Overview
Prozac was the first of a new generation of antidepressants to come on the market. It works by enhancing the action of a brain chemical called serotonin. In a few short years this drug has become so popular that, in addition to becoming the most prescribed antidepressant on the physicians’ hit parade of drugs, it has become a household name.
This antidepressant medication has been featured on the covers of newsmagazines and has even been the subject of a best-selling book (Listening to Prozac). This success comes largely because it is less likely to cause typical side effects associated with older medications.
Tricyclic antidepressants like Elavil, Tofranil, Sinequan and Pamelor can produce dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, weight gain, and a sluggish or lethargic feeling. Prozac does not.
If anything, it has a slight stimulant action.
Prozac is used in the treatment of depression; it is also approved for treating obsessive compulsive disorder. Psychiatrists continue to experiment with the use of this medication for eating disorders and other problems.
Side Effects and Interactions
Side effects associated with Prozac include headache, nervousness, agitation, insomnia, tremor, fatigue, rash, lightheadedness, drowsiness, dizziness, depersonalization, nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach pain, sweating and dry mouth.
Somewhat less common adverse reactions include impaired concentration and memory, weird dreams, lowered libido, loss or delay of orgasm, abnormal ejaculation, dry skin, constipation, hair loss and itching. Report any symptoms to your physician promptly.
Uncommon but very serious side effects to be alert for are rash with flulike symptoms such as chills, fever or sore throat, anemia, breathing problems, severe allergy, or seizures.
Prozac interacts with a number of other medications. Anyone taking other antidepressants, especially drugs such as Nardil, Marplan or Parnate should stop such a medicine at least two weeks before starting on Prozac.
If Prozac was taken first, five weeks should elapse before starting on one of these other medicines, because Prozac can last in the body a long time.
Tricyclic antidepressants like Elavil or Tofranil and even Anafranil for obsessive-compulsive disorder may have stronger actions and more pronounced toxicity when they are combined with Prozac. If such a combination is prescribed, the physician should monitor blood levels of the medications. The same is true of the antipsychotic drug Haldol.
If the amino acid tryptophan ever becomes available in this country again, it should not be taken with Prozac, as it may increase the potential for adverse reactions.
Other compounds that could cause complications in combination with Prozac include lithium, Coumadin, Lanoxin and Valium (or similar medications such as Dalmane, Halcion or Klonopin).
Interactions between the herb St. John’s wort and Prozac are possible. Switching between antidepressants and herbal treatment calls for medical guidance (physicians can find a suggested protocol for gradual substitution of St. John’s wort in Hyla Cass’s book, St. John’s Wort: Nature’s Blues Buster).
Check with your pharmacist and physician before taking any other medicines or herbs.
Special Precautions
Some people may need very close monitoring if the doctor prescribes this medication. Because this drug may cause anxiety, nervousness and insomnia in a substantial number of people, those with a predisposition to such conditions need to alert their physicians if such symptoms are aggravated by Prozac.
Patients with kidney disease, diabetes, liver problems or a history of seizures also require careful monitoring while they are taking Prozac.
People with a history of suicide attempts must also be extremely vigilant. There have been reports that some people may develop a preoccupation with suicide or violence while taking Prozac. It is still not certain whether this is caused by the underlying mental condition or is in some way related to the drug.
Family members must help monitor people on taking this medication for suicidal thoughts or self-destructive behaviors. The doctor must be notified immediately in such cases.
Taking the Medicine
According to the manufacturer, you can take Prozac with or without food. If it upsets your stomach you may find that swallowing it with meals may be helpful.

I have had the exact same thing happen to me. The burp, the powder, the burn. I have had this happen more than once. I tried taking the med in the morning after I eat and before bed. Time of day doesn’t seem to help. I found no pattern, and it only happens once in a while, but it is HORRIBLE!! Have you ever found an answer on this? Any additional information will help.

Wow!! This was originally published in 2000! I was prescribed fluoxetine in 2004 and just weaned myself off of it within the last three months. Issues that I thought we just pertaining to “getting older” disappeared! My stomach acid issue has stopped, my dry skin issue has stopped, my “fogginess” has cleared, and I have had the first orgasm in over 5 years! After reading the book “Lost Connections” by Johann Hari- I realized that I was prescribed an anti-depressant when I was going through a very difficult time that SHOULD have made me sad, weepy, and anxious!
What I never did (until now) was address that issue! Instead I listened to my doctor and turned to medication to “control the symptoms”. My doctor never once asked if I had things going on in my life to cause these issues. I have never felt better and will NEVER rely on long term medications again! There are alternatives out there and find an integrative doctor that helps you get to the root of the problem- not just mask the symptoms!

I am a little worried! I just had the same effect as Melissa in 2013, I took my medication as normal and about 5 minutes later I burped and a powder came out and went into my lungs and nose. Is this something I should be worried about? It burned so bad I’m just worried that it is going to cause problems as I have severe asthma.

I have gained some weight taking 20 mg’s of Prozac and I am wondering if I would cut it down to 5mg’s if it would be easier to lose weight.

My son started taking fluoxetine after 2 suicide attempts. He was prescribed the drug after he first suicide attempt and the second attempt was while he was taking fluoxetine. After starting the tablets for 2 weeks I noticed a huge improvement in his mood – so much happier, laughing and making jokes. Nothing seemed to stress him out, he was totally chilled.
Which is why the second suicide attempt come as such a shock and I worry every hour of the day, analyse his every movement. And if I try to call him while I’m out and he doesn’t answer I completely panic! Since taking the meds he’s starting acting really strange. Almost phsychotic. Making weird faces, and the other day he said he had an out of body experience where he felt like he kinda left his body. I’m concerned about this tablet now but worry about how he’ll be without it.

I just started taking Fluoxetine 10 mg yesterday which I am to combine with Bupropion in 4 weeks as a “cocktail” in attempt to treat major depression/generalized anxiety disorder/panic disorder that I’ve been suffering for several years. The panic disorder began 2 years ago and that made me spiral into an extremely severe agoraphobic further isolated state which has been all but impenetrable to treatment so far. In addition, I have several co-morbid conditions… Interstitial Cystitis, Fibromyalgia, neuropathy, hypothyroid, pelvic floor dysfunction, vulvodynia, as well as other ailments in which I had prior to these conditions which still weave in and out, such as migraines, allergies, IBS. Although, not diagnosed I believe I also have chronic fatigue syndrome/ME. I am extremely sensitive to medications. I develop tolerance very quickly. Within hours of taking my first dose of Fluoxetine yesterday my body tensed up and felt as if all of my pressure points throughout my body were on fire. Especially my shoulders, underarms and hips. I was very afraid to take it again today, but I did and now I’m terrified of going through the same thing again. I want to give this a good shot. I truly do. However, my body is already suffering with such pain and inflammation. The thought of taking something that heightens my suffering to any degree is terrifying and causes in all its’ irony an altogether different type of panic. A panic that rests on some edge inside. I don’t know if that makes any sense. But, I wonder if anyone else has experienced this? If anyone else is sensitive to antidepressants for whatever varied reasons? I’ve always been most sensitive to anti-depressants, save benzos, for as long as I can remember and that just seems to have worsened to impossible with the onset of all the conditions I ail with. I know this is an older thread, but any shared experience would be helpful just to know I’m not alone.

I took Prozac (Teva/Pliva generic) about one year ago, and it worked wonders.
This year my depression came back, and so I decided to resume taking it. Things were progressing great like the first time, but then my prescription was changed to Sandoz, which I only realized a few weeks later after feeling awful.
Now I am back on the original (Pliva) but am not getting better like I did before.
Any thoughts? And has anyone switched back to their original generic and experienced successes or failures? Thanks in advance for the responses.

Have been taking 20 mg generic Prozac for years. On my most recent refill the manufacturer was changed to Sandoz. Within 2 weeks I was deeply depressed as I use to be 15 years ago before I started Prozac. Don’t understand but am changing back to my usual generic brand AUG.

John, did it end up working out for you? Thanks in advance for your response.

Hi. I am 87 and have had several bad anxiety bouts from age 25 to having one currently. I have always struggled with them and often felt desperate leading to panic attacks The physical symptoms have mostly varied although palpitations have always been a factor to a varying degree. Constipation usually a physical symptom.
I had banging and snapping in my earliest attack at 25 years of age at night in my head. The attacks have varied as a problem from several months to 2 years duration and then only subsided due to medication of Tofranil after the first attack in which I received no help from the doctors at all but did get blank stares. This was in 1950. At that time the average doctor hadn’t a clue how to react and medication for most was nil. However, most of my life for the main has been good. Bouts would only start at times of feeling trapped in a given predicament and could see no easy way out. I inherited it from my father who committed suicide at 44. Wish I’d had more of my mother’s genes! But what I did have has pulled me through life. Thankfully. Anxiety attacks are hell. Depression is a lot more than just feeling fed up as some who know no better think!!

I was prescribed 20 mg of Prozac in early august, went back in to see my dr in late/early September because my anxiety was horrible and he upped my dosage to 40 mg and put me on 2mg Ativan and atenolol. Its been going well so far, I’m lost 23 lbs since my first appointment with this dr. I have energy, my social anxiety is almost gone.
I don’t get all shaky and red faced when I’m in a room full of strangers. However, I’m still having major panic attacks so I’m going to see about going with Xanax instead of Ativan, I have ptsd and severe anxiety. The Prozac gives me a ton of energy, I’m always hyped up and I sweat a lot more and barely have an appetite but its giving me motivation to keep working out. If I don’t don’t take Ativan or Xanax with the Prozac I get bad insomnia. Other than that I’ve had a good experience with it.

As with you I just started this medication about a week ago and I’ve yet to feel a difference. I lost my spouse a little over a year ago and decide it was finally time to do something about it. I’m currently also on 2 mg of xanax a day cause I still have horrible flash backs of her death. She went in her sleep in bed with me and our son. Horrific! Should I be afraid of the withdrawal when I decide to come off this? I, too, have developed a social anxiety disorder since the incident. Also, I keep reading about weight loss. This scares me as I’m 5’2 and 110 lbs. I can’t lose anymore weight! Although the peppiness you all are talking about I NEED! I heard prozac blocks amphetamines such as adderall and things which is kinda weird considering the depression and anxiety I have, not only make me fatigued and with no energy, and now I’m hearing that prozac completely blocks the effects of stimulants which help me greatly. Any thoughts? I’d really appreciate getting some feedback since this definitely isn’t something you post on fb…..thank you xoxo

I had problems with this brand. I was hearing voices, and suicidal thoughts….. I too am looking for a generic that works like the real thing. One is 350.00 month, the other 6.00 month.

Hi ppl. I recently started taking Prozac 40 mg r/t anxiety. Before that I had taken Effexor 75 xr roughly ten years ago for the same thing and it went away and I would take the Effexor off and on when I felt my anxiety start up. My dr that prescribed the Effexor years ago was the same one who changed me to Prozac. I saw him a week after starting it and I really felt no different. It’s been 7 weeks now and still feel anxiety throughout the day but I feel like I can concentrate more than previous at times. I’m a nurse, father.

I have been taking prozac for little over four years, It helped me soooooo much. I don‘t know where I would be without it.

I have been on and off Prozac for the last 20 years. Currently I am taking 60mg of Sandoz fluxotine and have noticed very little positive effect. It has been 4 weeks now and I am wondering about the manufacturer and how much time before the drug will work for my depression. I barely can make it to work, house is a mess, and I have suicidal thoughts occasionally. Prozac has always worked for me in the past but now I just feel lethargic and sad and disinterested in just about everything. If anyone knows specifically about the manufacturer Sandoz fluxotine please email me.

Wow, lots of different experiences. Prozac was the first antidepressant I ever took, back in 1992 before it was dispensed like candy. I was in college, barely functioning, not eating, and praying for death to take me. I flew home for Thanksgiving break and my father had a psychiatrist ready to see me. She gave me Prozac and in about two days I felt a 180 degree turn. My brain chemistry was clearly a mess, and I feel it saved my life… back then I felt it was worth saving, Now, again, this was 1992, when ppl who REALLY needed it got it. Not every random person who had a bad day, I took it for some years. Orgasms damn near impossible (female). Basically it just stopped working and for 22 years or so I’ve been on various cocktails of drugs. It’s frustrating. Nothing ever gave me suicidal thoughts, because I already had them and still do sometimes.
But, like I said, looking back I would say Prozac saved my life. I was seeking ways to end it. Unfortunately, in a half-assed fashion, I still do. And no drug is going to change that. But at least I can function.

Hello All,
I was prescribed Fluoxetine August of 2012. At That point I had been on crutches for 8 1/2 months. (Torn ligament diagnosed as a sprain at first)But because I was injured so long, I had to move out of my nice apt and in w/ my folks till I could get back on my feet (pun intended!). My Dr. suggested trying 20 mg of Fluoxetine because I seamed depressed.(Go figure)
I was very happy with the results. I did not notice any of the side effects (well..except the no climax thing) and it really did help with all that was going on at the time. (like squeezing an established life into my old bdrm…on crutches)
So, back to the wrongly diagnosed foot problem. Because I had an injury that went untreated for so long I ended up W/ nerve damage in the foot. This apparently called for Gabapentin 400 mg to make it possible to walk after physical rehab did not do the trick.
Whether it was Gabapentin alone or in combo w/ the Fluoxetine, I am having *such* brain fog. I forget words, go to get something I’m holding, shave the same leg twice, say hello all over again to someone I just greeted 3 min’s ago. This is not working for me. Sure I can walk, but I’m used to being clear minded.
I also ‘lose time’. I’ll be washing dishes and will not be sure how much time has passed. I’ll realize that there is someone in front of me and that I may have been talking to them…but now, I’m just standing there staring at them. YES! I was talking to them… but about what… never mind, they just walked away.
Based on this something has got to go. Since the 20th I have been taking the Fluoxetine every other day and now intend to take it every 3 days for about 2 weeks to bow out safely. Since I have been on it for quite awhile, I feel confident that it is time to get off of the prescription anyhow. I did let my Dr know about my ‘flight plan’ last month. She says the side effects I am feeling are normal. But I can not function like this.
So far so good getting off the prescription. If I would benefit from a anti-depressant in the future, I would absolutely go back on Fluoxetine.

Does anyone else experience abnormal/weird dreams with fluoxetine??? I am being to wonder if my abnormal dreams are the cause of this pill. I am not complaining because for me they help A LOT!!! I can tell when I don’t take them. I feel the difference. I worry to though, will I be dependent on them forever now??? Guess I will cross that bridge when I get there right?!

I already had weird dreams before starting prozac. But now my dreams are super weird and crazy. But thats okay with me cause I like dreaming. Its like living in an alternate universe. And in my dreams I have no anxiety or panic attacks. I’ll think about it but it doesn’t happen.

I had to stop taking it after 4 weeks on it as I had really severe side effects, my doctor told me the tablets will take 5 weeks to get out of my system, I am just over 5 weeks off them now and still having severe stomach and back pain and excuse this by loose bowel movements, although thank god the sudden bowel movements I was having daily on the stuff has stopped since I went cold turkey off them. Not sure if I am having withdrawl symptoms as they are not out of my system but it is a pain, may have to go back to the docs again.

The same thing just happened to me when I took my dose. I had some indigestion and burped and powder actually came out that looked like smoke. My throat hurts so much right now that is why I came on here to read blogs! It works well for my mental state but I do notice a major delay in orgasm and the fact that it burns my stomach and now my throat isn’t the greatest.
aaa
Hi SO,
yes I have experienced delay of orgasm on 20-60mg of fluoxetine a day.
It has improved over the years if I am highly aroused, it has taken a while though but it should come back even if delayed.
I never want to come off this medication as I have my happiness back and can laugh again now (been on it 12 years)
Good luck

I am taking 40mg of Lily Fluoxitine in the morning – the worst side effect has been extreme fatigue! I can sleep all day – it’s debilitating!

Hello all. I’m writing about possible discontinuation side effects of Prozac. After going from brand to generic to brand, I had what I can only describe as symptoms of “excess serotonin” (I know this from internet research and a previous experience bumping up the dose on my own.) I went off and felt immediately better.
For 6 weeks I was off the 20 mg I had been taking. It was the longest I had been off of an SSRI for 15 years. I had some brain zaps, but that was about it. During that time, I took something called, “Ashwagandha”– an herb that is an adaptogen. I stopped that after a month when I doubled the dose (I had only been taking half the recommended dose at that time) and felt “weird”.
A few days later, I tried to go back on the Prozac– 10mg/day for three days. I had what felt like a minor allergic reaction. So I stopped that was two weeks ago. So in total, 8 weeks have elapsed since I stopped the Prozac.)
5 days ago, I got a nasty bout of diarrhea. I NEVER get diarrhea. Never. I’ve had digestion problems, but never with that. I thought it was something I ate. But 5 days later, I have gas, bloating, fullness and loose stools. I’ve had searing stomach pain.
At this point, I’m not sure if it’s a flu bug, or discontinuation symptoms from the Prozac.
Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.
AJ

It sounds like what I had taking them and also off them, my doc said it can last up to 5 weeks after stopping the tablets, although I am still getting the stomach pains and back ache and depending what I eat loose stools, a few things might help though avoid foods with fibre such as wholemeal bread and cereals and also spicy foods I found these really made everything worse, also would recommend gaviscon to help with the stomach found it helped me a lot. My doctor told me all this was caused by a reaction to the drug and what it does it strip your stomach and bowel linings which will need time to repair after the drug is totally out of your system, hope this helps.

I have been taking (generic) Prozac for 10+ years. Because it was working fine for me, I never questioned anything, or even realized that there were multiple manufacturers for the generic Fluoxetine until finally reaching my breaking point today. After literally vomiting after taking my daily dose of 40 mg Fluoxetine (manufacturer- Northstar, big blue pill with 40 and A107 on it), I decided I HAD to do something.
My dosage changed in June 2012, and I have been suffering with anywhere from dull non-stop headaches to blinding migraines, terrible acid indigestion/heartburn, and general not-feeling-wellness. I was taking my Rx at night because of the drowsiness that can occur. But then I switched to morning as I couldn’t take the acid reflux that kept me up every night.
Then I was getting headaches nearly every day… and the acid reflux came back, even after several rounds of Prilosec (Omeprazole) and Prevacid (Lansoprazole) and loads of TUMS. Today I took it with my breakfast and promptly vomited. I’ve had enough.
After reading through all of these comments and several other forums, I am going to ask the doctor to lower the dose to 20mg and take the Rx to Walgreens, who carries the manufacturer Sandoz. (Wal-Mart carries Northstar.) It seems as though many people have the most trouble with TeVa, Aurobindo, and Northstar. It seemed BARR was good, but then was bought by TeVa and now is not.
I am hoping for some relief. I would just ask them to write for the BRAND name Prozac, but I don’t have health insurance, and the cost I was quoted was $266/30 day supply. I want to TRY switching manufacturers before I spend the money. I am hoping for good results. Wish me luck!

Please investigate this program from Lilly – they provide FREE medications to those of us who can’t afford them – check out the details – have your Dr fill out a Rx on the appropriate page of the application – it appears that they accept your statement of your financial status. I have applied and am just waiting for the meds (Prozac) to arrive at my Doc’s office for me to pick up.
There are many other patient assistance programs – Google for any medication that you are on to find out what’s available. Also in North Carolina there is MedAssist – provides FREE name brand meds – no generics – fantastic program.

The first time I started an antidepressant I used the name brand Prozac 10mg for about 2 years back in 96. Now I’m back on meds after the third time on I have been taking the generic Fluoxetine 20mg for 1 week had some side effects not major but I know its different then the actual name brand Prozac. I’m calling my Psych to see if I can get the name brand even if I have to pay out of pocket more. I have people telling me that the generic is the same as the name brand in my opinion it is not. I do continue taking the medication for now till I can see my Doctor.

5 days on Fluoxetine now. Im only 16… I feel like there is no point in life. Im obsessed with death and its all I think about. Im terrified of dying so much I make myself sick. I felt this often before but more so now that I started taking Fluoxetine. Its getting worse everyday. I don’t know if I should stop taking it or not, is this only a side effect? please help

Lo, talk to your parents and your doctor. But the reason your stomach and throat are sore is because you are not eating something substantial enough well before you take your meds. Don’t eat just a piece of toast, for example – eat a whole meal then take your meds. And 4 days is not long enough to feel an effect. It will take a few weeks and then the sleepiness will go away and you will feel capable. It will help with sleeping patterns. But you must – MUST – eat something very substantial BEFORE taking the meds.
Lo
I have been taking Fluoxetine for only 4 days. My stomach feels so sore and upset and feel like my depression has gotten worse? Hi peoples
try calling independent pharmacies… I’ve heard that they are more likely to order a particular generic. It also sounds like Sandoz is a better one then some.

Hi,
did you stop taking them?? I was given them by my GP for slight panic attacks, since staring them nearly 4 weeks ago I feel miserable, depressed, don’t want to socialize and constantly feel sick and get bad head aches. should I just stop?

Hello,
I am happy to report that, per my last post on July 7th, I am now back on brand name Prozac. What troubles me is that my doctor didn’t write, “No substitutions” on her prescription, and thus I was put on the generic unnecessarily, IMO. The insurance does not, and never has had, any problems with supplying the brand name.
My only “concern” is that I seem to be experiencing side effects on the brand. I have all of the classic start up symptoms– headache, stomach ache, nausea, dizziness, increased anxiety and agitation. It is awful, awful, awful! And I’m only on the 20mg that I was on before.
I should mention that while I was on the generic of prozac for two weeks, I was so depressed that I decided to add in Wellbutrin (generic) That lasted for 10 days (at 150mg/day) and then I cut it off cold turkey- because I realized that the initial increase in depression was from the generic. HOWEVER, I stopped the WB OVER 3 weeks ago, so I have no idea if my “trial” on Wellbutrin back then is affecting how I’m feeling now.
Any thoughts/similar experiences/words of comfort/advice? :)
AllieJ
You mentioned tapping in your comment. Tapping as in EFT? Just curious. I’ve done some of that and I really like it. Hard to tell how much of an effect it has, but in the moment, tapping is soothing…

After 4 years of taking generic Paxil (which worked really well and was a life saver at the time), I started to feel sluggish and hated the weight gain. I slowly and successfully weaned off Paxil while adding in generic Prozac. This all happened during a stable period in my life. As things got more difficult, I tried Zoloft, Lexapro, Cymbalta– all generics. I kept coming back to Prozac though.
I also take klonopin. And yes, you guessed it. I was on one generic and when I switched to TEVA, bam, withdrawal. And withdrawal from benzos is NOT pretty.
I digress. I think that taking brand Klonopin made me think, “Hey I want to take brand Prozac!” Everything seemed to be fine, although admittedly, I probably should have been on a dose higher than 20mg. Just last month I was told that my insurance hadn’t approved the brand name Prozac. I figured, “no biggie”. But just like with the klonopin, I noticed a difference. Much more depressed and hopeless. It’s taken a good month for me to realize that it’s the generic. Some manufacturer called “Pliva”.
When I was on brand Prozac, it was costing me $20/month as opposed to $10. That’s chump change. You’d better believe that I am going to fight tooth and nail to get back on brand name Prozac. It’s a huge relief reading here about people’s reactions to generics. And I am older now and think my body is more sensitive. So tolerating generics when I was younger may have just been where I was at. Now, not so much.
Good luck, all!

I have been on prozac now for a few days now, but when I was younger I had to take it for a few years. I do not like having to take it.

Ok, I tried to stick with the TEVA generic fluoxetine for a few months. It wasn’t pretty. My moods changed off and on. Wasn’t sure if I was better with or without, so experimented with both. My stomach hurt all the time, I vomited frequently if I made myself eat. My throat was irritated form taking the capsules. Finally decided I would go without, since my husband kept asking me if I had “taken my pill”.
Now haven’t had it (or anything else) in 2 months. It’s been a stressful 2 months because we’re trying to sell our house, but I’ve been feeling much better and my moods now are evening out and I feel “normal” again, and drug free!!! Yippie. I’m trying “tapping” now for stressful times and it seems to work very well.

Been on Fluoxetine made by Activas here in the UK for 3 weeks now and am starting to feel much better after 10 days or so of mild side effects.I can’t believe it is so expensive in the US.Here in England an NHS prescription for a month costs £7.80 and it’s free if you are out of work or unemployed. This counts for ALL medicines.I’m taking 20mg daily, yellow and green capsule,my anxiety now seems to be subsiding greatly…I’m going to see how I feel after a few months and keep you posted!

I took Prozac for about ten years and it was great. When switched to generic it stopped working.
Not crazy
I was on prozac/generic? For about 6 months and although I did not have the adverse effects many mention. I felt “too good” on prozac. Switched over to celexa and was on it for almost ten years. Got off of it and have been in a major depression since July of 2012. I am trying St. John’s wort, but am not sure what to do as even though I have been taking the St. John’s wort for a few weeks and feel no improvement. Am also seeing a therapist but days spent in bed and no energy are making me suicidal. Any advice?

I’ve been on Prozac (brand name only) since about 1992. It worked great for me for many years. When it went generic, I was getting Sandoz sometimes and it worked fine…just the same as the brand name capsule.
Then my pharmacy started giving me Teva!!! BAD NEWS. The stuff doesn’t work for me. I tried it and kept on it thinking it was me…to no avail. It did nothing and the depression I’d missed for years started coming back along with all the other symptoms.
Told my doc and he made the prescription “Prozac brand name only”. Unfortunately, even Wal-Mart wanted to charge me over $900 for 3 months supply! I can’t afford that, so went back to the Sandoz when I could get it. Pharmacy told me they couldn’t specify the generic they got. It was the “luck of the draw”. So I guess I’m at their mercy.
O's worried momma
My daughter 6 yrs old has been on 20 mg of the green and white capsule for 3 mths she was a excessive crier and always moody and sad since on meds she doesn’t cry as much seems happy most of the time but doesn’t respond to discipline and refuses to follow rules without argument she seems like she doesn’t care for others unless it benefits her also she has start lying all the time even when we see her do things she lies to our face and seems to believe the lies… I don’t know what to do or if we should change meds please help me!! I have two other children and they are suffering because of her behavior as well!

I am 48, took brand name Prozac when I was 26 for about 8 months and thought it was effective but lost too much weight. Now I suffer from migraines and my doc suggested trying low dose – 10mg. No drug coverage, so I tried Teva at Walmart. (I did read all posts and thought long and hard about taking, since I wasn’t depressed but felt migraines were brain related).
I think the Teva has caused terrible GERD and digestion changes. I feel very removed from myself/the world and I feel more anxious – first symptom of taking the drug was this tight chest, anxiety feeling.
At 26, the symptoms I recall on brand name 20mg was sleepy and thirsty and didn’t want bread/carbs. This time and with generic, very different experience but my body is completely different at this age, I’m sure.
I do want to wean off of it so I’m cutting in half – if anyone has advice on best way to get off, please let me know.

I was recently given Aurobindo 20MG fluoxetine capsules when my Walgreens pharmacy changed vendors. After a few weeks on the Aurobindo capsules, all symptoms of depression returned. I have since sourced a different vendor for my Fluoxetine (my Walmart sources from Teva), and have returned to feeling “normal”.
PLEASE REPORT ANY ADVERSE REACTIONS TO THE AUROBINDO FLUOXETINE TO THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION. THIS CAN BE DONE ON LINE.
I have already reported my comments regarding the Aurobindo Fluoxetine, noting to them that there is already anecdotal evidence on line that in my and many other people’s opinions, the Aurobindo 20mg capsules may not in fact contain the stated amount of fluoxetine (or in fact may contain some other drug).

I’m so sorry u went through this
I was on it last year for depression and I Become someone I wasn’t I already had the I don’t care going on from the depression I didn’t clean, cook, take care of my family, I started thinking that my husband was my problem and I wasn’t happy beenatried for 18 yrs anyhow I starting think things I had never in my whole life and pushed everyone that I loved away from me and starting looking for someone to make me happy to the point that I was gonna cheat… My husband stuck by me for a year even after I stopped taking them it took me a year to come out of that feeling… I thought I was just going through the change of life or something till my husband was on them for a few months for panic attacks and he is not himself now pushing me away and the people he use to talk to about stuff he has cut out of his life, I blame this drug for it we was both on the same thing started at twenty and then up to forty… Fluoxentine

I am so glad I found all your comments. I was on the Barr generic that worked well for me. Then Walmart changed manufactures and it stopped working. CVS had Barr until about 2 or so yrs ago. I can not afford Prozac. It will be over $200 with insurance. So my dr switched me to Wellbutrin/buporpion. It does NOT work as well as fluexotine. I got suicidal, angry, depressed and in general useless.
Dr added Viibryd along with Burporion 150mg. As the 300XL did not work at all! Viibryd helped with the moods but I got brain zaps I thought were mini strokes as well as CHRONIC diaherra. I got off the zviibryd and those numerous symptoms stopped.
I hear Sandoz? Does it work? And the Northstar? I liked my Prozac better than any I’ve had. I’m currently back to all the anger and on the verge of uselessness.
My dr said FDA IF THEY CHECKED can have up to 75% of the working ingredient.
So which generic seems to work and where do you find it? I sure would like to feel better. I have not felt like myself for the last 2 yrs. Last yr being the worst! My poor family!
Thanks for listening.

I started on generic Prozac (Fluoxetine by Teva 20mg in November 2012) I was then upped to 40MG a month later and have been on that dosage for 2months now. I like my “happy” pill. I feel normal. I can function now however I now have a constant dull headache at least once or twice a week, my period is SUPER heavy for 2days. My period is also longer – I went from 3-4 days to 6-7 day cycles. I still have a high sex drive and able to climax.
I have noticed though in the past week that I am getting frequent nosebleeds – like every other day. And for the first time today, I “tasted” my pill. It felt like an explosion/eruption of gas in my throat! It was DISGUSTING to say the least. I read all the threads here and I am now debating changing my pharmacy (Walmart) to Walgreens but I called them and they carry the generic Aurobindo?
Should I keep calling around and see if any local pharmacy carries Sandoz or should I stick with what I currently have?

I have used fluoxetine for many years. I have experienced muscle weakness, has anyone else? I tried Cymbalta, but had side effects-palpitations. I have gone back to fluoxetine because it works, but my muscles just do not relax.

My 49 year old daughter is on prozac and she had a very heavy period and a nose bleed. Is this safe to take?
Laura
I have recently noticed that taking the green and orange capsule generic made by AUROBINDO erupts in my throat when I take it. It is awful and seems to happen no matter what or when I take it with. I have been on Prozac for years and this is the first time I have ever experienced anything like this. I already have GERD and am afraid I am further damaging my esophagus. It tastes and feels awful every time. It burns. I spoke to the pharmacist and he said he never heard of this before. Should I stop so I don’t further harm my throat?
deanna
My 8 year old daughter takes 30mg of fluoxetine a day for OCD. She has done pretty well but I can tell the difference between the pill and the green and white capsule. She responded better to the capsule than the pill. So far she is still very outgoing, extremely energetic and happy. I am glad this medication helps with reliving a lot of her anxiety and symptoms of OCD. So far the only negative side effect has been dry skin that she just started getting since taking the pill.

Amelia, the best thing to do is to wait it out and pay close attention to your own reactions. Realize that many people are on Prozac – there are those that respond well, those who respond badly, and those who respond not-at-all. For your own treatment, you need to learn which you are. It’s good to be educated on what could happen and things to keep an eye out for, but realize that every medication has risks and rewards.
Amelia M.
Alright guys, my name is Amelia and I am 20 years old. Pretty darn scared after reading about this medicine. I was just prescribed Fluoxetine for my severe anxiety, depression, and according to doctors, it will help my VesoVegal Syncope. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it basically means my heart rate increases and drops randomly and I faint. I took the Fluoxetine today around 7pm, and I got an instant high. I’m only taking 10mg and after a week they want to bump me up to 20mg. In Minnesota, it is 11pm and I still feel slightly high and I cannot sleep, which is unfortunate because I work in the morning!
My doctor told me to experiment with times I should take it. Morning or night. Obviously night is not a good idea but I also do not want to be high during the day at work when I take it in the morning..
Can anyone give me positives to this drug and can anyone give me negatives?
I read about the lowered sex drive.. and the loss of orgasm completely? Not very fond of that… And I also do not like the fact that suicide rates and thoughts go up..
Can anyone help me?
TH
I am a highly educated professional and parent. Several years ago, my doctor prescribed Prozac to help me with short-term insomnia. She told me fatigue was the only side effect. Ten days later, with no history of depression or anxiety, I had one mission: I needed to kill myself. I wasn’t sad. Wasn’t angry. Just had a direction I needed to follow, and it wasn’t negotiable.
I sent my children to my mother’s house in another state (all teenagers and self-absorbed–they had no idea I was upset), got a handgun from my safe, and shot myself in the chest.
For people who think suicide is fast and easy, let me tell you it is not. I never lost consciousness. Laid on my garage floor for about 7 hours vomiting blood in excruciating pain. I wasn’t able to move much. Lost vision in my right eye. Just kept waiting for the end. My ex-husband broke into my house and found me… he doesn’t know why. My last memory is being put under at the trauma center.
When I woke up, a week later, a doctor asked me why I was taking Prozac. I told him for insomnia. He then explained that he was a psychiatrist and was going to help me forgive myself for my suicide attempt. He then explained that Prozac can have a side effect in some people of suicidal ideation, and he asked if I knew that. I did not.
The power of a medication to alter your brain chemistry to the point of self-destruction is too dangerous to prescribe without stringent warnings. I have become an advocate for people who attempted suicide and suicide survivors. Hundreds of people have shared stories similar to mine, either their own experiences or stories of family and friends. Ninety percent of the time the medication is Prozac.

Help! I WAS PRESCRIBED GENERIC PROZAC FOR ANXIETY.. I took it for a week but then the nausea got to me? I haven’t took it in 3 days.. but I’m still nauseated and dizzy. How long does it take to get out of your system? I don’t need to lose anymore weight and I’m hungry but every time I eat I throw up. I want to help flush this drug out of my system so I can feel better. My Dr. prescribed a new med for me. But I don’t want
To take it until I feel better. And what is with the feeling I have something stuck in my esophagus? And I’m real sleepy. Please help me.

Hope all is well

I have been on Prozac and Prozac generics for about 7 years now. In the last several years I have noticed a BIG difference in my response to different generics. In fact I am checking here to see about Fluoxetine 10mg manufactured by Teva. I am combining the 10 mg generic with 20 mg brand name Prozac to save on costs. However, I am once again suffering signs that tell me that one of them is not working… a buzzy sound when I turn my head and very weird dreams and of course, depression. This also happened with another generic manufactured by Northstar: 20 mg capsule : one side light blue/other side dark blue. Those I actually discontinued and got another generic…Teva’s…so far I have not found a recent generic that works for me.

Kristi, I’ve been reading these posts deciding if I should try this or not, I’ve been on every other antidepressant in the world but for some reason my Dr thinks this one might be too strong! ! I don’t understand cause I’ve been on some that I thought I would die and some that I wanted to die and the nightmares is one thing I can’t go through anymore, not those terrible all nighters… But your post sounds exactly like me and what I want. Everyone else talks about the manufacture or brand can u tell me yours and if it did all u hoped? I look forward to your reply, hope all is well. Lyn666

I started taking a new brand Aurobindo and I was on Sandoz and I couldn’t understand why for three weeks I have felt awful, heartburn, stomach pain and anxiety.
DR
My pdoc increased my dosage from 20mg to 30mg. So now Im taking a brand by Aurobindo and for three weeks I have been so sleepy and my stomach hurts and lost my appetite.
GB
I just started taking the generic from Aurobindo and my stomach is killing me with intense pain and indigestion. Can’t help but think that this stuff is doing harm. I’m also yawning like a fool. Not sure how people manage to get through this — I have to stay in bed now less because of depression but because I’m so sick.

I have been taking Prozac for 20 years with very good results. My pharmacist changed this to Lovan which was also successful. I must admit I have always suffered with some nausea while taking these. Recently my pharmacist gave me the generic brand Sandoz and I have noticed a decline in my well being. Could this be the result of the changeover? I am feeling depressed again, anxious, tired and nauseous. Can anyone tell me if this is due to the generic brand?
DJ
I’ve been on a generic version of Prozac 40mg for several years with very good results. For as long as I can remember, my pharmacy has used the Northstar brand of generic Prozac (Fluoxetine). Others have commented that it causes heartburn, and I’ve noticed this as well if I take it first thing in the morning – however if I take it later in the day on a full stomach, there is no problem.
I recently switched to a pharmacy that uses the generic brand Aurobindo and, within 3-4 weeks, had a sharp relapse in the depression. It wasn’t until I did some online research that I found many others who have had a change in results when changing brands of the same drug.
I’m curious to know if anyone out there has experienced problems when changing to Aurobindo Fluoxetine.
cr
I have been on Prozac generics for years with no problems… until my experience with Teva brand. I tried it a year ago as Kaiser had switched me from whatever I was on…. to Teva generic. I can’t begin to tell you the multiple problems that I had. Then Kaiser switched me to “Dista 3105/prozac 20 mg and my problems were decreased…. I think Kaiser was paying a high price for it.
Now, I’m on Medicare with a drug Plan from Humana and they have prescribed Teva again. I cannot tolerate this Teva drug. Any ideas about another generic that a Medicare Drug Plan may find acceptable?

I started taking Prozac about 3 1/2 weeks ago. I was desperate to know if my side effects were normal. I’ve felt so sick that I felt like I should go to ER, cried because of the pain in my stomach, and was just plain scared of how my body was reacting to the med. I have a plethora of side effects that I feel. Some worse than others but they include:
dizzy
blurry eyesight
loss of appetite
headace
yawning
feel like throwing up
nervous
feeling weak
anxious
constipated
taste problems
weight loss
stomach cramps
bleeding from uterus (spotting)
I called my psych on Monday and still waiting to hear back. The nurse said they may have to decrease me dosage for a bit from 20mg to 10mg. I just need to know that there is hope at the end of the tunnel. Is it all worth it? Before I was Anxious and Depressed now I am Anxious, depressed, and all the other 15 things listed above. I can’t live like this…
Kristi L.
DeeDee – While no one drug is right for every person, I know, I can tell you that it’s worth doing what your doctor says and taking it. Prozac has changed my life. I’m able to function now, my sleep patterns are normal, and I don’t feel that overwhelming feeling of hopelessness/sadness/panic. I feel like a normal person, for the first time in my life. My entire view of taking my medication has changed – I look at it like a vitamin I have to take every day. Some people have to take insulin, and I have to take Prozac. It’s just what my body needs.
DEE DEE
I will began taking the generic prozac this weekend in a low dosage for 5 days then the doctor told me after that to start taking it twice in morning. I’m very reluctant but I feel like I’m stuck in neutral as far as getting on with my life!!I know there are things I need to be doing to better myself, but I get this overwhelming sense of sadness panic attacks about anything and everything I set out to a accomplish. I’m really afraid of the side affects but I’ve got to do it, for my own sanity and everyone around me.

Hey guys I’ve only been on my fluoxetine for like 15 days and I can’t say I have felt much different or any negative effects except for a really bad after taste…I’m on the liquid form of it but I had a question. does the liquid form have different manufacturers?
AD
I love love love this pill!!!! I suffer from severe PMDD and once a month it’s like the devil takes over. Since starting prozac I’ve lost weight, been consistent w my moods, diligent w my work outs and keeping my house clean, but most importantly, I can distinguish between real feelings and their validity and my raw illogical emotions! My fiancé suffers from PTSD and he’s scheduled an appointment to talk to his Dr about it. I have had some sleep issues as far as staying asleep- I usually wake up about 4-4:30 for some reason but I almost always get back to sleep. A little diarrhea at first and the sudden loss of appetite in the middle of a meal. Both of which led to some weight loss for me so I’m cool w it!
kelijo
I just got back on fluoxetine hcl and it is the blue light/dark as you said I used to take other generics all white or green and white, with no problems.
I have been getting headaches I never got them on other brands. I feel kind of weird and I didn’t know if it’s just an adjustment period or not a good med for me?
JLR
I’ve been reading comments on fluoxetine manufacturers, has anyone heard of Northstar? And what do you think?
J.D.
Thanks for sharing your experience Paj. It is really weird how different people react to the same medication, yet a different manufacturer. I also was put on Cymbalta for quite awhile, but for me it stopped working after about 1 year. I had been taking Cymbalta not just for depression, but also for fibromyalgia and most importantly my Neuropathy in my legs.
After reading what you wrote it doesn’t look like I will ever want to take Abilify, which seems to be one of the few I haven’t taken yet. You know I also get my meds filled at WalGreen’s, but never thought to contact another pharmacy to see which manufacturer they use. They are the ones that went with a new manufacturer but I can’t remember the one I was on before.
Paj I do hope you found the pills that work for you now. If not keep looking for another manufacturer or possibly a different brand all together. I wish you the best Paj, as I and all the others have been there and know how you are feeling.
P.S: I have been on the up and up! Just need something for panic attacks now as I get them every time I have to see a doctor. ( I know this is the wrong forum but my other issues lie with sling operations that have left my life in chaos. If anyone knows of a forum for this please let me know.
I wish you all the best and will continue to follow up on comments. HUGS!

I have been on Prozac over the last 20 years off and on and it finally stopped working. The last time I took it about 2 years ago I was taking the generic from Barr – the blue and white capsule. I was feeling as if I were in the deepest dark hole there ever was. Doc put me on Cymbalta from which I had a lot of side effects such as palpitations, feeling constant dread, panic attacks, sweats, lightheadedness and general feeling of not being well.
She added Abilify 2 mg which put me over the edge. I was in the worst depression I have ever been in. Finally after living like this for several months, I asked to be put back on Prozac. I was taking the generic from Sandoz which I purchased at Walgreen’s. Then when the prescription ran out I had it filled at CVS pharmacy and low and behold the big blue and white capsules from Barr.
Over the last couple of weeks it has been constant crying spells, arguing with everyone and feeling pretty low. Talked to my doc and she wrote the prescription for Sandoz only generic. Walgreen’s said they didn’t have enough to fill a 90-day supply but said they could get it. They even gave me 3 ($3.00) to get me through until Tuesday when the order comes in.
I am a firm believer that Sandoz is by far superior to Barr. Those blue and white capsules are like taking a placebo. Doc said she had had other patients who complained of the same thing and she had to write prescriptions for a certain generic or name brand. Barr does not work for me!!!!!
J.D.
Becca I was reading on line that it also comes in liquid form. Talk to your doctor and/or your pharmacist and have them switch it. Also check different pharmacies as to the maker of the drug. Different pills by different makers DO taste and work differently. You really need to take it and if it is all a matter of what form it comes in then please try this. Good luck Becca and do let us all know how you are doing.
Becca
I’m 16 and I’ve been on this medicine since I got stress-induced ulcers in 3rd grade, but I never take it.
Every time I try, it feels like swallowing burning gasoline afterwards. I’ve tried eating and drinking before AND after taking them, staying upright and not laying down for at least an hour after taking them, and many other things, but it doesn’t help.
A few months ago I took them in the morning before school, and I had to sit on the bus for over an hour until I got to school before I could get a drink and help it go down.
Even hours after taking the pills, I feel something in the back of my throat, like I’m choking on them
Does anyone else have this problem?
J.D.
Kristi thank you for your kind words. I start the name brand Prozac tomorrow and hope that things will just be on the up and up for me from there. Thanks also for the advice on letting others in to help me during this transition. I just hope I get back to “normal” soon. Thanks again.
Kristi L.
J.D. – I feel your pain, but don’t give up. Remember that this chemical imbalance in us can make reality appear so different than it really is. Do what I do – when I am going through it, I rely on the people I love and trust to help give me some clarity. They are few and far between, but I still count on them.
I had the same problem, and when I switched to a new manufacturer, my depression started to go away. I actually wake up now, and feel like I can do anything. That’s what people without depression don’t understand – it’s not an environmental issue that makes us sad. We feel like we can’t face life, and it’s all because of some little chemicals in our head. Hang in there. I promise you it will get better.
J.D.
Recently, about a month ago, my pharmacy changed Fluoxetine manufacturers. The manufacturer before that I can’t remember but all seemed well. The last couple of weeks I have been down in the dumps, crying all day, and the usual signs of depression. I read on line that Prozac can remain in your system for up to 5 weeks. Well after reading all of this AND your comment I do believe this new manufacturer just isn’t working.
I am waiting for a call back from my Psychiatrist and will ask to specifically be prescribed Prozac! I can’t take this horrible depression, which is getting worse by the day, anymore. I just hope my insurance company doesn’t put up a fight. I don’t want to go back to suicidal thoughts and attempts. I just want to be happy! Please keep me in your thoughts and that all will work out.
Thanks for listening.
Beverly
The same thing happened to me. I have just now started taking the generic form myself I’m afraid of what side effects I might have. Please let me know how you are doing.
Jen
I was on celexa for many years. It just stopped working. My Dr. just switched me over to Prozac. I was given the generic Fluoxetine. I’m nervous to take it.

I’m 16 and started Prozac at 15. I did feel better at first but now I feel like my depression is coming back slowly. I get really bad stomach cramps and feel like throwing up and bad headaches.
barbie
My daughter has had the same issue with it as well-her Dr. said there was no other antidepressant that he could prescribe for her at her age (17). So I called and talked with her pharmacist to see if they had any suggestions and she said to try the tablet form and cut in half and take 1 with breakfast and then like 20-30 min later take the other half. She said it is not under the name Prozac it is called the fluoxitine tablet.
Has anyone had experience with it?
KJL
JW – I don’t believe you’d experience anything different (other than a whole in your pocket from the cost) by using brand name Prozac. People are different – but I’ve had a better experience with the generic. Give it about 4 to 6 weeks. You’ll feel better. I know I did.
jw
I have just (2 weeks now) been changed to generic Prozac. I am so sick, nauseated, but I know I need an antidepressant. Have tried about all the others. Have had weight gain with the others, and do not have an appetite with Fluoxentine. Please help me. Would the non-generic (Prozac) be any different? I feel sick all the time. HELP!!!!!!
DS
I’ve been on prozac for 2 months. I’ve lost my appetite and along with it 18 pounds and counting. I have forgotten what being hungry feels like and I only eat when I get a headache or feel nauseous. I’ve had horrible bouts of diarrhea and nausea. I’m not sure how effective it has been on my depression. I mainly feel apathetic. I’m strongly considering stopping the medication because I’m tired of constantly feeling sick.
Anna
I have been on generic prozac for 9 years and it works great for me.
julie
Hi, I’ve been on Prozac on and off for years, I’ve just come off it but have noticed that I’m starting to feel agitated, lethargic etc, cant be bothered to do anything and in my own little world half the time, I’ve still got some left so I’m going to go back on them, the question I wanted to ask is how do you know what’s generic and what’s not, what’s the difference, mine are fluexotine 20mg and say milpharm limited. Does that mean anything?
BC
I have wrestled with depression and OCD for a number of years now. I have been taking the generic of fluoxetine but recently my pharmacy changed manufacturers. It’s been 3 weeks now and I am in the middle of another depressive episode. Usually last 4-5 days. Very dark and gut wrenching. After reading the above comments it sounds like I need to switch to the real thing. This is a hell I would not wish on anyone.
rob
I had the same thing happen to me! The Malinkrodt worked wonders! And then WHAMO! They stopped making it and I was on Teva! Ever since I’ve been on a different generic I feel like garbage! I want my old generic back so badly!
Kristi
DS – yes, I had a lot of digestive issues while in the adjustment phase. And, as well, I lost about 6lbs during that time. Once you level off (if you’re like me) you’ll stop losing, and your stomach will adjust.
I know that I feel better. I used to lie in bed for an hour or so because I simply couldn’t get up to face everything. Now, it’s not even a thought. I wake up, and I’m ready to go. I believe it’s mostly the medicine, because I’ve never had that improvement in all the time I’ve suffered from depression. I’ve even noticed a lot of the aches and pains I used to have are gone now.
I’ve changed my way of thinking about depression, due to my doctor. I no longer am ashamed of it, nor do I feel like I’m the odd man out. I OWN it. This is mental illness. I don’t hear voices, I’m not locked up in the looney bin, but this is mental illness, nonetheless. And once I started thinking in that manner, my whole approach changed. I look at my symptoms no differently than I would if I had diabetes or another disease.
And I also no longer look for a pill to solve everything. But I know Fluoxetine enables me to cope and deal with things, which is worlds apart from the life I knew before.
Kristi
ds
I guess I’m in the adjustment period with the prozac. The one side effect that I have gotten, which I did not get with any other ssri is weight loss. A good side for me as long as it is just in the adjustment phase.
I do however “think” I feel much better. Hard to tell when your looking for it, but I notice like previous poster, that I do get right out of bed and don’t have that sickened feeling in my gut.
anybody else w/ gut issues, like real lose of appetite?
KJL
I have been on the generic now for about a year. I lost my job because my boss told me I wasn’t able to focus, which is a side effect of depression and the drug. At any rate, I have felt tremendously better being on this medication – better than I have in my whole life. I’ve suffered from severe depression and anxiety since I was about 10. I’ve tried Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, Selexa, and several others.
This is the only one that helps me regulate my sleeping patterns, and have the oomph to get out of bed and not feel entirely hopeless. I do agree with Louise, however, that it’s virtually impossible for me to have an orgasm on this medication. I still find myself to be interested in sex, but I simply cannot climax. And during the adjustment period (about a month after starting the med) I could hardly hold my head up, I was so sleepy. All in all, given that I’ve been on so many different medications for depression, this is the best one. I actually feel normal, which is something I never thought I’d be.
Ann
Deanna, PLEASE tell me where you are finding Prozac for 150 a month! I just paid 391.00!!! And I have allergic reactions to Prozac generics–mouth and throat swell and I have problems breathing. Although that is a serious reaction, my insurance refuses to cover a penny of the brand name drug. I have nothing against generics, either. I just don’t want to die from them!! So, you can see, 150.00 sounds good to me! Thanks for any help you can give. Ann

I have taken Prozac off and on for several years. I’ve tried various medications and I have always preferred the Prozac because I can get the desired effect on the lowest dose. However, my pharmacy recently switched the generic Prozac they carried to a different one and seriously, I felt TERRIBLE!!
I called them and they ordered the Sandoz generic I used to take (the ones they switched to were 2 different shades of blue… BAD STUFF!). We’ll see what happens. I noticed that Sandoz Prozac is now in a powdered form inside the capsule as well. It used to be “beads”. Anyone else notice this?? If this doesn’t work, I guess I’ll fight the insurance company and see if I can get the brand name Prozac (right now, I’d have to pay $150 a month!!). I’m all about generics unless it’s messing with moods/the brain!

I had great results with the Barr generic of fluoxetine.. The Teva version sent me off the deep end and I have just learned Teva bought Barr so as of tomorrow I will be begin a generic made by Sandoze.. This could not have happened at a worse time as I am traveling outside the country next week.. .uggggggghhhhh.. Depression symptoms are slowly returning–stayed in bed all days yesterday and did not do any chores.. :-(

Same here. Teva is horrid for me. The one I use is from Sandoz; white with orange stripes. It’s worked wonders for me. Just try different generics, and call up the pharmacies around your area to see what type they offer.

I’m 17 and I’ve only been taking 10mg for a little over a week and I can’t orgasm at all. Didn’t have any problems a week ago. I also have a lowered sex drive. Whoever else has this problem shouldn’t feel alone.
I also have trouble sleeping. Somebody else mentioned the high suicide rate among teenagers taking fluoexetine, my Doctor mentioned this. I’ve had suicidal thoughts since 3rd grade, I’ve been seeing counselors since then, but I only just started taking medication.

I was taking Fluoxetine by Mallinckrodt for over a year and was feeling great. Then my script was refilled with Fluoxetine by Teva and my depression is back. I also have been having severe anxiety and uncontrolled thoughts.
I have seen my doctor and talked to the pharmacist. Mallinckrodt has been discontinued. So they have increased my dose. It has been 1 week and I still feel crazy. My doctor wants me to give it 2-4 weeks.
Has anyone else had this experience and does it get better? Should I just demand Name Brand?

I am taking Fluoxetine manufactured by Sandoz and haven’t had any adverse side effects. I hope this helps NK.

Is there a way to find out which generic company makes the closest equivalent to the original FLUOXETINE HYDROCHLORIDE? The generics I have been getting DO NOT WORK and I don’t have insurance so I’m hoping to find a generic that will work as well as the original did. I have found the FDA Orange Book but am unsure as to what to look for there. Thank you for any help you can give.

Generic SSRI’s do not work. Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, ect. I have not used them in my psychiatric practice for 4 years.

Sometimes when I take my Prozac I get incredible stomach upset. Have you ever tasted the powder inside the capsule? It feels like it’s burning a hole through your tongue. No wonder my stomach is upset.

I have been taking generic fluoxetine for 6 months now and have noticed a HUGE difference between generics. The fluoxetine made by Barr pharmaceuticals is awful! It tastes like rotton eggs and is about as effective as taking a placebo. My depression was back, I couldn’t think straight, and my anger problems were back too.
But the other generics I’ve taken of fluoxetine worked fine. I think the Barr version of fluoxetine is inferior to all fluoxtetines made, which is weird, because they were the first to manufacture generic Prozac. You think they would have gotten it right by now, or maybe they have just recently gotten careless with their manufacturing processes.

The generic form of Prozac (called fluoxetine hydrochloride) does NOT WORK NEARLY AS WELL AS THE ORIGINAL! And it tastes like melted plastic as soon as it hits your saliva…it’s awful. God forbid it starts to dissolve in your esophagus and back up into your throat. It is a terrible feeling and I had to race home at high speeds in my car to drink some milk to wash down the medicine. Almost did me in. Spend the extra money and get the real thing folks!

I have been on Prozac since 1999, now that there is a generic I have been taking that one. I have noticed a dramatic change in the way I feel…I have a heavy head and have a hard time concentrating and keeping my train of thought, I forget things and feel like I am functioning in a out of focus world. Unfortunately my insurance doesn’t cover the nongeneric brand. Is it possible that taking generics is different than the name brand?

I have taken Prozac for almost 10 years and just lately realized I do not care about anything anymore. I don’t answer my phone, do not care how I look or how much weight I gain….I think it all goes back to my taking Prozac for so long. I am afraid to stop taking it because I am afraid to care about things now.

I have been taking Prozac since 1990 and have had excellent results. My insurance company INSISTED I change to the generic of Prozac. After about 3-4 weeks my family started to notice a difference in my behavior and asked if I had stopped taking my medicine. I had noticed I was feeling “down” more often and it was a fight to bring myself back “up” and get everyday things accomplished. I also found I began to have serious thoughts of just “ending it all”. Something I hadn’t had for years.
I thought it was just a tough period I was going through for some reason. I never thought my body was not responding to the generic drug. I spoke with my doctor and she suggested I try the brand name Prozac for a few weeks to a month and see how I felt. After about 2 weeks I noticed a remarkable difference in my outlook and my family said they noticed that I was more like my “normal” self again.
Since this time, my insurance has made errors and my doctor’s office has concurred with their requests to change my medicine to the generic — 3 times. I now have my file marked in YELLOW AND ORANGE HIGHLIGHTS that there is to be NO SUBSTITUTIONS. MUST HAVE THE BRAND NAME. Although I have heard from many people that generics are exactly the same as the brand name drugs — in this case for me the generic was like taking nothing at all. I DO take generics whenever possible, but this is one medication I refuse to ever change again. Life with chronic depression is no fun, and life-threatening for me.

My dr prescirbed this med to me knowing about the migraine meds and elavil that I also take for chronic pain–when I picked up the rx the pharmacist told me not to take it cause taking with zomig-maxalt-etc.. can cause fatal heartbeats–make sure to tell your dr all meds and have the cross reference before they write the rx .

My 16 year old son took his life after taking fluoxetine 20mg (by TEva) for 43 days. A friend of his later told me that my son had confided in him & told him the medication (the only medication he was on) made him feel like a different person who didn’t care about anything anymore, not even living. We were never told of the Black Box Warning on SSRI’s (for people under the age of 24yrs) Not the Dr. nor the Pharmacy said a thing.. after contacting the F.D.A., I learned about the high suicide rates for teens on fluoxetine, more than all the other SSRI’s combined. My son had no previous suicide attempts or ideations.. Beware of this drug if you are within this age group!

I have been taking fluoxetine at 40mg/day for 4 months now, and I can’t believe the difference I have seen in myself and others have seen in me. It really has given me back my life, and I would strongly recommend this drug to anyone suffering from severe depression. I only experienced a few side effects. The worst one that I have experienced, sadly, is loss of orgasm. It’s frustrating and it sucks, but I have a wonderful husband who completely understands (and who also takes an anti-depressant), and the benefits of the drug still outweigh the side effects for me. However, I am also on a strong narcotic, and this also contributes to not being able to reach orgasm. So I am double whammied. Anyone else experience the same thing on Fluoxetine?
