man holding fast food container and clutching his chest because of heartburn

Most people assume that over-the-counter heartburn medicines are completely safe. Why else would the FDA allow them to be sold without a prescription? The trouble is that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like esomeprazole (Nexium 24HR), lansoprazole (Prevacid 24HR) and omeprazole (Prilosec OTC) can cause side effects. More to the point, such drugs can cause rebound hyperacidity. That makes them hard to stop. This reader wants to know how getting off omeprazole can be managed without going through “heartburn hell.”

Why Is Getting Off Omeprazole So Difficult?

Q. Do you have a diet for helping me survive omeprazole detox? One of your books alerted me to the dangers of the drug and I want to end my “addiction.” When I forgot to take the drug two days in a row, I experienced heartburn hell.

Earlier I tried to take myself off the drug, but I could only stand it for a week. Now I can’t skip one day without wanting to die.

A. Stopping powerful acid-suppressing drugs like omeprazole (Prilosec), esomeprazole (Nexium) or lansoprazole (Prevacid) can be tough. Many gastroenterologists might say that there is no reason to even consider stopping PPIs.

We have written about this controversy before. If you would like to read more about the pros and cons of these powerful acid suppressing drugs, here is a link.

PPIs are Safe! No, PPIs are Dangerous! What to Believe?
PPI confusion continues. One study suggests that PPIs are linked to serious adverse events. Then we are told PPIs are safe! What’s going on?

How Do We Know Getting Off Omeprazole Could Be Challenging?

In one study, even people who had never had heartburn before developed it when they abruptly stopped taking omeprazole  (Reimer C, et al. Gastroenterology, July, 2009). The fact that rebound heartburn symptoms can be even worse than the initial problem being treated explains your difficulty stopping the medicine.

In another study, some healthy volunteers took placebo pills while others took pantoprazole (Protonix) for a month. When they stopped their medicine, those who had been on placebo had very little change in their digestive symptoms, while those who had taken pantoprazole had significant digestive distress (American Journal of Gastroenterology, July, 2010).

A systematic review in the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology (May, 2013) noted:

“Gastric acid rebound hypersecretion following PPI therapy induces reflux-like symptoms post-treatment in asymptomatic volunteers, but the significance of this in patient populations is not clear.”

Another review of the medical literature was published in Therapie (May-June, 2018).

The conclusion:

“Daily PPI exposure for more than 4 weeks is likely to trigger a rebound of acid hypersecretion about 15 days after discontinuation, and lasting from a few days to several weeks depending on the duration of the exposure.”

What Are the OTC Instructions?

You just read that after four weeks on a PPI there could be rebound hyperacidity when the drug is stopped. That could be why the label on OTC Prilosec states:

“Take every day for 14 days, do not take more than 1 tablet a day. Do not use for more than 14 days unless directed by your doctor. Repeated 14-day courses (if needed): you may repeat a 14-day course every 4 months. Do not take for more than 14 days or more often than every 4 months unless directed by a doctor.”

We hope people read labels. We’re not always sure they do that when it comes to OTC heartburn medicine, though.

Company in Your Misery

You have plenty of company. Many visitors have reported trouble getting off omeprazole or other PPI drugs.

KH reported:

“A few months ago I went to my doctor complaining of occasional nausea and stomach pain a few hours after going to bed. After having a blood test done to ensure nothing serious was going on, she suggested that I take Prilosec OTC for a 28 day cycle to repair my stomach lining. It seemed to work great! Last week was my first week Prilosec free and even though I only took it for 28 days my body was a mess.

“I had nausea and stomach pain frequently, had bad headaches, felt weak and generally had no energy. I went back to the doctor at the end of the week and she suggested I go back on the Prilosec. I have been really hesitant to do so because she gave me no end date, only told me I should keep taking it as long as I needed. I found this site just in time! I will definitely be looking up natural remedies to cure my issues.”

Joe discussed this phenomenon with NPR reporter Richard Knox several years ago. Gradual reduction of the dose, if possible, is a good tactic.

Tips for Getting Off Omeprazole

Diet

The effort to stop the medication is worthwhile. Such proton pump inhibitor drugs (PPIs) have multiple frightening side effects, especially when used for a long time. Such medications may increase the risk of a heart attack by about 20% (PLoS One, June 10, 2015).

In addition to avoiding the foods that generally cause you heartburn, you might want to experiment with a low-carb diet. One small study found that when obese individuals followed a very low-carb diet, similar to Dr. Atkins’ recommendations, their reflux symptoms improved and they had less acid splashing up into the lower part of the esophagus (Digestive Diseases and Sciences, Aug. 2006).

Almonds

A number of people have reported that eating a small quantity of almonds after a meal can ward off symptoms of heartburn. Dr. Crystal wrote:

“I have a new patient with severe heartburn. (I find taking a person off their allergens usually clears it up permanently.)

“I saw her yesterday and she had a strong aggravation during our visit. I watched her stop it almost immediately with 2 almonds. She says it works every time.”

We should caution that some individuals report almonds make their symptoms worse, although many report that it helps as much as medication, if not more. Stella suggests sipping almond milk for reflux relief.

Vegetables

Some readers are enthusiastic about broccoli as a heartburn remedy. One fellow who calls himself Luke Skywalker reported that cutting out meat, flour and sugar and drinking a cup of freshly made vegetable juice twice a day was his ticket to alleviating heartburn symptoms. Another visitor wrote:

“During the first two weeks I ate 1/2 cup of broccoli a day (sometimes raw, sometimes cooked). I was able to stop taking Prilosec.

“Now I make sure to eat broccoli at least twice a week. I haven’t had any problems with reflux in more than a year.”

Probiotics

Other possible dietary remedies include fermented foods. One person wrote that drinking homemade sauerkraut juice eased symptoms quickly, perhaps due to the beneficial probiotic microorganisms in sauerkraut. Such bacteria have been shown to relieve digestive symptoms (Gut Microbes, Nov.-Dec., 2010).

Other remedies that people have tried and liked include eating half a banana, drinking bitters in club soda, swallowing a spoonful of yellow mustard and chewing sugarless gum. There are even studies demonstrating the value of chewing sugar-free gum to fight reflux symptoms (Journal of Dental Research, Nov., 2005; Journal of Dietary Supplements, June, 2015).

Herbal Remedies

One very helpful botanical medicine is deglycyrrhizinated licorice, DGL. Glycyrrhizin is one of the active compounds in licorice and gives licorice root its sweetness, but it can cause side effects such as high blood pressure. Removing the glycyrrhizin allows other ingredients in licorice to go to work calming heartburn symptoms. The usual recommendation is to take DGL twenty minutes before each meal.

Cayenne pepper extract is less common as a heartburn remedy, but a number of readers have testified that taking cayenne pills or adding Tabasco or other hot pepper concentrate to a beverage can prevent or reverse the discomfort of heartburn.

We recognize that many people cannot handle spicy food or condiments. If you are one of those, please do not try this approach!

Another botanical medicine that is often very helpful is ginger. Ginger has been used for centuries to ease digestive distress, especially nausea but also reflux symptoms. We suspect that ginger is responsible for the benefit so many people have noted from using “Persimmon Punch.”

The Amazing Persimmon Punch Story:

Q. I have been taking acid-suppressing drugs like omeprazole for more than 20 years.

After reading about the side effects of such drugs, I am ready to quit. I understand that this can be painful.

I read about persimmon punch on your website and would like to try it to avoid heartburn. How often should I take it?

A. People who take proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as esomeprazole (Nexium), lansoprazole (Prevacid) or omeprazole (Prilosec) may experience rebound hyperacidity if they stop their drug abruptly (Gastroenterology, July, 2009).  Symptoms of reflux can last for weeks.

One reader phased off omeprazole over seven months by reducing the dose gradually. According to people who have used persimmon punch in this effort, it helps to drink two ounces before each meal.

The first time we heard about persimmon punch, it was from a woman who had eaten in a Korean restaurant:

“Someone ordered Persimmon Punch, a concentrated cinnamon-ginger drink, for dessert. A few sips later, I felt fantastic. After a month of adding 3 tablespoons of the cinnamon-ginger drink to my tea morning and night, my heartburn was in control.”

You can find the more details on the Persimmon Punch recipe along with Tips from Dr. Tieraona Low Dog for getting off PPIs in our Guide to Digestive Disorders.

DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice)

Q. Stopping omeprazole (Prilosec) is really hard. When I tried, my heartburn came back worse than ever. I heard a report on public radio last year that when people stop this kind of medicine they experience rebound acidity that leads to bad heartburn.

An Internet search revealed a number of folks using deglycyrrhizinated licorice extract (DGL) to manage their reflux. When I asked at my local health food store, I learned that many people claim DGL has helped them get off omeprazole.

I went cold turkey off the omeprazole and chewed two 400 mg DGL tablets before each meal. If it was a particularly spicy meal (garlic is a culprit for me), I used an additional tablet after the meal. I followed this regimen for several months and then stopped altogether.

Today I seldom need the DGL, but when I do, I chew a single tablet for immediate relief. I continue to be amazed how effective this is.

A. Licorice that has not had glycyrrhizin removed could be dangerous. People who overdose on natural licorice may experience hypertension, headaches, hormonal imbalance and reduced libido.

DGL, on the other hand, appears much safer. It has been prescribed in Europe and South America to treat ulcers (Gut, June, 1985). Others tell us that DGL can help in gradual withdrawal from acid-suppressing drugs such as omeprazole.

Apple Cider Vinegar…Really!

Surprisingly, many people find that taking apple cider vinegar in a glass of water alleviates symptoms quickly.

And of course, dissolving a half teaspoon of baking soda in four ounces of water and drinking it is an old-fashioned but effective heartburn remedy. Don’t overdose, though and don’t combine the baking soda and vinegar; that would create a dramatically foaming concoction reminiscent of a grade-school volcano project.

Getting Off Omeprazole With Help from H2 Antagonists:

An article in Cureus (May 14, 2021) suggests that people suffer fewer symptoms when they taper off PPIs by adding drugs called H2 blockers. These are medications like cimetidine (Tagamet) and famotidine (Pepcid).

One Reader Describes a Successful Strategy for Getting Off Omeprazole with Pepcid:

Q. I was on PPIs, starting with omeprazole, for years. When I tried going off, I experienced the rebound effect.

Someone told me to try Pepcid to help with the rebound heartburn. I have been taking one Pepcid pill daily for years now, with no worry of dementia or other complications from PPIs.

A. Famotidine blocks stomach acid production through a different mechanism than proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole. Famotidine is a histamine (H2) blocker. Because histamine triggers stomach acid production, H2 antagonists like famotidine and cimetidine (Tagamet) ease heartburn symptoms and help heal ulcers.

Famotidine is less powerful and therefore less likely to cause some of the adverse effects of PPIs.

Where’s the FDA?

Sadly, there is no FDA or drug company-sanctioned solution for getting off omeprazole or any other PPI for that matter. It seems to us that neither the FDA nor the pharmaceutical manufacturers want to acknowledge that rebound hyperacidity could be a problem. It is far simpler to just say, do not take for more than 14 days.

If someone doesn’t bother to read the OTC label or ignores that warning, the company can blame the patient for “heartburn hell.” We don’t think that’s fair.

I stopped taking Omeprazole about a month ago but am going through rebound hell. I have excess acid some days, awful burping another day, lack of appetite. It’s really awful; any idea how long this might last?

I’m in the process of withdrawal from Omeprazole due to severe brain fog, fatigue, muscle spasms, tremor, palpitations etc. My Dr. referred me to neurology but I read that omeprazole can reduce the body’s ability to absorb magnesium, and all the symptoms I had were the same as magnesium deficiency. A week off omeprazole, and those symptoms almost completely disappeared (thankfully, as I was concerned it was MS). I’m convinced this is what was going on for me.
I’m now dealing with horrendous withdrawal, stomach issues, headaches and so much pain. Even though I’ve been following a diet to avoid all triggers of acid reflux, it’s still been horrendous. I’m hoping I will recover in time, especially with some good nutrition.
Since I realized that omeprazole could be the cause of my health issues, I’ve also read that PPIs damage the gut microbiome. Since this seems to be increasingly reported as linked to every aspect of our health, I’m concerned about how much these medications are used.
This medication is prescribed so easily, with no follow-up from doctors. My Dr. did not seem informed at all about PPIs and advised me that it was fine to just stop immediately. I’ve since learned I should have came off them gradually. I’d been taking a high dose for nearly 4 years.

I am one of those people who was on Omeprazole, and the symptoms recurred when it was discontinued. My physician added Famotodine twice daily when needed. I found I needed it twice a day, and, even then, might get some heartburn anyway.
Having read about the value of apple cider vinegar for digestive problems, I decided to try it. Lo and behold, I find almost immediate relief if I take a tsp. or so of vinegar with a tsp. of honey diluted with a bit of water.
I have not yet stopped the Famotodine, but that is what I will experiment with next.
I recommend it, as it has many health benefits.

Heartburn is very often caused by LOW stomach acid, not too much. I have heard that you should not drink a lot of fluids with your meal as it dilutes the stomach acid causing a problem for some. If you get heartburn regularly, you need to get your gut in better shape. Avoid hard to digest foods; don’t eat within 3 hours of bedtime; take probiotics daily and avoid foods that seem to be a trigger for heartburn. Trying to get off these drugs or many drugs, don’t stop abruptly, wean off of them while doing the things outlined above.

I have been taking an herbal supplement which contains DGL, Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm and Aloe Vera. It has helped my acid reflux tremendously. I’m trying to find out if any of these herbs have an estrogenic effect. I do know that licorice does, but what about DGL and the others I mentioned above? Thank you!

Broccoli is the vegetable with the most protein. The common thread here is protein. More acid, more protein. This makes a bunch of sense. I wonder if these high acid folks also have FODMAP sensitivity? Maybe some of us are just obligate carnivores!

I was placed on Nexium at a young age, 16 years old. It helped my heartburn symptoms but I knew no better at that time. After prescribing, I stayed on it for 6 years. There was no management of the drug. I just was told to continue because it helped.

Six-ish years later into the drug I experience massive brain fog (I would forget where stuff was when it was in my hand). I felt in a haze and not functioning. I started looking at research, and it turns out at that time research was showing early signs of Alzheimer’s for individuals on PPIs for extended periods. I discussed it with my provider, and she had no understanding.

My mom had been on Prevacid for 20 years and similarly showed problematic forgetfulness. I stopped the drug quickly over 2 weeks. I did have rebound hyperacidity. DGL managed my symptoms so well and eventually got me without heartburn. I rarely need it now.

Over the years, my nutrition improved immensely; learned about holistic care; became a gut health coach; repaired my gut lining; and have fully cured the heartburn. It’s insane how carelessly drugs are prescribed. Glad to be off of it!

    We use DGL-brand licorice tablets.

My wife has gone from daily to weekly Omeprazole doses by replacing it with DGL tablet once daily. She did this transition over the space of 2 months.
    All without any reflux problems.

I have also dropped Omeprazole to once every 4 days.
When I first started the regimen, I would start getting reflux on the third day so for awhile, so I took Omeprazole every third day. After several months I tried increasing time between doses and went easily to every 4 days without incident and am continuing lengthening Omeprazole dose intervals.

I drink kombucha and have a dose of probiotic on an empty stomach in the morning. I drank a lot of Kombucha for the first two weeks, like 6 a day. No coffee!!!!! I’ve been addicted to PPIs for 20 years!!!! This is the first time I am able to quit. I do carry Zantac for breakthrough heartburn, which is caused by drinking red wine or eating tomato sauce.

    Hi everyone,

A lot of good information on here and glad to see people doing well. I too have been currently diagnosed with GERD/LPR due to H pylori. Was on high dose of omeprazole for 2 weeks then stayed on 40mg daily for 1 month after. The symptoms I had before were an occasional SOB at random, palpitation, and stomach pain right side and sore throats and cough. Went to the ER twice thinking I was having a heart attack but then all went away.

After starting omperazole I started feeling super-anxious, so anxious I didn’t want to leave the house. I went online and read about this as a possible side effect and stopped immediatly after consulting with my PCP! All the anxiety went away in 3 days, but my PCP put me on 300mg zantac daily. I have been on this dose for 2 weeks now from stopping PPIs and not feeling much better. Am getting lots of reflux rebound heartburn which I never had, regurgitation and lump in thoat making it hard to eat.

I finally tried ACV today, and it stopped the regurgitation feeling that forms in my throat but I have felt slightly short of breath and nauseous. Able to eat right now but ACV didn’t make symptoms go away like people claim. Any suggestions on proper use of ACV while taking zantac? Has anyone else experienced shortness of breath or nausea with ACV? Not sure if I should stop using it or not.

I have also seen a ND and am currently taking Ga GI medicine 3x daily, aloe vera and banana smoothie, probiotics, DGL and slippery elm tea. Have been on a strict low-acid diet for 3 weeks already.

I had GERD, bloating, gas, cramping, etc., and my doctor prescribed Omeprazole. I was on it for about 4-5 years, can’t remember, but then one day I get a message in the online medical portal that said he was discontinuing my prescription. I freaked out… Did some research, and I’ve been managing symptoms with aloe vera gels and good digestive enzymes with every large or acid reflux-inducing meals, and I feel fine!! Before I started using those natural means, the burning/regurgitation would always come shortly after each meal. I’m blown away!

Oh…and if you do your research, many people don’t actually need PPIs…because they don’t actually have high acid, but LOW acid.

If you do the simple home test and find out you have low stomach acid, all you need to do is take Betaine HCL with Pepsin (HCL is hydrochloric acid and Pepsin is the digestive enzymes that help break down proteins). It helps your body produce more stomach acid on its own. So many people are being prescribed PPIs and suffering the side effects when it’s not necessary! So sad!!

The test for low stomach acid is easy. Every morning, for 3 days straight, before eating/drinking anything put 1/4 tsp of baking soda in 4-6 oz water and drink it down. Watch the clock. If you don’t belch before the 5 minute mark, you have low acid. If you belch within 2-3 minutes of drinking it, then you’re probably fine. If you belch a lot, then you have too much acid.

But don’t actually buy/start taking HCL while still on PPIs. They are counterproductive and could be dangerous. PPIs decrease stomach acid, and HCL increases…

The way to find out how much Betaine HCL with Pepsin to take is pretty simple too. You start out with one pill with a large protein meal. If you don’t feel any burning sensation in your stomach, then you can try 2 pills at the next meal, and so on. Keep increasing the amount of pills until you feel the burning sensation. It goes away within an hour, so no need to worry. If you feel the burning sensation, then decrease your dose by one pill, and stay on that amount for every large protein meal to manage acid production. Should you start to get the burning sensation down the road, then you can decrease again by one pill…and so on. If you have any questions, let me know.

The thing most doctors seem to have slept through in their anatomy/Physiology class is that normal stomach acid is about a 1 pH. Vinegar is about a 4 pH. Or….maybe they have a different agenda. More on that later.

As a nurse, on night shift, I have had the honor of waking people up at 4 am to give them their prilosec. (before I was on it myself, but I still knew what a bad drug it was to be on. ) Some of these rehab patients asked me what it was and what it was for, their doctors evidently didn’t believe in full disclosure even though it is a pt’s right. When I told them, they told me they didn’t have any problems with their stomach and refused to take it. I was good with that (pt right to refuse). Since then, night shift stressed me to the point of enlarging my duodenal ulcer (no not GERD), to the point of hospitalization and 5 pints of whole blood given which just brought my Hemoglobin up to 10. Telling me I could stop the prilosec after 2 weeks. Nope, vomiting returned. I have reduced the dose to 10 mg, but every time I try to reduce further, vomiting returns. I have tried all the natural suggestions mentioned here, and some, am continuing to take DGL licorice, carnosine, (rat studies show it is effective)krill oil, vitamin E, vitamin K2, all the 90 essential nutrients, cayenne, (before bed as it puts me to sleep but is supposed to be a mucous builder), GLA oil, now even though I am always negative for H pylori , and gluten intolerance, am trying the gluten free / low carb ( having stuck with whole grains and real butter-[butyric acid is healing]), glycine, cabbage, fermented cabbage, and more to rebuild my villi. If I do have an allergy to grains, it should heal in a week. Good luck to me. I handled my ulcer since 2009 with pepcid, not happy with that but certainly not as bad as PPI’s. Ppi’s DESTROY THE PROTON PUMPS OF ALL YOUR CELLS. This is not good. Also, it is a KNOWN destroyer of MITOCHONDRIA. Those are your powerhouses folks. Your energy molecule makers. I have been on Prilosec since getting out of the hospital in 2015. And I know it is killing me. Some estimates people on it for 5 years increase their death rates. I KNOW it has raised my blood sugar in spite of good dietary control, it has caused unreasonable weight gain, it has caused fatigue, i feel like I am going to have a heart attack in spite of being on all the heart support nutrients for over 30 years. No endurance, can’t go back to work to pay for life. Burden on hubby to pay for my nutrients. (I make him take nutrients too).

Back to the docs. If they are ignorant enough to not know PPI’s cause mitochondrial destruction, then that’s a problem. But maybe they do know, and maybe there is a reason they prescribe it to patients that have no stomach problems, could it be that they are deliberately causing more medical problems so they will have faithful patients? I have begun to think that.
Note this, we go no training on this in nursing school. I had to go looking for this info just like everybody here.

My mother, who is elderly, had a really bad case of acid reflux about 2 yrs ago (vomiting and feeling that it was burning all night). I had previously heard Brenda Watson (naturopathic dr) on PBS saying many people have heartburn due to LOW stomach acid, so I hesitated to give my mother the usual OTC acid-reducers. LINK to Brenda W website:
      http://brendawatson.com/gut-health/gerd-gastroesophageal-reflux-disease/
After some online research and consulting w/ good local health food store, I gave my mom an enzyme supplement, which really helped. I also had her try marshmallow root (which, when mixed w/liquid, becomes gelatinous and soothing); slippery elm; and DGL.

But the best treatment for her now-occasional heartburn is ALOE VERA juice (mixed w/ a little fruit juice for taste), which we buy by the gallon at Trader Joes.. Works very quickly for her — about 10-15 minutes and there’s no heartburn. My mother-in-law has also begun taking Aloe Vera (has diverticulitis, irritable bowel) and says it helps. I began to focus on the ills of Omeprazole this year, realizing my younger brother (w/ Down Syndrome + living in a Grp Home) has been on it for about 4-5 yrs (??), even though there was no definitive testing for GERD.

He’s also diagn w/dementia and now frighteningly thin and getting hospice care; they tell me it’s the dementia causing him not to absorb nutrients. But I wonder how much damage the Omep has done to him. I did get them to wean him off recently + he seems to have tolerated it very well. I am angry that Drs prescribe these kinds of drugs w/out any definitive test results — and seemingly w/out regard for the awful side effects – malabsorption of B vitamins, calcium (leading to osteopor), etc. Glad to have found this site!

Wow, I keep recommending the same thing! I found out I have low stomach acid, and have started the Betaine HCL with Pepsin tablets, and I’m taking Aloe Vera Gels by NOW Foods and digestive enzymes with 3each meal for acid reflux. It’s amazing (and angering!) how well natural stuff works so well, but the doctors continue throwing prescriptions at us!!

I hope your brother is doing okay. My mom just passed away, and she had dementia that progressed pretty fast. We all wonder if it was the barbiturate drug that her doctor had her on for over 30 years, and then the nursing home took her off of it, cold turkey… Ugh… I have a love/hate relationship with modern medicine.

I’m so grateful that my doctor decided to just cut me off completely from my Omeprazole (I was ticked off at first!).

        God bless,

After being on omeprazole for years, I learned about the worrisome side effects and decided to taper off my dose and try a non-pharmeceutical approach to controlling my GERD. In addition to completely avoiding trigger foods, I began taking a daily capsule of 1000 mg of d-Limonene, an orange peel extract. It has been a miracle for me. Usually one capsule in the morning controls my GERD all day. But if I happen to have reflux during the day, another capsule does the trick. The only side effect I’ve noticed is a very occasional reflux/burp that might taste of orange. It happens rarely and lasts for a second or two, and is not unpleasant. This may not work for everyone, but it’s sure worth a try. I make sure I always have a couple of backup bottles of d-Limonene, because I never want to be without it.

        Hello –

If you’re still looking for relief, this may help? I found relief within 2 weeks of my doc cutting off my Omeprazole prescription by just taking Aloe Vera Gels, and good digestive enzymes, with every meal. I was pretty shocked that it actually worked. I did my research, and they both help in gut balance. And my reflux was horrible, – every meal/every day – before that. You might want to give it a try. I used the NOW Foods Aloe Vera Gels off of Amazon. And the digestive enzymes I get from the company I sell for…but you can get any good digestive enzymes online.

Also, you might want to look into whether you have LOW stomach acid, which causes the same symptoms as HIGH stomach acid. It’s crazy how many people are being prescribed PPIs when they should be using HCL with Pepsin to increase acid production. I know it doesn’t seem to make sense…but lots of people have this problem, and doctors just throw a prescription at it and it causes more harm than good.

        God bless,
        Karen

Been on Prilosec since 2005 which is 13 years. For the last two years I have had low red blood cell levels, and now anemia. I should have gone for endoscopy sooner but kept putting it off and now I have been feeling very tired and irritable, worried I might end up needing a blood transfusion if I don’t get off Prilosec. Have an appointment with the GI doctor but have tried to wean myself off Prilosec and 3rd day I can’t stand it so cold turkey isn’t working. Took a prilosec today against my better judgement but couldn’t stand the side effects. Will try Zantax tomorrow since I am concerned about the anemia getting worse.

So many years ago I was put on Omeprazole 20mg for a couple of years, and then, after the second time I had an ulcer they increased it to 20mg 2X day. Until recently I did not have problems but now am having several different problems, all of which could trace back to side effects of Omeprazole. My mouth is so sore I can’t wear my dentures. I occasionally get very short of breath, have trouble maintaining my weight (lose very easily if I don’t increase calories). I would love to come off the drug, as I have been on it continuously for probably 15yrs. These comments have helped me.

I have been taking omeprazole since 2010. It was prescribed at 20 mg 2x per day to counteract side effects of chemotherapy. My last chemo was 9/2015 and I wanted off all drugs so l reduced my dose to 20 mg 1x per day. Reflux and heartburn came back worse than before. Have been at 40mg 1x per day since then. Recently realized something important. My diet has been contributing to the bulk of my problem. I noticed digestion trouble after eating nightshade and lectin foods. And large amounts made it worse. My naturopath said l have too little acid in my stomach. I think this is common in people with Type A+ blood. Since changing my diet, I have no nighttime reflux. And not eating at least 3 hours before bedtime has really helped. On 4/8 I started weaning off the drug. I began by adding 3 hours the first day, then 5 days, and so on. For example, my dose was taken at 9am the first day. I added 3 hours then the second day took the dose at 12pm. The third day, 5 hours was added. So instead of 12pm, I took the dose at 5pm. And so on. It is now 4/14 and my last dose was 4/11 at 10:30pm. Taking it on an empty stomach with no meal to follow was a lesson learned the hard way (heartburn in the night). I honestly can say this has been easier than expected. I have been drinking a lot of ginger tea, occasional antacids, adding benefiber 3x per day, and liquid vitamins. Even though there are still mild reactions, I am feeling much better and it’s only been 3-1/2 days. I am hopeful that l can continue to improve by watching what l eat and staying hydrated. I appreciate all the stories shared here as I realize l am not alone. I am very grateful for the suggestions given to help ease withdrawal symptoms. Blessings to you all on your journey to take control of your body. Peace

      Hello –

If you’re still looking for relief, this may help? I found relief within 2 weeks of my doc cutting off my Omeprazole prescription by just taking Aloe Vera Gels, and good digestive enzymes, with every meal. I was pretty shocked that it actually worked. I did my research, and they both help in gut balance and are very soothing to our digestive systems. My reflux before that was horrible – every meal/every day.

      God bless,

I’m coming off omeprazole after about 10 years. Luckily my heartburn is almost completely gone, but remaining side effect is that I’m nauseous a lot of the time and don’t know what to do about that? Anyone else have this symptom? Thanks for any help!

2 stalks of Celery or sip of pickle juice or eating a pickle this Works for me! If I feel it coming on I will snack and before I am done it is gone!! I have weaned myself off Omeprazole slowly after 5 or 6 years. Did not know you are only suppose to take it for up to 14 days they never told me that part and then only twice a year and not back to back. After having trouble digesting certain foods,… and now Osteoarthritis and few other issues I have made a change. For me it is not because of to much acid in the stomach it is Not Enough Acid in the stomach. Don’t get me wrong the pill worked,..but I realized was causing other issues over time. It blocks what little acid you already have causing less to break down foods properly so certain foods try an come back up. SOme times feels like you swallowed a sponge. This works for me is all I am saying.

I had taken Prilosec and then the Generic Omneprosole for over 15 years. Every time I tried to stop I got increased heartburn. Then last year I got extremely tired and out of breath if I climbed up a short stairway in the house. Went to my Dr. and told him symptoms -so he had me take several blood tests including one for iron level. He called me that evening at 9pm and told me to get a cab and get to local ER. Turns out that I had almost no iron in my body – they had to do a blood transfusion. The thinking is that taking PPIs longterm dries up your acids (good) in your intestine and makes it hard to absorb minerals/iron (bad).

They had me do all tests: colonoscopy, endoscopy, camera endoscopy, mammogram. No blood loss found. It was due to longterm use of PPIs not absorbing iron and other minerals for health. I almost died from Anemia. I got over-the-counter bottles of acid controller and /or acid reducer. These are not addictive, and I can take one 30 mins before breakfast and /or 30 minutes before dinner. When the heartburn is then under control I will sometimes take an acid controller at night if I lie down and feel a bit of heartburn.

I’ve been doing this now for 18 months, and I’m way better and haven’t had to take supplemental iron pills. Also never quit PPIs cold turkey – ease off over 2 or 3 months – every other day, every 3 days, and so on. There are several UK articles that want a black box put on PPIs. So have your Doc check your Iron level ASAP. That’s what makes red blood cells, and that’s what I didn’t have – made me out of breath climbing up stairs (not a problem going down). Good luck!

Very confusing subject! I have read articles such as this for many years since GERD has been a problem for me for many years. I decided to quit PPIs about four years ago, and I came off of them at a very slow pace. After a year off of PPIs my GERD came back very strong and with a lot of complications including ulcers and an inflamed esophagus. Had an endoscopy, and it confirmed I had done considerable damage by getting off of the PPIs. Had to go back on a high dose of 40mg twice a day, as my condition was determined to be serious. Gave me instant relief. After a few months I decided to cut back to 20mg twice a day. All OK so I went to 20mg once a day. I am now on 10mg every other day and doing quite well.

Last week I decided to see the gastro doctor and discuss the PPIs and see if I can cut back further. The doctor told me that my concerns about PPIs have not been proven to be true, as the studies were not conclusive. He said I was fortunate I could stay without symptoms of GERD with taking 10mg every other day. He stated some people can do this but suggested I stay at that level and do not go lower. He stated that my condition was extremely bad before when I quit the PPIs 100%. He felt that if I could control the GERD with 10mg every other day that I should stay at that level. Otherwise he felt that serious consequences would follow. After our long discussion I tend to agree with him. Do I wish I was off of the PPIs altogether? Absolutely. Did I have much choice following his advice? Not really, as I do not want the terrible effects of GERD to return and do damage that might lead to a major problem. Just wish “true facts” were more available so people could make informed choices. That is the frustrating part of these meds. What facts are actually true, and what facts are overhyped?

I have been taking Prilosec for years. I did stop at one point by going on a banana only diet for 7 days and had no heart burn. Then went back to normal foods and after a few months the heartburn came back and am now gradually back on Prilosec. I take one every 3 days. I would like to get off of it totally. I am going to start cutting the pill in half and taking half a pill every 3 days.

I need to caution you in splitting a pill in half. There is a coating on the pill that delays the release of the active ingredient. Cutting pill in half exposes ingredient immediately upon administering.

But the prilosec doesn’t just work on your stomach, it gets into your blood and it goes to every cell in your body, and destroys the proton pumps all over every tissue in your body, ALL Cells have proton pumps in the membrane to allow molecules in and out of the cell. Especially affected are the proton pumps in our organelles inside the cells, the mitochodria. These are the powerhouses of the cell, they produce ATP, the energy molecule. The longer a person is on PPI’s the more Mitochondria have been destroyed and the more symptoms a person is going to have. Mortality is pretty high in PPI users for a reason.

    Hi

Took omeprazole 20 mg daily dor years and was told I had damaged gut lining by use of alendronic acid for osteoporosis.
Over a period of about a year I very, very gradually reduced the dose to 10 mg daily. Not always easy but at the end of the year had no gut problems.

About 2 months ago started making my own milk Kefir and am now PPI free but struggling some days.

Will persevere but Kefir (home made) is definitely a very great help

I stopped taking Prilosec 5 weeks ago after 6 years. Substituting Pepcid is only partly successful. Every day I experience extreme pain, much stomach gas, and occasional vomiting under the new regime. Convinced that Prilosec itself creates a syndrome of pain only Prilosec can relieve. Angry that this drug is OTC to cause addiction. Should not be OTC, and anyone trying to withdraw from Prilosec addiction should have costs paid.

I read all the comments here while looking for a solution for my husband’s digestive disorders. It was diagnosed as mild gastritis and eosophagitis but it made him hate his life.
I believe that the Omeprazole he was put on definitely made his symptoms worse. He got anemia and diabetic neuropathy as an addition but reading through all of your comments made me come up with a protocol that has kept him stable, eating and going about his normal life for the last 2 weeks
DGL ultra, doctors best pepzin gi Zinc L carnosine, Digestive enzymes, Slippery elm and Marshmallow root capsules also B12 methycoblamin, active B complex with folate and this is the way he takes them
B12 – monday, wednesday and friday
B complex – tuesday, thursday and saturday
Dgl ultra – every morning 45 mins before food
Digestive enzyme – with afternoon meal
Pepzin GI L Carnosine – 45 mins before evening meal
1 capsule each of slippery elm and marshmallow when he wakes to go pee at night
and he now sleeps well and has begun to add weight and his whole outlook on life is totally reversed and optimistic.
And the plus is on this protocol he can eat most decent meals including a little milk

      Hello,

Have you heard of Dr. Gundry’s Total Restore supplements? It looks like a lot of those supplements you’re having your husband take are the same ones in Dr. G’s supplements. I started taking them for leaky gut and am seeing an improvement in my gut. Also, taking 1-2 aloe vera gels (NOW Foods brand from Amazon) with each meal has been amazing for my acid reflux. I don’t get AR now! I hope your husband continues to heal. :)

I am hoping to quit this drug myself- I always correct people who call it “medicine”. It’s nothing that truly heals you so that doesn’t apply- it’s a drug. I’ve been on it for about 4 years. I was hospitalized in 2013 for 2 weeks with Pancreatitis which is God Awful. I recall having an episode of heartburn & the Doctor gave me something which worked, but I didn’t take Nexium that whole time. I really wish I would’ve stayed away once I left the hospital because I think I would have been Ok. Now I have a Vit D Deficiency (taking about 15K IU’s a day now) and I cannot eat like I did before. I really hope I can ween off & I’m cutting pills down from 20mg to about 10mg. I may try alternating a day if I can get down to 5mg, or maybe try @ this lower dose which I’ve done for about 3 weeks.

I was immediately cut off from my prescription when my doctor just up and stopped it. I freaked…but started doing my research. I highly recommend getting some Aloe Vera Gels, and taking 1-2 with every meal, along with some good digestive enzymes. I get NO acid reflux anymore, and it’s only been 2 weeks since he discontinued my Omeprazole. It’s hard to believe that something works!

Many people with GERD also have leaky gut, and I have a lot of the symptoms, so I’m trying to heal my gut in the process. Also, many people have LOW stomach acid, not high stomach acid…and are prescribed PPIs when they should be taking hydrochloric acid supplements instead! I discovered that I also was mis-diagnosed, and given that prescription. :(

Anyway, I highly suggest the aloe vera gels!! I got them off of Amazon.

I had been on Prilosec for 10 years for heartburn when I decided to get off it for fear of side effects. The withdrawal heartburn was horrible but gradually subsided with Zantac which is an H2 blocker, not a PPi. However, since then off and on I have abdominal cramps and anal leakage especially worse after drinking red wine and caffeine. I’ve relied on greater frequency of Zantac and am now considering a Pro biotic.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just wondering if you would react to an alkaline drink? I like lemon juice and water with honey. I take two Zantac morning and night and have been off Prilosec for 2 weeks now without pain. This is the longest I have ever gone without getting back on Prilosec because of the heartburn return. Probiotics help a lot.

I highly suggest taking 1-2 Aloe Vera Gels with each meal (but make sure it is a good brand, and doesn’t contain the latex part of the plant). It’s amaaaaaaaaazing for acid reflux. I couldn’t believe it until I tried it after my doctor just decided to up and discontinue my Omeprazole prescription. I get the NOW Foods brand. Also, you can try taking 2 Tbs of high quality Apple Cider Vinegar in 12 oz of water with each meal. It helps your body have a good acid balance…among many other positive health benefits. Also, taking a good digestive enzyme with each meal helps me tremendously. :) I hope this helps you, or someone! :)

I have been on and off Omeprazole for a few years. I don`t have much acidity but at night when lying down I can feel heart thumping in pit of stomach, horrible sensation, can’t sleep. My doctor said vaguely that I had a hiatal hernia as shown on an ultra sound around the pit of my stomach. I have been taking them for a year, and the thumping disappeared.

Like everyone else, I am afraid of these pills and their side effects. I`ve been taking Tumeric paste with added pepper for a year. It’s done wonders for insomnia and depression. It is also highly recommended for digestive disorders. I came off Omeprazole this morning, feeling a little nauseous and eating very little, heart missing beats occasionally. It seems to me that the heart and the digestive tract very intertwined. Just wondering if anybody else has these symptoms. Have burning feet, and do not know if it`s from pills or hereditary. I hope the burning lessens after a while. Thank you for this excellent page.

I have been on Omeprazole 20 mg for about 5 years now. I was put on an initial 30 day regimen of the 40 mg capsules when I had bad gastritis (I think from too much coffee, dark chocolate, and citrus-flavored stuff, which are my favorite things!!). I was doing great, except when I was done with the initial treatment, I had very bad rebound heartburn. It came and went but eventually got to the point where almost everything was giving me crazy heartburn. I tried OTC Zantac and Pepcid, which didn’t seem to help much, and eventually started taking OTC omeprazole again, and have ever since. A few months later, I had insomnia and intense depression and paranoia for three days. I went to the doctor, everything was fine except my Vit. D was very low. Taking 1000-2000 IU of Vit. D daily helped with the psychological issues, but almost five years later, I get dizziness that ranges from mild to moments of vertigo several times a week. I get constipated easily and have trouble passing gas (I think from undigested food stuck in my intestines??). Many times, I’ve had strange and worrying chest pain and intense chest pressure–I’m otherwise a healthy 29-year-old–and have gone to the ER twice now thinking I was having a heart attack, which I wasn’t. Working in a pharmacy for 10 years, and having other people in my family with similar PPI problems, I’ve heard many of the same symptoms from others who take PPIs long-term.

I went to my GI doctor last year, determined to find a way to wean myself off of omeprazole after hearing all of the scary side effects from new studies on the news, and after trying many times to wean myself off but experiencing debilitating rebound heartburn. He basically said there was no reason for me to stop taking it and I would probably be on it the rest of my life. I told him I did not have GERD or chronic heartburn until I started taking omeprazole, as well as my recent problem of waking up in the middle of the night choking on my stomach acid, and that the only problem I had before starting it was a bout of gastritis, which has since healed. I also told him about the side effects I had heard about, and he said the studies were mainly done on older people who already had health problems. I’ve taken it for the past year, but my dizziness and other weird feelings have continued, and after reading a lot of the comments here, I’ve decided to wean myself off for good, no turning back!

Drinking chamomile tea with a piece of ginger root every night before bad has essentially cured my nighttime acid reflux, and I think it’s helped heal my burned esophagus and has made things more kosher overall in my stomach. I’ve decided to alternate with the 20 mg one day, and omeprazole 10 mg in the AM and pepcid 20 mg in PM the other day, gradually doing more omeprazole 10 mg/pepcid days than omeprazole 20 mg days, until I’m totally weaned off omeprazole altogether and am just taking pepcid as needed once my stomach is producing normal amounts of acid. I’ll update here when I’ve found out how that works.

And thanks for all the great advice and info I’ve found on this page and in the comments!

I have been on Prilosec for 3 years (40 mg/day). Prior to that Nexium (40 mg) for probably 10 years, and before that 20 mg, and before that Ranitidine. I have GERD but no hiatal hernia….switched to decaf coffee and avoid red sauce which is awful heartburn for me.

Tried to get off years ago and didn’t know about the rebound effect but makes sense as I thought I was having a heart attack. Stress test and EKG were normal and doc said I must need the Nexium so I continued. Need to get off but have been on it for at least 20+ years.

MY bigger fear is my 15 year old daughter…she has peptic ulcers thought to be from the overproduction of acid. She takes 40 mg of Prilosec, twice a day! We attempted to reduce to once a day but ulcers came back. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Would love to get her off of it because can’t imagine her taking it for the rest of her life. She still does not feel well but better than she feels without it..she has low iron and D3 and fights me to take supplements as she can’t swallow pills. Help please.

I have been on Prilosec for at least 20 years. Although i’ve tried many remedies none have worked to eliminate the problem completely. I had an MRI done on my Kidneys and found a tumor.
Apparently that is not unusual as many people have tumors on their Kidneys but just don’t know it without an MRI.

It comes down to 2 questions. Do you want to die of Esophageal Cancer or Kidney failure?

Stress and diet all add to the problem of Acid Reflux. Hope all of the natural remedies work for you all. They have not helped me .
I’m off Prilosec at the moment but the heart burn is so bad i throw up bile at times.
Going to stay off and see if the side effects you all have mentioned goes away. Prilosec is great product! However there is risk with it no question. But so is life in general.

My experience has been similar to yours. I’ve been on some form of proton inhibitor since the 80’s and have attempted many times to quit, never made it beyond 48 hours. I’m on a Ketogenic Diet, high fat and very low carb, and I read that eating cabbage, sauerkraut and asparagus were very healthy probiotics. After several days of eating this way I realized one morning that I hadn’t taken my Omeprazole that morning but I felt ok so I didn’t take it.

It was 3 days before I started feeling any discomfort. Then Thanksgiving came and it got more uncomfortable because I wasn’t eating my normal Keto diet. But that was the longest I had gone off medication and wasn’t going to give it up. My friend suggested that I add a pinch of baking soda to my water each time I refill my Yeti, and that has cured me. It was such a simple fix. It has also helped my chronic constipation. It’s been over two weeks now. I think I’ve finally beat it!!

I have been taking Omeprazole 40mg for 2 weeks. I stopped taking this medicine because I think it worsens the acid in stomach. I am very much confused about whether I have a gallstone but everything was normal on my upper abdomen ultrasound. Since then, I stopped taking the medicine. I’m very much aware on my diet. More on fish, chicken and vegetables. Everyday I’ll make sure I have a banana and apple in my diet. But, sometimes I felt my stomach uncomfortable. I don’t know if this is one of the side effect of stopping the medicine prescribed by the doctor for 1 month but I took only for 2 weeks.

Any insight about this. Thank You.

I also quit 10 days ago after 20 years and have been reading many posts. Physically I try to cut the acid reflux with mothers ACV and water, GLC, chewing chia seeds, sugar-free gum, graham crackers, runners amino acid drink, and bland foods.
Am in this to quit, hope it gets incrementally easier though.
I also have an elevated temperature, dull headache and sometimes behind my ears seems to be itchy /numb. Taking probiotics, calcium and magnesium, b12 and a multivitamin.

I am amazed at what this drug has done to my body. I have nearly every symptom and side effect. I have been taking it on and off since Feb. 2017 for an assumed ulcer. A week at a time seemed to be the best way earlier in the year as I don’t recall having any major issues after going off from one week. My ulcer pain was reoccurring so I would take it again, for another week, etc. In July I was advised to stay on it through September.

I had severe abdominal pain on my right side and my kidneys have been kicking me this whole time. I have had kidney stones and thought that it was unrelated. During the abdominal pain sessions after food I would be extremely bloated and uncomfortable, sometimes confused, not able to focus, constipated, and generally feeling like my guts were going to implode. Two weeks ago I had severe chest pain and went to the ER, my heart was fine, with no incident (how strange). Then I found out via a back lumbar MRI that I have a large mass on my liver. The first thing I did was go off of Prilosec, but I probably should have stepped down a bit. I now know that this drug causes liver, kidney and gastric tumors, polyps, disease, and dysfunction. I am one week off of the drug today and am remedying symptoms with apple cider vinegar. I hope the damage to my kidneys and liver is repairable.

I was diagnosed with GERD in 2001. I am a recovering drug addict with almost 19 years clean. My Dr. thinks my GERD may have been brought on by my years of meth abuse (11 year run). I was prescribed Aciphex in the early days but after about two years and still having heartburn frequently my Dr started me on 20mg omeprozole. I have been on Omeprazole for over 14 years. Generally, if I miss a dose, I’ll feel it later. Recently, she tried switching me over to ranitidine but it was a direct switch and after 3 days it was unbearable and per her instruction, went back on Omeprazole. I have known for years that the long term study was inconclusive, but in the past couple of years, I’ve been seeing more and more articles come out on the dangers. I emailed my Dr a week ago about how to get off this drug but haven’t received a response. I don’t want to continue taking this drug. I’m overweight, and I am concerned about the heart damage. I know losing weight will help dramatically. I decided to lower my dosage from 20mg a day to 20mg every other day and the off days I’m taking a 150mg ranitidine. My goal is to do this for a month and then change it up to every 3 or 4 days on Omeprazole. I am so glad I found this article and especially the comments of what works for some. I know now I need to reduce carbs, probably cut tomatoes out and lower sugar intake. As far as caffeine, I usually drink only 1 or two cups of regular coffee a day, but I also have my home cold brewed coffee, about 24 oz a day, but, cold brewed is around 70% less acidic. I’m just haired out about Omeprozole and I don’t want to take it for the rest of my life because of the dangers. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know of ill effects of suddenly switching from Omeprazole 40 mg to Zantac? I have been on O for nearly 3 years and after reading the horror stories here I want to stop it. I tried stopping a while back but after 4 days w/out it I couldn’t stand the pain. Thanks for any help.

I have been off Omrorazple for 9 weeks. Reduced dose for one week then stopped completely. I was really worried about rebound effect.

I am fine I started a acid watchers diet and it worked a treat. I’ve lost 1 stone 5 lbs in weight. Back on normal healthy diet but only eat chicken turkey or fish with loads of veg for dinner. Porridge with almond milk for breakfast. Lunch is fresh raw veg and nuts. I also eat lots of fruit.

Feeling really great loads of energy. Wish I’d done it sooner.

I have been on PPI for 20+ years. I was diagnosed at 19 and was treated once with a ‘one-time’ combination of drugs that alleviated all my symptoms for about 3 years. Today I take one 40-mg capsule each night before bed. Until I found this site I wondered if I was the only one having some of the symptoms. The neuropathy in my feet/legs was being attributed to possible heart issues by a couple of docs. They did an ECG and found nothing. So many of the symptoms here are things I’ve had for a few years. Stopping just puts me into absolute misery by day 2, so the apple cider vinegar is going to be something for me to try. Thank you all for your input and sharing your experiences. I’m not interested in cutting years off my life. Diet modification, exercise and naturopathic treatment are in my future.

After being on omeprazole for 15 years, it was discovered I now have osteoporosis in my spine (70 years old). My doc has replaced O with Rx strength Zantac (ranitidine).

I am an absolute mess. Headaches, reflux, and now, irritable bowels. I am drinking aloe juice before each meal: nothing. I’m drinking a bowel (organic) regulator: a wee bit better, but don’t want to leave the house. I’m barely eating at all…the payment is too dear.

My next step is to asked to be referred to an gastro doctor and get to the bottom of this. Okay, this probably doesn’t help a soul, but there sure is a difference between PPI’s and whatever the Other acid-blockers are…

I was on Omeprazole for 2 years for gastric ulcers and last summer I fell off the bottom step of my back porch, about a foot and a half fall and braced myself with my hands and broke the ulna and radius in my wrist. After trying to look for alternatives to get off Omeprazole I read that some of the side effects are spine, hip and wrist fractures and the calcium in your body is depleted.

I guess that is right! I am now not on it. I went cold turkey. Had heart burn but took care of it will ginger soda and tea. I have increased my D3 and calcium in hope I can turn around the damage this caused my body.

I have been on Prilosec for 15 years, 20 mg daily ( sometimes 2 tab’s ) . I am convinced the culprit that caused the reflux to begin was wine and coffee. The Prilosec allowed all of that pain free. Only of late have I discovered the dangers. I have non- diabetic bilateral neuropathy starting in both feet and over the years slowly progressing upward toward knee’s.

The PPI drugs affect the absorption of Vit. B, magnesium and other nutrients that contribute to many issues. I dropped the Prilosec from 20 mg to 10 mg daily. I did not want to cut the pill because it is “ timed-release” and should not be cut in half because it causes immediate release of contents.

My primary care Dr. prescribed a 10 mg. Omaprozole pill . I took 20 mg, every other day and one 10 mg the other day. Now I’m down to only 10 mg daily in the a m and doing well. Any symptoms and I drink water ( to dilute ) ., baking soda or Pepcid. I am now taking the 10 mg every other morning and will try stopping altogether in a few weeks.

I’ll have the DGL handy as well as Pepcid. BTW: The wine stopped some time ago and the coffee is one or two a day. I suspect my system will always be sensitive to reflux but I will never, ever treat it with this drug. It should have a black box warning.

Ohhh – I also have been on Omeprazole/Prilosec/Nexium for over 20 years for GERD/Acid reflux. I have suffered through the coughing, non-diabetic bilateral neuropathy in both feet, headaches and chest pain, confusion and many times was told it most likely due to a reaction to some “new prescription.” So – after all these years on the med – I stopped cold turkey 6 days ago and have suffered through a massive headache – unbalanced feeling – severe dizziness and just totally off keel!

When I stopped the Omeprazole – I started drinking 8 oz of water with a tsp of baking soda first thing in the morning … During the first couple days I did need to drink this a couple more times during the day – and couple times took Tums. This diminished the acid reflux symptoms greatly.

Almost 1 week now and the withdrawal symptoms are slowly subsiding – but the headache is not totally gone and I am still off keel! I went to a local health food store and in talking with one of the Vitamin/Supplement Counselors I learned of the DGL Licorice Root Extract and have decided to start with this supplement tomorrow morning. Sad part of this … It’s recommended I stay away from dairy and red meat! ?

I am thankful I found this forum to be able to be a part of it to learn from others and to share with others! Thank you all!

I have questions about the neuropathy issues in your feet and legs. Do you feel the use of omeprazole contributed to this? Has it gotten any better since you have decreased your dose?

    Update on withdrawal from Omeprazole
I have been off it for 9 days, so far doing really well. No adverse affects.
I changed my diet to low acid diet (only eating foods with Ph level of 5 or more) 2 weeks before I stopped taking Omeprazole.
I stopped drinking coffee which I used to drink very strong at least 6 cups a day each with 2 heaped teaspoons coffee.
That was hard I had to wean myself off of it over a week period to avoid withdrawal headache.
I have lost half a stone in weight sticking to low a low ph value diet, very healthy eating, having mainly fish, loads of low ph value vegetables and fruit and nuts.
I have stopped having to clear my throat, the soreness I had in my mouth has improved hugely.
I feel really well at the moment and no hint of rebound reflux
I now eat last meal at least 3 hours before bed, and only drink water.
Bit of a sacrifice for me to eat like this, but I feel it’s so worth it to feel this good.
Will update in a few weeks

Do any people out there have a foot or feet problem, like tingling, or numbness in space between big toe and second toe, or a stiffness that feels like perhaps arthritis that they think may be caused by omeprazole usage? The stiffness much worse in morning. Has anyone ceased using this drug and found a cessation of these or similar symptoms? I do believe that the PPIs are bad drugs and over prescribed, but in some circumstances that are useful. But they can cause many problems, and the one I described may be one. Have been on omeprazole for 10 years and it does eliminate my GERD.

I’ve been on Omeprazole for a year 20 mg once a day. They were given to me by ENT Dr because of swollen vocal cord. GP continued to give them to me.
Shocked at the effects it has had on health. I have had a severe sore throat for 4 months. 3 lots of heavy duty antibiotics. I have a sore tongue, raised rough taste buds and my tongue feels uncomfortable in my mouth. I also have teeth marks on side of tongue, suspect cause B Vit deficiency. I also have a lump on old tonsil site which GP said is tonsil regrowth.

I am convinced the cause is Omeprazole so I have started a weaning off program. I’m in week 2. Will update progress.

Sorry that you are feeling this way and I hope you are already better. You need to ask you doctor to do a test for H Pylori infection and get treated with appropriate antibiotics (triple therapy) if positive.

I have been on PPIs for about 20 years. My belief is that taking them makes it so you can not absorb other medications and fully absorb the nutritional value of food. I stopped by watching what I eat, noting the foods that cause reflux. Using the apple cider vinegar home remedy seems to have worked for me. Also after stopping I have developed a swallowing issue where I have to force my first few bites of food down by drinking something. Sleeping on my left side seems to keep the acid at bay during the night.

I was never really concerned about taking Omeprazole, until my boyfriend spoke to our doctor about her prescribing this medication to him for his heartburn and stomach problems. She told him he can only use it for a short time to see if it helps and then slowly reduce to none.

He asked her how come I am still on them and have been for many years and her reply was I am all ready addicted to them and that it would probably be too late to take me off of them. This statement is what made me more interested in my research now.

Really happy to tell everyone I have no reflux since drinking tea made with a tablespoon of freshly cut ginger, adding a little honey to sweeten. Make it in the mornings with enough water for 3 mugs in a saucepan. Needs simmering for 3 to 5 minutes. Simply have to warm the rest up which I drink about 5:00pm and finally before going to bed.

I have been on PPIs for 11 years. First on 20 mg Aciphex and then on 30mg Dexilant. Every time I tried to quit Aciphex, I would get such awful chest pain that I was concerned that it was a heart attack. I waited, not wanting to go the the hospital, and a calcium carbonate relieved it somewhat.

I went back on Aciphex. Now, after 3 years on Dexilant, I have decided to cut back. Since 30mg Dexilant is similar to two 15mg Prevacid capsules, I decided to try taking just a 15mg Prevacid. This is day 9 of my attempt, and it has been difficult. I am using calcium carbonate, when needed. I have had to change my healthy diet to accommodate this change, but it is almost tolerable so far, and much better than cold turkey.

I have been taking 40 mg of Omeprazole for approx 10 years for acid reflux. I recently received a flyer from Walmart Pharmacy about the dangers when I renewed my prescription; Last week after having severe Diarrhea every morning (5 days) within one to two hours after taking the pills, I stopped taking the pills cold turkey. I have had no reactions that I have noticed and generally feel about the same as before I stopped, (without the Diarrhea). My breakfast remains as before, dish of instant oatmeal with cranberry & flaxseed and I load it up with raisins and at least two teaspoons of ground cinnamon. The rest of my meals are a wide variety from Chile burgers to pasta, fish etc. Snacks are P-nut butter and crackers. – 80 yrs.old.

I have read many of your great suggestions and trials here. I have taken a little bit of advice from most of you and I wish to share my experience.

I have been on 20 mg. Prilosec OTC for 6 months as ordered from my gastroenterologist. This was after the scope with no adverse biopsy. My problem began initially in taking Citalopram ordered by a neurologist. I didn’t need an anti-depressant. My neurological issues were caused by depletion of Vitamin D. I only realized this later after some serious stomach irritation (tachycardia and other symptoms) had developed from my body’s reaction to Citalopram.

My hair was falling out in handfuls and my circulation was very bad. Had it not been for the need of correcting a hammertoe no one would have diagnosed me with Raynaud’s disease. I didn’t know what that was. I had never had it until I took the Prilosec. One of the causes sited in articles on Raynaud’s disease was listed as “medication”. I wondered what medication am I taking that might cause this?

I decided to find out if this might be caused by Prilosec and then I read all of the side effects by this poison. I “googled” how to get off of this medication and I was shocked at the stories of people who wanted to get this drug out of their system. I can’t believe that the FDA allows this drug to be on pharmacy shelves without a prescription. And worse there are doctors who tell us that we need it.

I began to cut my pills down from 20 mg. to 15 mg. with a pill cutter. I alternated for a week while taking marshmallow root capsules, slipper elm, and papaya enzymes (all from the health food store). The next week I took only 15 mg. Then I cut the pills again with a pill cutter and the next week alternated 15 mg. and 10 mg. The following week I took 10 mg. for 7 days. The week after I alternated 10 mg. and 5 mg. and so on. I always took the health food supplements and I never needed any antacid drugs of any kind. Sometimes I had mild burning but I was never in real pain and I always slept well.

I did watch my diet. Initially I looked up alkaline foods and only ate those. As the weeks went by I added other foods that I had given up. I am nearly normal in my diet. I am almost at the end of quitting these poisonous pills. My hair hasn’t been falling out as much. And I plan to continue the health food supplements then gradually reduce them to let my stomach live naturally. I will always continue to take a probiotic and vitamin D3.

I hope that I could have been of help to at least one person who wants to rid themselves of Prilosec forever. Best to all of you.

I took Zantac for many years — 2 per day. Then after some digestion issues I switched to 2 Pril. per day. That fixed the discomfort but then I read about negative side effects of PPIs so reduced to 1 and 1 regimen– 1 Prilosec morning, and 1 Zantac eve.
That worked out fine, I decided to go the next step and go off Prilosec. The result was bloating, diarrea. So back on the 1 PPI in the morning. After reading about some studies, it appears that the withdrawal effects can last from 12 wks to 3 months, and then should subside.
So it seems to me I should try the gradual weening. Maybe 1 PPI every other day for a few weeks, plus low acid diet, and just try to cope with the withdrawal. I would continue to take Zantac during that time.

I have been taking Omeprazole magnesium (or variations of it) for over 15 years. After seeing the late night commercials about the potential for permanent damage to your body, I decided it was time to quit. I was taking 20 mg/day.

I started by skipping a dose every other day for three weeks. After the 3 weeks, I happened to be on vacation and decided to quit cold turkey. Yes, my stomach was upset and I had acid reflux and heartburn. However, I had started taking a good quality probiotic before quitting the Omeprazole, and noticed how much it calmed my gut. (You need to take the pill with 8 oz. of water 20 minutes before you eat.) When I take the probiotic once a day, my symptoms of reflux were reduced dramatically.

I am convinced that that was my original problem (lacking the proper digestive enzymes, rather than over production of acid). It’s been a bit shaky, and after having been off them totally for about 10 days, I had to take one Omeprazole capsule to stop the flu like symptoms of withdrawal that have gradually appeared. But I’m not going to let that stop me.

When I broke down and took the Omeprazole after being off it for 10 days, within 30 minutes my withdrawal symptoms completely disappeared and my gut was calmer than it had been in days. Just goes to show you how addictive Omeprazole can be. I also found apples to be helpful in calming my gut, but that just may be me. And I want to thank everyone on this forum for sharing their experiences.

I take DGL! It helps with Gastritis, Heartburn, Ulcers and more. I would get stomach ache, burning and running to the bathroom after I ate any food at all. I started taking DGL Chewables and now I do not have a problem. It worked right away.

I stopped taking for about a week because I was busy and forgot and was eating bad and right back to my old pain and being sick. So If you start taking it you shouldn’t stop…ever.. So go to the health food store or get online. Not expensive. Worth it. Get off of those script drugs and go to natural.

My problem with Omeprazole (which I have been on for 15 years – 20mg once a day but now down to 5mg) is the debilitating constipation and bloating, nausea and discomfort. I have also gained 10 stones in weight in the 15 years. I was always 8 stones in weight ALL my adult life until starting this drug. I stopped completely last year for two weeks cold turkey and although it didn’t work that time I lost 10 pounds in weight, my constipation and bloating disappeared. When I went back on I developed an bad cough which I still have and it starts early afternoon. I now know Omeprazole has done more harm than good and I have been slowly reducing the dose. I am on 5mg per day which I will stay on for a further four weeks then reduce to 5mg ever second day, third day etc until I am completely off. I will never take this drug again.

I was taking Omeprazole twice daily to control my GORD (GERD) for a few years, increasing the total daily dose as time progressed. After discussion with my doctor, we decided I should cut gluten from my diet. Since implementing this, all my symptoms have fully resolved & I have not required any further Omeprazole. I’m not saying this would be the cure for everyone but it does demonstrate the impact diet can have on the body.

They found I had Barrettes Esophagus. I had several Halo Ablations done, and the BE is gone. The GI doctor told me to stay on the Omeprazole to avoid getting BE again, but I really want to get off of it. I am having EXTREME bloating. It seems as though my food is not digesting. I think the lack of stomach acid is causing more trouble. At this point I don’t know what is the greater risk.

Here it’s almost 24 hours later and I still had the WORST heartburn. I started gagging & coughing and I felt like I was going to vomit. I read through this page and decided to try 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water. I drank a few gulps of it and immediately felt relief. I am not sure how long this will last, but for now I am better.

I wish I had read all this before I stopped taking Omeprazole 3 weeks ago. I had been prescribed this years ago and I only took it for a few months because of stories of long term side effects. Then I was put back on it about a year or so ago because an upper GI showed stomach lining wear. Again I started reading about more long term side effects and decided since I had already had changed what I was eating to have a more alkaline body environment. I was going to stop taking it. I didn’t realize you had to “ween” off of it. Now I understand why I was getting nauseous so much the first 2 weeks. I had some episodes of reflux (not heartburn) just pressure in the esophagus when eating salsa and drinks with lime. (Margaritas) Now I know not to mix the two. Everything seems to be ok now. Hopefully proper food pairing will keep everything in check. I already take a supplement with cayenne, apple cider vinegar extract & cinnamon and some other things to help keep an alkaline environment. Anything I can do holistically to avoid long term medicine usage, I will do.

Started taking Omeprazole about 7 years ago due to high gastrin levels, before I had an operation to remove a non-cancerous tumor in my stomach. Suffer from low B12 and have injections every 12 weeks. Heard that taking Omeprazole can cause problems with low B12 so stopped cold turkey over 3 weeks ago but getting some nausea and some cramps. I’m fine up until lunch time (no problems after cereal for breakfast) so maybe it’s down to what i’m eating. Never had a problem with indigestion or heartburn before taking these. Going to keep a food diary over next couple of weeks. Hope it settles down as I really don’t want to go back on them. Should I persevere ?

I have been on prilosec daily for over 2 years and tried to go off it cold turkey several months ago. I didn’t know about the rebound effect then and so I promptly got back on the prilosec when my reflux was intolerable. Then last month I read several people’s comments on this site that mentioned DGL licorice tablets. WOW! I weaned off the prilosec for two weeks, and have since taken the DGL tablets, starting with 6 per day, and now only as needed. I’d absolutely tell anyone to give it a try! They are low-cost, low-risk, and work like a charm. Thanks again to People’s Pharmacy for a wonderful remedy.

A very important step, in getting off PPIs, is SLOWLY, GRADUALLY, tapering down the dosage, even if this means taking a week or 2 to finally get off the PPIs!

GRADUAL and SLOW weaning down of the PPI dosage is KEY to preventing the “rebound” extra stomach acid production that forces so many to get right back onto PPI’s!

My “tips” (suggestions) for using non-PPI ways to fight reflux, are similar to your suggestions.

I sincerely hope that you will ADD the point, that GRADUAL, SLOW, TAPERING/WEANING down the PPIs, over several days to weeks, is VERY IMPORTANT, for preventing the “rebound” hyperacidity that you wrote about!

I agree that DGL (De-Glycyrrhizinated Licorice) and Apple Cider Vinegar (if one doesn’t have a bleeding ulcer!) can be very helpful for fighting reflux! I use these myself!

An additional herb that helps, if one is not allergic to elm trees, are SLIPPERY ELM throat lozenges, or one can mix some slippery elm bark powder with water, and drink it between meals.

By the way, more adverse effects of PPIs include osteoporosis (by interfering with digestion & absorption of vital bone building minerals (Calcium & Magnesium, etc.), and also NERVE DAMAGE, caused by the following cascade of events:

In order for the stomach to be “allowed” to make Intrinsic Factor molecules, the stomach needs to have ACID in it. Many people who are not even taking PPI’s, may have decreased stomach acid production (HCL/Hydrochloric Acid), due to aging.

But, in order for dietary Vitamin B-12 to be absorbed into the bloodstream of the small intestine, the Vitamin B-12 molecules that arrive in the stomach, must be escorted (carried) by INTRINSIC FACTOR molecules over to the last part of the small intestine (the “ileum”).

Then, if one were NOT on PPI’s, the “Intrinsic Factor” molecules would then release (let go of) their “precious cargo”–the Vitamin B-12 molecules, and somehow would facilitate (make happen) the entering of the Vit. B-12 molecules, into the villi (tiny, microscopic finger-like projections that line the interior of the small intestine).

The Vitamin B-12 molecules would then enter the capillaries (one capillary per villus), and this is how Vitamin B-12 enters the bloodstream.

Then, the Vitamin B-12 molecules would travel in the bloodstream to the heart (in veins), and the heart would pump out blood into arteries, thereby carrying the Vitamin B-12 all over, including to the liver, where Vitamin B-12 is stored!

Animals too, store their Vitamin B-12 in their livers, so organic liver (to avoid pesticides) is a good food source of Vitamin B-12.

When one is on PPI’s, no INTRINSIC FACTOR molecules can be made by one’s stomach, so the result is that dietary Vitamin B-12 does NOT get absorbed into the bloodstream, and the following then occurs:

If a person’s peripheral nerve or nerves of 1 kind or another have been damaged by actual trauma, or surgical damage, or from an infection, etc., the injured nerve(s) cry out to the liver, to please send some Vitamin B-12 over to the injured nerve(s), to help the nerve(s) repair their injured myelin sheaths (cholesterol/fatty coatings).

Since being on PPI’s results in a person’s liver using up its storage areas of Vitamin B-12, the person eventually gets a VITAMIN B-12 “DEFICIENCY” (No Vitamin B-12 left in the storage areas of the liver!).

Then, injured nerves cannot heal their damaged myelin coatings, and the result is PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY (Nerve Damage!).

While one is slowly withdrawing off the PPI’s, a way to supply injured nerves with some Vitamin B-12, is to take the Methyl Cobal Amin form of Vitamin B-12, sub-lingually (under the tongue), to bypass the digestive problem of not having the stomach making any INTRINSIC FACTOR molecules that would have “facilitated” small intestinal absorption of Vitamin B-12 molecules, into the bloodstream.

From what I’ve read, the “Methyl” form of sub-lingual Vitamin B-12, which is called Methyl Cobal Amin, works better than the cheaper “Cyano” form of Vitamin B-12, called Cyano Cobal Amin.

If one looks at forums of folks having various peripheral neuropathies, a pattern emerges–and that is, that many of those folks have been taking PPIs for extended periods of time.

    Sincerely, Carol (retired RN/nurse)

I had a terrible time with withdrawal symptoms and ended up going back on the med each time. Finally, I caught a stomach virus and reasoned that after days of throwing up, my body would be natural resetting its acid production as I recovered. So, I stopped cold turkey, with zero rebound symptoms. I will never take this kind of medication again.

I have been taking Omeprazole 20mg for more than 20 years. Having recently heard about side effects I decided I would come off it permanently.
Is it Ok to take ‘ranitidine’ instead. I have not taken Omeprazole for 3 days but today I have ‘Heartburn’. Can I take an alternative which is not a “ppi”
Such as ranitidine. I really don’t want to take “Omeprazole” any more.

I have checked this out with my Doc. after being on Omeprazole for 18yrs, apperently Ranitidine is a diffent type of drug, and (so far) safe to take. But, you should not just stop taking Omeprazole, you have wean off gradually, otherwise the stomach goes into overdrive, so, something like 1 every other day and then just stretch it out over a few weeks, and other kinds of heartburn relief, then go on to Ranitidine, well, that’s what I’m just started to do myself. Good luck.

A lot of this is anecdotal evidence. Some people are suggesting that taking something spicy will alleviate heartburn symptoms when in fact heartburn symptoms would be exacerbated by spicy food. Suggesting that mustard, sauerkraut juice, tabasco, cayenne all worked? I cannot think of anything I would avoid more while having acid reflux.

Agree. MOST of these suggestions are anecdotal. But on the other hand, doctors don’t seem to be alarmed at the chance of PPI dependency and they probably will not be alarmed until some real findings come out to support the negative side effects.

I was on omeprozole for years and I have a hiatal hernia. I have decided to stop taking the medication because I don’t trust it. I’ve decided to change my diet. No red meat, eggs or dairy. Plenty of greens and fruits etc. I get light bouts of reflux still…but I’m so used to them now, that they go on their own. No more omeprozole

Problem is all drugs have side effects and are different within each person. Just stopping medication is and can be very serious for the individual. Some have no choice but to take them, take Omeprazole, if you have acid reflux that returns it directly to the lungs because of a faulty valve then you take the drug or have a not so successful operation. So much scaremongering on the net these days. You just have to make sure your decision is safe to action or you could be making your illness far worse. Long term medication is now being highlighted, when you take it for 20yrs it does make you wonder why at times other issues start? What is the answer to it? ( take another pill).

I had treatment last year for Pylori Helcobacter (the treatment for the bug that is responsible for must gastric problems) and have been told to stay on the PPIs esemorapraszole twice a week until April. Just wondered if by coming off would cause gastric again. The bug has gone so I will try it and see!!!

I am trying to reduce my dose of lansoprazole from 30mg to 15mg at the moment. I have been on high dose ppi’s for a long time, maybe 15 years for a diagnosed hiatus hernia. It is so difficult, really bloated, bad pain and acid indigestion. I also have a conclave chest which makes me feel like my stomach is in my throat a lot of the time. I am taking a liquid antacid which does help a little bit. Just starting my second week on the lower dose, I’m hoping I can stick to it and gradually wean myself off them eventually. I am amazed at how many others are stuck on these meds…felt like I was the only one! Thank you for making me feel not so alone ? Will update with how I get on

I was on omeprazole for years.. Great drug for me as it stopped my acid reflux problem. I could guarantee what time of day I would get the unbearable pain at and like clockwork it appeared..
Then one day at 9 am the pain started and I took a tablet and started my journey… but the pain didn’t go away… I continued on and did what I had to do and found myself at the last drop off and 40 miles away from home… I was in severe pain and discomfort with a very worried passer by asking me if I was ok!!

I decided to go to hospital bit as I got close the pain eased slightly so I decided to make a dash for home. I hadn’t eaten for around 6 hours but strangely felt full and not hungry. I managed to get home and immediately took another tablet, got in the bath and went to bed hoping the pain would ease.. At this point my wife asked if I wanted my steak and I refused so she became worried.. At around 11pm the bearable pain intensified to a point I couldn’t take and I decided to go to hospital.. As I sneaked out of the house so not to wake my wife although I had left a note saying where I was going, I noticed she had blocked me in and there is no way I’m leaving her the keys to the audi.. so I was in a dilemma.

I decided to forget about the hospital and resorted to drinking a full large bottle of gaviscon thinking (well at least I’ll sleep) and crept upstairs, put a cushion under my stomach and laid flat..I went out like a light!!

To my suprise I awoke with no pain and went down stairs and had my usual breakfast of coffee and a cigarette.. 9am came and no pain..2pm came and no pain..9 years later and drug free I still have no pain…My doctors are puzzled

Reading how ppi’s can lower magnesium levels in the body too. Wondering if that has any relationship to my lower levels of D. I heard that magnesium. And D are co related?

I’ve been taking Prilosec 40mg for almost 7 years now. When I was diagnosed with esophagus erosion, the doctor started me out On dexilent which is not called kapidex, then later was switched to Prilosec 40mg because of insurance reasons.

Two weeks ago I discussed with my doctor about coming off the PPI’s since I have adjusted my lifestyle and eating habits to cope with the acid reflux. The doctor switched me to 20mg Prilosec per day, which is about half of what I was taking. Only after a week of taking the 20mg my heartburn symptoms started to flare up until I felt nauseated. After three days of this pain I called my doctor to explain what was going on, we decided that I need to get back on the 40mg Prilosec per day. Two days after everything seems to be back to normal. I have read several bad thing about the PPI’s which is why I wanted to try to ween myself away from them, however I have seem to learn that I cannot live without them. This is very scary to me, and I worry about the risk involved from taking PPI’s for so long.
I am only 32 years only, and I fear of my acid reflux turning into esophagus. Thank you for listening to my story. Have a great day. Jason

I’m 27 years old and have been on Omeprazole for about 8-10 years now. First started on 20mg, then after few years went to 40mg, and then was taking (2) 40mg a day on top of tums or whatever else. I got a scope done about 4-5 years ago: I have a hiatal hernia and esophagitis.

I recently had someone ask me why in the world I have been on this for so long that you’re not supposed to be. So I started to research and realize I’ve caused so much damage to my body. I am in shock about how bad this medicine is for you. Anyway, I’m on my 2nd day without it. I’ve read and read and read not knowing where to start with my diet and other supplements to take.

So I cut out all soda and coffee. I’m only drinking water, that’s it, and trying to watch what I eat. Today is my 2nd day off, and I feel terrible: bad chest pain, fire coming up my throat, feel and look so bloated. I’ve taken one Ranatidine and papaya and tums. I NEED HELP FROM YOU GUYS. I’m so upset and don’t know which direction to go and what to take or eat. Please help!! :(

Been having reflux issues since my 20’s.
At the time I was told that a hiatial hernia was the culprit.
Of course, things were good or worse depending on what I ate.
Along come Prilosec and my worries are over!
Instead of a 20 mg tab, I discovered that cut in half (10 mg) worked as well as an entire tab.
But you know, after a couple of years and weird physical changes, I decided to get away from Prilosec.
Boy… was I in for a shock! All the typical reports of magnified burn and discomfort are not exaggerated.
Then my employment contract ran out and I was unemployed. This meant staying at home and doing projects and chores, etc.
Within 5 months I had lost 20 lbs. and was OFF the Prilosec!
No dietary changes at all except less junk food from the vending and lunch trucks.
Still do a mild bi-carbonate of soda to take the edge off, but that is all!
So I don’t know about anybody else but it appears getting out of commute traffic of 2 hours a day along with escape from the natural cadence of dealing with road idiots, made a difference on this end.
    End of Story

I was on Omeprazole 20 mgs for one year and insisted on getting off of it. The doctor agreed to drop me down to 10 mgs but it was less than two weeks before I stopped entirely. From day one I did not experience the rebound effect, to my amazement. It has been two months and I have not had any problems. Prayer certainly was the major factor no symptoms arose since I was dealing with gerd, hiatal hernia, and severe gastritis inflammation. Secondly, I began drinking an 8 oz bottle of S. Pellegrino Sparkling Natural Mineral Water daily (though not as often lately). It has a lot of alkalinity to it and if I feel the least touch of an acidic stomach, I drink a few sips to combat it and it works fast. I don’t tend to feel anything acidic during the day but there likely is a small amount at times. The only thing I notice is a little of that frothy white mucus first thing in the morning but then much of the day it is clear. What I am dealing with since being off of Omeprazole, however, is too much saliva forming in my mouth . Reading about that on the web does indicate gerd as one of the causes of it. Hopefully this saliva problem will dissipate in time! Best wishes!

I took Omeprazole for 8 1/2 years. It started when I was having daily heartburn and I went to my physician, Originally I was advised to take a two week course. It helped greatly, but once the two weeks was over, the heartburn came back with a vengence. I went back to my physician who said, if the meds work, keep taking them. For the next two years I consulted my doctor and each visit was told to keep taking it. In year three I switched doctors and was told to go see a specialist. I was scoped and the specialist found nothing. His advice was to wean myself off as quickly as possible. That began my journey of trying to quit this medcine. Originally I tried cold turkey, and that was a night mare. I had many sleepless nights and discomfort. I tried every home remedy available, from black liquorice extract to venegar, etc. etc. but no luck. I tried taking a pill every other day, but no good. After many failed attempts I stopped trying, but i didn’t stop reading and educating myself. The one thing that I learned was that I’d never really asked why I had gotten so much heartburn in the first place. I have since then concluded that I did 3 very specific thngs that contributed to the original problem. 1. I took NSAIDs in high doses daily 2. I consumed massive amounts of artificial sweetner and 3. Ihad recently quit smoking. Ironically, in my attempt to quit smoking I switched to diet sodas which caused headeaches and upset stomach, so I took Alka seltzer and advil by the bucket full. That combination coupled with the fact that I was now producing less saliva daily ( yes smokers produces significantly more of this ) caused wretched heartburn. Ok so now I know what to avoid, so how do I get off of the meds? Here is what I did. I bought a pill cutter. and I cut 1/4 off of the pill and kept the cut of portion. I alternated a whole pill and a 3/4 pill for 6 weeks. Then i just took 3/4 pill a day for 6 weeks. then stepped down to alternating 1/2 and 3/4, so forth and so on. I am now 3 years without a pill an doing great. I can even eat spicy foods and acidic things

I am trying very hard to get off Omeprazole!! Been on 20mg for about 11 months. Never did have GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). The doctor was “convinced” that I did since I’ve got chronic coughing and a hiatal hernia. Stopped Omep for 3 days. Had HORRIBLE rebound reflux!! Food came up to the top of my throat, burning like I couldn’t believe!! Solid nausea. Hours and hours like this. All night. Back on the Omep as soon as I knew I wouldn’t throw up.

My titrate plan for getting off: Open capsule, and take out 9 of the 18 pellets. That was Day 1, so 10mg instead of 20. Next day, take 12 pellets, so 2/3 the dose. Next day 9 pellets. Today, Day 4, I took 11 pellets instead of the 12. I want OFF this drug!!! I will continue down. Probably 9,11, 9, 11, then 8, 10, 8, 10, etc. I will update here!! I hope I can help others, AND I hope I have a positive outcome myself!!

It was only a week ago I had that horrible rebound effect. Which was when I said “Never Again” to this hideous, insidious drug!!

Other disturbing symptoms: my feet have been numb and tingling for 2 months. Saw doc about it. Tested then for diabetes; don’t have it. Doc had no answer. Hands are now starting to tingle and go numb. It’s the Omep, I’m near positive. Also getting some edema in hands.

Lifestyle changes I MUST make while titrating down: NO eating in the evening, period! Lose weight, like 30 lbs! Start exercising!!! Get Slippery Elm powder to take, plus other herbs to coat, soothe esophagus, etc. Research them.

I want to get off Omeprazole. I’ve been taking omeprazole for 7 months 40mg/day, after internal bleeding, black blood. Exam, camera down the throat, showed inflammation of the stomach. Lab tests came back negative regarding a sample from stomach. I’ve changed my diet dramatically, lost over 25 pounds, only occasionally have stomach pain, not much pain, just uncomfortable. Still, afraid to stop the medication, don’t wish to have the bleeding again, emergency room, colonoscopy or the test down the throat, but want to get off Omeprazole.
I have always been a worrier, am starting meditation, will not take pills for this.

I’m hooked on omeprazole as well and and in the process of weaning myself off. But in regards to your bloating, I suggest asking your doctor, or doing research on digestive enzymes, not to be confused with probiotics. I had my gallbladder removed and experience lots of abdominal bloating both before and after removal. My surgeon suggested digestive enzymes. When I take one the bloating dissipates within minutes. Sometimes I want also add a Gas X till as well. But research a lot.

I have been helped immensey by your suggestions, comments, etc. I was fortunate to find a grocer that carried candied fruit, and bought papaya. I forgot to mention that I have completely lost my appetite. I haven’t been eating vegetables, and ate a lot of very delicate cheese. Now I have a good supply of vegetables, and yesterdays main meal consisted a mixture of carrots, green beans , and corn. I also drink tea, and lots of water. Yesterday evening I took a chance and drank a nutritional drink that I drank when I couldn’t eat. I have had NO problems. My stomach is calm so far and I seem to feel calmer, also. I don’t have as much back pain, and painful arthritis. I shopped yesterday, and for the first time, woke up without feeling my body wracked with pain. Today, I’m skipping the Prilosec and will let you know what happens. Hang in there, folks. You’re in my prayers.

Hello! I am 44 years old and I have been on Prilosec for close to 10 years. I recently started drinking lemon and honey in warm water every morning to help lose weight. The only problem was that I was introducing more acid into my system which gave me more heartburn, but knowing that the lemon and honey was natural and the Prilosec wasn’t meant that I had a decision to make. So I chose to get off of the Prilosec, and like many of you I went through a week of hell.

If you choose to get off of Prilosec PLEASE don’t get discouraged because after your week of hell you will notice things have changed with your body. For instance the first thing I noticed was that it seemed that my stomach went from feeling like a bowling ball to feeling like a soft ball and I lost six pounds within a week. Secondly there were foods that I would eat while on Prilosec such as Italian beef that would give me heartburn anyway, and now I can eat it without any problems. Third when we would go out to eat I would always feel like I was going to throw up, and only eat about half of my food, and just sit there thinking about whether I need to go to the bathroom to throw up or not. This feeling does not allow you to have a pleasurable evening.

I could go on all day about how good I feel since giving up Prilosec, but I’m sure it is different for everyone. This is my advice on how to succeed in getting off of Prilosec. Start with a half of a fresh squeezed lemon in a warm glass of water with 2 or 3 tbsp. of honey every morning. Just a reminder you will feel a little burn after you drink it but it will go away shortly. Stay away from soda, candy, and processed foods, as they seem to cause heartburn. Secondly a healthy diet is important, for example when eating at home only cook with the leanest beef that you can buy, and include fruit and vegetables. Why you ask? Think about grandma and grandpa, did they have heartburn? no, Why? because they didn’t have processed foods back then. It was meat, potatoes, vegetables, and fruit which all contain nutrients to stabilize your body’s ph level. The human body can only use the nutrients that you put in it, most if the nutrients have been cooked or boiled out of processed foods, therefore try to use as much fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat as you can.

You might not totally get rid of heartburn or acid reflux this way so I have one more suggestion. Do you remember the old saying “an apple a day will keep the doctor away” ? Well in the afternoon or evening or after a meal if you start to feel like you are getting heartburn try eating an apple. Doing this somehow stabilizes the acid in your stomach and the burn will go away.
    Thanks

I changed from Prilosec to Nexium, on occasion, and I swear, man, that is like a bullet, a heavy military drug I might say as well, but I’m scared from my comfortable health condition and I think to go back to that Prilosec!

Thank you all for the ideas and suggestions. I am starting today my way to get off Omeprazole.
I am 49 years old and takings omeprazole for 3 years for ulcers treatment after a endoscopy. So four years later and heeled ulcers, but now I have I am trying to get off Ompz, because last year I started to have rip pain, a lot of back pain, leg cramps, and after a regular physical exam it was found a fat liver, and I don’t drink, I don’t eat junk foods, I exercise at least twice a week and was feeling little unusual tired. I had so I started to read about long term Ompz use and thanks I found this site.
Hope I have success to get off Ompz. Thanks again.☺

As a chronic alcoholic, and a smoker for years, I went to the Drs. and needed something for my cough. He ordered prilosec and did not even bother to recommend how long I should take it for. Of course I quit drinking and smoking, so half the battle with GERD was over, however my cough continued. I found out later that using ppi’s is not safe in the long term and their are natural remedies for GERD.

I take DGL before meals, aloe and peppermint caps on an empty stomach, apple cider vinegar and probiotics in my diet. Since I’ve had a flair up, I will start taking Aloe juice, and want to try that mastic gum. Hopefully I can get this GI problem under control and get on with my life!! Lisa

I am still on my very long journey to get off of Omeprazole. It is very hard despite taking DGL and other remedies. I do find that three plain cream crackers help when the acid is very bad.

For the person who said, “Just eat a better diet”, guess what – I do! I don’t eat junk food, I rarely eat meat or fatty foods, and I don’t drink soda or wine. Nothing helps when it is really bad, except the cream crackers!

If this continues, it has now been about 8 months, I may go back to the doctors and try and take the Omeprazole every 3 days with DGL in the middle. I can’t go on like this, even porridge makes me ill. I am at the end of my tether with it.

If I go back I will insist on a check of my Magnesium levels first, and then every 12 months.

GOT OFF PRILOSEC! I wanted to post my success story here. Especially after reading so many of these other posts and getting every little bit of info I could from them. Yes I had success, yes it took 8 weeks, yes it required multiple supplements, and yes there were some bad, nauseous moments.

In a nutshell, here’s my history. For many years I had GERD or acid reflux. Took Prilosec daily for over two years but still had reflux and grit. Also took Tums as need, slept on my left side, had a wedge to elevate my head. I also became very constipated at times. It seemed like stomach motility had stopped, and food would just sit in my belly for hours. This makes sense since stopping stomach acid production would stop digestion.

I had once, in the past, stopped Prilosec cold-turkey, and on the second day had the most unbelievable acid attack in the middle of the night. With acid welling into my mouth, through my nostrils. Uncontrollable coughing up lots of phlegm and acid into the toilet while sobbing and choking. Went on for over an hour until I scarfed down massive numbers of Tums and took the Prilosec. I think you have to experience this to know what I’m talking about.

This happens because the acid producing cells in the stomach keep multiplying in response to Prilosec stopping acid production. So you end up with massive numbers of suppressed acid producing cells. When you finally stop Prilosec (or other acid reducing medication) ALL the cells start producing more acid than could ever be naturally produced.

Here’s the quick version of what I did. Believe me, I followed other people’s advice on this, am grateful to them, and now want to help others with my experience.

    1) I bought chewable DGL supplements, papaya enzyme tablets, and Tums antacid. Plus a week long, daily pill dispenser container to keep me on track with the varying doses of Prilosec. 2 smaller pill containers to carry the DGL and enzymes in my purse while eating out. A pill splitter is also helpful.

The DGL, Papaya and Tums “arsenal” was someone else’s idea. Thanks so much. Have this READY before starting as you will need it.

    2) I split the Prilosec tablets in half. I took the 1/2 pill every morning, first thing, for 2 weeks.

    3) I then filled my pill dispenser for every other day. I took the 1/2 dose every other day.

    4) I then split the Prilosec into 1/4 dose. This was trickier, but I used the pill splitter first, then a paring knife. I took the 1/4 dose for 4 weeks.

NOTE: After 2 weeks, I had tried to go to every other day with the 1/4 pill, but I couldn’t do it. Too much acid and nausea. Also had another health issue during this period (Lyme diagnosis and antibiotics) so just went easy on myself.

    5) After 4 weeks at 1/4 dose, stopped taking all Prilosec.

    6) Off Prilosec and continuing with the DGL and Papaya, and regime of eating smaller and less protein-based meals.

For every meal I took the chewable DGL before eating and Papaya Enzymes after eating. I did not skip meals or snacks – thanks to someone else’s advice. If you get overly hungry the acid starts filling and you get nauseous. I ate small meals, high in veggies, fruits and carbs. Do not overeat protein and fatty fried foods. Do not stuff yourself. Absolutely, do not eat before going to bed or late in the evening. Avoid red meat and eat small amounts of poultry and fish instead. Heavy protein requires acid to digest, and at this point your digestion and acid production are very messed up.

Drink plenty of water and other liquids like tea or soup – but not so much as to overfill your belly. Whenever acid or grit starts welling up, sip some water. Carry a water bottle with you, and drink as needed.

Take Tums as needed whenever too much acid is being produced.

I had tried taking ACV (apple cider vinegar) remedy during this time, and realized this didn’t make sense. Just get off the Prilosec, not complicate this process. Pamper yourself, let this one goal be the main focus, and not muddy the waters with other cures.

There was nausea at many points of this cure. Every time I reduced a dose, there would be a few episodes of nausea and dizziness. Usually around and 2nd and 3rd day. Just take more DGL and papaya, plus Tums. Slow down. Some of the dizziness happened after trimming hedges or scrubbing the tub or other housework. All the vigorous arm movements and stretching my arms seemed to get my belly jumbled up. Then I would get quite dizzy and nauseous. This also happened when I tried to reduce the 1/4 dose to every other day (see NOTE under #4.)

There were a few times I simply had to use a Fleet suppository for constipation. With all the small meals, dietary changes, nausea, digestion not working – I needed relief. Again, be forgiving of yourself, and make getting off Prilosec your main focus. Do what you have to do to stick with the plan of reducing, then stopping Prilosec.

If it gets really bad, on that day, just take another Prilosec DOSE. So another 1/2 pill or 1/4 pill. And forgive yourself, and stick to plan the next day. For me, there was a lot of shuffling of split pills in my week long container. Do what you have to do, and don’t let one day’s backsliding get you off track.

I stayed on the 1/4 dose for 2 extra weeks because I needed to slow down at that point. Do what you need to do to ultimately get off. If that means extending a reduction period – do what works for you. I had planned for 6 weeks, it took 8. That’s not failure.

(BTW – I had also started taking a high-quality vitamin B and high-quality magnesium supplement during the 2nd month. Look up what high-quality B is and high-quality usable magnesium is. Not cheap, but I felt some of my other issues could benefit from these. Not sure if this helped or hindered the Prilosec withdrawal. But one of the side effects of long term Prilosec dependency is B and magnesium deficiencies. ?.)

    Good luck everyone.

I went on a low carb but also take niacin nonflush 500 mg once a day and niacin regular 250 mg once a day at night. This is known to control acid reflux. I had the same problem trying to ween off omeprazole, but after niacin, I took omep 3 days a week for 3 weeks and then just stopped and had no problem at all. I had taken omep for 2 to 3 years, don’t recall. But yeh, it is really hard to get off of if you go cold turkey.

So stay away from processed carbs and then after 6 months try the niacin thing. that’s what worked for me. of course always consult with your doctor before deciding to come off of any medication. :)

I was on prilosec for 8 yrs and started getting hip fracture. My doc said keep taking them anyway but I just stopped in one day and had no side effects and my hip felt better. I told him and he was upset and said to get back on them. I noticed samples, posters, etc all over his walls as he is a slave to the pharmaceutical companies and so I told him NO. He wrote me a letter telling me to find another gastro doc as I wasn’t a good patient that didn’t follow his advice (orders!)

It has been 10 months now since I had prilosec and I feel fine with just some tums once in awhile for my hiatial hernia and gastritis.

I was on Omeprezole for three years – because of acid reflux. No problems- but heard it was very bad for you to stay on them because your bones start to thin and you leach calcium. I spoke to my doctor and he said no one should be on those things long term I tried to come off with little success – the acid reflux was 100 times worse.

Then someone told me about Mastic gum that you buy in capsule form I took this along with pro-biotic and it did help – somewhat. Someone else told me about DGL capsules and these were fantastic ! I chewed one before each meal – problem sorted? Well no not really because I have just read that long term use of this is bad for you. I give up!! Looks like it’s back to the Omeprezole!!

Jane, using DGL to help with the withdrawal from omeprazole should not be a problem. You might not need to keep using it forever.

I commented way back in 2012 about my then experience with Omeprazole and Nexium. This was before my Gall Bladder was removed, May 2013 (chronic Cholecystitis) with the gall bladder totally blocked with 21 small finger nail sized stones. As the surgeon had also found a hiatus hernia with signs of reflux during the removal, I was put onto Esomep 40mg tablets to take daily. The healing and recovery from the Gall Bladder removal including a re-section of the duodenum at the same time was pretty draining over the next 6 months..
No improvement to my general health at all after 6 months, still the awful stomach pains, bloating, sleepless nights with leg muscle cramps each time I took a Nexium along many other side effects until June this year. I had by then then Googled “Side Effects from taking PPI`S Long Term” and what I found ( many sources) was symptomatic of what I was suffering, were the effects of long term usage (14 years in my case) of Omeprazol, Nexium, Patoprazol etc.. I discussed my finding with my own doctor and he said “stop taking the Esomeprazol immediately”. I asked him what problems I could expect by stopping them cold turkey and his answer was nil. OK. I stopped taking them but three weeks later had tremendous stomach pains going all round my back, was heaving like I have never had to do in my life before (I am 74). Emergency crew came, gave me a shot of morphine which stopped the pain and the heaving and carted me off to hospital for 5 days. Blood tests, x-rays, CT and MRI scans then a camera down the throat (5th day) showed nothing apart from a little gastritis, no ulcers, no reflux, nada. However I had again been put back onto Pantoprazol this time and three different hospital doctors insisted I take them “for my own good”. Stopping these things suddenly has not been an easy thing, the previous postings here I can only agree with. Stop taking them slowly.
Having stopped the acid blockers all I get is a sour feeling rising in the throat sometimes after eating. Take a half teaspoon of baking powder or bicarbonate of soda in water, chew a Tums, or Rennie to deal with this. A soup spoon of ACV along with a spoonful of honey in water is very helpful.
Aloe Vera juice is also great as is beetroot and or carrot juice as tummy soothers.
Being off the acid blockers has given me a huge boost which I am positive will continue.

Thank you! I will add the Aloe Vera Juice. I was doing better for about a week and have suffered a setback. On the positive side the pain isn’t nearly as bad as it was in July, but the throat and chest irritation and the bubbling gas feeling have made a big hit on my morale. I will keep at!

I was on Prilosec 20 mg 2x/ day for 4 months due to gastritis from taking NSAIDs. I found while on them I was having digestive side effects. So when my endoscopy came back clear, against my doctors wishes I decided to stop. I weaned myself off by pouring beads out 3/4, 1/2, then a quarter over 4 weeks. Every time I went down I would have mild reflux.
When I stopped the pills completely I felt great! Better than I had in four months. So great in fact that I decided to eat spicy food. BIG MISTAKE. I have been slammed with the worst reflux and stomach irritation that has lasted 4 days and counting. I am guessing this was my final rebound that I exacerbated with the spicy food.
I’m taking Pepzin, DGL, and probiotics (as well as eating well) in the hopes I can end this maddening pain. Anyone have a similar experience? How long did it last? I’m taking comfort that since most people don’t repost they have succeeded in ridding themselves of this awful medicine.

I’m on Prilosec and have a history of needing something for heartburn, stomach difficulties, for a long, long time. I previously used Pepcid-AC and Rolaids/Tums for control, with varying degrees of full success, but with almost no acid reflux issues. I was in for a colonoscopy, and was asked if I had other digestive problems, I mentioned the long-term use of Pepcid, Pepcid-AC, and antacids, I was also then scheduled for an endoscopy.
The resulting information led my doctor to prescribe Prilosec, 20mg once a day. I’ve been on it since mid-February 2014. I’ve quit taking any other drugs to help with heartburn. Within the time that I’ve been on the drug to date, I’ve had three horrible acid reflux events, where I had to sit up for four to five hours, sipping water, gargling with water, eating Tum/Rolaids, coughing, spitting, the whole thing, until I could lay elevated on my back in bed to go back to sleep so I could go to work the next day. I know you’ve all been there. It’s not something I would wish on anyone. And, I already knew that the antacids interfered with calcium absorption as about 8 months ago I fell and broke my leg and wrist, and after a bone-scan, I am diagnosed with osteopenia.
I haven’t taken the prescribed drug, and I’d been hoping to help my chances of better calcium absorption by getting off all antacid medication. Didn’t happen. With all this said, I woke up today feeling horrible. I’ve been able eat or drink anything since being on the Prilosec, and needless to say, I ate and drank too much or ate the wrongs things and drank too much or both and was miserable.
I am bloated, lethargic, nauseated, and more and just feeling lousy all around. I came to the internet for suggestions on getting off of Prilosec because this horrible sickness never happened before I got on that drug. I’m not saying that I don’t have a lot to improve to help myself, I’m just saying that this drug isn’t helping me in the big scheme of things. I’m going to change my diet, try to cut back on the drug, use some of the suggested supplements, and even do the wheat/grain and dairy products testing to ensure that I’m not reacting to those things too, in order to get my life back again and feel better and hopefully get healthier.
I’m going to try my best to do this and I hope in a few weeks or so, I can tell you how much better I feel and what I had to do to get there. Good luck my friends with your choices in this regard! I wish you the best success! And I hope to be able to tell you of mine soon.

To w.d.–I’m glad for you that your experience was such a positive one, but many others (myself included) have had a far different result when discontinuing one of the PPI drugs.
The heartburn I had after stopping Prilosec was worse by far than my initial problem. It took a number of trial and error efforts and some grit to finally get away from it completely. I would not tell everyone to expect the same experience–because, as you pointed out, not everyone does. But for those who do get the “rebound” effect when stopping the drug, believe me, it is miserable and real.

The cold hard facts are you don’t need to ween off prilosec. I had GERD/heartburn/acid reflux for 2 years. I thought u needed to ween off after reading all this online. Talked to 3 different docs and they all said u DON’T need to ween off. Just watch what you eat. I stopped drinking soda. stopped eating spicy foods, stopped eating as much junk and changed my diet completely. My Gerd/AR is gone. Once in a while if I slip up and eat something to risque I get a little heartburn but that’s normal. I take a tums and I’m good to go. Stop worrying about weening off and change your diet. The results will be remarkable!!

Seconded. I’ve done the same, and I’ve seen pluses that go above and beyond my digestive system. I’m currently on my way off Prilosec (I even went and got approval from my Dr.) while taking probiotics and hope I don’t have rebound. 16 days after halving the dose the only symptom so far is heightened anxiety, but that’s nothing I haven’t dealt with before. Fingers crossed for the rest!

I’ve been taking Prilosec for about 10 years for acid reflux. Decided to finally get off them about 2 months ago, so slowly started cutting back to 2/3, then 1/2, then a 1/4 pill every few weeks. I’m currently about to complete my first week off of them, and symptoms aside, I’m already noticing a big difference in how I feel.

Ive been on omeprazole for past couple of years now for reflux. I had them previously but lost weight, stopped them with no problems. Losing weight again and want to stop the meds as I have been having a lot of muscle spasms, cramps and tickle in back of throat. I can usually go about 4 days before pain starts. Am currently taking 20mg every 2 days and seem ok. Have asked GP to prescribe 10mg capsules and see how I go. Hopefully if I lose another stone there will be less pressure on my hernia.

S.F. – I also thought a weaning method would work for me. I have been on Omeprazole for a year – 20 mg capsules twice a day. I had radically adjusted my diet and eliminated most acid foods. I created a schedule and spent time each week opening the capsules an removing the tiny medicine beads, and then put the capsules back together. I created a schedule to step down by four beads each week, every other day. This was going well for 5 weeks and then suddenly -bam- big rebound affect. I experienced a lot of acid that caused reflux and pain in lower abdomen area. So I went back on full strength. Very disappointed. I would really like to get off this drug soon. Anyone else try this method with successful results?

I have been reading this post with interest and have started to ween myself of Omeprazole, which I have only been on for about 6 months. Acid reflux was causing some terrible symptoms that are typical but rarely talked about: neck pain, coughing, sore throat and muscle pain.
Now to the interesting part… I finally found out that I have a problem with gluten. I don’t know yet if it is an allergy or full blown Celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disease that can do mad damage to the lining of the small intestine and can cause, you guessed it, acid reflux. After going gluten free all of the symptoms have subsided, and if I accidentally eat gluten, even a smidge of it, the symptoms instantly reappear. The lesson here is to pay close attention to food allergies, especially grain allergies. Reactions to rice, soy, wheat, oats and barley are pretty common but they are such staples in the American diet that one hardly thinks about them.
I tried quitting Omeprazole cold turkey, but no dice. I was back on the meds in two days. It has been causing my mouth, nose and throat to dry up like a have been dining on sand and concrete dust.
I am going to try some of the methods posted here. Will keep you updated. Thanks for the great advice.

I have had a Hiatial Hernia for 35 years. I had a panic attack and went to hospital, took too long for doctor to attend so I went home and eventually discovered that it was my diaphragm reversing from concave to convex making me short of breath. But the hernia was getting bad so I went to the docs. She promptly prescribed me Omeprazole. I had gastroscopy, ECG, bloods, chest X ray the works, found nothing. Meanwhile I have shaky legs and lower abdomen, unable to pass wind, feel just crap all the time for five months, thinking I’ve got some rare cancer they’ve missed etc.
Eventually I realised that the only ‘constant’ in all this was the meds., I stopped them and have gradually recovered, I’m fine most of the time but seem to have mild ‘attacks’, instead, some of it is trapped wind but it’s loads better. It has taken 2 months and no one told me to come off slowly. Another doctor gave me Ranitidine but as soon as I realised it was the same stuff different brand name did not take them either. The doctor tried to tell me it was IBS an stress related. I replied, well, I’ve been a professional counsellor for 25 years, I think I know how to manage stress. Doctors and drug companies are only interested in pushing stuff at you, they don’t care about me as I’m 63, I’m not bothering to go back. I’m managing the reflux with sensible eating and liquid Gaviscon double action now. I’d love to know if anyone else has had the empty feeling and shakiness in lower abdomen and upper thighs, the Internet is full of lies about ‘no side effects’ that’s utter rubbish.

    Hi carol
I read your story. I just want to add that I am on PPIs had my gallbladder out last year and have been to varying drs over the two years because I felt very very I’ll. All tests were negative and I had had a gut full pardon the pun. The last time I was bellied over and a random dr prescribed Zoloft… if I was feeling stressed out and anxious due to my chronic pain this now doubled my stress!
I rang the dr that night and told him straight out that I didn’t need drugs I desperately need to find out what was causing my chronic symptoms! I was now on a mission 2 wks with the help of a gfriend who’s hubby is a dr inset out to do many more tests. I however randomly decided to do a lactose and fructose test and voila I am fructose intolerant and have been feeling on top of the world…. I saw my gastrinteroligist and he quoted you are a very clever lady! Albeit my lengthy 2 year suffering chronic pain. I now am on a mission to get off nexium. I will succeed as I am a very determined individual.
I just simply wanted to share this with others….to never give up and never let drs sway you into thinking you need I call them tranquilizers unnecessarily….. Unless of course you really need them! I hope my post can help others. Ruby Joh

I’m on your side. I have been on Omeprazole for about a month, only to have bad side effects such as insomnia, anxiety attacks, and nightmares. I won’t go out because of blurry vision. I cry myself to sleep. I have dry mouth and feel like I can’t breathe, so I use my nebulizer. I hope I will be healed.

I just stopped this med, and I think it is still in me cause because I still feel the same, and it is is not the buspar or asthma meds. I have been doing well on those. It is the meds for gastritis, and I have another month before I can see a gastritis doc, which is why I stopped meds on my own. I thank God I do not have asthma with this mess.

I ran out of the stuff and decided to get my repeat of the medicine. I had been feeling a little dizzy and had blurry vision and felt lethargic and was wondering what was causing it until I read the symptoms of this tablets.

I stopped right away and started drinking heaps of water and eating lots of vegetables and fruit like apples and pears. I do not feel the pain but still feel a little dizzy every now and then. I promised myself no more of these tablets .

I was suffering from upper abdominal bloating that felt like it stretched across my upper abdomen. I also have acid reflux. the Dr. said that it could be a symptom of inflammation, and put me on Omeprazole 20mg. I have taken it for 3 days straight and on the third night after taking it, I started to feel dizzy and nauseous. I woke up this morning and am feeling not well like I’m coming down with something. I also feel lightheaded and slightly dizzy. I hate this feeling.
It’s definitely the drug after reading countless forums. I am refusing to take it. This drug is not right. Symptoms like these are not healthy and who knows what kind of long term damage we are doing to our bodies, especially if people are having horrible reactions when trying to stop it. I’m done. I also felt like my hip bones and hand were aching when sleeping due to it which I have never had before. Very strange.
I was told by another Dr. that it might be my gallbladder, so why take something that is unnecessary? I’m getting an ultrasound on the weekend to determine if it is. I’m not having horrible attacks so I don’t think I’ll need it removed (I hope). But symptoms like these should definitely light up a bulb in Dr.’s heads that it’s not good. It doesn’t seem like anything good is coming from it. How is it good if it might alleviate your heartburn, but cause severe multiple other symptoms?

YES… I have been able to get off omperazole. I was put on these tablets for gastritis, after a couple of weeks the pain settled down and I thought brill, the doctor said to keep taking the tablets to prevent another attack, how long for I said and he said FOR LIFE!! I stayed on them for a year with many bad side effects.
I started getting a fast heartbeat and palpitations, (didn’t think it was the tablets at 1st) I also started to feel really tired all the time, then stomach problems started… gas bloating… IBS, my resting heart rate was 85-90 when it should be 70 no wonder I was feeling unwell, went to the docs who looked at me like I was imaging these things but prescribed me 10mg tablets instead of 20mg for a month, (it is very important to reduce, don’t just stop).
I started to reduce, I never had acid problems but I had now, I took half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a cup of water if I had a bad flare up, I also ate half an apple 4 times a day, I was able to manage to stay on 10mg for 2 weeks, then I stopped, I take DGL before a big meal to prevent gastritis which is brilliant! and I take 75g ranatadine which you can get over the counter when I have some acid and of course lovely juicy apples everyday. I feel 10 years younger, I have a normal heartbeat and a normal stomach no more IBS… it’s the best decision I have ever made.

I have had acid reflux/Gerd symptoms (bad acid/heartburn/trouble swallowing food/bloated stomach/rumbling stomach/gas feeling trapped inside stomach and esophagus) on and off for 5 years now. My doctor diagnosed me with GERD. He prescribed me Omeprazole 40mg per day. Have been taking it for about 2 months. Haven’t had any problems really swallowing food, once in a while I will get some gas trapped inside and have to burp to feel better but now I am feeling really bloated and gassy like my stomach is full of gas and I feel like I’m putting on weight.
I have read a lot about prolonged use of omeprazole and PPI not being good for you and I feel as if that is what is causing my stomach to be so bloated and gassy. Am I wrong? I just know I want to get off it for good but i fear that as soon as I stop or try to wean off it my GERD and acid reflux symptoms will come back with a vengeance. Also my omeprazole is in capsule form (little beads inside) so I highly doubt I can wean back a proper dose with those.
Can I substitute over the counter prilosec 20mg in my weaning process or do the pills work differently than the caps? If anyone has a helpful weaning method with dosage that have proven to work to be off omeprazole for good I would greatly appreciate it. I am so tired of living in fear of not being able to come off this and I want to just watch what i eat and feel normal again. PLEASE HELP.

I’ve had lots of problems pre and post omneprazole.
    Pre omneprazole:
Attacks of sever fatigue and diahorrea and occasional sleepless nights.
With omneprazole I was diagnosed as having Gastritis and given 40mg per day for three weeks and not eating wheat, coffee, spicy food and alcohol. Some symptoms improved but new ones appeared. Pain in the guts waking me up at night and acid reflux. I then left the country and went travelling for a few months in asia after a month symptoms had all but gone but reoccurred with stress, using meditation I could reduce the stress related symptoms.
I then reintroduced wheat spicy food and alcohol and stopped taking omneprazole the only symptom was the occasion constipation and sleepless night. When I got back to work some symptoms resumed sleepless nights, cramps and occasional bouts of fatigue. I quit the coffee and nothing changed. Enjoying my coffee again now. I quit alcohol and nothing changed. I quit wheat and nothing changed.
I have now been off omneprazole and still have occasional cramps and sleepless nights. Nothing has changed but at least I am not taking drugs. Umeboshi tea every night (which is highly alkaline) water with meals all help with acid attack as does lots of sleep.
    Good night

I am new to this site and trying to get info on the side effects of stopping Prilosec. What is DGL and HCL? I see them referred to in some of the comments.
    Thank you.
People’s Pharmacy response: DGL is deglycyrrhizinated licorice https://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2010/08/20/licorice-fights-reflux/
HCl is hydrochloric acid. Some people take it in tablets to supplement stomach acid. Others prefer to drink a small amount of apple cider vinegar.

I stopped taking Prilosec (40 mg/day) 13 days ago switching to hot water with lemon (an alkaloid, oddly enough) and 1 T baking soda in 1/2 glass of water to handle the extreme heartburn that now comes within 20 minutes of eating or drinking. I can handle that but what developed within 2 days and has now continued to date (11 days now) is constant diarrhea (also within 20 a 30 mins apter a meal). There is no sign of it stopping. Is this a normal detox withdrawal from Prilosec? How long will it last?

I have been taking PPIs for 3 years, along with some other medication to empty the stomach. I’d become worried about taking them long term, but was in agony whenever I tried to cut down, so never dared to stop them completely. It got to the point where even the large doses I was taking were no longer working. I’ve also tried many herbal remedies along with the medication (aloe vera, dcl, dandelion root, slippery elm, enzymes etc.) Some have really helped, but only for a time.
I’ve been on 40mg omeprazole and 30mg of metoclopramide (stomach emptier) for 6 months, but my reflux just kept getting worse. I see a chiropractor for back problems, and mentioned it to her. She suggested just going totally detox on a juice only diet. I decided to just bite the bullet and give it a go, I couldn’t take the sleepness nights and constant pain anymore so thought anything would be worth it. For the last 5 days I’ve had a banana, cup of coffee and homemade juices, all including red apples, and nothing else. I took half my medication on the first day but haven’t taken any since. I’ve had no reflux whatsoever. Obviously I can’t do this long term, but I’m hoping that this will alkalize my system and give me a reset. So far so good. Once the week’s over I plan to do the juices during the day and have a small dinner, avoiding my trigger foods. Finger’s crossed.

    I did it. Here’s how.
I bought a jeweler’s scale, and empty gelatin capsules from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009B7TOK0/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also bought a product called “mastic gum”. http://www.amazon.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Mastic-Gum-Count/dp/B0013OVVAK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1380252290&sr=8-3&keywords=masticI think holistic medicine and “herbal supplements” are total BS, but this stuff worked, I believe. Use the scale and the gel caps to cut the dose of omeprazole.
    Here’s what I did.
Weeks 1 and 2: 2 caps of mastic gum every day, 1 cap of omeprazole every other day
Weeks 3 and 4: 2 camps of mastic gum every day, EXACT 75% dosage of omeprazole every other day
Weeks 5 and 6: 2 caps of mastic gum every day, EXACT 50% dosage of omeprazole every other day
Weeks 7 and 8: 1 cap of mastic gum every day, EXACT 25% dosage of omeprazole every other day
Week 9: 1 cap of mastic gum every other day, no omeprazole
Week 10: stop taking mastic gum
MEASURE CAREFULLY – the omeprazole is in little time-release beads inside the original capsules. Your measurements must be exact.
Now, I get heartburn if I eat too much, which is **as it should be**. Tums are my friend from time to time, but the frequency of the mild heartburn is going down.
THIS METHOD WORKS. I tried several times to just stop and could not.

Back in October of 2012 I came down with some sort of virus that caused some pretty severe gastritis. My gastroenterologist prescribed me 3 months of 40mg daily omerprazole. I didn’t know at the time, but this drug is extremely difficult to get off of. I started reading online and found a way that helped me get off of it very slowly and with little discomfort. It took me around 3 months to get off the medication. To make life easier you will want a pill cutter and deglycyrrhizinated licorice which you can find on Amazon. If your doctor prescribed you hard pills, you can continue using them, otherwise you will need to purchase the OTC version since they are hard and can be cut by a pill cutter. Note that this method worked for me starting at 40mg from my doctor, you can adjust this method if you are on 30 or 20 mg dosage.
On the first day I used a pill cutter to cut one 20mg pill in half. The half pill plus a full pill equals 30mg. Essentially I cut my dosage by 25%. You wont feel any difference in the first day, but by day 2 or 3 you will begin to feel rumbling in your stomach and minor to medium level discomfort. This is expected as your stomach is starting to produce more acid. It will calm down over the next 2 weeks. If the discomfort gets too bad, you can take up to 2 deglycyrrhizinated licorice tabs per a day. And if you are starting to feel severe pain, take the other 10mg half of the pill. But be warned, if you continue to take the 10mg half pills, you are not reducing your dosage and will never get off this drug.
After 2 to 3 weeks, my stomach started to calm back down and the discomfort went away. That means my body became accustomed to the new dosage. It’s time to cut the dosage down again. This time I take out one pill completely so that I am down to a single 20mg pill. The same symptoms will arise in about 2 to 3 days. Ride out the discomfort, drinking room temperature water to help dilute the stomach acid.
The drop from 30mg to 20mg was more difficult for me than the drop from 40mg to 30mg. So I continued on 20mg for about a month.
At this point I began to cut the 20mg pill in half each day. This took me down to 10 mg every day. The same symptoms of discomfort and bubbling in the stomach came back for a 4 or 5 days. This was the worst drop of the bunch. I continued on this dosage for another 4 weeks.
At which point I stopped with the remaining 10mg. I had some mild discomfort for 3 days but after that… I was done.
Good luck to anyone trying to get off this drug.

Have been taking omeprazole 40mg daily for a number of years. Recently I’ve had gastritis. Have decided to come off omeprazole, after researching long term side effects and realising I have quite a lot of them.I have diverticulitis and a hiatus hernia, and have noticed some of the remedies suggested are not recommended if you have these conditions. Anyone out there who can help please.

I had been doing well with the heartburn after doing L-glutamine and so on but I had some sort of relapse recently and I was taking the L-glutamine again and it wasn’t working. Someone told me about mastic gum and said it was the key to her stopping her heartburn so I bought some yesterday and I already see a slight improvement. I wanted to be sure and share it with you all because I know some of us struggle no matter what.

I have for a second time gone on Prilosec for approx. 3 months due to an endoscopy showing painful (but Benign) irritation in the esophagus. The Gastro doc said I had to go on it for at least 4 months to heal irritation. I caved and did what he said, even though past experience showed me with depleted B 12, magnesium, etc. I felt so good on the Prilosec at first, could eat anything without problems, it was awesome!
Because of this, gained weight (eating everything), and a month ago started with terrible side effects – jitters, anxiety, tingly fingers, toes and tip of tongue, fatigue, not sleeping well at night, just feeling awful!!! Five days ago, stopped cold turkey.. doing ok right now. very minor pain, (mine always hits between shoulder blades) gassiness, nausea.
Been using ACV, Aloe Vera, Digestive Enzymes, Probiotics. My question is how much of any of these remedies and at what time should I take them? I am frantic thinking the severe pain will come back since I DO NOT want to take and more Prilosec. Any help and also can’t live without 1 cup of coffee in am, is that doable??

Check out Karen R Hurd’s book “And They Said It Wasn’t Possible.” Karen is a nutritionist who claims that beans, as in legumes, are very healing to the digestive system. This soluble fiber food attaches itself to the bile and removes toxins from the body. If we don’t eat this, the bile recirculates and the bile becomes more and more likely to cause digestive issues… serious ones. (She has a facebook page too.) So I’m planning to eat beans (and vegetables-to help reduce acidity) as part of the regimen to wean off of omeprazole. I think there are alot of other good suggestions here too. thanks.

I stopped taking omeprazole several months ago after about 10 years; it was casually prescribed after an endoscopy revealed hiatal hernia (my complaint was GERD). After the initial rebound I feel much better as far as the GERD but I have now a chronic feeling of a urinary tract infection (doctor says no bacteria in the urine however) and a lot of itching and inflammation in all of my shall we say bottom areas.
Is there any research regarding the long term use of PPIs causing a serious change in the gut microbiome which then wreaks havoc when you withdraw? I am trying various probiotics but no luck so far with the UTI-like feeling. Any suggestions as far as probiotics that really work?

You don’t have to take the beads in the capsule: the instructions on the packet say you can open them and pour contents on to food. Ive been counting out the beads, and gradually reducing; so far so good.

Thought I would give an update, I began taking the HCL betaine with pepsin and did the test, finding out I need 4 tablets with each decent meal (I take one or two with things like a chicken sandwich) and since being on them for a week- I have had ZERO acid reflux or burning in my tummy!! No matter what I eat! I am still taking the two slippery elm first thing on a morning, but I forgot today as we had the plumber round and I didn’t suffer for not taking them, and I am still taking 2 DGL chewable tablets at bedtime just for a precautionary measure, so far so good, I really am glad that it seems I have too little acid, and that has what it has been all along and that there is something I can do about it!
I have also just bought a multi digestive enzyme that also contains probiotics and peppermint oil, so will see if that helps even further as my tummy is still distended, and my throat ulcers are still there- not as many but still there, I am hoping that after I have been on the HCL for a few weeks/months, that my tummy and ulcers will disappear.

Sorry to hear that Wickedlady. I have been there! When I (rarely now) have a night like that, I break down and chew calcium carbonate tablets (like Tums or rolaids- not sure what you call them in the UK)- not ideal but better than the other (PPIs.) I also sometimes take papaya enzymes if I ended up over eating. You chew 3 tabs after eating. Also, much of my stomach discomfort became better when I started eating a Paleo Diet. The only time I have issues now is if I break with that. Best of luck- hope you feel better soon.

Well, I had a relapse last night after being off Omeprazole for 13 days , I was overly full even though I had eaten 6 hours before bedtime, and I began to feel very nauseous and I had acid from my tummy to my throat. I had to sit up until 4am and chew on some DGL to help with the burning, I don’t know why this has happened, but I am finding it hard to be feeling so ill again, I still don’t feel right this morning. I really don’t know what to do now, my doctor here in the UK is useless, so I don’t know what to do next, I have some HCL betaine with pepsin, does anyone here think they would be useful, or can anyone here help with any advice? Thanks all, I rue the day I ever started Omeprazole I feel like an old woman even though I am only 37.

I just wanted to share my experience with Omeprazole. I have always suffered on and off over the years with acid reflux, but was always very mild and always responded to Zantac 75mg, however in February this year it got very bad all of a sudden and even Zantac’s would not work as well as they once had, I went to the doctor and he prescribed me a month course of 20mg Omeprazole once a day, and of course when I took it the very first day i got relief, the acid reflux had gone, well, I thought, this is a miracle!!
I got a repeat prescription after the first month had ran out and I was loving being able to eat and drink what I wanted, and I had no side effects, but then I decided to look in to how safe Omeprazole was, and I read what everyone else had read about how unsafe it was, it scared me.
So after being on it for 8 weeks I decided I was going to come off it, so I decided to start with every other day with a plan to every third day the following week etc, however I began to get rather scared of this drug being in my system at all, and not only that but my lower abdomen had swelled up- so after the first week of every other day I decided to come off them cold turkey, I didn’t get any acid reflux but by day three of being off them I decided I should get some herbal back up, looking online I looked to see what was working for most people, so I bought DGL chewable Licorice tablets and Slippery elm capsules,This is what I did and am still doing now:
I began to take two slippery elm caps opened in a little warm water first thing on a morning, waiting about 20-30 minutes before I ate breakfast, then same again mid afternoon, then 20-30 mins before my main meal at dinner I took TWO DGL tablets, and then another two about 20 minutes before I lay down at bedtime
..and so far (10 days today!) there has been NO acid reflux (the most I had is a tiny slight warm feeling in my tummy which I got about day 5-6, but nothing bad at all, and the slippery elm and DGL sorted it out also and I haven’t had anything since then!) which I am so amazed at because I am eating normal foods that I could not eat previously to the Omeprazole! I am also having a few celery sticks a day, most of the time after my main meal (about 2 hours after) and probiotic yoghurt.
HOWEVER I am rather suffering thanks to being on this drug, since coming off my lower abdomen STILL hasn’t gone down, even though I don’t feel bloated and my bowel movements are regular and normal, I have ulcers on the back of my throat (my doctor says it is a bacterial infection) but I have never had them before in my life!! I truly think these two things are due to some kind of “damage” the 2 and a half months of Omeprazole have done. I am hoping that eventually my tummy will go down and that the throat ulcers will go too.
I wanted to share my experience and what has worked for me so far and the withdrawal effects I have got form only being on Omeprazole for TWO AND A HALF MONTHS! I will NEVER go back on them again. I wish everybody luck and good health coming off Omeprazole and I hope what works for me, will work for you too!

Just at day 5 of d/c’ing Prevacid – after being on PPI’s for 7 years. I have severe reflux/ heartburn and a hiatal hernia complicating things. Changed diet to Wheat-Belly Diet (Cookbook – recipes are actually fabulous) recommendations – no wheat or any grains. Have been on low-carb for years, but if we did have bread rarely it was always whole grain and high protein. Doing better off the wheat, off chocolate and off mint.
The chocolate and mint cause a direct physiological change to the sphincter (tight band-like ring) between esophagus and stomach which relaxes the band and allows reflux of acid up into esophagus. Sleeping now propped up in bed at 45 degree angle – and hoping that doesn’t last forever, but I am only on day 5 so of no meds; I will have patience.
Only sleep on left side or on back (elevated). Finish last meal at least 3 hours prior to bed. No coffee or wine during this phase until finally healed (more patience). They, as well as spicy foods, contribute to burning sensation if you’re already in pain – but they don’t have the same physiologic effect on the sphincter as chocolate and mint have – they just burn what’s already irritated. Everyone here has been so helpful.
I will write back in two weeks with progress (hoping). Oh, I am managing also with digestive enzymes before and after meals, and Tums to follow. One effect of the PPI’s (prevacid, nexium, protonix, etc) is that you don’t absorb your calcium and prolonged usage can lead to Osteopenia or Osteoporosis. I have osteopenia and so that is a problem. Also the B12 can be a big problem. Get your levels checked and if low get the shots.
And while on PPI’s make sure your Vit-D levels are in the mid-range or just a bit higher in the Normal range – not at the bottom or you won’t absorb calcium; plus you’ll have other issues with low Vit-D. Anyway, thanks all for your help.

Some people don’t realize that they can’t just stop taking the medicine, that they have to slowly cut the dosages back. When I tried to stop cold turkey it lasted for about a week. Then PAIN! By slowly lowering my dosage over a period of 3 months us a low carb diet, I’ve now been off off PPIs for a year now. I feel great!
Just remember that by being on these medicines for so long that your body will react negatively to the added acid. Slowly adjust. I also take papaya supplements after my meals and also a chew with probiotics. I truly believe that this helped my digestive system get back on track.

    Moon,
Thank you very much for replying. I’ve posted comments like this before on other blogs and never got a response. I would like to add a few more symptoms to my list. I’m not sure if they are all related or not.
Back in Aug 2010 when I developed black stool along with bad heart burn; once I got on Tecta which cured the black stool but caused my throat issues, in Oct of that year I was in a car accident that gave me a concussion. I started noticing painful lumps all over my upper thighs and stomach and side. Not all of the lumps were painful. I also started seeing flashing lights at night when I would go into my bedroom and shut off all the lights and shut the door. These flashing lights started causing me to experience severe vertigo.
The doctor said it was likely caused by the car accident and ignored my symptoms. He checked the lumps and said they were benign Lymphoma and referred me to yet another specialist.
The specialist performed surgery and removed the lump in my left side that was causing a lot of pain. The day surgery was not very pleasant. Anyways, after the surgery he said the Lymphoma was non cancerous and not to worry. I was so relieved and happy.
Within the next few months more lumps started forming trigger beside where the other one was removed. I never got any more of the lumps checked and continued on. The reason why I bring these other symptoms up is because I believe that they were caused by the PPI’s. remember, I never had any of these additional symptoms before taking a PPI.
Today, I’m keeping an eye on the lymphomas and only have a few painful ones below my left breast. The doctor checked them and said that they were benign lymphomas again and not to worry. I haven’t had the flashing lights in my eyes again for the past 3 months. I had my eyes checked and they said everything was ok and I should get an MRI. My doctor said it wasn’t necessary and to stop worrying about it. But despite these additional symptoms, the worse ones are how I feel in my throat.
I can handle the mild heart burn and the stomach bloating (most times), but the weird throat sensations I feel when at work is really causing stress on me. I don’t even want to speak to anyone anymore.
Having said that, I wanted to give you an update on my diet change. I’m on day 3 of completely going off all PPIs, and tums, etc… I have the exact same symptoms as I did when on the PPIs so I’m convinced they have done no good for me. I have added taking Lactate before meals, cut out most dairy, cut out all coffee (for 1 year now), alcohol (for 3 months), and eating smaller meals. I also started taking digestive enzymes, vitamin B12, fiber pills, and coconut oil for the past 3-4 days. I take roughly 12-14 vitamin pills per day now.
What I’ve noticed is I fell a bit mentally better, and my bloating has reduced some, but I still have the same GERD like symptoms as I’ve had for the past 2.5 years. If I don’t eat anything, I get severe heart burn, and if I eat, I feel good for about 30mins after. I feel ok when I’m home and walking around in my PJ’s for some reason. One last key piece I forgot to mention is yesterday when I had white crackers with salt I got severe bloating and heartburn that lasted 2 hours.
I will try the Paleo diet once I give my current diet a try for a few weeks.
    Thanks for your help Moon.

    LH,
Don’t listen to them! They told me the same thing when I was 24. I am now 41. I was on PPIs for 15 years and I am convinced they are what caused all the issues I have now. Go out and buy Practical Paleo and do what it says for diet and healing the gut. Just cutting gluten is not going to be enough. I quit the PPI cold turkey in Jan 2012. I went gluten free in May, Grain free (paleo plus potatoes) in november and THAT was the key for me. Also, if you have IBS symptoms, get tested for SIBO.
See if you can find a doc that practices functional or integrative medicine. I hope this helps. I was diagnosed with all the same things as you except the larynx thing. I am 90% better now. I have a few other issues you may not have, that I am working on but I feel great and rarely have heartburn. If I do, a sip of water takes care of it.

It all started 2.5 years ago when I turned 30. I was under an enormous amount of stress due to being ripped off 30k purchasing a mold infested home, being involved in my other home being completely flooded, and getting married. I used to be a pretty good athlete and exercised regularly, and took a lot of protein, vitamins, and supplements. I also drank a lot of coffee, and energy drinks.
August 2010, I started getting black stools and vicious heart burn. This lasted for about 3 months. In the meantime I went to the doctor and he said I must have an ulcer so he put me on Tecta (PPI). The issues I had at the time had been with bloating and chess pain, and of course black stool. I later got tested for an ulcer and esophagus cancer. All results came back negative. The first month on Tecta caused the black stool to go away, however, my slight pain that was in my chest moved up towards my throat. I no longer could swallow well, and whenever I would speak to people in a meeting at work I would lose my voice.
I thought for sure the worse, and figured I must have cancer and will likely be dying soon. The doctor has changed my medication 5 times and none of them work at all. The first doctor diagnosed me with GERD, the second diagnosed me with LRD (larynx reflex disease), and the most recent surgeon diagnosed me with IBS, and Anxiety. He says he doesn’t even believe I have GERD at all. I’m so pissed that no doctor knows wtf is going on.
I’ve most recently been taking 40mg of omeprazole (20 mg twice per day), and still suffer greatly with bloating, shaky body, and severe throat, and esophagus pain. I also have pain under both my shoulder blades. 2 weeks ago I noticed that cereal in the morning caused me to bloat up excessively. I decided to quit dairy products. To my surprise, I was instantly cured… well at least for 3 days. I quit dairy and omeprazole at the same time and felt good for 3 days, but my heart burn like symptoms came back 10 times worse.
I was forced to go back on it again, but am now taking Lactase as well. I still have the same symptoms so I’m planning on cutting out gluten next. The specialist says that I will likely develop esoghagus cancer in the next 8 years if I don’t get this resolved. I’m so frustrated because no one seems to want to help or knows what’s going on.

      Hi Lh
I hope you are doing well.

The situation I’m in is very similar. It all started 3 months ago, I was an athlete, I used to workout daily but my job was very stressful. One day I started to feel a lingering disturbance in my stomach, and a nagging belching. Then came the heartburn, chest pain and sore throat. After an endoscopy my doctor diagnosed me with GERD and put me on ppi(40mg Esomeprazole daily) which gave me temporary relief.Although it took away my chest pain instantly, at times I would still experience sore throats. After a few weeks I started to experience it’s side affects like fatigue, muscle spams, a frequent urge to urinate , disorientation. I don’t think PPIs help me in the long run. When i tried to wean off of them i experienced the worst reflux ever.

Would you mind giving me advice and tell me what worked for you and what didn’t. Thank you
      Richard

I am simply writing this in the hopes to help others trying to get off of omeparazole. I decided it would be best last week after about 5 years, and for 3 days was suffering with terrible gerd. I took DGL before every meal, but the relief was minimal. Then I spoke to a family member who had a heart transplant a few years ago. He takes so many meds it caused him terrible heart burn and his doctor suggested starting with 1/2 tsp. baking soda in 1/2 glass of water mid-day (he didn’t want him taking more due to the salt that would be bad for him) but said he could go up to 1 tsp. baking soda in a full glass of water. That this mix would also be good for his kidneys and not harmful.
I started with the 1/2 to 1/2 ratio, and felt relief almost immediately. For now I am taking that twice a day and it’s like a miracle at how good I feel. Of course, everyone should check with their own doctor before starting this program, but I for one feel “cured” and know in the long run 1/2 tsp. in 1/2 glass of water is the plan I will be on for life.
Just wanted to share this easy, and painless method of withdrawal from omeprazole.

I quit Prilosec and have had no side effects unless it has affected my breathing. I have had difficulty with my breathing. Has anyone else? I don’t know if this is a side effect or something else. It is not my heart as I had an ekg and bloodwork. I am already on wheat free and sugar free diet.

An update on me- I am almost completely acid reflux free since going “Paleo”- specifically, not eating any grains. ANYONE suffering from any kind of digestive complaint should check out this book- “Practical Paleo” – you don’t have to take my word for it and just buy it. Go look at it in the bookstore first. The first half of the book is almost entirely an explanation of how the gut works and what causes problems with it.

I started on 10mg omeprazole a decade ago, did not fully stop acid, a few years ago, had really bad ulcers and doc put me on 20mg, this worked fine, BUT, the young doc looked at me and said take one a day for “the rest of your life”! 60’ish may seem old to him, but not to me, so trying to wean off them, find one every 2nd day works fine! point is 10mg a day not same as 20mg every 2nd day! My theory… you need a “concentration pulse” to switch off the acid? experiment is on going….. btw digestive biscuits are a gentle, “emergency” source of alkali if I forget Omeprazole for 3 days or so and start to get acid reflux…

I think getting rid of stress should be the first priority if you are considering to quit Omeprazole. I have been suffering from stomach pain and high acidity occasionally since last 5 years. I have observed that during the times my stress level was low I was able to taper off the medicine quite easily. So, some meditation or other relaxation exercised can be very helpful.

    Hi Caroline,
I went off cold turkey. I tried everything and nothing really worked- the ACV, the DGL, but the problem is I also have Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and some people have suggested that this condition can make acid reflux symptoms worse. I see my doc tomorrow and I am going to also go on the Paleo plan for eating and see if that helps my reflux symptoms. I added digestive enzymes and they seem to help the reflux. There is a chewable papaya one that I find really pleasant and when taken after eating it takes care of the acid- but it has Mannitol in it- a sugar alcohol that feeds the bacterial overgrowth in my small intestine so I had to stop taking it. If you don’t have bacterial overgrowth it might be great for you.

I would suggest weaning yourself off over a week or two try every other day for a week and then every 3 days with the help of orange flavour rennee/tums. What ever you decide you need to think about how omeprazol works. I’m not a doctor but I have read that this is how and it makes sense.
It suppresses the acid producing cells in your stomach which causes your body to produce more acid making cells which then become suppressed. (not having enough acid in your stomach has serious effects on mental and physical health due to poor digestion and not being able to get enough goodness out of food like minerals and vitamins) which means you end up with far to many acid producing cells. So when you stop taking the omeprozol the suppressed cells start to produce acid again.
As there are to many of them your heart burn/ acid reflux will be even worse than when you went on them in the first place.
It can take up to six months for your cells to get back to normal, there is no quick fix so while your waiting for your body to return to normal you have to be strict with your diet and life style.
Eat little meals, try eating red apple and almonds drink water, try liquorice (but not to much) try aloe vera juice don’t drink anything fizzy this will cause heart burn as can caffeine chocolate and alcohol and mint try correcting your posture as poor posture can cause pressure on your stomach. as can being over weight.
I never found a doctor who told me there was a natural way and I did ask on countless visits to the doctors but they all basically said I needed medication. But I have not had bad heartburn for months. I’ve need a rennee from time to time but hardly ever.
I know that things are different for everyone one but this is how I got off omerazole it took ages but I feel normal again physically and mentally.

    FORGET DGL, forget everything else.
JUST… CHEW…. GUM! (sugar free preferably)
Chew it after after meal, and chew it in between meals when necessary. No more reflux. No more meds.
I took prilosec for years and have been off easily and painlessly for about a year now. No looking back, and as a good side effect I always have fresh breath.

    JDA,
I was on PPIs for 20 years. I now have severe problems. I would stop them, and get yourself to a functional medical doctor or a naturopath and have them help you heal your acid reflux. In the long run, it will be cheaper for you to deal with it naturally now. Trust me. All those symptoms you mention- I lived with them for years and years before I made the connection between them and my PPI usage. I wish you good luck.

I was prescribed omeprazole 8 days ago. I have found no relief in the indigestion and heart burn but now feel awful. My arms and legs are very sore. Me knees and elbows hurt all the time. I have began to panic about every little ailment I have and suspect the worse. I do not want to stop taking it as the doctor told me to take it daily for a month until they do a scope of my throat to see if there is any damage from acid reflux. I am only 28 and my body feels well past that since I have taken this medicine for a week. Does anyone know if these side effects will go away or should I stop the medication?

Hi I’ve written here before about my heart burn and I know everyone is different but I wanted to share my experience.
I stopped taking omeprazole about 4 months ago I stopped eating chocolate, caffeine, fizzy drinks, mint and acidic fruit and veg I also stopped drinking alcohol. I had also stopped eating wheat a year before. At the start I had to use orange flavour rennee mostly at night but now four months later I have lost weight and am going days without a rennee.
    Things I stopped eating:
Chocolate mint alcohol because they relaxes the sphincter (the valve that stops acid going up the esophagus)
Acidic fruit and veg e.g. Tomatoes and oranges mainly but i just judge it on how much I’m going to eat and how acidic it is. less acid added to the stomach.
fizzy drinks as this apparently causes pressure in the stomach and increases the risk of heart burn.
I Start eating wheat free liquorice but not to much because it can cause high blood pressure there are lots of articles about liquorice helping with acid reflux
also I found a small amount of aloe vera juice each day helps.
I also eat lots of red apples and bananas.
The only things I drink are water fruit tea and the occasional apple juice or smoothy.
My main diet is rice and vegetables but I can have anything without the excluded foods.
I also sleep on my left side which helps stop the acid going back up your throat when you lie down.
It’s a complete life style change but the benefits are hardly any heart burn, weight loss, and no omeprozole which equals good mental and physical health. I hope this helps some one as I was so upset on omeprazole and the side effects are horrid. good luck if your trying to come off acid suppressing drugs :)

That list of foods to eat while having acid reflux sounds dangerous to me. Beer, cola, root beer is NOT good because they are carbonated which brings up the acid. Hot dogs are too spicy. Ketchup has tomatoes, too acidic. I would look for a more bland diet.

I have suffered from GERD for a long time. One day I got up, started to walk 1.5 miles and stretched my body. I removed the following from my diet: No fat, butter, cream, only olive oil. No milk, a lot of water every day, like 1/2 a gallon. No alcohol. A lot of veggies and fruits, lean meat, ham and fish, and turkey, chicken, everything lean. No pasta. Now it seems difficult but what happened was worth it: I got rid of GERD. I would have a couple of glasses of wine, pasta, cakes, all in reasonable portions only during the week-ends. No food after 6 PM. Try it, you will lose weight (because GERD is a result of weight gain — Eating too rich and too much) and you will feel much much better!

I have been of it a month now. Side effects were vertigo, light headedness, fatigue. I had the rebound reflux etc. I have stopped eating gluten and lactose, which seems to help. I have probiotics. Zinc helps digestion. I don’t listen to people who say I could probably eat it, because they are. A strict diet of what works. I have concentrated aloe vera juice and juice green vegetables. Some mild indigestion but much better. the tiredness persists though, and I suspect nexium induced anemia.

I was hospitalized with Omeprazole side effects. Got off it and it was hard and I am still experiencing GERD but my symptoms seem to be coming down. There is new research that melatonin has some positive effect on GERD. Search on “circadian rhythm GERD” and you will find some scientific evidence that suggests GERD is a problem related to your biological clock. Fix it and you could maybe possibly fix GERD.

I was prescribed lanzaprozole short term in 2006 & have been on & off it ever since… but increasingly ‘on’ because each time I try to come off the withdrawal is worse. Basically my tummy is on fire for days. I can’t even remember why I was given it initially but since then I’ve been going to the Dr. more & more with odd stomach complaints: first it was esophegal narrowing, then hiatal hernia, then gallstones & mild appendicitis.
Now I have candida & chronic giardiasis too – both confirmed by tests. Before I started this medicine I had a sensitive tummy but now it is all but stopped functioning. The punch line is that 5 out of my 6 new ailments is linked to PPI overuse. But no Dr. ever explored that cause. So I am stopping it regardless of the agony this causes.
glad to hear others only suffered the withdrawal for a month as this may be a tolerable period.
My tip for relief is soluble magnesium although, nothing really calms that fiery, my-tummy-is-digesting-itself pain. Hate to think what the rebound may be doing to me… to all of us!!

How long would it take to wean my self off Prilosec? I Started on it on 4/1/12 and the dose was increased from 20mg to 40mg every day. I now have extreme dry mouth and have attacks where the gas backs up my throat and gets stuck. When that happens I can’t breathe. Next, I burp than I feel better. Any advise I would be grateful.

Chances are that you, and many others here including myself have the “Helicobacter Pylori” infection in our guts. Home test kits are cheap enough. I just got one for $38 online. This infection is known to cause most gastritis and ulcer symptoms. Have you been specifically tested for this?

Sounds like you might want to look at what you are eating, in a wide, general sense. For example, are you eating a lot of sugar (fructose?) If so, you might have a little bit of Candida overgrowth in the gut. What about wheat? Might be sensitive to gluten. All I can say is, stay off those PPIs. I am battling severe nutritional deficiencies due to having been put on those PPIs for 15 years. They interfere with your ability to process food and nutrients. Certain foods give me gas like soy, obviously anything carbonated, any kind of fruit at all (it just ferments in the gut), candy, etc.
    What are you eating?

I woke up on March 31st after a night of excessive drinking a little hung over. Had some soup, had a nap, felt a little ill, had a glass of orange juice and within an hour had horrible pain in the pit of my stomach and extreme gas pains and burping.
I tried probiotics, did not help. Ended up in urgent care 2 days later, doctor guessed GERD or an ulcer and put me on 40mg of Omeprazole, for 2 months. Pain was gone within days but I was STILL burping incessantly. After a meal, then especially 3-5 hours after. So bad I couldn’t sleep and would have to pace the floor.
Requested an ultrasound after 10 days, all other internal organs are fine.
Burping still occurring, went to Gastroenterologist after 3 weeks. He told me to take the Omeprazole one more week, and then stop and see if the burping dissipates, that is could be causing the burping at this point. Anyone else had that issue?
I have been off of it 3 days. The burps have significantly decreased, but are not gone. I have not experienced any pain yet, which I am thankful for. But the burping is terribly embarrassing, and at this point I feel like it’s going to last forever! Frustrating.
Also, I really can’t afford the endoscopic procedure that has been recommended if this keeps up. I wonder how long I should wait to have that done?

Thanks for this info which is very sound advice. I have ordered the DGL along with Aloe Vera gels and hopefully they will be arriving shortly. I have also read that Mastic Gum chews are also very helpful but have been unable to trace any locally (Switzerland) but will try to get some in England next month. I have Vitamin D3 in my daily Magnesium tablets and ACV is something that we use daily and have done for years.
Vitamin B15 I have in tablet form made from brewers yeast but had stopped taking them and all the other vitamin pills before the various tests I have been having since early February. The depression I mentioned in my last post has gone and hopefully will stay away. The Omeprazole withdrawal symptoms are definitely receding.
The side effects from Omeprazole started in 2000 and got really bad at the end of 2009. Indigestion, bloating, sleepless nights and so on. I was taking sleeping pills to counteract the wakening in the night and it became a vicious circle. My doctor was prescribing the acid blockers and the sleeping pills but was convinced December 2009 that I should double the Omeprazole dosage which made things even worse. Two weeks later he prescribed Nexium 40 mg which were even more awful, so much so that I was staggering dizzily all over the place. I took the Nexium for 5 days and took them back. He again insisted that I should continue to take Omeprazole.
It was only in January this year when my patience and that of my wife ran out that I insisted he make an appointment for me to see a gastro specialist who in turn did a CT scan, colonoscopy and then an endoscopy as he was sure that there were metastases around from the carcinoid cancer in 2000: Every test was negative for cancer and this is why I purchased Dr. Rogers book which has been a revelation and certainly opened my eyes to the nonsense and dangers of acid blockers.

I was on them for 15 years. I now have Vitamin D and B12 deficiencies. I’ve gotten sicker and sicker since I went on them and I have been off since Jan 2012. I started Vitamin D3 3 weeks ago and B12 shots last week after blood tests revealed the deficiencies. Almost all my joint pain and fatigue is gone. I went to see a Naturopath who suggested I go wheat-free for five weeks, then challenge it (eat some wheat and see if I get sick.) She also put me on powdered DGL which I am to mix with a couple teaspoons of ACV before every meal (you mix both of them into water and drink it.)
The DGL powder has L-glutamine in it, which she says heals the lining of the gut. I have been doing this the last 7 days and I haven’t had any heartburn at all except for a little bit when I over ate one night and chewable calcium antacid took care of it. She says she heals people all the time with this mixture. I feel better than I have in 13 years.

I would say yes that depression is certainly a part of coming off Prilosec or Omeprazole. I was put on Omeprazole in 2000 after carcinoid cancer. The side effects over the 12 years were awful so I cut back 6 months ago from 20 mg daily to 10mg every two or three days and since 15 days I have stopped taking them altogether after having had an endoscopy done which showed my stomach to be in excellent condition.
Two weeks have now passed and I have had indigestion usually in the night, some reflux and last night a sleepless one with depression which I hope is quickly going to pass.
For those of us who have had to take these acid blockers, I can recommend two books to read.
Safer Solutions to Gastric Distress, Natural Alternatives to Nexium, Maalox, Tagamet, Prilosec and other acid blockers by Martie Whittekin, CCN
NO More Heratburn by Sherry A. Rogers, MD.
Just to end up, both the doctor who did the endoscopy, it was he who found the carcinoid tumor in 2000 and my own family doctor who issued the Omeprazole have no suggestions as to the implications of long term use of these acid blockers.

I hope this helps someone. I have been taking omeprazole for several years (about 4 I suppose) to help my consistent and very painful acid reflux. Knowing how bad these types of medications can be for us long term, I tried all kinds of things recommended online to help cure acid reflux. I tried DGL, papaya enzymes, different digestive enzymes, ACV, “Heartburn Free” orange peal extract, “Acid-Ease”, eating almonds, celery, blah blah blah blah blah. Nothing helped to the point where I experienced long lasting relief.
I noticed something though… every time I went on a vacation, my reflux would all but disappear. I was told this could have been because of stress, but I knew that was bologna because my job is not stressful. So, I finally realized what it was that was causing the issue…. Frozen and canned foods. Maybe its the preservatives, maybe its the ridiculous amounts of added sodium, I don’t know. All I know is that I eat of lot of homestyle PREPARED meals on vacation that I generally do not eat while not on vacation. Also while not on vacation, I barely ever ate breakfast, and would have morning reflux, even after having Ginger tea and other remedies of that nature.
The “cure” was simply to eat a nice full breakfast (eggs, a biscuit, maybe some hashbrowns – whatever), and nice full lunch, and a nice full dinner. The quantity of the meal does not matter in my case. I can gorge myself silly and not get reflux when I eat full meals consistently. When I do feel a little reflux coming on, I just know it is time to eat and it goes away after eating.
To sum up what worked for me to get off omeprazole after being on it for years:
Even though it is significantly more expensive, don’t eat frozen tv dinner types of meals. even the really delicious ones like pf chang’s. none!
Try and stay away from canned foods as well that are loaded with preservatives, ie: the cheap cans of ravioli, etc. make your food or go buy pre-prepared meals.
When you feel reflux coming on….. eat. if you can avoid it, don’t drink with your meal. Drink about 20 minutes after your meal.
Don’t drink carbonated sodas. Just drink water only to start out until you start feeling some relief, then maybe you can have some light teas or something.
Some “george’s aloe vera juice” is a good investment. You can use this as a water replacement. It tastes just like water and will help a little bit with mild reflux symptoms. It is not a cure all, but it helps.
I have been off of Omeprazole for over a month now with no intention of going back. As a side note, I experienced some minor to moderate stomach pain for a few weeks after stopping, to the point where even drinking water caused my stomach to hurt. This has since gone away and has not returned several weeks later.

Thank you everyone for posting all this information. I’m currently at half dosage on my lansoprazole. I’m taking papaya enzymes, eating a very low carb diet and drinking yogurt that has probiotics. I’m also able to consume kimchi (a high probiotic food) regularly. Coupled with teas, things have gotten better.
As I reduce the medicine, it’s been rough, especially since I had to switch from nexium to lansoprazole, but aside from my stomach getting upset sometimes, I really feel better. I still have the odd feeling on the left side of body, but it disappears more often than it used too.

The posture is vital. It definitely helps to keep the shoulders back and the diaphragm area open.
It’s been a month since I posted my story and I have tried a bunch of things but I have really had to scale back how much I eat. I used to eat once cup of Irish oatmeal with a couple tablespoons of ground flaxmeal and one tablespoon of pure maple syrup for breakfast, but I find that gives me heartburn now. However, half that amount does not.
I eat my “largest” meal prior to 5pm and then have a small amount of soup or some nuts four hours before I go to bed. I have to say, I am eating half again how much I was eating when I last posted that I was eating half of what I ate on the Omeprazole. I’ve gone mostly vegan and I never thought I would say this but- I love what I am eating. However, I am still having trouble at night. No matter what I do, I have heartburn at night. Sometimes chest pain. I now understand why people sometimes go to the ER with chest pain when it is acid reflux (yes I had my heart checked.)
So I am just trying to eat less at a time and find pleasure in other things. Food was my life- not bags of chips and twinkies- but I was a real foodie and the loss of wine really hurts (I just can’t do it anymore. It really screws up my stomach. Even just on special occasions.) I just found decaf green tea that is decent so I am going to make that and ice it and have that instead of wine. The food part- you can really get gourmet with vegan. Dairy is already sort of disgusting to me and I find myself avoiding it. When I do have it, it’s pretty obvious it upsets my stomach even with Lactaid.
I think I am definitely at what is normal for me now, vs on the Omeprazole. Now I have to see if I can eat less food and go as vegan as possible and I am taking digestive enzymes and probiotics. I haven’t tried the aloe vera juice. Maybe I should try that.

I have been on omeprazole for nearly 8 years. I dint really question it when I was younger. Until I started getting bloated feelings in my right side about 4 years ago. then I started to question my health. Took me until 4 days ago to stop taking the omerazol. As every time I tried before the heart burn would come back twice as bad. Over the last year I have become more aware that I am not the person I used to me I am more nervous than before a lot less out going and always concerned with my health. I have found doctors to be dismissive of my worries and sometimes felt they were very patronizing.
We live in a society where we are made to think doctors know best (at least that’s how I’ve always thought) but if they know best why have the not tried to help me get better they have time and time again written prescriptions for me but even after asking I have never been referred to a chiropractor for my bad back or a dietitian about a low acid diet.
All I have found out is from the internet and other sufferers of acid re-flux. When you tell a doctor you have been on the internet I’m sure it turns them in to patronizing robots. I’ve been told a lot by doctors not to believe everything I read on the web.
I’m not stupid I don’t believe everything but I do believe omeprazole can be bad for you.
I am on day 4 without omeprazole I’ve been eating only low acidic low fat food (here’s a good list of foods to eat and not to eat) http://heartburn.about.com/cs/dietfood/a/heartburnfoods2.htm lots of apples bananas and almond. I’ve had aloe vera juice and licorice and so far the heart burn is mild. My stomach has been hurting a bit but I have been trying hard to make my posture better so I cant say if it’s the extra acid in my stomach or the muscles starting to work better but I am very hopeful that I wont need to go back to omeprazole or any drug like it.
It’s been great to read I’m not alone in the challenge of freeing myself from the clutches of omeprazole.

I’m on day 9 of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) instead of my Omeprazole. I cannot begin to tell you how amazed I am at how I feel. I have been “sick” almost every day for the last five years and even before that, I had started gaining weight and feeling terrible. I’ve been on Omeprazole since 1995! That is when my weight gain started, now that I think of it. I have lost five pounds and one inch around my middle since I started the ACV last week. The bloating I used to suffer daily is gone completely. I have more energy, my mood is improved (imagine that- improved mood resulting from not feeling sick all the time.)
I DO still have acid reflux. But nothing like I had while I was on Omeprazole- some nights I’d wake with a mouth full of acid and cough for 2 hours. I had developed a cough from the reflux, according to my doc, and that is almost gone now. I take a rolaids or tums when I have reflux and I have been taking an average of 2-3 per day. Once after every meal. And the heartburn GOES AWAY almost instantly.
I started out with 2 tablespoons of ACV and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda 3x a day and it became clear pretty quickly that this was too much. I went down to 1 tablespoon and 1/8 or less of baking soda twice a day. I add a little Stevia to sweeten, add some pureed fruit drink (like Odwalla or Naked Juice- the mango is especially good) and top it off with some water. I seem to have some orthostatic hypotension in the evenings now (when you stand up and you feel dizzy) but I always had low blood pressure and I know I read that ACV lowers blood pressure. But I feel amazing. Just amazing. I am ready to go off my depression meds soon (with my doctor’s approval and assistance!) because I am sure that I will not need them any more due to feeling so much better physically.
The best side effect is I am no longer hungry every single second of the day. I used to eat, and then an hour later I’d be so hungry and I’d feel upset and shaky until I ate again. I was eating 7+ times a day. I felt so bad about myself and I got so fat. I felt like there was some sort of blood sugar issue but the doctors wouldn’t listen to me. Now I am eating 3 times a day, much less than I used to, and I have a small snack a couple of hours before bed. OVERNIGHT this happened. It’s truly amazing.

I am just coming off only 14 days of Omniprazole because I have heard so much of the side effects– and after day 5 of coming off it, my stomach feels so inflamed and of course, the stomach acid is back in a big way. I wanted to share however what has worked in the past for me — Definitely anyone with this issue should take digestive enzymes — and eat PAPAYA! Yes, fresh PAPAYA is the best kept stomach acid secret – you need the kind from Mexico for the best results- make sure its ripe and eat it as much as you can each day — nothing has helped cool down the inflammation and reflux like papaya — of course that is why you see ‘papaya enzymes’ —
Good luck- its not easy having this —

I’ve just stopped it this week after many years, as initially I was prescribed it because I was taking a NSAID. I recently stopped the NSAID as it was causing all kinds of side-effects. However, this last two days I have certainly been aware I’m not taking Omeprazole any longer, and like others am so bloated. I’ve decided I’ll take it every other day, then try twice a week to see if I get off it that way. I had no idea there would be an issue with stopping it, especially as I have only been taking it to protect my stomach.

Ive been on Omeprozole for 11 months and I am suffering from insomnia and other neurological issues due to vitamin and mineral deficiencies because of this drug, I have started weening myself off this drug with the knowledge that the heartburn will return, but I think this drug is causing me a lot of harm. I am alternating between omeprazole and zantac and supplementing this with oatmeal and apples in the morn 1hr after taking meds lets hope this works.

Omeprazole is not intended to be used long term. My father has been on it 15 years and I now believe it is the culprit behind his chronic nerve pain. Long term use of PPI’s can cause B12 deficiencies which can cause nerve damage. You are not supposed to suppress your stomach acid. It is needed for healthy digestion.
PPIs can cause us to encounter nutritional deficiencies due to undigested foods, inflammation of the gut, nerve damage from lack of b12 amongst other withdrawal symptoms from trying to stop. Wean off slowly or switch to Zantac and do every other day for a while.
While you are tapering use digestive enzymes with each meal and every snack. Start on a good daily probiotic like sustanex or culturelle. Ease inflammation with fish oil. My father is currently taking the digestive enzymes, probiotic and is temporarily on prednisone for gut inflammation (his bloodwork showed inflammation). When he tried cold turkey his reflux got unbearable. Just taper off and start with the enzymes and probiotics.

Just wanted to update my husband’s status…
He is currently feeling much better. We’re still not sure what exactly happened. He stopped taking omeprazole completely (we’re still thinking him going cold turkey is what caused his problems, in addition to taking it over a long period of time) and has been taking charcoal caplets as well as natural digestive enzymes (you can find these items at any Vitamin Shoppe or GNC). THAT is what is working for him, in addition to smaller meals and documenting what causes any indigestion or pain. He does get a bit of heartburn from time to time but nothing that would require taking omeprazole ever again.
While he is feeling much better, he will still be having both procedures done this week and next. It’s best to be safe and know if there are any serious problems. I’m still amazed that after all his complaints and all the doctors he’s seen that not one (except his current GI) ever suggested any of these types of natural, over-the-counter herbal remedies.
Moral: always double-check any pill or procedure your doctor is trying to talk you into. There is information out there, you just have to be diligent in finding it.

Yes, finally after a long and careful process have stopped it all together. Now occasional Zantac or Tums for a while, and being careful of diet choices, small meals, etc. Lots of folks have written in with ideas that have worked for them, too, with success stories.

I came across this quite by accident and pray it helps with your heartburn as well. I was taking a nightly Tablespoon of Lecithin Granules (health food and vitamin stores carry) as a nutritional supplement. Mind you, these are the nutty tasting granules not the capsules, which may work too but haven’t tried. One particular evening I had a bad case of heartburn, which much to my surprise, disappeared on contact upon swallowing the lecithin. I haven’t seen this remedy anywhere else and this has become my family’s go to cure that works every time. Hope it helps!

One of the important functions of stomach acid is to make proteins digestible. If the proteins in your diet are not getting the acid treatment, they may not be absorbed properly. Since our nails need protein as a building block, there may be nail abnormalities due to the protein shortage.
There are other nutrients that need the acid, also. I suspect that long-term use of PPIs does more harm than good. When the medicine first became popular, I wasn’t needing it but I highly suspected that the loss of stomach acid was detrimental to digestion. Anyone who studied even Physiology 101 would know this. So I can’t believe that the medical profession would turn a blind eye to this for long-term use. Tums are a different story, because they don’t interfere with the natural functioning of the stomach. They are like just eating something.
Big Pharma wants to sell stuff, Doctors jump on the latest things without much thought, Patients are just sheeple. However, I can empathize with doctors who have to explain things to patients who don’t have a grasp of basic physiology. I once had to explain something to my grandmother, and she never got it.

RE: acid reflux. The problem may not be “too much acid.” it could be the esophageal sphincter has lost tone. I had reflux as part of larger, autoimmune, condition, both of which (the autoimmune disease and the reflux) were fixed by acupuncture. No drugs at all. It took two years, but that was 11 years ago, and I’ve not had a relapse.

We’ve searched online and there are some cases of people who when through painful withdrawals upon stopping omeprazole. While I cannot find a definite timeline for taking omeprazole, I am noticing that this is not a drug one should be on long term. Plus my husband didn’t have acid reflux or GERD, he had more like intestinal/abdominal issues so we’re really not sure why he was put on omeprazole in the first place. I did find a site online about the side-effects of omeprazole and one of the complaints was abdominal bloating. The funny thing was that while the article states that the drug is the cause of all the excess bloating, continued use would decrease it. How does that make any sense?

Thankfully, my husband found a relief from all the bloating – charcoal caplets. His GI suggested it and it has definitely made an improvement, more so than Gas-X or any other over the counter gas medication. He is scheduled for his procedures over the next 2 weeks so let’s hope all goes well.

My suggestions: read all you can find on line (but don’t believe everything you find, be sure to check facts where you can be sure they are reliable, and ask your physician any questions as well). What you described didn’t sound like my experience in stopping Prilosec, but of course, everyone is different. From your description, I would ask my physician about the possibility of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) as well as research it on line myself. The more you learn, the more you can ask questions that will help to find an answer. Hope you are successful, and your husband is feeling better soon. Your new GI doctor sounds like he is willing to take the steps to help you find answers.

I have been taking Omeprazole for a few months. I notice my fingernails and toenails are cracking and becoming brittle. Could this be a side effect of Omeprazole? Have other readers noticed brittle nails after taking Omeprazole?

My husband has had stomach problems for years. He had a hernia about 5 years back, which led to an operation and a “patch”. About 3 years ago, he began feeling pains on his right side. He would feel bloated. His doctor prescribed omeprazole, even though he didn’t really seem to have heartburn. After numerous trips to the doctor and complaints of stomach pains, it was determined to be his gallbladder.
He had a golf-ball sized stone and his gallbladder was infected. 2 years ago, his gallbladder was removed. We thought that would be the end of it. His side felt tender but was told that his body needed time to recover from the trauma of surgery. He continued to have pain, bloating and irregular bowel movements. He stopped taking omeprazole due to reading online as to the various side effects. Plus, he believed that he wasn’t really suffering from heartburn at all so why take it?
For the past couple of weeks, he’s been horribly bloated, unable to release any gas and in pain. This made it harder for him to eat, as he was so bloated and “feeling full”. When he did manage to eat small bits of food, he felt immense pressure on this chest and thought he was having a heart attack. He would try to burp but would end up vomiting his food up into his mouth, barely digested. If the food did manage to stay down, he became even more bloated and his insides felt like they were ripping apart.
It was if his entire digestive system had slowed to a crawl. It got so bad he didn’t eat for 3 days straight. Presently, my husband has a new GI and is going for both an endoscopy and colonoscopy. He went to the hospital yesterday (per his doctor b/c the pain got so bad) and after urine and blood work (plus an ultrasound), they found nothing. My husband is so frustrated, especially when 1 doctor suggested it might be all in his head. We are hoping either the endoscopy or the colonoscopy will show something.
    My questions are this:
    * how long should 1 be on omeprazole for? I’ve seen up to 14 days. I know my husband has been on it longer than that.
    * if a person doesn’t have heartburn and takes omeprazole, are they doing long term damage? My husband pondered that perhaps the reason why he couldn’t properly digest his food was b/c he had neutralized all his stomach acid when it wasn’t necessary.
    * does anyone have any information on gas entrapment syndrome? I can’t find anything really reliable
    * based on my description above, any thoughts to what his problem might be? Perhaps due to his sudden stoppage of omeprazole? Any insight anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

Twenty-five years ago the nurse-midwife I was seeing suggested red delicious apples for heartburn. It worked for me then and they still work as an immediate relief for mild to moderate heartburn. It only takes about 1/4 of a small apple, including the skin. I would love to know if it works for others.

I was on prilosec for a while then switched to zantac, then to pepcid. I prepared for getting off of all these GERD meds ( have had GERD for 35 yrs) by buying Aloe vera juice and keeping a bottle of tums everywhere. The first 2 weeks without any GERD medication were not great, but I started taking the aloe vera juice 2 oz 3-4 times a day, keeping some at work also for the bad times.
At the end of 2 weeks, no more heartburn. I do have a hiatal hernia which will cause reflux when I am working in the garden. I take tums when needed for that. If I drink hot tea, sometimes that gives me heartburn so I use the natural products of DGL, aloe vera juice, or the tums. It has been several months now and I really feel great. Hope the aloe vera juice works for others.

I too have taken PPIs for years and worry about taking them. I seem to remember that when they first appeared on the market, patients were cautioned to only take them for a limited time. When I asked my gastroenterologist about this, he denied that such information was ever given. Two years ago, I devoted and entire summer to getting off Prilosec, by taking Ranitodine, vinegar and honey, meditating on the assumption that my heartburn was caused by stress (not very likely), etc., etc., but nothing worked, so I am still taking my daily dose of PPIs.
Can you tell me, since my physician won’t, and I don’t trust the information coming with the drug, what the possible long term side effects are?
    Many thanks, Lisa D.

I, too, experienced significant rebound when trying to wean myself from Prevacid. My solution has taken about a year but, so far, has worked for me. First, buy a bag of empty capsules. Then, open the 30mg Prevacid and reduce the amount slightly by pouring into an empty capsule. Stay on that reduced amount for several weeks, then reduce the amount slightly more. When I reduced the amount to below 2mg a day, I was able to stop the medication all together. Now I only need an occasional tums for minor discomfort. So far so good!

I recently successfully weaned myself off of Nexium. Over a 30-day period, each night I would carefully open the capsule, pour out some of the little white beads, tightly close the capsule back, and then take the pill. I started with just a little poured out and did more and more each day until by the last few days there was very little left in the capsule.
It still took my tummy a couple of weeks after that to adjust, and I did have a few unpleasant but manageable bouts of heartburn. DGL before meals was very helpful, and I took famotadine (Pepcid AC) as needed. Digestive enzymes also came in handy. I’m now two months free of Nexium. I still use famotadine for occasional flare-ups.

I can share my personal experience, after many, many years of Prilosec–and wishing like others, to stop it as I began researching the risks of long-term use, as well as the question of whether or not it was really necessary–or the symptoms the dreaded “rebound.”
My plan was to very, very slowly decrease the Prilosec, so I started by taking it every other day, and did this for a month–taking “Tums” for what symptoms I had, then, the second month, every 3rd day, etc. I am about ready to stop it altogether–and take over the counter Zantac for any symptoms, or OTC Tums.
The worst “rebound” symptoms were month one, but manageable with this regime. Small meals, staying away from “triggers” like very spicy food, chocolate, coffee after the breakfast cup, fatty foods (especially at dinner time). Use caution bending over after eating, don’t eat late in evening, no tight clothing, raise head of bed. The comments here on PP were very, very helpful–a number of folks wrote and shared their experiences–as well as the published information that I wrote to PP and purchased. I also need to lose some weight, as I am plump: this I haven’t tackled seriously yet, but will.

Try eating apples. I had the same problem with prevacid, left it off completely, started eating an apple instead and it took about a week & half but my heartburn is gone for good! the Doc doesn’t buy it but it worked for me. I use Fugi apples.

I have been trying for years; I have written here a few times and discussed the things I have tried, all in vain. I get rebound acid, which is like (especially when tummy is empty) my belly filling up with frothy, foamy acid; it fills my belly and then crawls up my esophagus; I have tried taking every other day; ha! tried so many things; this last attempt was in Dec of last year; went to my Dr and him that my Gall Bladder Surgery DR said to get off the PPI’s!!!!!
So, my Dr. Rx’d me a honkingly huge 300 mg tablet of ranitadine; he warned me of the possibility that I had BETTER EASE myself off prilosec and maybe start with half of each and then go to ranitadine…… I thought, piece of cake, after all it IS a 300 mg tablet; outta work with out the tapering; WRONG.
By the next evening, I was bent double. Back to 1/4 tab of ranitadine at bedtime and 1/2 prilosec in mornings. Barely works; time passes……
I am now to where I use my pill splitter and take a prilosec and half it, then slice the pieces to where I have four teeny pieces; I take one each morning on an empty stomach; I can not skip any days, but at least I only take 1/4 a prilosec daily.
