Quinine is bitter. Once you have tasted it you will not forget the taste of quinine. It gives tonic water a distinctive flavor. People who love gin and tonic savor the unique bite of this drink, especially if you throw in a lime or lemon wedge. Quinine also has medicinal properties. Just a few decades ago, you could buy quinine pills over the counter in most pharmacies under brand names like Legatrin, Quinamm and Q-vel.
The FDA banned the use of OTC quinine to treat leg cramps in 1994. Although this drug has been available for centuries, the FDA determined that it was far too dangerous to use for anything but malaria. See this link for more information on the ban. In its infinite wisdom, however, the Food and Drug Administration did not ban quinine from tonic water.
Quinine Dangers:
The trouble is that some people are extremely sensitive to quinine’s toxic effects. This drug can cause headache, rash, ringing in the ears, nausea, dizziness and blurred vision.
Deadly Reactions:
The most serious reactions are rare but can be deadly (StatPearls, Aug. 3, 2021). In some cases, quinine disrupts the rhythm of the heart.
In addition, it can trigger blood disorders that can lead to hemorrhage. A review a few years ago turned up 142 patients with acute immune-mediated reactions (American Journal of Hematology, May 2016). They experienced chills, fever, dangerously low blood pressure and a range of very serious vascular problems. Ninety percent of them had to be hospitalized for severe illness. While almost three-fourths had taken quinine pills, about 20 percent had consumed quinine-containing beverages. Three of these patients died.
It’s important for people who sense they may be vulnerable to quinine to avoid it in both pills and tonic water. Here are some symptoms that could be a tipoff to trouble.
High-tone Hearing Loss:
According to a report in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (June 1990):
“Quinine reduced high tone auditory acuity in all patients, resulting in flattening of the audiograms. The effect was rapid in onset, usually unnoticed (although tinnitus was reported in seven patients), and resolved completely after treatment was completed.”
Gastrointestinal Symptoms:
The symptoms that someone is experiencing quinine toxicity include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort and/or diarrhea.
Other Symptoms:
Anyone who experiences dark urine, bleeding gums, a nasty headache, nosebleeds, chills, signs of jaundice (yellowing of the skin and/or eyes), breathing problems, chills or fever should contact a physician immediately or go to an emergency department.
Quinine Reactions Can Be Deadly:
Another report covered a case series of 19 patients who reacted badly to quinine (American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Nov. 2017). One person died before treatment; 17 required renal dialysis. Despite this treatment, 8 of these people died. A serious quinine reaction can be deadly.
We also worry about pregnant people taking quinine. Although they appear to suffer leg or muscle cramps more often, quinine could disrupt the development of the fetus (BMJ Clinical Evidence, May 13, 2015).
FDA Banned Quinine:
With that context, it’s easier to understand why the FDA ordered drug companies to stop selling quinine for anything but malaria in 2007. Only one product was allowed. Qualaquin could be prescribed by physicians, but the cost is high for such an old drug. Thirty Qualaquin pills could cost over $200. That could make sense for a drug to treat malaria, which is rare in the US. Generic quinine runs between $30 to $60 for 30 pills.
Any physician who prescribes Qualaquin for leg cramps could risk the wrath of the FDA.
On July 8, 2010, the agency issued the following warning.
“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today warned that the unapproved use of the malaria drug Qualaquin (quinine sulfate) to treat night time leg cramps has resulted in serious side effects and prompted the manufacturer to develop a risk management plan aimed at educating health care professionals and patients about the potential risks.
“Qualaquin is not FDA-approved to treat or prevent night time leg cramps.
“A review of reports submitted to the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) between April 2005 and Oct. 1, 2008, found 38 U.S. cases of serious side effects associated with the use of quinine, the active drug in Qualaquin.
“Quinine use resulted in serious and life-threatening reactions in 24 cases, including low level of platelets in the blood (thrombocytopenia), and hemolytic uremic syndrome/thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, a blood disorder that results in clots in small blood vessels around the body that can be accompanied by kidney impairment.
“In some patients, these side effects resulted in permanent kidney impairment and hospitalization. Two patients died. Most of those reporting serious side effects took the drug to prevent or treat leg cramps or restless leg syndrome.”
What About Tonic Water?
Clearly, quinine can be dangerous for some individuals, but the FDA has not banned quinine from tonic water. To do so would make the FDA a laughing stock. It would also aggravate millions of people who like gin and tonic…or just plain tonic. It is an acquired taste, but some people really like it. It’s also possible that the FDA doesn’t consider tonic water a danger to public health.
Because of this loophole, many people have discovered that drinking tonic water might help prevent muscle cramps.
One reader related her experience:
“I suffered with nightly leg cramps until one magic day on the Greek island Santorini. I had gone on tour as a guest singer of the New York Choral Society. One free afternoon, a group of us went to a black sand beach where I swam. The only other member of the group who also swam was a New York trauma surgeon. I developed a cramp and was trying to walk it out when he told me about Schweppes tonic, which contains a very small amount of quinine.
“I couldn’t find any tonic on Santorini or in Athens, but as soon as I returned home I started drinking a large glass (diet, with cranberry) every night. It has worked for me for several years, but I definitely know if I skip a dose!
“I asked a pharmacist friend to search the literature to see if anything else contains a small amount of quinine. She couldn’t find anything and told me the dangers of using high-dose quinine. I have checked with my doctors and have heard nothing against my practice of drinking Schweppes.”
Tonic contains 83 mg. of quinine in a liter. An eight-ounce glass of tonic would only have about 20 mg of quinine, considerably less than the dose that used to be prescribed by doctors for leg cramps (200 to 300 mg).
Does Tonic Water Work for Muscle Cramps?
Despite the low dose, however, many readers maintain that it works:
“My doctor recommended tonic water for nocturnal leg cramps. It works every time very quickly. In less than five minutes I get relief and can go back to sleep. I suffer NO pains if I drink half a glass before I go to bed.”
Carmel in New York reports:
“I had horrible cramps in my legs. I have been drinking several glasses of tonic water for the past 3 or 4 weeks and surprisingly the cramping has subsided. At least now I can sleep the night. It’s not too bad tasting with lime.”
Mariza in Los Angeles shares this experience:
“I too used to have such intense legs cramps leaving me writhing in pain. They could occur daily, day or night. I couldn’t even flex my leg muscles. I learned to deal with it by drinking a glass of tonic water, but only after the pain had already started.”
Even Tonic Water Has Some Hazards:
Some people find even the small amount of quinine in tonic water can pose problems. These folks may experience ringing in the ears, rash, itching or blurred vision and should steer clear of tonic water altogether.
There are those who are so sensitive that even a little bit of quinine could prove life threatening.
“Quinine in tonic water proved almost fatal for me. Nighttime leg cramps have been an ongoing problem, so I bought a bottle of tonic water.
“On Saturday I had a 5-ounce glass before supper. Sunday morning by 9 am I was in the emergency room with a frightening skin reaction. I was hospitalized for many days and diagnosed with a dangerous blood disorder called idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). My hematologist said it was triggered by the quinine water.”
We have also heard from people who developed tinnitus after drinking tonic:
“I have just developed a hissing sound in my ears. The onset was very rapid! The doctor diagnosed it as tinnitus, but would give me no reason for the problem. He said there wasn’t anything I could do. I’ve noticed some days it is less disturbing than others but some nights it awakens me because it has become so loud.
“I was drinking large quantities of tonic water, which contains quinine, when this started. Do you have any suggestions to help me?”
The quinine in tonic water is the likely culprit. Ringing or hissing in the ears can be a complication of quinine. Stop drinking tonic water altogether if you detect tinnitus.
What About Buying Quinine from Canada?
Over the last two decades we have heard from many people who are upset that they can no longer buy quinine. Many say that this drug is the only thing that works for leg cramps. One reader reported that there wasn’t enough quinine in tonic water to do the job. He discovered that he could buy quinine from Canadian pharmacies. Here is a link to that article with some additional insights on the pros and cons of quinine.
What Else Can You Do for Leg Cramps?
For people who cannot tolerate or stand the taste of tonic water, there are alternatives. The FDA has approved no medications for easing leg cramps. That means most doctors have very little to offer patients in pain.
Judy in Issaquah, Washington, did get some intriguing advice from her doctor:
“I was prescribed quinine tablets 5 years ago for my leg cramps. I had to get them from a Canadian pharmacy and they worked wonders. However, one should not take this drug forever and my doctor didn’t want to renew the prescription.
“When I ran out of pills, I immediately starting having leg cramps again. Some nights I would have as many as 10. Horrible, horrible.
“Then another doctor suggested putting Irish Spring hand soap under my bottom sheet. It works wonders. The only problem is that after about 5 days, I might get a tiny little cramp and I know it is time to shave the soap bar. I prefer this to taking more pills like the quinine or magnesium (which did not ever work for me).”
TRP Channels and Leg Cramps:
We were fascinated to read that a physician would recommend soap under the bottom sheet to prevent leg cramps. Most health professionals scoff at this home remedy. We have received numerous comments that this must be a placebo effect. That’s because these people have not considered a possible mechanism. We have explained how soap might work to prevent leg cramps in this article.
Thanks to a Nobel prize winner (Rod MacKinnon, MD) and his neurobiologist colleague Bruce Bean, PhD, we now have an explanation for how things like a spoonful of mustard could make muscle cramps go away within a couple of minutes.
It all has to do with stimulating sensory nerves in the mouth, throat and stomach. The science of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels that explains how these remedies work has only been developed over the last couple of decades. However, it probably explains why mustard, quinine and pickle juice are so effective at relieving muscle cramps promptly.

When a leg cramp hits, I take one heaping teaspoon of yellow mustard – in most cases it works in less than a minute. This is very effective but requires limping to the refrigerator, unless you “take” the little packets from a restaurant and keep them on the nightstand. Another very effective option recommended by my primary physician is 200 mg Magnesium before bedtime.

One summer my go-to beverage was diet tonic water. I’d drink it all day (no alcohol). Towards the end of the summer a routine blood test showed my liver values to be literally off the charts, like end-stage liver cancer, the doc said. I was fine, however. While discussing this with my doc I remembered years earlier that a similar erratic blood test had prompted another doc to ask what had I eaten or drunk the night before my blood was drawn. When I answered “a gin and tonic”, she had said, “Oh, that’s okay then.”
This time around I quit tonic water for life. After a month the liver values were going down. After 3 months they were still elevated, so my doc asked me whether I had any other peculiar eating habits. I did: I had gotten the habit of chomping cinnamon sticks all day. He did some research, and I quit cinnamon for life. After another month liver was normal. Conclusion: apparently some people have a genetic pre-disposition to not be able to tolerate quinine or grapefruit, and apparently cinnamon has a powerful adverse effect on the liver too.

I used to get leg cramps most every night. I found that when I get them, I would take a 6 to 8 ounce glass of Pedialyte or other brand, and in less than 60 seconds later the cramp would be gone. Later I found that taking 25 mg of zinc at night the cramping would rarely occur. You can’t get 25 mg zinc supplement, so I cut the 50 mg in half. The cramping seems to occur at night after I have drank soda or beer. The CO2 seems to be the culprit.

When I have a leg cramp at night, I rub the area with Ted’s Pain Cream. The cramp disappears.
Check this cream out! It was developed by 2 scientists at the University of Texas, Dallas and can be purchased online.

I think the reason that there are so many potential treatments (Irish Spring soap, mustard, tonic water, etc.) for leg cramps is simply because there are so many causes for cramping. None of these treatments works for me. What DOES work are four simple things: (1) staying hydrated. I drink a lot of water each day and that helps tremendously. (2) regular self-massaging of my calfs. I often use a cream that contains Arnica. (3) reducing alcohol. I now drink wine or a cocktail on weekends only, rather than a glass or two every night. (4) reducing stress. Despite following items 1 and 2, I would still have occasional excruciatingly painful cramps at night. Strangely, my leg cramps almost completely disappeared completely after a very stressful few years was overcome.

From the article: “Quinine in tonic water proved almost fatal for me. Nighttime leg cramps have been an ongoing problem, …” Took the words out of my mouth except I just got very sick so I wouldn’t use the term fatal.
I believe the tendency for nighttime leg cramps is genetic, and many things can help even if they are ultimately insufficient. Before (and sometimes after) exercise like jogging, I find that vigorously massaging the calves helps a lot but doesn’t work for cramps in the shins (can’t really massage a bone the same) which are just as bad.

I have had lifelong anemia and B12 issues, for unknown and in 2009 & 2016 know reasons: Ulcers. I have regular Hematology follow-ups and in April 2021, he said “NOW your platelets are low. If we can’t improve that, we need to do bone marrow tests.” I was scared and googled causes. I told him I love tonic water and had been drinking it like water (sans gin). He ordered me to stop the tonic water as it can cause lowered platelet counts in some people.

Quinine can also be a trigger for atrial fibrillation. My afib kicked in during restaurant meals and rarely at other times. I discovered after reading message boards that quinine is a common trigger for afib. Discontinuing gin and tonics made a big difference.

Years ago I used quinine capsules. Later on, tonic water and
soap or soap shavings more recently. Can’t get the capsules here but use any or all of the others and suggest you try them. Very effective.

For the past few years I have taken a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a tablespoon of honey in a cup of hot water or tea in the early evening. It prevents the painful night time leg cramps that I used to have.

A heaping quarter teaspoon of cream of tartar dissolved in a little orange juice or water gave me relief from leg cramps. Cream of tartar is high in potassium. I drink it any time during the day. Find cream of tartar in spice section of grocery.

I used to drink tonic water for leg cramps but I stopped when I learned about its negative health effects. The cramps came back until I started taking magnesium citrate (200 mg/day), which works really well for me. I follow Dr. Tieraona Low Dog’s advice and take it at bedtime.

My leg cramps were a symptom of my Lyme Disease. Once I was diagnosed and started treatment, my leg cramps stopped.

My question is, if a person has drunk quinine water in the past with no ill effect, is it safe to assume that quinine water will not be detrimental to that person every time they drink it? I am someone who likes quinine water. However, I don’t drink it often, or regularly. Should I feel safe in starting a regimen of quinine water on a regular basis? And should the quinine be taken only after a leg cramp begins? Or should it be taken as a preventative measure every night before bed?
Second question: I have developed severe leg cramps at night…or even in the day if I stretch out on the sofa. What is it about lying down that allows the cramping to start in the first place?
A physical therapist told me about the soap in bed remedy for leg cramps. If the leg cramps are not too severe, the soap remedy does work for me. (I use original fragrance name-brand gold soap, as that is what we use, in general.)
I currently rely on a liquid magnesium product. However, on those nights when the cramping is relieved by the presence of the soap, alone, it is a strange sensation. I can feel the cramp is still ‘happening’ but the pain is muted. If I didn’t experience this myself, I would not believe it. “Curiouser and curiouser.”
Lucy
Instead of wondering if quinine might be harmful, try yellow mustard. A spoonful of it kills my leg cramps before I can get back to my bedroom. I understand that pickle juice does the same for some people. Both are easy and very low risk. I now keep little mustard packets from a fast food restaurant on the bedside table.
Sarah
I would also caution against drinking quinine for those who are subject to blood sugar drops. I never had a problem with tonic water before, perhaps because it contains sugar, but a few years ago I had a “natural” commercially sold tonic water with stevia and had a severe reaction that I believe was a drop in blood sugar (sweating, very hungry, very ill-at ease). I think the combination of quinine and artificial sugar was what caused it. I looked up quinine, and it affects blood sugar, unbeknownst to me, as does artificial sugar.

I was working an unbelievably boring, repetitious data entry job. I started drinking a highly-caffeinated drink in the afternoons to keep from falling asleep. One night I had an extremely severe cramp in my calf. The muscle was so tight there was no curve to my lower leg; the leg was the same diameter from knee to ankle. It was agony.
It was then I learned mega doses of caffeine can cause cramps. I am grateful my physician was able to prescribe quinine. I took a quinine pill every day for a year. It took a whole year’s recovery before I could stop the medication.

Most of the tonic water sold in the U.S. has zero quinine, including Schweppes. But it does have massive amounts of sugar, including high fructose corn syrup. Love real quinine tonic. I drank tonic water overseas but the sugar water sold in the states as tonic water is awful. Same is true for ginger ale, sigh. Little ginger but massive amounts of sugar.

If Quinine is so dangerous, why does the FDA allow it to be in an uncontrolled, sold over the counter, with no warning label Tonic Water? Because people like the taste as suggested in the article seems like a ridiculous reason to me. A few years ago I complained about leg cramps at night and my kind doctor went to the store and bought me some Tonic Water with Quinine and said that his mother had used it for years. It was a miracle cure for me. I buy it in the small 8 oz bottles and at the first cramp when I jump out of bed, I drink a bottle of the Tonic and I can then go back to a peaceful sleep. If I am out of Tonic Water, I will have cramp after cramp. After jumping out of bed several times to stop the pain, my husband has run to the store in the middle of the night to buy more Tonic Water. I had a friend recommend magnesium supplements, so I tried it and it didn’t work for me.

My Doctor stopped me from taking Quinine which I used for horrendous leg cramps, sometime getting them in both my legs at the same time. I was always told one would have to drink so much Tonic Water with Quinine something that would be hard to do. The leg cramps were so painful and my Husband would try to relieve them for me. I would scream in pain and even said certain things that I would never think of saying or doing.
One day, I had about 20 or so Leg Cramps and I told him I will try the Canada Dry Tonic Water with Quinine. I drank about 10 – 12 ounces that night and no leg cramps the next day. I drink 10-12 ounces of this Tonic water during the day all at once not even taking a breath and gulp it down for the last 6 months or so and only have had 2 leg cramps one being June 13, 2018. So that day I drank a few ounces more. I hated drinking this tonic water as it is awful.
I decided to let it get to room temperature and sometimes I drink it all at dinner. So my advice is TRY IT – IT WORKS FOR ME and do it at ROOM TEMPERATURE. There are no words to describe how I feel not having those horrendous leg cramps and how happy my Husband is. BTW: They sell it in Diet!

Leg cramps can be painful if you are on a dialysis treatment. The best advice I can offer is to have someone massage the leg and have the technician administer saline into your blood flow. It will work but minutes always feel like hours.

Hello, I started drinking tonic water w/quinine about 10 months ago. I only drank tonic water. No water at all. So I would drink about 2 to 3 liters a day. I thought it was quenching my thirst and it was healthy. Little did i know that it was affecting my heart, my blood, and my kidneys. I had gone into the hospital twice with a-fib and they had to shock my heart back into normal heartbeat. Then i had to be put on heart medications.
Suddenly my kidneys were not doing well and my blood platelets were low. I figured it out when i went online and looked up quinine and the dangers. I have been creating my own health problems with ingesting large doses of quinine. I was also in the hospital 6 times in one week with severe nosebleeds that could not be stopped.
It all makes perfect sense now. Please do not drink tonic water with quinine as a beverage like I did. It can take your life and make you very very sick.

We buy a product that has been on the market for leg cramps: apple cider vinegar found at any health food or grocery store in the vitamin section. It works in seconds when rubbed into the skin. Will try it for restless leg syndrome. Mustard works well also.

I used to get leg cramps so severe that it literally made me scream. The cramps were either in the foot or calf. I once had it happen in my thigh. The cramps in my feet felt like it could break the bones in my toes. They even resulted in pain that lasted for several days in the affected area, like from a pulled muscle. I had read about plain yellow mustard and pickle juice. I tried a healthy squirt of mustard not expecting any relief. I couldn’t believe complete relief in just a couple of minutes. A couple of minutes is actually a VERY long time when you’re enduring a cramp.
I’ve since taken a preventive dose whenever I get any pre-cramp symptoms with great success. I once got a particularly bad attack and had a shot of mustard that I washed down with pickle juice. It was amazing. The attacks don’t reoccur that night. And in general the attacks have greatly dismissed. I still keep a few packets of yellow mustard on my nightstand. I can’t believe how something so simple has worked so well.

I too have suffered with severe leg cramps, mostly in the ham string of my thigh. They are so debilitating, I can’t stand, sit, or lie down. On the advice of my doctor, I mixed some tonic water with orange juice and used that for about 3 weeks. Suddenly, I couldn’t walk across a room without finding a chair to sit down. I was short of breath and felt such fatigue. Went to the doctor and he routinely drew blood. I was severely anemic with my hemaglobin at 6.5 . Had a blood transfusion and felt better. The dr. said I must be losing blood somewhere. Had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy. Both were normal. It took a year for my blood to get right again.
Here I am a year later and found some Hyland pills at the pharmacy. I read the label and there was no quinine. I even asked the pharmacist and she said no quinine in them. I began taking them for leg cramps three weeks ago. Same symptoms reappeared as before. Today I had to get a blood transfusion as my hemaglobin had dropped to 6.3 again. I googled the ingredients on the box of Hylands and sure enough, one ingredient was a different name for quinine. Everyone please be wary of taking quinine. I am super sensitive to it and will never ingest it again. I guess I will just live with the leg cramps or try some of the suggestions on this website

In recent years, at times, I had night time leg cramps and I know they are a symptom of some particular health problems, as well as how to cure them. But I have to make a little discourse to explain.
Throughout my life I have been diagnosed with low levels of iron and deficiency of vitamins like B12 or D, but no physician ever tried to go beyond treating a single symptom at a time. At almost 50 I discovered the cause of these problems as well as my persisting diarrhea-like symptoms: Though apparently it’s not a celiac disease I don’t tolerate well wheat and similar grains. Quite likely this is not caused by a specific protein, like gluten or better it’s gliadin fraction, but their unfavorable amino acid composition. Why? The symptoms disappeared within two or three days when I improved my protein supply, e.g. with protein shakes, and after some years have vanished almost completely.
From this experience, I developed a habit of daily taking iron, vitamin B complex, D, and magnesium supplements. But there are times when I forget about that over my workload, which also causes me to drink a cup of rather strong coffee in the morning, to wake up. If that continues for a couple of days I’m likely to experience night time leg cramps, which disappear as soon as I leave off the coffee and again take up my medication.

With all of the meds out there that the FDA approves that cause horrible side affects & are either recalled or facing class action lawsuits & they are worried about “some” people being sensitive to quinine? And instead of making it available in ONLY low doses for leg cramps they make it completely unavailable except in tonic water. Yeah, that makes sense….not.
I have fibromyalgia & lately I have been experiencing severe leg cramps. Baclofen has not relieved them completely but has helped with other fibromyalgia issues I was having. I have used organic cider vinegar (2 tsp. in 8 oz. water) & that did help at one point as did simply eating pickles or drinking the juice. My guess it is the vinegar in that that also helps. I have also tried a holistic OTC product. That also worked for a long while but is less effective recently. They also have a product for restless leg that works very well for me, my brother & my dad who all suffer from restless leg.
But back to the leg cramps, recently my dr. suggested tonic water, 1/2 cp. before bed so I will be trying that hoping it will be successful.

In the mornings when I stretched my legs to go the toilet, both calves and front shins got cramps, and I found it hard to rub. When it did ease off then both big toes also had cramps. Someone suggested Tonic water because it had the ingredient Quinine in it. Had a glass every evening with dash of orange squash. It did work for me but had to leave cap off through the day as I don’t like carbonated drinks normally ?

I used to be on quinine tables for horrendous leg cramps. They worked. Then my Cardio Doctor took me off of them and back to horrendous cramps. After having 20 leg cramps and in both legs sometimes at the same time, I tried the CANADA DRY TONIC WATER with QUININE.

I am 77 years old and developed severe leg cramps fairly often at night about 2 – 3 years ago. I started drinking more water and taking two Turmeric capsules a day which has helped to slow down the frequency of the cramps. My doctor also recommended trying tonic water, pickle juice or gatorade.
Then just about 2 weeks ago, I was discussing the cramps with some friends on face book and one of them said a sure cure is drink about a Tablespoon of straight “VINEGAR” when leg cramps occur. It is “awful” and sort of upsets my stomach, but the two times I have tried it, the leg cramps have stopped!
I will continue the turmeric capsules and try to stay hydrated to avoid these horrible cramps and use the vinegar if and when they develop. Most of my leg cramps are “not” charlie horses, but occur along the outside of my legs from my knees to my ankles.

My DOCTOR advised me (when I was wanting to not take so many pills for RLS) the drink DIET TONIC WATER and be sure it had the QUININE in it. To mask the bitter taste, she told me to put like lemon or lime slices (even a grape or a berry). I drank and drank it night and day non stop. It did NOT change the RLS problem. I began having horrible stomach churning like my stomach was turning over or doubling over and twisting in on itself. Then more lower intestinal problems like BOTH constipation AND diarrhea at the same time. Then wild dreams and being very tired – sleeping too much. I didn’t know what the causes were or are. So I just stopped taking the Diet Tonic Quinine water. There were 3-5 days of these symptoms continuing but gradually diminishing. Restless Leg Syndrome is just as on going and present as it ever was. ??

I will share my situation. I found this forum while trying to find how to make quinine for myself. I have been using Hylands and tonic water for years. They both helped but I did not use them every day. I talked to my MD several times. My cramps got worse. I would scream and scream, that is all I could do. One day I screamed so loud and long that I herniated my vocal chords. I could not make a sound and I could not move. I was swallowing blood.
While on vacation, my cramps got so bad that I bailed out of the van I was driving and was lying on my back in someones yard screaming in utter agony. My poor mother in law rubbed my legs for hours with Voltaren gel.
Upon returning home, I contacted a nearby compounding pharmacy. They have quinine with magnesium. I needed my doc to write a script, he did. I was amazed at the relief I got. I had never taken magnesium. Fearing not being able to always get the compound, I decided to try OTC Mg. Well, It makes me very sleepy and tears my guts up. I must eat before taking the Mg. It does work for the cramps.
I eventually realized that driving and sitting any time at all with my legs dangling brings on the cramps, as does any form of activity. I had to give up exercising in my pool, because it was too dangerous. I forced myself to become house bound most of the time.
I am now using Mag OX OTC and 10 meq Potassium, Rx. We just did the worlds longest yard sale, some leg discomfort. Drank my powerade, took the Mg and K. I buy several 1 liter bottles of Tonic water every trip to the grocery store. I refuse to live without some form of quinine. I have my bottle of Hylands, a 1 lt bottle of Tonic water and a bottle of Gator Ade by my bed as I am typing this.
If anyone suffered the way I did and did not find help, they must be dead by now. My advise is stay hydrated. Find what works and stick with it.

I really enjoy drinking gin & tonic and tend to drink several at a time. I have changed to drinking tonic water with a slice of lime and a dash of diet sprite (zero). This satisfies my craving for gin & tonic and saves me a bundle. I use real limes or even bottled lime. The tonic water costs 67 cents for a liter and a bottle of Zero lasts many weeks.

I almost never experienced leg cramps until this year. The excruciating pain would propel me right out of bed and would have to be walked off before I could return. Also, I sit at a desk at work and sometimes experienced the same cramping when I absent-mindedly tucked my legs under my chair.
“Dr. Google” suggested a possible potassium deficiency or dehydration, but increasing my water intake and of foods containing potassium did little to fend off the attacks.
Then, while seeing my Primary Care Physician for a regular Wellness visit, I happened to mention the severe leg cramps. He tends toward a more holistic approach, when possible, and suggested I begin mixing Tonic water and juice before going to bed.
The relief was instantaneous! For the first time in a very long while, I was finally able to sleep through the night, go figure!
I experience none of the noticeable side effects mentioned on the web and have to confess, I am a little anxious about some of the more severe side effects, but I cannot imagine going back to the unbearable pain and sleepless nights!
Tonic water is cheap enough, so for now, I’ll continue using it and keep an eye out for the side effects. (One nice benefit of Tonic water’s bitter taste: no one else in the house will touch it!)

Tonic water was the culprit of my platelets dropping to a severe low of 7000 when the avg person has 150k-300k…had i not developed bruising all of a sudden to make me seek medical attention, i would have never known how much danger my body was in, i was at risk of bleeding to death had i gotten cut. It took the emergency room a few hours to figure out it was the quinine in the tonic water that i consumed daily was the cause. It should be banned in every form or at the very least have a warning on the bittle like alcohol does and cigarettes so you are aware of its potential dangers. As soon as i stoppind drinking the tonic my platelets started shooting right back up and still are continuing to rise…thank God.

I had two small bottles of quinine tonic, and now my ears are ringing continually. The FDA should have made these losers put a warning label on their drink if they are going to sell to the public. This is ridiculous. What the hell good is the FDA if they are not honest with the public?

Quinine in tonic water also prevents or relieves restless legs syndrome. I always order a gin and tonic on a plane trip of 3 hours or more, when I am likely to get RLS. It works perfectly and also makes the flight more relaxing.

I work at a health food store. I have many customers, as well as my husband, who have taken magnesium/calcium supplements for leg cramps: 1,000 mg of ea. once a day and the cramps have stopped very quickly. A glass of Emergen-C works well also….immediately. Best to do both preventatively to not have to endure the pain. These cures also work for dehydration caused leg cramps especially in older people.

I’m one of those people who like tonic water by itself. But I had to cut it out entirely after it was discovered my liver enzymes were off the chart (literally!). The doc was really concerned but I remembered decades ago hearing that a G&T the night before a blood panel could give some false positives. Since I’m otherwise in perfect health, I was able to convince doc to let me quit tonic and re-test a month later. The liver enzymes were going back to normal. So no more tonic water for me.

I have Myasthenia Gravis, a neuromuscular disease. Quinine is ABSOLUTELY contraindicated. However, I also have Fibromyalgia which can cause severe muscle cramping. I have found that taking a teaspoon of yellow mustard works wonders for the muscle cramps. It’s almost like a miracle how quickly the muscle cramps are relieved. I highly recommend it.

“blood disorder called idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). My hematologist said it was triggered by the quinine water.”
If it was diagnosed as ‘idiopathic’…how would your hematologist know the cause or the trigger?
It’s like saying that because you drank a glass of wine it was the trigger that caused cirrhosis of your liver.
One must be careful of these terms.

I use regular tonic for occasional leg cramps. I keep a single serving bottle in the refrigerator, take a swallow or two as needed and the cramp stops in seconds. I tried the routine without the swallow of tonic and the cramp persisted. So it seems to be that tiny amount of quinine that does the trick. i have type two diabetes and a sip or two doesn’t make a difference. I don’t use sugar substitutes.

I have Restless Leg Syndrome plus Proctalgia Fujax (extremely anguishing rectal spasms).
Did not want to deal with side effects of prescription meds for the RLS. Have been taking magnesium for the RLS which has done away with them. I take enough magnesium until I reach a level which works for me. I take the magnesium at night before bedtime.
Now the only time I get hit with Proctalgia Fujax is when extremely exhausted.

I get leg cramps at night if I don’t thoroughly stretch my hamstrings and other leg muscles everyday (when they are warmed up). There’s even an exercise for stretching the ligaments that cause shin splints. I exercise everyday and makes sure to stretch when finished otherwise I will get cramps at night.

Twelve or fourteen ozs. of tonic water is too much to drink before going to bed, or at any time I think. I drink about 4 oz. with an oz. or less of Gordon’s gin. Sometimes I add a few ground juniper berries. Some people add a little honey.
I figure this covers muscle cramps and arthritis pain. And I sleep well!
Don’t overdo anything!!! Use common sense.

Isn’t banning quinine because a few people have a toxic reaction akin to banning peanuts because a few people have a toxic reaction? Or banning all flashing warning lights because a few people get seizures?
You can’t ban everything that has a beneficial effect because a small segment of the population reacts badly.

I have been following conversations regarding nightly leg cramps for awhile now as I recently was having a problem with them to the degree I dreaded going to bed at night.
Over the past 8 months or so, I have intentionally been drinking – at minimum- half of my body weight in ounces of water daily. Rather than coffee in the am, I now start my day with a 16oz glass of water to get me underway. Then throughout the day, this is the only liquid I consume – water. Since I have been on this regimen, I have not experienced any more nights being awaken by leg cramps. Not sure if there is anything to this or not but it seems to be working for me. Just thought I would share…..

Absolutely agree Bob! I have to wonder if there is definitely more to banning quinine than the given reason. Maybe keeping it from people helps feed the medical and big pharma industry from people looking for other solutions. Easier to control people distracted with debilitating cramps. If it was as simple as explained then shouldn’t many drugs, food additives and products made for human consumption be banned?

I had an Arterial Study and a Venous Duplex sonogram today and found out that circulation is perfect. My potassium is fine, so the doctor told me to drink tonic water which contained a small amount of quinine. I am reading this article and the side effects coincide with my daughter’s who never had a drink of tonic water. However, she has ringing in the ears, rash, itching or blurred vision, so it is probably a coincidence that some one had some of those same symptoms the day they drunk a glass of tonic. They took the quinine pills out of the drug stores, per doctor quote “they were no making enough money and was not profitable”.

My son was involved in sports. So when I was complaining of serious muscle cramps especially inside the thighs so that I couldn’t even walk he suggested dill pickle juice. It has worked well for me. Trouble is, it can leave the pickles low on juice! I have tried just plain vinegar but it doesn’t work nearly as well.

I thought i would add my piece to this conversation. I have a condition where my muscles have very low reserve energy. This condition causes me to cramp when i have expended all the stored energy. I’ve had a muscle biopsy and every test available to determine the underlying cause without positive results. Finally i got an appointment to the MAYO clinic. The point! My doctor suggested i try TONIC WATER W/ quinine to relieve the cramping.

My legs really ached so I had about 12 ounces of straight tonic water last night. Five minutes later I thought I was going to vomit. I resisted the urge to throw up then felt like I was dying! Seriously, I felt that bad. I fell asleep on the sofa at 6:30pm woke up at 8:00pm and crawled to bed. I woke at 2 and again at 4 when I decided to take allergy medicine. I will NEVER touch anything with QUININE in it again. After reading online about the serious side effects it can cause it should be banned in drinks.

Cramps could be an indication of Magnesium deficiency. Try Mg tablets instead of Tonic, might be a healthier option.

My husband has advanced bladder cancer. He sometime loses a bit of blood in his urine. His doctors want him to drink lots of liquids. Recently,he started asking for tonic water with lime and ice. I was happy to see him drinking and refilled his glass any time he asked. After a few glasses, there was a dramatic increase in the bleeding from his bladder. He developed clots with urinary blockage and received treatment in an emergency room. I just happened to read somewhere that quinine interferes with platelet function and can contribute to bleeding. This must be the case, because when he stopped drinking the tonic water, the bleeding slowed and his urine returned to near normal.

Jim: To certain people quinine is a deadly poison! It should NEVER be included in any food or food product of any type without CLEAR warning that quinine is present!!
My wife’s last encounter with it (June 6,2016) nearly killed her: Emergency Room personnel did not think she would survive! The source of the quinine was either a bowl of soup or a cup of fountain coke, her meal 45 to 60 minutes before admission to the emergency room.
The effect of the quinine was more than half an hour of violent vomiting.

I drink Tonic Water because I REALLY like it. I don’t have leg cramps and the only time in my life where I’ve ever had them was 20+ years ago, so I’m drinking it because I like it.
I see the side effects listed… ringing in ears, rash, etc. I don’t seem to have any issues of any kind like that. So, I guess I’m just lucky with respect to that situation since I really dig the taste of it.
So barring the side effects listed, is there anything else that’s not listed? Like is it really fattening, or does it decrease the absorption of sugars in your liver? I try to avoid things like guarna and taurine, (sp on both) which probably is not the same thing, but they have odd side effects also that relate to digestion and such. (At least I’ve heard this before).
Anyway, if anyone knows any other side effects that are not listed like the ones I have there with respect to calories and such, I’d love to know!
Thanks everyone!

If you have ringing in your ears, any balance issues, or loss of hearing you have what it called Menierres Syndrome.
I have had this disease or syndrome since the age of 19. And I never drank any Quinine or Tonic water.
I ask all of you to see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist when you can. Preferable at. Teaching Hospital where you will hVe the Chiefs of Staff and their residence to diagnose your cause.
I was diagnosed by the best Chief of Staff at Ny Presbyterian Hospital years ago and was a case study to determine this ailment.
It was NOT caused by Quinine, so any City or State who jumped to that conclusion and banned quinine should go back to medical school .

I have RLS & I can’t tell you how bad it feels, especially at night or even worse at a work meeting or the movies! I finally decided to do something about it when I had planned an overseas trip & dreading the plane flight. My doc prescribed sifrol & oh my god! Relief at last! Sleep at last! I was a new woman & it’s been working well for a year now – 1/2 a tablet usually does it with the occasional full tablet. I’m trying tonic water for the first time & hoping for good things. I checked out whether to purchase diet or not & I decided to choose the sugar over the diet because of the carcergenic sweeteners. I would be interested to find another quinine product that will also help. If there is such a produ c t available. I’m not ususlly a soft drink person but will give it a go for now.

I have occasional spells of arrhythmia with elevated blood pressure that no one seems to want to address. (two MD’s told me that everyone has irregular heartbeats). During one of these “spells”…I remembered reading about Tonic Water being used for irregular heartbeats as well as for Malaria. The last three times I had arrhythmia, I drank about 4-6 oz of diet tonic water. This small amount stopped the irregular beats within 3 minutes. This is a safer option in my opinion than BetaBlockers.

I also suffer from RLS and MS. I Have been taking Gabapentine and Ropinerole for a number of years for symptoms associated with both illnesses, so when I read that tonic water and specifically quinine could help with the RLS I thought I should give it a try. I perchased a 2 LITER bottle, drank 6 oz that afternoon before a much needed nap. Wrong! For the next 3 days the RLS was horrible, as bad as it was before I started on the Ropinerole, it was as if it counter acted the effectiveness of the Ropinerole. I truly believe in ” natural alternatives “, but not in this case .

As a 25 year+ sufferer of peripheral neuropathy and RLS, the combination of both had a marked effect on my everyday life, whether it be the nightly cramps and the subsequent lack of QUALITY sleep that caused so many other issues. Enter Tonic water 3 weeks ago and even allowing for the sugar content, I am a convert.
My quality of sleep has improved remarkably which has had such a great effect on the way I function throughout the day.
I have not taken any prescribed drugs for over 10 years now as I simply don’t trust them, especially to the side effects that kept getting “covered up” or no explanation given. If I have to deal with a little extra sugar in my life with Toni Water then I’ll reduce it other ways. (Forget artificial sweetners in Diet Tonic, their worse)
God knows how though as I don’t drink soft drinks or eat commercially prepared foods or fruit juices, sauces etc.
The benefits of even the quality of sleep I now get far outway the previous daily sufferings I endured.

I’ve been suffering a couple times a year with a severe rash/breakout in around mouth and “man parts”. Dr. Said it was a yeast infection. I kept getting them, even though I was eating right, really right. To the point I was drinking lemons with Tonic Water…. and I kept getting these horrible outbreaks.
THE ONLY connection I could make is a couple times it started at dinner parties… I noticed the last time I started having “ants in my pants” was at a party where the host gave me a tall Vodka Tonic. Looking back I remember a gin and tonic at another event where “ants in my pants” started. Well I was at a party last Saturday, hostess had a Vodka cranberry carbonated cocktail…. “ants in pants and mouth sores”… Called hostess and asked what the carbonated component … it was TONIC WATER!!! I have just recently heard of this remedy for leg cramps. I have always drank pickle juice for cramping it works just fine. I do drink a little tonic water and it seems to have some good properties. Have always liked Quinine in Diet Tonic. Easy to find, lots of grocery stores have their own store brand in 1 liter bottles for under a buck, ie K-Mart, Acme, Giant Eagle.
But am now an old woman with heart issues and it’s occurred to me that Quinine might not be so good considering the other meds I take. I usually mix 4oz Diet Tonic Water with 4 oz of Cranberry juice, or OJ. I think, after reading some remarks online, that I will ask my Cardiac Doc if Quinine is OK for me because I take blood thinner and statin meds. I will be upset if he says to stop, because I really love this stuff.

I suffer from Charlie horse like pains in my ankles legs and feet at night, my husband heard about tonic water with quinine – I drink a small bottle each night and it is very rare I have the severe pains in my feet and legs. I also have Depression and Anxiety and am on Medication, this morning I feel a little bit more jittery, any suggestions???? My Gran has been drinking tonic water to help with leg cramps she’d get at night, per the suggestion of a family member. Tonight she was having some after after her foot was cramping in bed. She commented on how quickly it worked, after just a few ouncesounces, & said she wondered why it did. Curious myself I googled it & was amazed at what I found! She’s 83, has been using it as a natural remedy for years, & swears by it. I understand the risks of side effects & know what to look out for, but I think I’ll try it for myself. I work in construction as a framer in the hot desert climate of Phoenix, AZ. I read comments about it also helping with back pain so I’m curious if it’ll help with my back pain & occasional muscle spasmsspasms/cramps. I’ll try to remember to follow up with the results. Thanks for sharing everyone, whether it helps out not I learned something new today!

I have had severe cramps for years. I used to take prescription Quinine until the FDA changed it’s uses.
After finally giving in and going to the doctor last week she ran a lot of tests. She told me to drink 2 glasses of tonic water with added lime slices everyday. I’m happy to report I’ve been cramp free since that day! And I really like the taste of my concoction.
I have also been taking magnesium oxide for years to help relax the tight muscles.

You might try magnesium malate – I’m a bariatric patient (with night leg cramps), and the malate absorbs better. If you live in England or anywhere else they sell Schweppes, try the Bitter Lemon. I love that stuff, especially in the summer. I stumbled upon my remedy for lower back pain. I got half way through a glass of gin & tonic and immediately felt better.
I had assumed it was the gin.
I tried other alcoholic drinks with no benefit.
Then during a conversion with a strange they informed me it was the quinine, not the gin.
Absolutely true.
I have not seen any comments about tonic water relieving back pain, but if you suffer, try it.

I have had unbearable leg cramps since I was 10 and RLS for the last four years. I take calcium, magnesium, potassium but yet no relief. I have been asking my Doctors at Kaiser and my current health care provider. Absolutely no one cares. I go for days and nights with no sleep. Today its three days with no sleep. I’ve had Restless Leg Syndrome for about 10 years. Most people don’t understand what torture it is. At first my doctor put me on Requip, but the side effects were serious. Every afternoon I would start taking the Requip, and within 1/2 hour I would be groggy and unable to function for the rest of the evening. Then another doctor put me on Mirapex. I tried one dose and my neck started swelling up and my joints started hurting. I was on the job site so they dosed me with Benadryl and took me to the ER. Was told that I was allergic to it.

My neurologist prescribes garapentin for the restless legs. It does wonders. I am taking 3 -300 mg capsules a day. One in the morning because I’d sometimes get RLS during the day and two in the evening. The maximum that can be taken a day is 9, so I have a ways to go. I also started taking iron supplements at the same time an my energy level is now beyond belief. By the way, I am 71 and have had RLS for decades.

I was at my eye doctor last week for my annual check up and mentioned that I was experiencing a slight “fluttering” in both my eyelids. She said that quinine water might help reduce the fluttering. I bought a bottle on the way home and had a glass that night. The flutter seemed to leave BUT I noticed that my tinnitus was elevated. This morning I decided to resaerch quinine and have discovered that tinnitus is one of the side effects of quinine water. My tinnitus had been a low level (easily ignored) but is now VERY present. I hope that it will return to its low, tollerable low level soon. I wish I had not tried the quinine treatment for my eye flutter.

About 10 years ago I started having symptoms of RLS. My legs needed to move. Occasionally they would jerk for no apparent reason. I had to get up several time at night just to walk until my legs calmed down. I began to understand why RLS could drive people to be come alcoholics or commit suicide. My doctor first prescribed Requip, but the side effects would make me groggy and unable to function for the rest of the evening. Then a doctor switched me to Mirapex. It’s a miracle for me. Quick relief with no side effects. I am near the maximum dosage so I just hoping that it doesn’t get worse.
I’ve never used it, I just read a note from another person who claims that relief was excellent with Gabapentin.

this is my first time drinking this tonic water, not too bad tasting, but only one glass, I do not have the leg cramps, mine is more like a crawling feeling, hate it so bad, feeling fed up! Also can’t sleep with this problem, living on 3 hrs a night

That sounds more like Restless Leg Syndrome – entirely different. Google that because there are some things that might help. Good Luck!

What you are describing sounds like Restless Legs Syndrome. I have Sensory Polyneuropathy (disease of the nerves in the feet) and RLS. I really believe that they are one in the same in my case. Your doctor can put you on medication to help. Even with my medication, I still sometimes have symptoms and have to take an extra pill. It’s funny, but my RLS was not bad until I was put on Ropinirole. I experienced an immediate augmentation (increase) of my symptoms (sometimes this happens with this drug, according to what I read) and now have to take the medication every evening. It sounds like your symptoms are already bad, and you need some help so that you can get some sleep!

Hi. I suffered with some pretty bad leg cramps- the kind that cause you to give up on sleep and then the pain and soreness continues long after the attack and through to the next attack. I also had RLS and took some med for it but not anymore. I’ve tried a lot of remedies but the one that works best for me and has several great healthy side effects, one of which is improving arthritis symptoms, is coconut water. Coconut water has huge hydration properties and balances electrolytes- magnesium, potassium, sodium etc- also has calcium and a few nice phytonutrients; helps skin, memory and mood. As for cramps, coconut water is great but you have to drink one about each day- 12 oz. or more. In a pinch you can add a dash of quinine water. Try it. It may work for you too!

I was suffering from Rsl for over 6 years,at night it’s the worst, during the day and even going to the movies it was shocking .I am 66yrs old. I was on Sifrol pills for so long, and took 2 pills 2 hrs before bed mmmmm .But last weekend I started looking on the Webb and came across someone that’s using the tonic ,now 6 days ago I am off my pills and drinking a 3/4 glass of Schweppes Diet Indian Tonic just before I sleep….what a find ,what a gem….I sleep like a baby,no more restless legs at night nor during the day…..I even had pain down my leg in front ,that’s gone too….my hubby is happy ,I am happy and a HUGE thanks to Schweppes for putting some Quinine in the tonic…..if you know of anyone that has RSL tell them to give it a go …..loving my legs now.

Taking 450 mg of a high quality magnesium citrate not only stopped my leg cramps but also has the added benefits of (making you very relaxed, eases sore muscles from post workout, great sleep and softens and moistens bowel movements) also it has very low toxicity. Magnesium is often lacking in a lot of the soil in North America so even if you eat really healthy bio regional organic produce there is a high chance your Mag levels are still no where near optimal.

Scared using it, but it does work for me. I recently got the most horrible foot, calf and thigh cramps as a side effect of a cortisone shot in my knee. (Apparently, from online forums, this is not uncommon if you have Fibromyalgia, though the doctors I spoke to were clueless.) They were unbearable, and not only kept me up all night soaking them in hot water, but made me feel like I’d been beaten and left for dead for a few days after.
I drank 2 bottles of tonic water and took 525mg potassium and magnesium and B-complex supplements. The cramps were gone the next day. They came back weaker a few days later when I stopped the treatment- disappeared again when I restarted, though I lessened the amount to 2 glasses of tonic. Soap and other remedies did nothing to help. The tonic and minerals does work. I wish they made tonic water without sugar or sugar substitutes. It tastes terrible anyway so what’s the point of sweeteners. Tolerable mixed with lime, OJ and vodka.

Do you happen to get leg cramps if you drink wine? I get terrible leg cramps inside my leg if I drink wine. I did some google searches and found out it was the sulfites in the wine. I then had a cortisone shot in my shoulder and almost immediately got cramps in my feet and legs. Did more research and found out some or most cortisone shots have sulfites for a preservative. I finally found an organic wine with no traceable amount of sulfites. Drank it 4 nights in a row and no leg cramps at all. Don’t know if one can find a cortisone shot with no sulfites.

I took Quinine for several years for leg cramps, but then they became prescription only. I took them by prescription but the price had gone from about $5 for 100 to $35 for a month supply by prescription. Then the pharmaceutical companies did studies on it and it is now $5 per pill.
I got them by Rx from a pharmacy in Canada for about $40 for 100, but now they have gone up. Mine are so bad that I hate to go to bed knowing that if I move they will start up. I even get them around my ribs and back. Today my hands cramped so bad I could hardly comb my hair. I will get quinine water which I have used in the past. Also will put a bar of soap in my bed. I ordered some stuff from the Amish that is apple cider vinegar, garlic juice, and ginger juice. It works a little, but cannot afford to do that. May try making my own. Salt under my tongue helps and will see if I can find celtic salt?? No one understands how horrid this can be unless they have been through it. So nice to see people who understand. I also use some essential oil cream. Any port in the storm huh guys?

Jpni,
I am in total sympathy with your problems with cramps. And I agree with you–people who haven’t experienced this have no idea how painful it is. I suffered for years from horrible leg cramps at night several times a week, and not only at night, but sometimes during the day. I got cramps in my hands when I was driving, and even had them in my tongue! They would go on and on, for as long as 40 minutes. Excruciating. I took potassium and magnesium supplements but they didn’t help. I took quinine, at first by prescription from my local drugstore, then purchased from Canada after it was banned in the U.S., but I worried about having to take so much so frequently. When I moved to another town, my new doctor recommended that I try Mag-Tab SR, which is magnesium L-lactate dihydrate, available online from Niche Pharmaceuticals. The recommended dosage is one pill (84 mg), but I took 3 in the evening, and sometimes as many as 5 (my doctor was fine with that dosage). They absolutely work! I highly recommend them to anyone who suffers from this terrible affliction.

I have severe RLS and heard of drinking tonic water for relief. I have tried it for the last 4 days and much to my surprise it is helping a bit. I am concerned about what the side effects may be and how much is too much to drink each day. Any feedback would be great.

I have suffered from RLS for a few years and it seems to be getting worse. My doctor prescribed Pexola, it’s a Parkinson’s medication. They don’t know why it works but it does. However, l need to time it perfectly as it takes a while to work and only helps for a short time.
I’m going to try the tonic water, as it might suit my situation better.

FIRST OF ALL – QUININE SULPHATE IS DANGEROUS – the FDA researched 93 deaths conclusively occurring through long-term usage.
I, myself, now have Tinnitus, Kidney Damage and Congestive Heart Failure after taking 500mg per night for nocturnal leg cramps for eight years. Specialist here thinks that the kidney damage was caused by the Quinine.
My leg cramps are so painful and damaging that I fell unconscious during one attack (having had slightly less painful attacks previously) fell face forward onto a chair and did not come to for some five hours.
After coming off Quinine I have taken Magnesium, Magnesium Citrate and another Mag (cannot remember) with pretty good results until I had to take
Lasix (water tab) for my CHF. I was also on Simvastatin at the time and the effect caused the most painful cramp in BOTH legs (hips down to toes) such that I became sick, had stomach trouble and became semi- conscious. I was totally paralysed for two hours. The attack had torn both calf and thigh muscles in my left leg and I was unable to walk properly for nearly a month.
Yet still I will not return to Quinine. For some very bad attacks I have found table salt to halt the process and, if lucky, bring the muscles back to their relaxed (normal) state. I have not tried the soap or mustard remedies – the mustard for me would be rather distasteful for me as I have hated it for over 60 years.
As you can understand I go to bed each night fearful of the next attack especially as I have to take Lasix as and when required – tonight it will be an unwrapped bar of Cussons Imperial Leather between the sheets – wish me luck.

I was warned about quinine so have not used it for many years. I just tried the soap, for finger and hand cramps and by gosh, it worked! I begin having seriously painful craps in legs, thighs, etc. several years ago. I decided that over-the-counter sedatives might be the culprit. I stopped all of that, got a mild prescription drug, and the cramps stopped – most of the time. Now, they seem to be related to several things: I cannot drink red wine, or eat red grapes – I will suffer severe cramps throughout the night. A little beer is ok. I stay away from alcohol almost entirely now. Using my hands, driving for long distances, standing on a cold floor for a long time will also bring on the cramps also. I focus on staying hydrated, but sometimes fall short. I will probably stock a bottle of Tonic Water – to have on hand just in case. Enjoyed all the comments.

Ruth,
First, read the info on this site: spacedoc.com. Lots of info about statins and their unpublicised side effects. Also – lasix and its effect on electrolyte balance – sodium and potassium losses in particular. I consume plenty of salt and take 600mg potassium gluconate each day – no cramps. If I take docs advice and reduce salt, the cramps come back – same day. Both sodium and potassium always in correct range in blood work. I will not take ANY statin ever again after personal experiences. Check out that site.

A few decades ago (really), I used to frequent the bars after work. My drink of choice–vodka tonic. My ears rang (tinnitus) all the time. After I stopped drinking all that tonic water (and vodka) in the bars, the tinnitus resolved. I didn’t connect the dots until many years later when reading about the side effects of quinine to treat malaria. Keep in mind, though, that I drank a lot of tonic water. I doubt there would be side effects with small amounts, but if you develop tinnitus, it may be an indication that you should reduce your consumption.

I also suffer from RLS & cramps some nights. Someone told me about Quinine water and I had a hard time drinking it. But added that little squirt of that water flavoring called “Mio”. that did the trick.

Tonic water is the ONLY way I have found to releave the killer cramps that I get on infrequent occasions. It works almost instantly. I do not drink the tonic water to prevent cramps because they occur randomly.

I’ve been suffering with horrible, excruciating leg cramps. Nothing much seems to work and if they get too bad I end up in a tub of hot water. On a recent visit to the doctor she has suggested the tonic water w/quinine. I had a cramp last night and I drank 12oz of tonic water. I can’t really say if it helped because the cramp did not go away right away; however, I’m going to give it a try for 6 nights (6pack) and see if it helps to prevent. At this point I’m willing to try just about anything because I suffer so bad. I don’t wish this on anyone, but to know I’m not suffering alone helps to ease my mind.
People’s Pharmacy response: The quinine in tonic water can act as a preventive. For quick relief, try a sip of pickle juice or swallowing a teaspoon of yellow mustard:

For years I’ve been drinking lime juice daily which has prevented leg/foot cramps up to now, but lately I’ve had a few cramps again. After reading these comments I will try tonic water plus lime – hopefully the double whammy will work!

I too use Tonic water for occasional leg cramps. But, I discovered it is good for stomach cramps related to the flu or other viruses. Two years ago there was an intestinal virus making it’s way through the family and in-laws. Some had cramps so bad the doctor phoned in pain meds for them.
I remembered the Tonic water and asked my husband if he would bring me a glass. Well, he did and on ice. I sipped the water and had only two very mild stomach cramps. That was it. I think this flu season I will try an ice tray with frozen Tonic water in it for ice chips for a sick stomach and see how that works.
I would like to see how this works for menstrual cramps as well. Fortunately my daughter doesn’t have cramps and I’m passed that stage in life.

I was told about quinine in tonic water by a friend last week after suffering very bad cramp in my calf, which left my calf permanently painful. The pain disappeared almost immediately after drinking a couple of glasses of tonic water.

I began having leg cramps at night after having peripheral neuropathy. I mentioned it to a friend and he gave me an eight ounce bottle of tonic water telling me it will relieve the cramps quickly. That night I had a bad cramp and took two sips, within a minute the cramp stopped. Toward morning had another cramp, took another sip of tonic water, like magic, cramp gone almost instantly.
Now I hear it will interfere with my thyroid medicine and cause other problems. Does anyone know how many people drink gin and tonic as their favorite drink? I know several and nothing bad has come of it. I will continue to take a sip or two if I have leg cramps and doubt that little will interfere with my thyroid medicine.
I would think that the FDA would remove quinine from shelves and some other govt agency would ban it from being added to tonic water were it really dangerous. Of course I am saying this hoping I am right since leg cramps are the most painful thing I have ever endured.

No wonder I feel better after drinking tonic water and after a week I’m so refreshed and clean. However, quinine tastes awful, raccoon *beep* really. :/ The first time I drank the tonic water that stated it had quinine I felt like I was drinking the green NyQuil. :P My face surely contorted with disgust. I know use an acai water flavoring to cancel-out that medicine bitter (bitter can’t described how awful this tastes). I know that quinine is good for me because after drinking the 12 oz bottle I don’t get the leg issues I always suffer from (retained fluids, inflammation/swelling, cramps, sleepiness, numb feel). The leg issues that causes for concerns are no more… thank goodness. I feared I would have to go under the knife and out up my legs to relieve the pressure from the inflammations and trapped fluids. Anyways hold my taste buds and nose, down the hatchet it does, one nasty quinine tonic water will definitely keep the surgeons away.

Hi Joy, I am currently being investigated for unexplained Syncope (Fainting) I am not on any other medication i.e. statins and the only change in my diet in the past 6 months has been drinking Tonic Water on a daily basis. You mentioned you have had experience of fainting, how did you diagnose the cause as being the Quinine? Thanking you in advance

I recently have been having leg cramps and my doctor suggested to try tonic water and the very first glass I drank immediately brought relieve to the pain on both my legs. Taking a glass just before bed helps you to have a peaceful sleep also.

What your friends really need are electrolytes. The easiest way is adding celtic salt (which will be grey in color) to the water they drink. And not to become dehydrated.
Paul the Roman
actually my experience with RLS also found relief from a glass of tonic water. Depending on how severe the attack is I can usually damp down the RLS feeling by having a tumbler full of quinine water.
Tryptophan also used to be effective but as you may know this harmless amino acid is no longer available due to the misguided diligence of the FDA which banned it after a scare caused by a contaminated batch made its way to health food shops.
I believe that the FDA practice of banning certain natural compounds in spite of their obvious therapeutic benefit is a direct result of influence by corporate pharmaceutical companies, which after all practically run the FDA, in order to eliminate competition in the OTC market. So much for America’s free and open market place, eh?

What you guys/gals want is a nice Dubonnet and gin (the Queen’s favourite drink). Or, y’know, just the Dubonnet if you want less fun and just to get rid of cramping. Dubonnet was invented as a way to get French soldiers to take quinine in amounts that are enough to protect against malaria but not dangerous.

Tonic water works and so does apple cider vinegar and pedialyte. I was getting severe leg cramps on the outside of my calf and in the back of the calf. I was drinking about 60 oz or more of water a day but didn’t feel hydrated. I looked into this online and found I was probably not getting electrolytes. All of the things I mentioned work as well as lemon or lime in water. I also take a multivitamin, magnesium and calcium. Leg cramps are at bay as long as I follow these guidelines.

You keep mentioning quinine for leg CRAMPS, but when i searched on google, it
was not for leg cramps that I was looking for but rather RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME. they are not the same thing and no where do you mention whether this will also help for RLS.

I drink a great deal of quinine water every day. i much prefer it to seltzer. I do not drink alcohol at all so I have to drink something I enjoy.
It does take care of RLS. So … drinking it is my risk behavior of choice. We all have chances to pick our poison. I have made one of mine.
No side effects yet.
So there you have it.

I recently started getting leg cramps from over working my legs doing all day yard work. My friend told me drinking a glass of milk helps. It did as milk has potassium. I also was advised by Medical to drink Tonic with Quinine so I bought Tonic Water with Lime by Polar and it has Quinine in very small amount. It worked too preventing leg cramps after I felt them coming on. I now do stretching daily. I also take Magnesium supplement that helps. Eveyone is different. I also pray asking the Lord to help me in the name of Jesus. The Bible Quote, Jesus said if you ask the Father anything in my name he will give it to you according to his will. He gives us wisdom.

I am 68 years young and a avid motorcycle rider. For about 9 to 10 years I have sufferd from body cramps meaning fingers, legs, feet, shins, when they hit it is like being struck with a ball bat and when riding a motorcycle one can’t always stop to care for the cramp. I have seen 4 different Doctors on this cramp thing no one has said any thing about quinine, it wasn’t until I was taking to group of friends when one said to take quinine, well to day I went to a Doctors appointment with a new Dr. an when I mention quinine she said try it and see and to night I ran into your site and found out I’m not crazy and other people suffer with body cramps also. Great site and thanks to the people who have left comments.

I have a mild allergy to quinine but enjoy a bit of tonic water from time to time–went on your site to read more about side effects. I was surprised to read about the leg cramp issue. I have taken magnesium supplements for years for leg cramps–why is this not better known??
Just go buy a bottle of Magnesium (Malate is best) at the health food store; or Potassium/Magnesium/Zinc combos are also available–but straight Magnesium does the trick. Run don’t walk to find yourself a copy of THE “bible” by Adele Davis called “Let’s Get Well.” This book has saved my life–I’ve had it for 45 years. Google it or find it on Amazon. Thanks for letting me leave a comment here. Best regards.

I switched to potato vodka and tonic as my libation of choice when diagnosed with Celiacs. For a while all was fine but then I began having a debilitating and painful itch all over my body. Over a year later and after spending hundreds on allergy testing and medications, I think you may have diagnosed my problem. I am, as of today, off that tasty Schwepps tonic. If the quinine has been my problem I will be eternally grateful. Stay tuned for my update.

I suffer extreme leg cramps, painful beyond screaming. I drink Schweppes tonic water; not slimline; and eat bananas; a couple of tumblers of tonic and 2 bananas a day stops them just about completely. If I miss either the cramps reappear within a day or two. (I am 68)
This works for me but reading previous comments it seems quite personal but I would seriously recommend trying the combination. (hope this helps you fellow sufferers)

I have restless leg syndrome for some time, I take requip, it helps. I’m also a diabetic, feet and legs hurt always almost unbearable. I use to get leg cramps to where my leg muscles tie into knots. I also have cirrhosis of the liver. My doctor, a liver specialist, told me to drink diet tonic water that the quinine would help my pain and cramps, unfortunately it has not. My question is if it’s safe with my health problems? I take other meds. for liver, prostate, etc. and can’t take muscle or pain meds. Is there any natural remedy? I don’t drink alcohol or mind altering stuff. I take zolpidem, helps to sleep! I am 65yrs of age.

I am a dialysis patient and suffer from leg cramps quite often while in treatment. I find that the only thing that helped was quinine. Now that it is not available, I have nothing else that works. If the quinine fails to work, a cloth dipped in water as hot as you can stand, draped over the leg muscle also is an instant cure for Charlie horse. I’m fortunate in that the quinine has no adverse effect on me, and my Dr still prescribes it.

My mother is 77 and just recently started drinking tonic water. She said she noticed that the leg pain from muscle cramps she’s suffered from for years, along with ankle pain noticeably improved since she started drinking tonic water every night—actually, the cramping and pain disappeared completely. She started drinking tonic with a splash of vodka since her husband passed away to help the anxiety and allow her to sleep. She’s tiny, and doesn’t drink enough vodka to get a fly drunk, lol, but she didn’t know anything about the use of quinine for muscle cramps, so the placebo effect wouldn’t be a factor.

I have been diagnosed with severe leg cramps a year ago, however I do not have a prescription plan to pay for the heavy duty narcotics that the doctor put me on. I started using Hylands leg cramp pills a year ago taking two pills twice a day, and have had no issues what so ever. I didn’t know that the quinine was taken out of the leg cramp pills until two nights ago I awoke in screaming agony and both of my legs were in spasm from my hips to my toes, I could not breathe through the pain hyperventilated and passed out. I cant believe they don’t realize how much this NATURAL remedy is needed for people like me. I went to the pharmacy today and of course you can only get it now with a prescription.

I am 64 years old and have suffered with leg cramps all my life. When I was much younger I could buy quinine in any drug store for $3.99 a bottle. I was concerned about the side effects but discovered tonic water. I have taken a glass of this every other night and my leg cramps are no more. If I don’t do this they are back within two weeks.
Anyone who has never had these cramps do not understand the pain, which in my case, lasts for two days. I have been told by Dr,s that I need magnesium. I have been there, done that….it does not work for me. If the F.D.A. ever bans the small amount of quinine in tonic water…I will go out and buy every bottle I can find and store it in my cellar!

I suspect that it is the water that does the trick and not the quinine. Try drinking just the water. I have read before somewhere that leg cramps is a sign of a lack of water in your body. Isn’t that interesting! I believe it. I have tried it. Give it a good try.

I have been using tonic water for two years. I have gotten very good results from leg cramps. I have suffered from urinary infections for 8 to 10 years. I have not had any reoccurrence of urinary infections in the last 2 years since I started drinking four ounces of tonic water a day.

Dear oh dear, tonic with cranberry juice ??? Try it with gin!
Added benefit of the alcohol… I suffered from restless legs for years, now I have a gin and tonic in the evening and no more restless legs… I know that when I don’t have one it comes back.

tonic water with quinine is sold in most grocery store’s in the soda section

I also drink tonic water with quinine for my restless legs syndrome. I had to stop taking the medication I was taking for the problem because it turns out I am in a small percentage of people that get the side effects of swollen ankles and calves that are pink and warm to the touch. After my doctor took me off the medication, the swelling, pinkness and warmness went away.

Scweppes tonic water in glass bottles is available at several grocery stores. It’s sold in plastic bottles at Wal-Mart for a buck. I got hooked on the flavor of it with fresh lime. I was curious if there were any concerns about consuming the water. I discovered this site which answered my concerns.

Dear Paul 43:
I buy my tonic water at Wal-Mart (their brand). As far as I know, all tonic water contains Quinine.

I am 54 years old and I have suffered for more than 20 years with RLS. Early on the doctors prescribed Requip (a parkinson’s disease medication), which is expensive and which also had to be upped regularly until I was taking fairly large doses. I now have gone off the Requip altogether. I drink 1/2-1 ounce of tonic water in juice 1/2 hour before bed every night and have had absolutely no twitches, creepy crawleys or any other symptom of RLS. The amount I take is very small, but works great.
Unless you have a predisposition to side effects from Quinine I highly recommend it instead of prescriptions that definitely have side effects, some severe. I hope this helps someone out there.

Does anyone know the names of the pharmacies that carry the Tonic water with Quinine in it?

I am a 72-year old male who suffers inner thigh, hamstring, and calf charley horse type muscle contractions, mostly in the early morning around 3:00 am.
It is caused by a diuretic (Aldactone) and over exertion from swimming with large swim fins and long walks every day. I also take Lioresal, a muscle relaxant; however, it offers little help.
I wish not to cut back on exercising, as this is the only pleasurable part of my aging existence.
This morning I drank a glass of quinine tonic water and took a salt tablet after suffering continuous inner thigh muscle contractions, all of which are extremely painful.
It is 0200 now and the spasms have not returned, but I am afraid to sleep again as this usually causes a recurrence of these painful charley horse contractions.
It appears to work even though the taste of this quinine tonic water is horrible.
This forum is very helpful as I see that I am not alone with this problem.

Does tonic water come in diet?

I have been reading the comments about quinine cramp relief and the potential side effects.
Some years ago I was prescribed a 200mg dose to be taking before bedtime. I got no relief but loved the bitter taste of quinine so much I started chewing the tables. After about three weeks and still no relief, I doubled the dose to 400 mg. It seemed to help marginally at the increased dose, and I was pleased with two pills to crunch for that bitter taste I love so much. After about one month the slight relief I had from 400 mg had worn off so I added another 200 mg to my nightly dose. Finally, I got excellent relief from my nightly leg cramps, and of course with 600 mg of tasty bitter quinine to chew, I was delighted.
I never had any side effects from 600 mg and even added half a pill to that after another month or so as the effect had lessened.
Now it’s not easy to get a prescription for quinine so I drink 6 liters of Tonic water every day. It seems to work better and that bitter taste is great all day long.
People’s Pharmacy response: Some people would develop unpleasant side effects as a consequence of that much tonic water. Rashes, neurological complications, and blood disorders have all been reported. So much tonic water could also make a person more susceptible to sunburn.

I took quinine tabs when they were available and they were great.
I use the soap under the sheet now. Any kind works although some are bumpy/oddly shaped.
Sometimes they move down to the foot of the bed, past where my feet are and then I get a cramp. At that point, a drink of diet tonic water is the cure and I keep a bottle of now-flat (all the fizz is gone but the tonic remains!) tonic water in the bathroom.
This works well.

I find this interesting; years ago when I was small (up to about 13 years of age) you could buy quinine in a bottle from the chemist; every time I had a cough or cold my mother would send me off to school after I had had a tablespoonful of neat quinine and sugar – same when I came home and same before bed.
I’m just wondering what deficiency I might have because of that.

a friend suggested tonic water for my restless leg problem. I mixed it first with fruit juice but now have found quinine tonics online that you can mix with fruit juice for a non-carbonated, and quite tasty solution to this problem! maybe because it works! And it works fast.

I use quinine successfully for foot cramps with no side effects. I mix 1/2 orange juice with half tonic water. I drink it once a day. 6 oz. does the job. Good Luck

If you are taking statins, then do not take quinine, no matter how small the dose. It can cause arrythmia which in turn can cause fainting. NOT GOOD when you’re driving a car! (speaking from personal experience here.)
PEOPLE’S PHARMACY RESPONSE: The combination of a statin with quinine increases the risk of a bad reaction in the muscles.

My doctor told me about the soap under the sheet between me and the mattress. IT WORKS!! No leg cramps for months now!!

having been to my G P for banging in the ears I was prescribed steriod ear drops and went to see a specialist at the hospital in Thame. The banging stopped suddenly for about 1 month and then began again when I drank bitter lemon drink purchased from Lidl.. On reading the label I realized that it contained quinine. Someone I met on holiday had suggested this may be the reason.
I wonder why the specialist did not ask if i drank drinks containing quinine.
Your article has been useful and the drinks are down the drain

I have been suffering from guttate psoriasis and in researching it I saw that certain antimalarial medications can trigger onset of the psoriasis. I drink quite a bit of diet tonic water and remembered that quinine (which is found in tonic water in small doses) is an antimalarial. Is there anything in studies that connects outbreaks of guttate psoriasis with the consumption of tonic water?

take potassium, magnesium and drink about 40-80 oz of water a day and you will have ZERO CRAMPS. that will fix cramps.

Any thing over done is not good for us. However, that being said, my leg
spasms/cramps as many have stated warranted me trying the tonic water/quinine and I have had great, positive results. One can and bam I can feel the cramps starting to disappear. Been using a can of the tonic and equal amount of simple tap water. Thus 20 to 24 ounces of beverage seem to work rather fast.

I am a big fan of tonic water with quinine. I am a suffer of leg and feet cramps. One night being out with a friend of mine, my legs began to tighten up. I had asked him to stop at the local drug store so I could purchase some advil, he told me he would go in and get me some tonic water. He told me that he went to the pharmacist and told her what I was experiencing and she recommend the tonic water with quinine in it. Since then, whenever I get any kind of cramping in my body—I drink tonic water with quinine.

Wow! I thought I had a unique discomfort at night. Just this week I told my doctor about my toes cramping at bedtime. She said: “oh just drink quinine water.” She did not tell me how, and I didn’t think to ask. Now that I’ve researched quinine water, I see I am not alone and I’ve learned a whole bunch of stuff…:-). Thanks for posting your experiences all-you-leg-crampers.

I have just recently started drinking Tonic Water find it refreshing with a slice of lemon or lime.. However since I started drinking the carbonated stuff I have been getting Nocte Leg Calf Muscles cramp… since I started drinking the stuff and this happens everytim.. This has occurred on several occasions now…
I thought Quinine was supposed to stop Calf night time cramps not induce them!
.. Why is this? could it be I am not getting enough potassium or losing it due to the peeing.. I take diuretics daily frusemide 20mgs..
Its having an adverse effect on me the quinine in the tonic water? it seems or its a coincidence..
Roger
Drinking half a liter of tonic water twice a day is more than sufficient for most sufferers of muscle cramping, BUT – beware that quinine has varying deleterious effects on some people, and can be quite dangerous for those with even a mild allergy to it. Quinine affects the liver, the renal system (kidneys), and the heart, and should only be tried with clearance from one’s physician. Even in the low amounts of store bought tonic water, drinking too much may cause adverse effects.
Quinine in any other form, tablets, capsules, etc. should only be used after completely discussing such with one’s physician, heart doctor, and any other medical care providers one may have. There is a reason the FDA has not condoned the use of quinine for anything other than uncomplicated malaria. Here’s a link from July, 2010 about the warning the FDA issued regarding quinine: http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jul/08/news/la-heb-fda-quinine-qualaquin-cramps-20100708

I’m just hapy to read that i’m not the only person to get muscle spasms allover my body… i get them when i yawn many times. yes, when i bend over for more than 30sec, my abdomen spasms. hands feet back, legs. the worst is the thigh spasm, mostly @ night. they last 7min. nothing helps once they start.
many times the opposite leg starts spasming in lower leg ,foot to shin. tonic water does help prevent the night attacks when i drink it. i’ve acquired a taste for it without juices.
i have started taking the PM Leg Cramp from Hyland dissolvable tabs & been taking 3 which help me fall asleep better. the total body spasms have increased with age. started more after menopause. my blood work has always been wnl.
I take calcium-600mg & recently started a magnesium-250mg & potassium tab- 99mg before bed. I do see my chiropractor every couple months esp when my hands start & the adjustments definitely help. no, i don’t eat fruit every day which i know i should. i’m 64yrs with pre-hypertension & starting with diabetes 2. am healthy cept for insomnia nights like this & fear of the night spasms.

Tonic water helped me for leg cramps, it helped more when Potassium 150mg was in mixer brand. I could not find this brand in any store this year.

Several years ago my personal physician told me about tonic water and it has helped control leg cramps whenever needed. However, it has been quite a while since this happened to me again. To my surprise, when I started drinking only about a quarter of a cup of tonic water mixed in a glass of iced tea or juice in the evening, the pain in my lower back and hips also disappeared! Since I am a healthy, active senior citizen who enjoys working in the yard and taking care of my plants, trees and flowers, etc., this is a real blessing for me.

Sufered leg cramps for years. Personal physician recommended Tonic Water. Works great. However, have had back pain and was talking Aleve in the proper dosage (2 tablets a day – one in morning and one in evening). Currently being treated for loss of hearing in left ear. When I researched the ear problem and possibility it was caused by Aleve, I found that Aleve was an ototoxic drug and so was quinine. Even though I was taking the correct amount of Aleve, it is possible that because of the quinine in Tonic Water, that I was overdosing. I am very sensitive to drugs. May not cause another person problems, but everyone should check side effects of drugs (OTC and prescribed) before taking. All info in not always on bottle.

I had used quinine capsules (tasteless) for leg cramps for years until they were replaced with tablets which are unbelievably horrid. Tried the soap for a while and it worked (suspect it MUST be new soap).
However if tonic water works (and I have no personal fear of quinine), I’ll use tonic water – especially in view of reports of how quickly it works.
I am happily “addicted” to your newspaper columns and to this computer page. Please, never stop.
Thank you

I was prescribed quinine for leg cramps. Took 1 pill and nearly died. I went to the emergency room and it had already started shutting down my liver. Then my kidneys were next. My family was all called in because they said I would not live. by Gods grace I am alive, after a month of hospitalization, dialysis, and a lot of prayer. But I will never eat or drink ANYTHING with quinine in it. You never know what it can do to you. Concerned .

I suffered from VERY severe inner thigh cramps for years until about 5 months ago when I learned of tonic water. I have been drinking a glass a day since then and haven’t had an INNER THIGH CRAMP since.
What is odd however is that is does not help to reduce cramping in other parts of the body- only the horrible thigh cramps. Has anyone else had this experience?
C. Clark
I also have night leg cramps. I should say I used to have them. I read that drinking a lot of water will help to deter leg cramps and I must say that it does work. Many years ago a doctor gave me a prescription for quinine and that helped even more but they don’t prescribed it anymore because of all these FDA warnings. About two months ago I found tonic water with quinine.
I’m still trying to drink a lot of water but the ratio is 1/2 water to 1/4 quinine to 1/4 flavored water with a little Splenda to take away the bitterness. This combination works well for me but I’m still careful at night when I turn over because stretching my legs is what caused those ungodly leg cramps that went all the way up to my thigh.

I’ve reviewed your site several times when I had problems and find it very helpful. Thank you for caring for people like us who are constantly seeking the most natural way to help with out physical problems and not rely on the pharmaceutical companies for our sustenance.
Keep up the good work!

I am a ballet dancer/teacher and have suffered arch and calf cramps since I was a child. The quickest relief is to stretch and hold the cramped muscle in the opposite direction. But the past year I have been experiencing excruciating inner thigh leg cramp that wake me up in the middle of the night. There is no stretch I have been able to find to relieve it.
Years ago a pharmacist recommend quinine tablets used to treat malaria to relieve cramps. It worked so well I thought I would try it again, but alas found out they were no longer available. I resorted to diet tonic water and it appeared to be working. On the days I remembered to drink it I never had the bad inner thigh leg cramps. But I have discovered I am extremely stopped up, to the point of not having a bm for over a week. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this particular side effect? Now when my husband tells me I’m full of it I know he is telling the truth. I have also had trouble sleeping.

I tried some Indian Tonic Water which has quinine in it and I was doubling up in pain all night with severe stomach cramps.

My sister in-law went to her doctor, and he recommend tonic water with quinine for her pain in her feet. As I have the same pain but not only in my feet all over my body muscles, I start drinking like 6 oz. every night, and let’s me tell you it has worked for me. I feel much better. MIRACULOUS!!!

I read that putting a small bar of soap in a sock under your sheets at night helps leg cramps, I tried it and it works.

Some years ago I went for an eye exam and complained that one of my eyes constantly twitched. Tonic water with quinine was prescribed. It worked. To this day when I encounter the twitching eye I buy tonic with quinine. I have recommended it to others who have complained of having the same condition. They too say it worked for them. I have never experienced noticeable side effects.

I had horrible leg cramps in the middle of the night and they were coming one after another – several at a time until I wanted to scream – they hurt so much. Several at a time. Went to my doctor and he said take tonic water and I haven’t had a cramp ever since. Love it.

I have muscle cramps all over my body. If I bend over to tie my shoes, my abs cramp. If I reach up to stretch, my side cramps. If I lean back in a chair, my back cramps. If I bend my knee to >90 degrees, my hamstring cramps. Any position to uncramp a muscle, results in its opposite cramping.
At times, I’ve had my abs cramp and as I stretch them, my back cramps. Then there’s no where to go. This goes on all day, although some days it doesn’t happen, but I just couldn’t take it anymore. The doctor checked my labs and said there was nothing wrong with me.
I have no serious illnesses or other symptoms. Then I read that someone said tonic water helped. I figured why not? Any day that I mix about 3-4 oz of tonic water with juice is a day without muscle cramps. I hope they never take it off the market. I believe in it. Oh… I don’t have the typical night time leg cramps. Go figure.
glm
I was having cramps 3 to 6 times per day in my legs, arms, hands and back. Everything tested normal in my blood tests. My doctor suggested drinking 8 oz. of tonic with quinine every day. I have been drinking the tonic water with quinine for over a month and only had one cramp.
I believe that the quinine was counter acted by the four cups of regular coffee that I drank. I now only drink decaf coffee and have had no cramps. I don’t know if there will be any side effects from the quinine but life is good without the cramps.

Is it possible to be taking too many otc vitamins and minerals which subsequently cause severe leg cramps (charley horse)?

tonic water for rls is the great… it worked the first night I drank it… I mix it with a little cranberry or grape juice and it’s great… you only need about 4-6ozs

what causes tonic water to glow when under a blacklite? Is it the quinine.

A fall over 9 years ago, 3 surgeries over a 6 year period ending with a total knee replacement and only 6 months of relief and 2 years on Quinine have left me with almost constant confusion, have ringing in ears but no leg cramps.
It started with about 24 cramps throughout the day and night for several weeks. Severe, unable to straighten the injured leg and extremely painful, they were behind the knee. The surgeon said the cramps are from inflammation in the knee. Will tonic water work? How does the mustard work? Please help, I want my life back!

YELLOW MUSTARD, supplement MINERALS: MAGNESIUM,Z INC AND CALCIUM will help too, along or in combination (or foods rich in these minerals).

I generally take potassium to avoid leg cramps. Occasionally, I run out of it, or forget to take it for a few days. The leg cramps return within days. My chiropractor had told me about taking the tonic water with quinine for the cramps, and I find it works great for me. I especially like it in the summer time, as it is refreshing. I just drink it chilled; as little as four ounces a day seems to be enough for me. And foods high in potassium should help, too.
J. Collins
My Rheumatologist suggested tonic water for my ‘on again, off again’ restless leg problem. I mixed it first with cranberry or another strong flavor juice but now have developed a taste for it just plain; maybe because it works! And it works fast. Recently I drank a little bit just before having an MRI, knowing that restless legs would make lying still impossible. An 8oz. glass works fine for me.

I know this is a subject of serious doubt and debate but – my brother was an orthopedic surgeon and years ago told me to take quinine. OK, can’t
get it any more. TRUST ME, the soap under the sheet works 95 per cent of the time. Put it where your feet would be if your slept without moving.
The “magic” will find you.
Another idea is V8 juice. Away from home this summer, in a new bed without the soap, the cramps promptly arrived. No extra soap hand, I drank a small can of V8 (probably 6-8 oz.) and cramp went away immediately.
Believe it or not, but try it.

I also read your column in the L.A. Times re the FDA banning the use of quinine for leg cramps. I buy a product named Hyland’s Leg Cramps with Quinine at Rite Aide. I put two tablets under my tongue nightly before I go to bed. I’m wondering how can that product be sold, and should I discontinue using it. My doctors are aware that I use it, and haven’t shown any concern about it.
PEOPLE’S PHARMACY RESPONSE: HOMEOPATHIC PRODUCTS SUCH AS THIS ARE SOLD AS DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS. THE SUPPOSITION IS THAT THE DOSE IS TOO LOW TO CAUSE NASTY REACTIONS. WE DON’T KNOW IF THAT IS TRUE.

Many years ago I was suffering from leg cramps almost every night. My doctor gave me a prescription for quinone. I was supposed to take it whenever leg cramps got to be a problem. The first time I took some it worked fine. The next time I developed a high fever. And the next time and the next time.
The doctor insisted that I had an ear infection, or a virus, or a sinus infection. I went to my pharmacist and asked to see his PDR. There, in very tiny print at the bottom of the list of side effects, it listed “an elevated fever”. I never took quinone again and never had the “unexplained” fever again.

There is a homeopathic OTC called Leg Cramps made by Hylands that is effective. It contains quinine in a homeopathic dose as Viscum Album 3X. I purchase mine in natural food stores and vitamin stores.

Does anyone else have any more info on the Tonic Water–I have 2 friends that suffer from night cramps & I would like to pass the info on to them.
PEOPLE’S PHARMACY RESPONSE: MANY PEOPLE TELL US THAT ONE OR TWO GLASSES OF TONIC WATER DAILY PREVENT NIGHT LEG CRAMPS.

I have had severe restless leg syndrome for several years and am on prescription medication for it. However whenever I fly, although I am on RLS medication, I will still feel a slight RLS discomfort and have found that if I drink tonic water during that flight the feeling will disappear. I would be curious if any other people have had this experience.

I have just read your column in today’s L. A. Times (10/11/2010) re quinine. I am 79-years old and need to know if having a little quinine (bottled) at bedtime is harmful as is the tablet. I have leg cramps only once in a while.
I await your answer with great interest.
