius at all. I have never seen pain like this, and it keeps me from sleeping normally at night since my arm has to be positioned a certain way. The pharmacy had gotten a student from a school to give the injection. My arm is permanently frozen from pain. I cannot reach behind me at all. I cannot simply put a rubber band in my hair to make a pony tail. Things like that are impossible any more without major pain in my right arm from the flu shot which is a permanent condition now.

I came across this page by accident.. I had a flu shot in my right arm ,almost a year ago, and I have to say, my right arm is just about useless. When I got the shot, I was standing talking with my doctor, getting ready to leave, my appt.was over…this nurse walked into the room and literally slammed a needle into my right arm,did not tell me what it was for or what it was…the doctor at that time said whoaaaa….he saw what she did…My arm has never been the same,so weak and a nagging ache/pain…not real acute just nagging ..Can not sleep on that side. And I always did.. that was my first flu shot and it was without my permission…If I knew a good attorney, I would sue, it ruined my quality of life, especially sleeping…cannot sleep on that side at all..it was given to me , without consent, without even giving me time to get mentally prepared…she knew I said no flu shot, but yet was gave one anyway, slamed into my arm…I wish there was a recourse for people like me….I am to old to have my arm constantly pain, it never hurt me before that without permission shot.

I’ve had many flu shots over the years, but I received one on Nov. 4th 2019, and since then I have been in total misery. It was the first shot I’ve ever had that hurt and bled when it was given to me. The next morning I couldn’t move my arm away from my body without severe pain that just kept getting worse every day. Doctor put me on steroids and no relief at all, after a week where both arms and neck all hurt. It hurts to pick anything up. Trying to vacuum or sleep and get comfortable is almost unheard- of. Now my doctor wants to get ultra sounds done etc., which I can’t afford with my high deductible. What is a person supposed to do? I’m glad to know I’m not the only one with this problem, but relief would be nice. I will never get another flu shot.

I too had the flu shot last October and since then have had muscle pain. Cannot turn my arm inward without pain. Didn’t realize I wasn’t alone in this. Figured someone would tell me I was crazy to blame it on the flu shot. But I had no pain up til then. Hard to pick up anything heavy and cannot lie on that arm at night without pain. Can’t find anything on what caused the pain or if it is treatable.

I have had continuous upper arm pain for the last couple of years. I remember it commencing after the flu jab either autumn 2016 or 2017, so I ran an Internet search and found this forum. I do have other pains for which I have seen a rheumatologist, and when I’ve seen him, I have run the arm pain in with the other problems. However, the arm pain never goes away, whereas the other pains have dormancy for long periods. The pain is around the injection site, and I have limited movement in my right arm, because of the pain. Close-to-the-body movements (like putting arm in sleeve) are worse than reaching out movements, and don’t seem to be isolated as problems during physical examination by doctors who ask for broad and open movements to asses degree of disability.

I declined the flu jab 2018 after taking it for about 8 yrs because I strongly intuited that it was only affecting me adversely.

I had the 2018 flu vaccine at the start of october. The injection was given by the pharmacist at my local chemist. The injection was given about halfway down my upper left hand arm, roughly midway between my shoulder and elbow. The injection was not immediately painful, but within 2-3 hours my upper arm started to get painful at the injection site. Initially I thought the pain was a normal reaction and waited. However after one month I still have continuous sore, aching pain in my arm. It is particularly noticable when reaching with my left hand across to my right, for example when turning the car steering wheel to the right, although there is a continuous pain present all the time. Also more painful on lifting, for example lifting a bag of shopping with my left arm. If I gently press the area where the injection was made, the pain is worse. There is no visible bruise or lump or any other mark at the surface. It is now one month since the injection, and I have been in continuous pain since the day of the injection. I went back to the pharmacist who said this is very unusual and she doesn’t understand it. I have bought some OTC ibuprofen and will take the standard dose for a few days to see if that helps it. If the pain does not improve I will go to visit my GP.

I havent gotten a flu shot for about 5 years, maybe 6 now. I used to get the nasal, but I wasn’t able to get that, and now I’m over 50 and can’t. I got the shot this year because my daughter is having a baby, and I wanted to be up on all my vaccinations. The first 2 nights after getting the vaccination, I spent hours nauseated and throwing up. I want sure if it was the shot or an illness, and I ended up feeling to sick to travel to her baby shower. Now, two weeks later, my arm is still very achy with pain from my shoulder to my wrist. My arm hurts no matter what I do, and if I try to carry any weight, pain radiates from my elbow.

I got the flu shot at a local CVS last Oct. 7th2017. I didn’t have a problem for about one month after the injection. Then I started having the pain that many others have described. To sleep at night was almost impossible. The arm, my dominant left arm, had to be in a certain position or the pain was constant. I bought multiple tubes of Asper cream, but truthfully it made the pain worse. It would start in my left shoulder blade and travel to my left wrist and I was miserable. The pain has finally improved, but guess what, it is flu shot time again. I think that I am going to opt out this year.

I had the flu vac in Sept 2017 in the UK. All the symptoms described above apply to me, a woman aged 73. This last week the pain has suddenly subsided, and movement has improved. (June 10th 2018). My doctor did not seem surprised when I described my symptoms and immediately prescribed long term painkillers. Is it well known in the medical world that the 2017 flu vac has caused this reaction? I didn’t take the painkillers. So be patient my fellow folks and hope all will eventually turn out well.

Well after reading all these comments I realize that the flu shot has major issues and I’m not the only one suffering. I am a 51 year old woman from Australia and have had many flu shots over many years without no side effects.

Nearly a month ago May 2018, I thought I was just unlucky as 3 to 4 hours after being given a flu shot in my left arm, it started to throb and ache. At first I thought the injection was put to high as most of the pain was in or under my shoulder cap but radiated down my arm to wrist and fingers.

I returned to my dr a day later who sent me for x-rays and a ultrasound sound to give a cortisone injection as can help with pain. Sadly the ultrasound sound found inflammation in the area and no injection given in case a infection was also there and was told to go straight back to the dr.

My Dr did blood tests showing i had inflammation in my blood but a low level of 13.4 showing. So put me on steriod tablets to help with inflammation. Nearly 2 weeks later with the pain only getting worse and unable to use my arm hardly at all. The blood test was redone hoping the inflammation levels had dropped so could have the cortisone injection, but instead have now gone up to 39.1.

Sleeping is so hard as every time I move the pain just seems to get worse and without my husbands help I can not undress and shower, as my left arm has no movement to lift arm up or move in any direction with wanting to scream with pain. I’m on other medications for other pain which doesn’t seem to help this pain and even trying to do small exercise even with arm hanging makes the pain worse.

I would rather have flu, than ever have another flu vaccine, as I feel my life has come to a stop with the pain and now have a arm which is no use and pain that doesn’t seem to give me nothing but sleepless nights and now relying on others to even do the simplest things for me if have to use the left arm.
Would love to hear from anyone who has a quick fix. As would rather die than put up with this for much longer.

After receiving this year’s flu shot on 2/6 at my local Walgreen’s pharmacy, within a few hours of getting the shot, I developed a sharp pain in my arm a few inches down from the injection site and on the inside of my arm. I expected it to get better but that has not been the case. After 2 weeks of constant pain, always in the same location, when I used that arm, I was concerned that I might develop frozen shoulder from not wanting to use the arm and experience the pain.

I went to a physical therapist, Chiropractor, and had xrays, adjustments, electrical stimulation, heat treatment to help treat the pain symptoms but after 6 trips in 2 weeks with no relief, and hundreds of dollars later I have been trying to keep using my arm and ignoring the pain.

I did report my adverse reaction to the VAERS but what I would like to know is why is this happening to many of us? What is the science behind this reaction and what can be done to alleviate the pain and discomfort?
It has now been 2 1/2 months and still painful in my arm. I appreciate reading others comments and hope to read soon that someone has figured out what triggers this reaction and how to heal best.

In October 2017 I went in for my annual physical, at which time I was given my first and last flu shot. I am a 68 year-old male who was healthy, frequented the gym, was semi- retired and was still working. The nurse asked me if I was right or left handed before she gave me the shots, and I now know the reason for that. Since receiving the shot my left arm has been in horrible pain and absolutely worthless. I went back to my Dr complaining about the pain and being unable to use my arm. His diagnosis was tendonitis or I had done something and torn the rotator cuff.

I had zero problems with my left arm before the shot. I was lifting weights and going to the gym and now have a useless left limb that aches continually and keeps me awake all night. My Dr put me on 800 mg Ibuprofen and some exercises but acted unaware of any other side effects from the shots. The pain is constant and at times is unbearable. My range of motion for my arm to be pain free (other than a constant ache) is to hang freely or bend at the elbow. To raise my arm or attempt to raise it over my head is take your breath away horrific torture-type pain. I am seldom able to sleep at night, as the pain seems worse at night and has me almost in tears a lot of the time; especially a quick catch-yourself reaction.

I have been to a chiropractor; had deep tissue massages; take 800 mg Ibuprofen, and it has not gone away. My quality of life, along with many others without use of our left arms, is quite a sacrifice we would never have given for a flu shot. I will take the flu any day. Please keep me advised!

I received the flu shot in November of 2016. I was told by the tech that initally, my arm would hurt so I may need to take tylenol. The left arm pain began a few days after I received the flu shot. It progressively worsened as time went by. It felt like a rubber band was encircling my upper arm. Sharp to aching intermittent pain was very uncomfortable. I also noticed aching pain in my left shoulder & left lower back. But I experienced less frequent pain at my left shoulder & left lower back than in my left upper arm. I noticed pain would become aggravated by lying flat on my back or when riding my bike. I will never ever agree to another flu shot again. As a nurse, I either receive the flu shot or sign a release to wear a face mask during flu season. The mask will be the safer of the two for me.

I’m relieved to see I was not overreacting and not alone in this debilitating condition. I also received my flu shot in October 2017 from my place of employment (healthcare facility). It is now March 21, 2018 and the only relief I have is when I take extra strength Tylenol throughout the day and everyday. I’m scared that I might suffer from liver damage; therefore I only take no more than six tablets a day. The most unbearable time is most nights and in the mornings when I wake up. Do anyone knows how long this annoying pain will persist?

It is such a relief to also know I am not crazy. I’m writing this at 1100pm trying to sleep with my left arm in throbbing pain. It varies from just being deep muscle pain to an impinging type pain under my shoulder all the way down to my wrist. Had the flu shot IM injection months ago at a CVS and bled at the site. I had to do it for my nursing training but I am a guy and tolerate pain well and this has been consistent, and created muscle weakness, and is very disconcerting at night. Something is fishy here and my pain directly correlates with the shot. Im so glad to see I am not alone! Hopefully there is a way to figure this out.
A physician I was seeing to get my medical tests/immunizations done for school was using a cane and told me it was from some nerve damage from the flu shot. It made me wary but it had to be done for the program. Few months later I got the shot at CVS, been having radiating arm pain ever since. Deep deltoid pain, impinging shoulder pain under the acromial process, and radiating pain down the arm sometimes all the way to the wrist. I’m grateful to live in an age where medicine is available to me but this is unfortunate, and the controversy surrounding the efficacy of the shot makes me disagree with all healthcare professionals having to receive this. More money for some more suffering for others. It has it’s place but I wish it wasn’t forced on me

My flu shot was administered in December 2017. At first I thought it was more tender than normal, after a short period of time I began having muscle ache and pain in the arm/muscle at the injection site and surtounding area. Now after weeks of severe muscle pain, jabbing shooting pain down the arm and into the wrist I can barely sleep at night. The arm has become weak and in constant nonsubsiding pain. It is now including the shoulder joint itself, radiating in all directions. I truly hope this will resolve soon and the body will heal, nothing helps, I keep moving and using it as it is my right arm, but the constant pain is exhausting.

      Reply to everyone out there.

Same thing happened to me in December 2015. Within 2 hrs of getting the shot all of my joints hurt – hands, neck, shoulders, knees. Pain lasted between 3 days to a week. Afterwards, pain remained in my left shoulder at the injection site (high up on the left shoulder). Have had muscular/skeletal issues ever since, primarily in the neck and shoulders.

In December 2016 got one of the worst head colds/flus I’ve ever had. Came on all at once and lasted 4 days. A week afterwards I noticed that the pain in my left arm at the injection site was gone. Doctor I saw in summer 2018 figures I had a reaction to the base solution used. I feel for everyone out there. You will get no answers, and no one will accept responsibility for the nonflu illness caused by this vaccine.

I have always thought my arm pain was related to getting my flu shot this past October but now I am positive after reading all the above stories. I had my injection through my drugstore and have had severe pain, limited range of motion, and extreme pain at night that wakes me up. I finally went to my primary doctor who sent me for an xray which showed nothing. He said I needed P.T. which did nothing. He told me to use a heating pad which makes the pain worse. I am taking ibuprofen that only makes the pain more tolerable during the day. Has anyone at the CDC figured out why this has happened and how long this will last? This pain is excruciating at night. I am going back to my primary doctor and am hesitant to tell him that I know it’s from the shot since he believes its arthritis now, and he didn’t administer the injection.

Just over two weeks ago I received a flu shot and a DPT (Diphtheria, Pertessis and Tetanus) on the same day. I got the DPT in my right arm and the flu shot in my left (note that I write with my left hand). There was a typical ache after both, but the DPT seemed to relax much faster than the flu shot. The flu shot pain went away after about five days, and was gone for a week. Just a few days ago the pain returned, but it is the most excruciating muscle pain I have ever experienced. It feels although my shoulder is dislocated, and I need to pop it back into place, but that pain is not directly on my shoulder, it’s about four inches lower. I have little use for this arm, my motion is limited and I have a noticeable difference in grip. I have also noticed that because of this my handwriting neatness and speed has been affected. The pain has gotten worse daily.

I am swam to hear that this affects more people than me. I am not a big advocate for the flu shot for me but my family always gets it. Three years ago I got the shot and my arm hurt for over two years. It finally stopped a few months ago and I was so happy. I truly thought it was because I worked out a lot and I was just needing a rest because I was told at the time that it surly can’t be the flu shots fault.

Well as we all know the flu has killed several this year and so by urging from family and news I got it a few weeks ago. To my frustration and surprise, the same pain is back in my left arm. I have pain getting shirts and sports bras on and off. I guess it’s two more years of pain and frustration.

Has anyone reported this to the CDC or the program for compensation. I received the vaccine in 2016…have commented here in the past. The cortizone helped for a short time. Had the vaccine in the same arm in Nov 2017 and in January it is starting all over again. Your comments and answers help. I no longer feel crazy and alone.

I am so glad to see I am not alone in this. Back in the late 90s, I received a flu shot at my local hospital. From that point forward, I had a deep, painful ache in my upper arm that almost felt like a constriction. It lasted for SIX YEARS, 24/7. During the years that followed, I never got another flu shot, at the recommendation of my doctor (and the pharmacist).

Did it ever stop? Yes, it finally did, after receiving prayer at a church service. *laugh if you will but the pain stopped after six straight years* With the current dangers of the 2017-18 flu, I’m tempted to get the shot, but I sure don’t want to ever go through that again. So I stay in my house, wash my hands like crazy and keep my Vit. D levels up.

I would like to join the person who is filing a law suit. This is the first time I received the flu shot, early November 2017. Being in the teaching profession for over 25 years, I am tired of getting sick several times each year. I am happy to report I have not been sick since going on over two months. This came with a price to pay. My left upper arm has decreased range of mobility and cramps severely if I try to lift anything past my shoulder since I had the shot. Overall body weakness getting out of bed in the morning, and at times after sitting it is hard to push myself up! I am 53 and have never felt these symptoms before the shot. I am praying things get better, this is definitely not normal.

I received the senior super flu vaccine at a grocery store pharmacy on December 30th. Two hours later my middle to upper back felt tight and painful. I have tried aspirin and Aleve, heat and cold, yoga, rollers and stretching. Lifting my arms over my head hurts. It hurts getting in and out of bed. Coughing and sneezing really hurts. The feeling is close to the feeling I had with broken ribs.

This seems vaccine-related but I can’t find other reactions other than the shoulder arm area. I am trying massage today, but wonder is there any help for this.

Oct. Received quad 4 flu vaccine. I am a nurse who received the regular vaccine for years with no reactions. This one by evening of that day no appetite, cold to the bone, both arms ached, plus right side of back. Couldn’t sleep in any position. It.s now Jan 1st and very little relief. Also had temptary bridge to replace a tooth, it also ached so bad when eating. The dentist took an X-ray finding inflammation. I was given 4 day tapering dose of dexamethazone. It help the jaw and arms. The pain in arms came back and hasn’t resolved.

I am strangely relieved to have found this site. I thought I was losing my mind. I’ve never had a bad reaction to a vaccination before but almost a month ago I was given both a flu shot in my right arm and a pneummonia shot in my left arm. I was also sick at the time, enough for my doctor to prescribe an antibiotic and prednesone, but he gave me both shots that day anyway. Within 3 days my temperature shot up to 103 degrees and I was seriously ill for three days. Ever since then I can barely lift my arms. The pain has spread to my lower back, hip joints, neck and my hands are killing me. I’ve lost a lot of the strength in my arms and can barely grip anything. I can barely get out of bed in the morning and if I roll over in my sleep the pain wakes me up. I’m not sure what to do about this, but I’m definately not going back to the same doctor.

I dutifully got the flu shot on Nov. 22. A day or two later, I got a sharp pain at the site of the injection, but I dismissed it as just a temporary side effect. But as the days progressed the pain continued, and even got worse, especially when I lifted the arm or extended it. It feels like a bad bruise most of the time, but becomes sharply acute when the arm is lifted. I have a high pain threshold, but out of prudence, I notified my doctor. Well, he had nothing to say about it. Either he doesn’t have a clue, or doesn’t consider it serious enough to warrant concern. It seems to me that my muscle has been damaged, and, frankly, I am outraged, as I trusted the medical profession (and the FDA) to provide well-tested and safe vaccines. I have always been pro-vaccine, as I am well-aware that they have saved many more lives than the alternative. But, I now feel betrayed, and I will never again allow my body to be injected with such unreliable and potentially destructive substances. In the future, I’ll take my chances with the flu! In the meanwhile, I’m wondering what effect this is having in my arm, let alone in my body.

I also am continuing to have constant pain in my right shoulder months after I and my children went to my doctor’s office to get the flu shot. I have tried sleeping on the opposite arm, as well as on my back and still could not get relief. The only time it seems to get a little better is when I’m awake, but it is constant throughout the day.

I have begun to dread nighttime because I know that I will lie down and it will get worse. I’ve seen an acupuncturist to have cupping done on the area. Has anyone tried cupping? I just had it done today and it took away some of the pain but I have not gone to sleep yet this would be the first night. There has got to be some type of solution, I cannot continue to be in pain constantly.

I had the flu shot for the first time 3 weeks ago. The nurse that gave it to me told me that if I used the muscle in my arm that it would not get sore, so I told her to put it in my right arm (my dominant arm), thinking that since I used this one the most that it would go away quickly….three weeks later my arm is really sore I cannot use it to type or write for long periods of time and have a hard time sleeping due to the pain. Also, I cannot use it full range, just as some of you have stated. I am very frustrated with this and wish I would have not gotten the shot at all. I will not be getting it again in future years, this will be the first and LAST!

My left arm has been hurting since. However, the pain is still there. It hurts with ROM and when I put my shirt on and off. When I take a pain reliever the pain subsides. I don’t know what to do.

I had my flu jab nearly 7 months ago. In less than 24hrs l was in severe pain from shoulder to finger tips It’s still exactly the same today. Dr said it was cold shoulder and gave me pain killers which did nothing. Second dr sent me to a sports injury thearapist and he said the same Nothing shows up on X-ray. I’m so glad I found this site. It just proves Drs in this country are denying the existence of this problem. I have found heat patches and a Tens machine helpful. No more flu jabs for me.

My fluzone (super flu) shot for seniors was given September 5, 2017. Since then, my life has changed. I had gotten flu shots every year since 1972. Never an issue. But this year with fluzone was different. I had minor pain and stiffness the first few days. After that, my upper arm started hurting terribly. At night and sometimes when still, my upper arm throbs. I can’t lift my arm over my head or across my body–front and back–without horrible pain. I can’t lift my arm out to the side more than 12 inches without pain. Sometimes my upper arm is painful to touch or pressure.

My physician told me it wasn’t the vaccine. She insists that vaccine reactions are mild and leave quickly. Rather, she maintained I had deltoid tendonitis which coincidentally started right after the shot. She is wrong,

I reported this to VAERS for what it’s worth. Three months for me. Does anyone have a story about how long term reaction lasted? Or what can be done?

I had a flu shot on October 18th, 2017. Of course, the normal soreness from a vaccine, but this is still going on. The muscle in my upper arm is sore all the time, but excruciating when raising my arm up, pulling it toward my body, getting dressed (which I have to have help getting my clothes off now), etc. Never, ever in my life have I experienced anything like this. It is painful to lift my arm higher than my head and one sideways motion is painful. I had a series of exrays 1 month later to make sure it wasn’t an unnoticed injury. Normal exrays. At this time I am using Tylenol or Volaren creme. I am sure this will pass, but it is definitely there.

I got the super flu shot September 28, 2017, and my left upper arm is hurting so badly. I can only try to sleep on my right side, however if through the night I try to move to sleep on my left side, it kills me with pain and I am awake for the rest of the night. My husband has been so nice to open things because of the pain. I can’t drive a car as I am afraid I could get one of those shooting pains and get into an accident. I am a pretty independent person and, I am sure my husband is getting tired of taking my everywhere. I am getting tired of it also. Today is November 5, 2017 and my arm is no better.

My Dr. said warm compresses. I even tried sleeping with a heating pad, no luck. It is still there. I tried cold compresses, nothing seems to work. Next is to get a x-ray to see if that will tell us maybe all the flu shot juice went in one muscle and not anywhere else. It has been one and a half months, and I think that we should have been warned of the pain that the flu shot could cause us, instead of warning us of the pneumonia for seniors that we could catch and even die!! So we all are doing what we have been warned about and it hurts so badly. Nothing seems to work!!

I have had the jab for 10 years with no ill effects. In fact, I previously didn’t even feel the needle go in. However, this year the jab was extremely painful while being administered. The usual soreness started the next day and disappeared the following day. Two days later my upper arm became very painful with movement, as if I had pulled a muscle. It is particularly difficult putting on and taking off anything with sleeves. It is extremely painful when trying to move my arm upon waking each morning. A month down the line, I’m getting fed up with it. I haven’t been to the doctor; I don’t suppose he can do anything about it.

I could not lift my arm to put away the dishes. Thought maybe the nurse just hit a deep nerve. Went again the next year and this time I had no problem. So, I tried again last October, and my arm has been sore for one whole year!! Just took my family in today for their shots and told the nurse administering the shot what happened. She’s the same one who gives it every year. She recommended that I not get it this year and had no explanation for me. No more flu shots for me!!

The injection was in my deltoid and it and muscles down the outside of my are are painful especially when moving after being relaxed for a while such as in an arm chair. I usually use my right arm to move the left arm initially as these muscles are quite sore. Was the vaccination contaminated with something?

I am a hospital employee who had the vaccine in Dec 2016. I have been getting flu vaccines for over 20 years. This year, the vaccine caused me to have a fever at the site for 2 days and a a sore arm. I have had increased pain since with range of motion problems, unable to sleep, get dressed, do any lifting or physical activity with my right arm.

Since the first day of the vaccine, I have been complaining of increased pain and discomfort as all in the medical field were looking at me like I was crazy. In August, the pain was so severe and the anti inflammatories were killing my stomach, I went to an ortho who took xrays and gave me a cortisone shot. It has somewhat helped with the range of motion, but my arm is not right.

I cannot excercise, lift without pain (light lifting home objects) and am also experkiencing numbness in my ring and pinky finger!! Now, I need to get an MRI and will be seeing a nuerologist. This is crazy but after reading everyone else’s story, I feel like I am not crazy!!

Update! I posted initially in March. I went to the doctor after that, and they sent me for an ultrasound. Nothing showed up, thank God, but what’s the explanation, truly?!? They said if the pain continued, or worsened, that they could do another ultrasound, on the back of the arm. I haven’t made my second appointment, but oh boy, HAS it worsened! Now, I can’t even take off shirts without (get this!) using a hanger! I feel pain my arm all the time, and it’s slightly swollen. This is ridiculous, but I almost got looked at like I was from Mars, when I mentioned the words, “flu shot” to my doctor. What gives?!?!?

WOW!! I was looking for some answers about why my left arm was still hurting after taking a flu shot November 25, 2016 at a health fair. After reading all the comments I realized that my problem is from that flu shot. My pain is like a hard sharp knife pain in my right arm it comes and go, often comes when I start eating something. After reading all the comments I’m going to schedule me an appointment to see my doctor.

My arm still hurts after 7 months. The pain has limited my abilities that call for using my right arm. It hurts at night when I’m trying to sleep as well. This all began after the flu shot.

The first day after the shot I couldn’t even lift my arm. I get a flu shot every year but don’t know if I will get one this year.

I had the flu shot around November of 2016. My arm ached and I got very sick from it with chills and fever for several days afterwards. It eventually went away. Now, April 2017, for the last week my arm has been aching and in pain again in the same area and feels like I just got the flu shot again. The pain subsides some during the day, but at night when I am lying down, the pain comes back with a vengeance. I cannot move my arm or find a comfortable place to rest it. I am also very concerned about how long this will last. I will not get the flu shot again.

I am a nurse and have received and given the flu shot every year. I have been experiencing pain in my left shoulder to my deltoid for 6 months now and it started after a very painful flu vaccination. My family practitioner has diagnosed me with rotator cuff issues and prescribed physical therapy.

She never x-rayed my arm but based her diagnosis on witnessing my limited range of motion and complaints of intense pain. I went to an orthopedic surgeon and he agreed with my hypothesis that my pain is due to my flu vaccination based on my normal x-rays and ordered an MRI. I am very upset about this and frustrated that no one can tell me when and if this pain and limited range of motion will ever resolve. I will never take a flu shot again!!

I too have had a reaction to the flu shot that I received in 2016. It didn’t hurt when I first got the shot but a few days later I started getting pain in my arm and then swelling, then loss of mobility. This happened in October, 2016, and now it is the end of February 2017. I’ve gone to physical therapy but it only helped take down swelling and gain mobility. The pain still persists. Help!

I am an RN. My daughter received the flu shot at local pharmacy in October 2015 and within 2 hours began having right arm/ shoulder pain that lasted 6 months. It eventually subsided to intermittent pain/weakness. It is now February 2017 and her pain has intensified over the last two months to an 8 out of 10 with certain movements. She has suffered no injuries and the only thing we can attribute it to is the flu shot. We were wondering if anyone had a similar experience.

My mom took her flu shot a week and a half ago, pain started at shot site and worked down to elbow a week after taking shot. Pain extremely painful and continuing into its third week. Wondering how long this pain will hang around. For seniors it’s very difficult because their ability to stand pain is very limited. She has major problems tending basic hygiene needs. Brushing her teeth, combing hair, taking a bath , dressing , etc. from what I ve been reading from these comments nothing to address this problem.
Oh to top it off in third week the whole hand has swelled very painfully.

My husband and I (both 62) got our flu shots in November 2016. My husband felt unwell that night and I felt very ill the next morning. This is the first time I have had this experience with a flu shot. Shortly after, we both started experiencing pain in our right arms, from the forearm to the shoulder that continues to this day – January 23rd, 2017. We didn’t connect it to the flu shot until recently but we thought it was so odd that we were both having this pain in the same arm. By the way, we both got our shot in our left arms but it is our right arms that are affected.

Question at end. This is the first time I had a reaction to the Flu Shot. I had some initial soreness–to be expected. But 2, 6, 10 days later I would wake up in the middle of the night with excruciating arm pain at the site of my shot. It was deep and throbbing and I had trouble sleeping as it kept waking me up nightly. Eventually it subsided to tolerable but had gone on for months. It is still mildly sore months later–it’s tolerable but concerning since it’s been months since my Flu Shot. My question is will I become increasingly sensitive to future flu shots each subsequent time I get a shot? If so, I would will rethink getting it next year/s.

My experience with my latest flu shot mirrors that of the RN quoted above: “Since having the vaccination several months ago in my left arm, I have had chronic muscle aching mid-deltoid, moderate weakness and reduced range of motion of my upper arm unlike anything I have ever experienced before”. And I have never had a problem through the years of flu vaccinations. I had my shot in late September; symptoms persist even now in January, 2017. What’s up with THAT?!

I, too, have been experiencing soreness at what I can only imagine was the site of the flu shot. I got the flu shot I believe in November 2016, and now it’s almost the middle of March 2017, and there is still a slightly raised section where the flu shot happened and I can barely sleep on that arm at night, like I used to.

Mobility is slightly affected, too, because I can’t move my arm underneath my head in bed to the same degree. It is a concerted effort. There’s also sometimes this dull ache that I notice. It makes me scared there’s something else going on, but that’s the only thing that happened that I attribute it to. Otherwise, I’m a healthy, almost 50-year-old woman. Odd. I barely even had pain at the site of the flu shot, prior to this.

I have never had any problems getting my flu shot. People’s Pharmacy was where I first heard of this possible side effect. I received my shot about 6 wks. ago, and within a day my left arm started bothering me. My pain is concentrated in the front, but also in middle of my arm. It’s becoming more like a throbbing pain and I’ll be very reluctant to get the vaccine next year. I hope this eventually subsides, but I’m very concerned that it won’t.

I am a senior and I had my flu shot at CVS pharmacy by the pharmacist on Dec 19th, and I have had pain in my left arm ever since. I went to the doctor the 28th, and he said I have a deltoid muscle problem in my left shoulder. My left shoulder, arm and even hand have hurt for a week and a half, and I am very worried after reading some of these comments that this problem won’t be going away soon. I am very active, and play golf and am having a problem raising my arm or picking up anything, and my arm constantly throbs and spasms. I am three months out from having my flu shot (October 3rd) and I have had horrible pain from shoulder down to my fingers. It doesn’t go away. I have numbness, and tingling that keeps me up at night. The simple tasks of doing dishes, folding clothes, or holding a cup is not done without pain. This all began after my flu shot (that very night). I don’t know what to do, it’s like doctor’s don’t know what to do either. Mine put me on prednisone. That drug is horrible for you. Ugh, if anyone can shine light on what has helped them, I would appreciate it. Or, how long they had to deal with the pain.

I am so relieved to find out that I am not alone in the symptoms that I have experienced! My company provides a flu shot for us, and I had mine on October 18th. When the nurse gave me the shot, I was a little concerned at where she gave the injection since it was closer to my shoulder. Since then, I have had excruciating paid in my arm – so bad that it sometimes wakes me up at night if I roll onto my left side. It constantly aches and has definitely limited my range of motion, and I have found that even simple tasks like getting dressed and making the bed are painful. I am still able to work, but I am going to my doctor today to see if anything can be done to alleviate the pain.

he pharmacist also gave me a shot through a white circled bandaid that she said was for bleeders. I never said I was a bleeder and to be honest I’m not even sure if she had gloves on, but hopefully she did. I’m very concerned that this is an infection, it looks like it may be. I got the flu vaccine from a nurse practitioner at the company I work for on 10/5/16. I started having shoulder pain that night. The pain is so bad now I can’t sleep at night and I have trouble getting dressed and undressed.

I went back to the nurse practitioner and was told that have bursitis, but it was probably not related to the flu vaccine. I have never had any problems with my shoulder. Later in the day I was telling a co-worker about it and she is having the exact same issue. She had already gone back to the np and was told almost the exact same thing as I was.

Seems strange. I feel like it was related to the vaccine given in the wrong place. I’m going to see my primary doctor.

I had my last flu shot in October, 2015. Within 2 days I could not lift my left arm, could not sleep on my left side, and couldn’t even put my bra on by myself, because I could move my left arm around to the back. The other side effect was the flu, which started about 2 weeks after I received my vaccine. I was finally diagnosed with polymyalga rheumatica, caused by the flu shot. I went to physical therapy for 4 months, took pain relievers, and steroids. It took one year for me to be able to sleep through the night without pain from turning from one side to the other. It is still sore some nights, but nothing like the pain that would wake me and cause me to cry in the middle of the night. I’m so glad to have read the article and will file a complaint with the authorities. I received my shot at a local drugstore, and wasn’t even aware that he was giving me the higher strength because of my age. He didn’t tell me until after I got the shot. This year I refused to have a flu shot.

I saw your article on this topic in Sunday’s Palm Beach Post. Boy, was I relieved to see I was not alone. I also received my (required by school) flu shot and Hep B shot in early September of 2015. Since then, I have had a pretty persistent ache in my left deltoid muscle which gets much worse when I try and raise my arm. It wakes me up at night if God forbid, I try and put my arm under my pillow. The pain has gotten increasingly worse over the past 5 months too. I read the thread, so I know this is all well covered territory. What I am writing about is this…this morning I went on the government website for compensation. There is a $400 filing fee!!! Does anyone know if there is any way around this? Has anyone filed or looked into this? Thanks!

I received my flu shot in Sept of 2015. About two weeks later my arm started hurting to the point where I didn’t want to raise it. It was hard for me to put on my blouse or pull anything over my head. I asked by doc because I had also just begun to take Lipitor. I thought it was a side effect of that but she told me it was not. After that I figured it was the flu shot. I was surprised at how many people had this reaction. I have been getting the shot at my office for about six years and this is the first time I had any reaction. The pain slowly crept down my arm and my elbow is still a little sore. It feels as if I have picked up something just a little too heavy. Not a bad pain, but more like a soreness. I haven’t decided if I am going to have the shot this year.

I received my flu shot on 2-11-16. I have a very low immune system bc I take prednisone daily for an auto-immune disease so my physicians are very persistent about me getting the flu shot every yr. I explained I got very sick after getting the flu shot last yr and wasn’t going to get the shot this yr. The physician said that last years vaccine didn’t work well with several “bad” batches. I finally agreed to get the vaccine. The nurse administered it high on the left shoulder which I wasn’t aware of the administration location and possible problems that could occur.
Approximately 2-3 hours following the injection I had excruciating pain and throbbing in my left elbow with severe redness, swelling, very warm to the touch and redness moving up my inner arm and forearm. I also starting having flu like symptoms such as body aches, chills, headache etc…. I am still having severe throbbing/excruciating pain in my elbow with redness, swelling going down my forearm with heat radiating from my arm. I will be visiting my Drs office or local ER to report my suspicions of possible flu shot side effects or f/up on what is causing this horrible pain. I’m also having issues with my clothes even touching my arm.

I got a flu shot in 2014 in my left arm – a young, inexperienced pharmacist administered the vaccine. I am a nurse and felt that the vaccine was administered to high. Until this day, I have ongoing throbbing in that arm – fortunately, I am doing everything in my power to Holistically remedy the problem. I took the vaccine as REQUIRED by my facility where I have worked for 9 years. Needless to say, I am looking for another job that does not have this requirement.

I also had severe pain in my shoulder after receiving a flu shot in 2013 from a well known Pharmacy chain. I new almost immediately when receiving the injection that the pharmacist put the needle in the wrong place and it felt like it hit something it shouldn’t have After several weeks I contacted my physician, who was baffled and recommended I see an Orthopedic doctor. I did this, and this doctor, after sending me for an MRI, said that the bursa was greatly inflamed and started a series of cortisone injections in an attempt to lessen the inflammation. It did not work and I actually had to have surgery on the shoulder and go through physical therapy afterwards for several weeks. It took a good year before I was able to get good movement in that shoulder and to be able to sleep on that side again. I was happy to find out about SIRVA last year to know that my experience was known to others.

wow. I had a pretty painful reaction as well. a very swollen, red painful arm. So bad I ended up going back to the doctor in a week to make sure I didn’t have cellulitis – which she wasn’t sure I didn’t have either.

since I have fibromyalgia and probably a torn rotator cuff in that arm, I assumed the pain that continued was related to that but now that I have read this, I am realizing that is when it started that getting a dish out of the cabinet became almost impossible. It’s better now but still weak. I never used to get the flu shot but then got pneumonia and a lung nodule (benign.) I figured the last thing I need, as I turn 61, is the real flu. (not just a virus like people confuse the real flu.) I was told that each year you get a shot in the same arm, the pain gets worse and worse. I did have rotator cuff and bicep repair in my right arm so won’t do that side. I also have RSD in both feet that can spread. I will rethink ever getting one again now that I know this is a thing. thanks as usual for getting out this info to the public. btw, I am another health professional – RN.

This year was the first time in over 5 years that I got the flu shot, and I only did because I will be out of the country for a month. I had absolutely NO pain from the injection, and even forgot I’d had it until I showered and found the band-aid. I know that if you get a tetanus shot sooner than the recommended 5 years, it is more painful than if you wait longer. Perhaps getting a flu shot every year makes people more sensitive to that type of vaccine (yes, I know the ingredients are not the same every year, but they are related). Any thoughts?

I was told by a friend this advice given by a nurse:
When receiving a shot high on the arm, immediately after the injection, swing the arm close to the body in a windmill fashion. Do it both ways at least twice, then rotate the entire arm, both directions, hands down a few times.

I think this advice must help the shot’s contents absorb faster.

I followed the advice, have share this information with a few folks, and we all can report good results.

I have always gotten flu shots and never had a problem. Then I started taking aloe vera pills and my arm was incredibly sore where I had gotten flu shots in the past. About the shoulder pain after the flu shot. My pain lasted over 6 weeks. At my annual physical this month I mentioned to the PA about the flu shot, which I got at my work. She said that if a patient in my doctor’s office asks that the shot be given lower in the arm, they’ll accommodate. I’ll definitely go to the doctor’s office for my flu shot next time. A friend of mine suggested a tip that her doctor had told her: drink some kefir every day. I nodded politely and went on with my day wondering what the heck kefir was, probably some new fad.

It took me a year or so before I decided to give it a try and it worked! My husband thought I was nuts but when he started sneezing or feeling a cold coming on I would make him a smoothie – slipping some kefir in with the yogurt and juice. Finally I told him my trick. He still though I was nuts until he was sick and staying home from work.

A few days while running some errands he started sneezing and feeling sick again so I bought kefir and forced him to drink some right then and there. Much to his surprise it worked. And continues to work. It’s your gut bacteria out of wack that the kefir is bolstering, allowing your immune system to function better. Such a simple thing to try, maybe it will work for you.

I received a flu shot for 20 years, every year when I was in the USAF, still got the flu 5 times and had mild reactions every year, headaches, fever, body aches. I have been retired for 20 years and not had a single flu shot or the flu, my wife has not had the flu either. I have 4 adult children who do not get the shots anymore and no flu, either. I am 60 now and will take my chances, the side effects are just not worth it. My sister’s arm was very sore for over 6 months after her last shot. No more shots for her either.

Here’s some info that may or may not be a contributing factor to the flu shot injection site issue…
My sister and I religiously and dutifully get our flu shots each year. Two years ago, I experienced the same sort of painful issues described by so many of your readers, but my sister did not; we both had the same type/dose. My injection that year was administered very high into my deltoid muscle. The issue eventually cleared, but took several months.
This past year when flu shot time arrived, I asked the same pharmacy to administer the injection as low into my deltoid as possible, which the pharmacist did. I had no lingering reaction to the shot. However, my sister (same vaccine) DID experience trouble from her last injection, which was administered high into her deltoid muscle. Whether injection site is a contributing factor remains to be seen. However, due to our experiences, in the future my sister and I will request that our flu injections be administered as low as possible into the muscle.

I also had a reaction to the flu shot this year. I had a dull aching pain and loss of range of motion and limited strength. I thought at first that my shoulder was following the pattern of my right arm which had been treated with painful cortisone shots for calcified tendonitis. Being new to the area I did not have a physician. I panicked thinking my arm would get to the point of my right arm if i didn’t do anything about it. I found on Youtube a physician who demonstrated exercises to perform to stop a “frozen” shoulder from getting any worse. It was like a miracle but within 2 days it was much better and eventually back to normal. I had a physician tell me not to get shots in that arm anymore…….I am out of arms now

    How to avoid the flu?

Eat right, keep hydrated and take your C.
    Wash hands and exercise.
The interesting thing is that most Americans do not.

I have been getting the flu shot since I was in my late 30’s. I am now 56. Back then if you were not a senior they didn’t give it to you unless you had some type of illness or disease. I was told that because I had asthma that I must get it.

I went through years of having a painful arm for weeks or months afterwards, most times at the site of the injection it would be very hot and would swell up. When I was going to stop getting the shots, my doctor told me to get the thimerosal free (thimersol is a mercury based preservative) shot. They are hard to find and if they do have them they go fast, so now I always book the first appointment at my doctors office when they have a flu clinic. I have never had another reaction.
