woman on scale is shocked at weight gain

Pregabalin (Lyrica) has become a go-to drug for nerve pain (neuropathy). There aren’t many medications in the doctor’s tool kit for this kind of problem. A similar drug, gabapentin, has been approved for treating epilepsy and postherpetic neuralgia. This can be excruciating nerve pain that continues after a shingles attack. These “gabapentinoids” can cause a large number of side effects. Weight gain is surprisingly common among people taking Lyrica. Other common Lyrica side effects include fatigue, vertigo, brain fog, fluid retention, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, gas, depression, tremor and skin rash. Some readers wonder what to do about Lyrica and weight gain.

Lyrica and Weight Gain:

Q. I developed peripheral neuropathy two years ago. I suffered until a neurologist prescribed Lyrica twice a day. Although it has helped my symptoms, I have gained 25 pounds in the last six months. The increase in appetite is very difficult to control. I even wake up at night with hunger pains.

Is there anything to counteract this so I can lose the excess weight? Previously, I was in good health and walked briskly two miles daily. The neuropathy prevents that now.

Why Do People Gain Weight on Lyrica?

A. Increased appetite is a recognized adverse reaction to your medication. This may explain why there is a clear connection between Lyrica and weight gain for many people.

Other Factors Connecting Lyrica and Weight Gain:

Metabolism:

There may also be a metabolic component that is not well understood. In other words, the drug may affect hormones like leptin and ghrelin, which impact weight.

Somnolence:

Sleepiness and dizziness are common side effects of Lyrica. Some studies put the incidence of dizziness around 20 to 30 percent. Somnolence clocks in around 13 to 25 percent. When you feel tired and dizzy all the time, it is hard to move around let alone exercise. Lack of energy is another component to this triad.

Confusion:

There is also a brain fog component to the side effect profile of pregabalin. The official prescribing information describes this as confusion or abnormal thinking. This effect could lead to less motivation to exercise.

Will Changing the Dose Lead to Weight Loss?

Q. I take 200 mg Lyrica daily for nerve pain but I have gained weight. If I cut my dose in half, will I have a corresponding weight loss?

A. Weight gain is among the most common side effects of pregabalin, reported by up to 14 percent of patients taking it (Federal Practitioner, May 2021).  Sadly, we could not find studies demonstrating that reducing the dose results in weight loss.

If you want to lower your dose, please coordinate closely with the prescriber. Discontinuing pregabalin suddenly, or even reducing the dose, could result in a very unpleasant withdrawal syndrome. People may experience headache, nausea, anxiety, insomnia and sweating.

How Common Is Weight Gain?

Some researchers have pointed out that weight gain is one of the most common side effects of Lyrica (Electrolyte & Blood Pressure, Dec. 2016).

The authors write that:

“It is thought that unexplained weight gain may be a sign of fluid retention, which may exacerbate congestive heart failure.”

It is hard to estimate with precision how many people are susceptible to Lyrica and weight gain. A small Japanese study offered the following adverse reactions (Pain Research & Management, Nov-Dec, 2014):

  • Sleepiness 29.8%
  • Unsteadiness 23.6%
  • Weight Gain 5.3%
  • Edema 4.3%
  • Dizziness 3%

The official prescribing information presents data from a number of clinical trials. Lyrica and weight gain range from 4% to 16% depending upon the study.

What Does the FDA Database Report About Pregabalin and Weight Gain?

The Food and Drug Administration has a voluntary reporting system for collecting adverse drug reactions. It is called FAERS (FDA Adverse Event Reporting System). It depends upon patients and health care professionals submitting reports on side effects. Here is a link to the Form FDA 3500 for Health Professionals and FDA Form 3500B for Consumers/Patients.

The international Journal Die Pharmazie published an article on Oct. 1, 2022 about “Drug-induced weight gain in the last 10 years.” It reported a 3.86% weight gain with pregabalin.

The conclusion:

“In conclusion, the present study showed that drug-induced weight gain is a common side effect of several medications frequently used to treat chronic diseases. Healthcare providers should educate their patients about the medicines that may cause weight gain.”

Veterans and Weight Gain with Pregabalin and Duloxetine:

A study published in the journal Federal Practitioner (May, 2021) followed veterans for 12 to 18 months after they were treated for neuropathy. Those on pregabalin alone gained 2.9 pounds. Those who received both pregabalin and duloxetine (Cymbalta) gained 5.5 pounds.

The conclusion:

“The combination therapy of pregabalin and duloxetine was associated with the most amount of weight gain, followed by pregabalin alone.”

More Reports from Readers Re: Lyrica and Weight Gain:

Steph in Florida reports:

“I’ve been on Lyrica for six years now for my fibromyalgia. I’ve been taking 600 mg a day for the last two years. I have gained so much weight just in my stomach only. I’m always bloated on top of that. As the day goes on my stomach gets worse and more bloated. I hate to leave my house because people are always coming up to me asking me how far along I am. That is just what any girl wants to hear, right?

“At first, I didn’t think that it was the Lyrica. I thought that I was just 36 and my body was changing. I’ve had four kids. I’m no longer that skinny girl I’ve always been my whole life. I started working out and making sure I eat healthy food. I wouldn’t lose a pound. I’ve worked out so hard and so much that I literally have hurt the inside of my ankle bone”

Inci in Australia adds:

“Four years ago my GP put me on Lyrica because the nerve pain in my feet was keeping me awake at night. For a few months it seemed to be working. However, the nerve pain came back and the GP increased the dose.

“This should have been a red flag. I was never told about the side effects of the drug. I was experiencing weight gain for no reason, dizziness and loss of balance, itches all over my body and incontinence day or night.”

What To Do About Lyrica and Weight Gain?

As far as we know there are no antidotes to the weight problem. Some experts recommend a healthy diet and exercise. That’s always good advice, but it may not help many people if they have a voracious appetite from the drug and are dizzy and exhausted most of the day.

No one should ever stop Lyrica suddenly! The withdrawal symptoms can be daunting. Here is a link that describes this problem.

People who gain weight on Lyrica should discuss the problem with the prescriber. Always ask your doctor if there are other options for your nerve pain. Benfotiamine (a B vitamin derivative) might offer a different approach to treating neuropathy (PLOS One, Feb. 19, 2015).

We also heard from Susan in Fort Mill, SC:

“I read the letter from the person with peripheral neuropathy and wanted to let you know what works for me. About six years ago the peripheral neuropathy in my left heel was not allowing me to sleep. I checked for a natural remedy. I found a recommendation for a daily dose of a combination of 600 mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid and 100 mg of B-1. Within a few weeks the symptoms were gone. Occasionally I have a very mild reoccurrence, but thankfully I have no need for ‘real’ medicine.”

Before embarking on a dietary supplement regimen, however, please discuss such options with a physician.

I was recently on Lyrica for almost three weeks. I had requested it. I had been on it in the past for Fibromyalgia. I remotely remembered that it made me feel a little off, but I didn’t remember the intensity of the side effects that it caused, until I began taking it this second time around. I have Insomnia, also, so I took Lyrica at night. Instead of it making me feel sleepy soon after taking it, it didn’t make me feel sleepy until the next day, late in the afternoon. I couldn’t get anything done due to being extremely tired and sleepy and dizzy. I didn’t like the side effects, so I stopped taking the medicine.

No worries; I informed my Rheumatologist, and she was okay with me stopping the med because I hadn’t been taking it long, just almost three weeks. I actually was already experiencing headaches, lightheadedness to dizziness, and unsteadiness before I started taking Lyrica. Also, before Lyrica, I barely had an appetite–but that definitely changed. Those symptoms along with what seems like a “forever hunger”became worse, and I gained over 5 pounds in that short time of being on the medicine. I’m usually not a big eater, so it won’t take me long to lose these few extra pounds. 😀

I can’t stop gaining weight no matter how hard I try or how much less I eat. Only in my stomach. I’m beginning to become somewhat depressed over the situation. Since reading this article I am going to have my doctor take me off this medication. I gained 30lbs in about 10 months. I can’t keep going at this rate. Thank you for the info.

I have been on Pregabalin for about 2 months and I’ve gained 20 pounds. I was already obese, and it is causing my ankles to swell and difficulty breathing. On the other hand, it has my nerve pain nearly under control, and I barely have to take any pain meds.

I have been on lyrica for 1 1/2 years. I had no weight gain until one year after taking it – 25 pounds in six months. I have been eating 2/3 of what I used to eat, and the weight keeps coming. Has anyone stayed the same weight, but started a huge gain after one year?

My wife and I have been married for 58 years. We are both in our late 70’s. About 15 years ago weight gain had brought on diabetes. She went through the stomach reduction and intestinal rerouting surgery which got rid of the diabeties. She developed neureopathy for which the doctor prescribed Lyrica 50mg morning 75mg at night. This brought on the “Big Devil” in the back of the room which nobody talks about which is sexual dysfunction. Our libido has been on the decline as we age naturally for several years. When Lyrica was added to the mix her libido decelerated to zero. In the side effects it is called mild. I call it mild hell. Not only did it destroy her sexual function but it turned someone who was normally pleasant and upbeat into a negative, mostly angry, food-aholic. Advice was to talk to our physician. First of all, my wife does not perceive a problem and even if she did she would not have the nerve to talk to anyone about it.

I have not had this side effect, as I only take the Lyrica at bedtime. I have flushing or burning sensation in my feet and occasionally up into my calves. I am fortunate that I have such mild symptoms that I can go without it during the day.

I was given Pregabalin in August, this year, for severe pain diagnosed as spinal stenosis. For relief, it took 300 mg a day to ease the pain. I had most of the side effects mentioned but the worst and most scary side effect was the vision changes, noted even by my retina doctor. (I have macular degeneration and require monthly testing.)

I read a People’s Pharmacy newsletter and realized that Pregabalin is was also known as Lyrica. and visual side effects are common. I immediately began planning to taper off. Called the pain clinic the day before an appointment, and asked about tapering. The “nurse:” said, “just do it.” I said I would ask the doctor the next day, and she cancelled my appointment “if that is all you need.”! I checked with two pharmacists and got little help.

I began lowering by 25 mgmevery five to six days. By October 25th I was off the drug. My next appointment with the retina doctor showed improvement in my vision! I am grateful for the relief it gave me, but the side effects were frighting. My diagnosis was changed to pinched nerve after more tests. Not sure what I would do again. Thanks to this newsletter, I was informed of the side effects.

I too had weight gain with Lyrica, about 5 pounds on my 5’4″ frame. Pre-Lyrica weight was 110…post was about 115. Between the weight gain, fatigue and mind fog the relief that Lyrica provided wasn’t worth the side effects. I titrated off Lyrica without the doc’s help. It took about two weeks. I agree, it wasn’t easy. The worst part was the feeling of depression, but I made it and then I went back on the Gabapentin. I did lose the weight through diet and my continued exercise regimen. None of the drugs I’ve tried are ‘free’ they all have nasty side effects. I guess the trick is to decide which effects you can live with.

I was put on Lyrica by a rheumatologist many years ago for fibromyalgia. I went in for a 3-month check up with my regular doctor, and she took one look at me and said, “Oh my gosh, someone put you on Lyrica.” I had gained that much weight in just 3 months. She noted that it may have changed my metabolism because even after I stopped taking Lyrica soon after that (it didn’t give me symptom relief), I kept the weight on. I’ve had better luck with Savella.

One question. PLEASE tell me if Gabapentin causes these same side effects. I’m taking 800 mg a day and I’ve had a lot of the symptoms I’m reading. Please advise.

Honestly, I could cry reading these comments because I no longer feel alone. I’ve had Fibromyalgia since childhood finally diagnosed in 1998 at the age of 19.

I struggled with it over the years, ups and downs with flares, but it never stopped me until 8 years ago I became very ill and was no longer able to walk. Dr put me on Pregabalin Lyrica, and I started to put on weight. I joined a slimming group everybody else lost week after week after week but not me. Within 3 months of being on 300mg twice a day I put on 5 stone. It was almost as if I went to bed thin and woke up fat over night.

Am an hourglass shape, and the weight fortunately has gone on in proportion,
but am honestly devastated. Yes, I read the info and side effects but if I knew I would have put so much weight on me it would have been nice to know. Would I have still taken it? Yes, without a doubt because I was in so much pain that I was begging them to remove my legs.

This drug saved my life and also took it away at the same time. I learned to walk again and now at age 44 I’m trying to rebuild what was lost but losing weight while taking this drug is honestly impossible for me. I’ve been on a Dr.- led diet plan for 4 weeks, and I have put weight on not off. Am hoping at my next appointment that they will give me something to at least help a little bit because the pain caused by the weight gain is now causing new health issues.

I was in a bad accident with a semi truck on the highway (he ran his red light). Needless to say, I ended up with a traumatic brain injury. I had a Grand Mal-provoked seizure due to the brain injury and had to have 3 level neck surgeries all which led to severe depression and anxiety. I was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia. In comes Lyrica. I was prescribed 150 mg, 3x per day. I deliver for a logistics company so as you can imagine, I’m extremely active typically. I have gained 90 lbs in a matter of 4 years. I was always extremely toned. By routine, I eat once a day and still gained the weight even being so active. I am in constant pain, as one of the artificial discs in my neck has slipped. I also get severe swelling in my ankles. This medication is absolutely insane, and I’m starting to wonder what percentage of people it negatively affects.

I was on Lyrica for about 2 years. I had no idea that this was the cause of all of the problems I had and that it was this medicine caused almost every single event mentioned in these posts. I had brain fog, weight gain, dizziness, increased appetite, confusion, making stupid decisions, double vision, not to mention sleep. I could fall asleep anytime and still put in a regular 8 hours uninterrupted sleep each night. I had leg pain during the night due to a car accident. You know, that terrible pain like someone is sticking red hot needles into your leg and toes? Lyrica was my savior. But it also made me feel suicidal and loose the will to live.

I have a new doctor (in Spain). She has taken me off the Lyrica and put me on another drug called Premax 5mg to ween me off the Lyrica. She has diagnosed Vertigo for which I am taking Serc 16 over 15 days.

Since this change I am a new person with the will to live again. I have lost 6 lbs in just 1 week without even dieting or exercising, I had gained 20 lbs. I have noticed an amazing decrease in hunger/appetite. I do have heart-related problems (3 stents) but that is never a worry to me. I am now looking forward to exercising again; also walking and running which I have missed so much.

I am 74 (male) always been fit and never ill until I started taking this infernal medicine (Lyrica). Now I know that it has been the cause of all of my problems. I would rather suffer the pain than take this Devil’s Tablet again. Please, if you are on Lyrica and suffering and gaining so much weight speak to your health professional/Doctor. But don´t stop without their advice.

I am so glad I found this forum. It has answered a lot things for me.

I was prescribed Lyrica in November of last year. I had recently lost 20 lbs prior to being placed on Lyrica. Now, 4 months later, I have gain 20 lbs + back. I just recently, 2 weeks ago, got off of it. After a group photo at work today I just wanted to cry and thought, “How did I gain this much weight?” I decided to research side effects of Lyrica and realize that this is why. I thank all of you who commented so I have a reason for having gained this weight. Now to get it off!

After a hip replacement my restless leg symptoms went berserk to the point that I was getting 3 to 4 hours sleep a night. My doctor put me on Pregabalin 75mg at night which really helped. But I cut it down to 50mg due to dizziness and brain fog. After 6 weeks I stopped it altogether as I put on weight, predominantly in the abdomen and breasts. While I have lost 5 kgs since stopping 8 months ago I cannot get rid of the extended abdomen and large breasts. I do 3 dance classes per week, 2 of which are high intensive, walk everywhere and do Yoga poses while watching TV. I cannot get into 80% of my clothes. Saw my doctor, and the response was, “Oh, that’s just the way it is as you get older.” I am 78. The only other option is surgery. I just focus on being healthy and fit and go to an op store for new lothes. I have been much heavier in the past than I am now but I have always been in proportion and find this change becoming depressing.

I have been on Lyrica for fibromyalgia since 2009 (so 13yrs). I started taking 75mg 2x a day. Prior to taking it, I was seriously considering going on permanent disability at the age of 42. (I’m a kindergarten teacher, at a full day program, and I am on my feet and active from 8:30 am-5pm.)

I weighed about 145 before taking lyrica, and I am nearly 5’10.” I had a lean runner’s body, and was about a U.S. woman’s size 6/8. I gained 40lbs over about a 4 month period. Even at 185, and my height I was a size 10/12 and just a bit curvier. I actually didn’t hate my new body and even started modeling as a plus size model.

As the years went on I had increased my dosage to 250mg 2x a day. And still feeling ok. I mean, I have never been totally pain free but I still can work and live a full life. I also have moderate to severe osteoarthritis in my fingers, knees, neck, shoulders and back. I also went up to about 210 lbs. Still maintained a fairly nice figure at a woman’s size 14, and didn’t gain it all in just my belly or anything so I wasn’t too upset. But during covid I wasn’t working and was much more sedentary. I ballooned to 250. This distorted my face and gave me a slight double chin and also increased pain due to the weight on my knees and hips and back. Now I did get a belly.

I have to nearly starve to see the scale move while on Lyrica. I am eating 1000 calories a day with drs blessing and I am slowly losing and am now back to 217 and feeling much better and shooting for about 190-195. This is so tough because being off Lyrica causes me to be almost non functional, but being on it has its challenging!

I was on Lyrica for many years for Fibromyalgia burning in my muscles. I put on tons of weight mostly around my middle.
In 2018 I was able to wean myself off it by using CBD oil. I then managed by 2021 to wean myself off Morphine.
In 2019 I lost all my weight by eating a Keto diet. I went from 12st 7lb to 8st10lb.

But in March this year my neuropathic pain came back. I ended up on a very low dose of Lyrica again. 50mg twice a day.
I’ve put 10lb on. Mostly round my belly again. Despite maintaining my Keto lifestyle,it won’t shift. I do intermittent fasting, but can’t exercise due to M.E/CFS and the Fibro.

Thank you everyone! I’ve been on Lyrica for about 2 years now for ME/CFS. It really helps. But I’ve gained almost 80lbs! And nothing I do seems to stop the weight gain. Due to insurance issues I was off it for 2 weeks and suddenly lost 7lbs! But my ME/CFS symptoms got worse, so when I got my prescription I started taking it full dose again. Yesterday I got home from work and noticed my legs and feet were swollen up like balloons. I lay down and took aspirin but nothing helped. Now I’m sure it is the Lyrica that caused it! I’m going to talk to my doctor about weaning off of it. The weight gain and skin side effects aren’t worth it. I’m 37 with a “8 months pregnant” belly and acne like a teenager. :-(

I’m 64 years old and 5’3. I used to weigh about 135 and had a flat tummy. After about a month on Lyrica my weight gain all around my torso is only 5 pounds, but impossible to lose and looks like much more than just five pounds. It seems to help with the neuropathic pain, but I’m so unhappy about how my body looks, I may try to cut back on Lyrica. Any suggestions for losing the weight and for other things to try to lessen the pain welcome? I’ve tried acupuncture and gabapentin. Still taking gabapentin. Acupuncture didn’t help.

I gained 87 pounds the first yr. I was on Lyrica for fibromyalgia. I was devastated. I weened off it. Started making my own super good smoothies, a sensible dinner. I went to the gym only able to ride the bike. I got up to riding 20 miles a day, then I started the treadmill and swimming. I lost it all within 10 months. Now I only get Lyrica when I’m feeling really bad because there is NO LOSING WEIGHT while taking it consistently.

I have hypothyroidism as well as type 2 diabetes which I believe is from Lyrica weight gain. I was ravenously HUNGRY at night. Actually sleep eating. It was awful, I HAD TO EAT. I’m going to get weaned off it again, and I have 45 pounds to lose. It’s incredibly ridiculous. The benefits do not outweigh the risks for me, but when I need it, I really, really need it.

I have been taking Lyrica since 2012. It’s been the only medication that has helped me at all with my fibromyalgia. After taking two years to diagnose and trying a variety of meds I’m allergic to, I decided to continue 225 mg twice a day. Weight gain has been a struggle. I am just short of 6′ and have slowly made it to 238 lbs. I have that fog all of the time, think insomnia has set in, and plan to discuss reducing the dosage because of bouts with blurred vision and major dry mouth. I’m told I may have Sjogren’s, but until I get a biopsy when I have a clogged salivary gland issued done, don’t know if it is from Lyrica yet!

I have been on lyrica for about 4 yrs and have gain almost 60lbs all stomach and butt. Yes I look 9 months pregnant. I tried diets, starving, and nothing works. I am a very active 59 yr old.

I have custody of my 5 grandkids ages 8 5 4 2 yr old twins so lounging around is not an option. My dr has mentioned a new drug called saxenda for weight loss. It is a self injection. Insurance in Canada does not cover it and it is about $400.00/ so that or bypass surgery. I hate the way I look. I’m ashamed humiliated and look like a bag lady because of the baggy clothes I wear to cover up my ugly shape.

There is no doubt Lyrica works and also no doubt it caused all this weight gain. A surgeon damaged my sciatic nerve during hip replacement surgery. I Hope one of those 2 options helps shed something. I worry about strokes and heart attacks because I’m obese (that’s a word I never thought that would describe me).

It is both concerning and depressing – weight gain I now have to accept, as this is the first pain relief I have had for 15 or more years. I’ve gone from acupuncture to very strong pain killers which brought only short term relief. It was severe.

I have peripheral neuropathy. Within three months I gained 50 pounds on this drug. I was exercising twice a week, the most my profile for neuropathy would let me; was eating less than 1300 cal/day; taking Adderall and Wellbutrin, both which are for weight loss. When I first started my journey with purple gravity I weighed 137. Now I weigh over 200 pounds.

I was a girl who went to the gym two hours a day – was a total gym rat and extremely strict with my diet. With Lyrica I’ve developed with Lyrica fat over my stomach that overhangs. Never in my life have I had a body like that. I guess Lyrica is known to do this with belly fat. I really don’t see a way out other than to stop the Lyrica. But without the Lyrica I wasn’t able to get out of bed for a year and a half. However I just won’t be able to get out of bed now.

I still can’t lose the weight of water no matter how many times I go to the gym. I will try a calorie deficit but what I’ve heard is that you can’t touch carbs sugar or anything other than lean protein vegetables and working out 2 to 3 hours a day is the only way to steadily keep your weight the same or slowly lose the weight but so far in my experience Lyrica has been a nightmare.

Gabapentin didn’t work. The side effects of Lyrica are so severe I feel like I’m choosing which should be able to walk beginning so much weight it’s uncomfortable to walk and I can’t be sitting outside in public versus being skinny and stuck in bed at home. Now I can’t even choose to be skinny stuck in bed at home because I weigh over 200 pounds.

This has destroyed my life. I would do anything to go back in time stop the Lyrica even the gabapentin did not do this to me even that be able to work out and leave the bed did not do this to me within three months of Lyrica I gained over 45 pounds instantly in the places I would never gain weight before

I’m taking Lyrica for anxiety, and it’s the best medication I’ve ever used for that. Unfortunately, it’s causing extreme bloating in my abdomen. I’m male and, yes, I look pregnant. I body-build so I’m very careful with my diet. I’m experimenting with a lower dose but I realize I may have to stop. I can, at least, use it as needed if it comes to that but I will try Gabapentin again first. I don’t recall it doing this but it’s also not as effective for anxiety. I’m super disappointed about it.

Ten years ago I was on lyrica for 3 months to treat nerve pain. I gained 10 pounds each month and went from 140 to 170 lbs. All of the weight gain was in the stomach area. Once I came off the drug the weight gain stopped, but I seem to have set a new base weight of 170 and have ranged from 165 to 180 lbs ever since. (Currently 172 lbs). I was in a lot of pain, which the lyrica only slightly reduced. The limited pain relief was not worth the decade of the additional 30 lbs.

I am on 600 mg of Lyrica a day for fibromyalgia for over a year. I gained 25 pounds. I had to go to my primary doctor for a diet pill to kill my appetite. He gave it to me, and I have to make my body go into ketosis to lose weight by only eating lean protein for at least 3 days. Then I gradually add no carb veggies and low sugar fruits. If you start gaining again you go back to the lean protein. You must take a multi vitamin and a shot of B12. I did this originally years ago by going to a diet doctor. I can only take off weight with the help of phentermine which is a diet pill which you can only get from a doctor. I am 75 years old and no longer can take off weight by exercise. That is my story.

I have been taking Lyrica for about 9 months now and have gained a whomping 44 lbs! I am 5’6 and went from 150 to 175 when I was on 150 mg three times a day. Since July of this year, and getting put on 300 mg twice a day, I’m at 193 and climbing. I have an increased appetite but I have been watching what I eat lately. I work out 2-3 times a week, and I am a server at IHOP for a living so I am walking constantly!!

This drug has to be messing with the hormones in my body because I’m gaining weight, and I’m doing everything right! Not to mention I’m on Vyvanse, Wellbutrin, and Vivitrol, which all have weight-loss properties, and none of them are counteracting the Lyrica!! I’m going to discuss with my doctor and wean off this medicine. It’s not worth the side effects and weight gain. I hate looking at myself in the mirror!

I was put on Lyrica for fibromyalgia. I weighed 107 pounds and shot up to 147 pounds on a 5’2” frame. I went off of it and developed diabetic neuropathy as I was a pre-diabetic before due to steroids for lung disease. Now I am a diabetic with a huge stomach on top of the pain of nerve disease. My diet is healthy but the weight does not come off. To gain so much weight at my age of 74 is a dangerous thing, or any age for that matter. My ability to lose weight seems to have been permanently altered by the Lyrica. I think the side-effects outweigh (no pun intended) the benefits. I am in total sympathy with the victims and also very angry at the doctors who pushed this medicine without really telling their patients the consequences..maybe they too were taken in by the ads which I don’t see so much now on TV.

I started out on Gabapentin for sudden unexplained neuropathy in my feet. Within 6 months I had gained 25 pounds. Felt bloated and tired all the time. My Dr changed me to Lyrica, and I gained another 15 pounds. Went from a size 2 to 12 and am steadily gaining. Am weaning off now after 14 months on the meds, as I have suffered painful urination for past 5 months that has now been linked to Lyrica. You have to wonder if the relief is worth all the side effects. We will see how it goes. Open to any recommendations.

I took Lyrica for my fibromyalgia about 7 years ago, and gained almost 15 pounds in less than two months. I discontinued taking Lyrica when I made the connection between the medication and my rapid weight gain. Almost all of the weight went to belly fat. I have tried every diet on earth to try to lose this weight, and I just can’t get it off. Honestly, I eat a very healthy, low carb diet. Is there research being done on this issue with Lyrica? It is NOT worth it to exchange one medical problem for another. I’d rather live with my Fibromyalgia than risk diabetes, joint pain, and all of the other issues that come with being overweight. Doctors, please be careful prescribing this medication until you can figure out why so many people have such rapid weight gain with it. Because it goes straight to the abdomen, it is extremely difficult to lose weight in this area!

I am a 64 year-old woman who has been on Lyrica for about 2 years. I take it for a pinched nerve in my neck/spine. It takes the pain away completely, plus, I had migraines for years, and since I started taking this medication, I have not had one single migraine headache!! – I have gained about 25pounds in the abdomen. I started keto diet which is a VERY STRICT diet, not more than 20 carbs a day, and I’ve lost 20 pounds in 3 1/2 months. The Keto diet works, and I also walk 3-4 times a week and do a workout routine 4-5 times a week at home, with HasFit, which is free on the internet.HasFit is an excellent workout routine that has something for every age. I do the senior routines, which are pretty good little workouts, in the privacy of my own home. Good luck everyone. Anne

I have had chronic nerve pain and have had every medication in the last 12 years. I went from a UK size 4-6 to a UK 12. Last February I came off all but one of my medications, these included pregabalin and opioids. Because I did not have any support from my GP I ended up in hospital in acute withdrawal and was doing very poorly. I overcame this, though it was incredibly hard coming off those medications :-(

I changed my GP and went 4 weeks ago to get advice about coming off of OxyContin. Saw my GP about doing a correct transition from pregabalin which I had been on previously for 8 years. Because I was on 7 different medications I could not isolate pregabalin as the cause of doubling my size. Boy, can I now!! I am literally hungry all the time. I usually have small, healthy portions, and I am also vegan. I know if I stay on pregabalin I will go to a size 12 again and no, I am not accepting that, as it made me feel so miserable!! I am way too petite to be a size 12 and weight gain around your waist and stomach can result in serious health issues.

I am seeing my GP again this coming Monday and I am going to say I am not willing to transition from OxyContin to pregabalin, and we will need to think of another one instead.
Any suggestions/ advice will be much appreciated?!

Yes, Pregabalin can reduce pain but at a significant cost in both the short term and long term. I am not willing to continue taking them. I feel greedy as I just can’t feel full. No matter how much or little you eat if this medication results in huge weight gain, try another one!! I certainly will!

I have been taking Lyrica for about 4 months. It helped the nerve pain and sciatica. But weighed 7 stone 7 before the drug. I am now 9 stone and have never been this weight in my life apart from being pregnant. I am terrified of going off it because of the pain. I am waiting for a discectomy. But I just cannot continue with this with weight gain! It’s getting ridiculous!! There must be an alternative apart from gabapentin, which I don’t get on with.

I started taking Lyrica after my Gabapentin just stopped working. So far I have gained 30 lbs. The difference is that now I hardly eat. I used to be known for how much I ate before and was the size of a stick. Now, I sometimes have to be reminded to eat. I just don’t get that hungry. So I don’t eat a lot, as they mentioned. The only difference is sugar in my coffee. I was told no more sweeteners. I can’t deal with this. It’s making me crazy. I’m about to say it’s back to sweeteners. Don’t know what else it is. If I don’t eat is it the Lyrica still?

I have been having severe facial/jaw/ear/he’d pain for several years, and it’s just getting worse. I went to my doctor today and asked for something for the pain until we figured out what this is. He thinks it’s trigeminal neuralgia and has prescribed Lyrica. It’s at the pharmacy waiting for pick up now. I am terrified of taking this led due to all the comments about weight gain and tiredness. I just can’t afford to gain weight. I’ve already quit exercising because of the pain and have waited about 10. Is there another option? I mentioned Gabapentin, but he said Lyrica was better with less side affects.

I just started on Lyrica two days ago. I feel so hung over on it! My head is in a dense fog! I am trying to lose some weight, yet now am learning that it causes substantial weight gain! I was prescribed this drug due to back pain and sciatica. Neurontin did not work. I’m contemplating going down this road, and not taking it any longer since it’s only been two days. Does anyone really know what percentage of people who take this gain weight? I’ve looked at the stats on some sites that reflect the percentage is fairly low, but not after reading this forum. Does anyone have any more info. regarding the percentage of people who gain weight? Thanks!

My question is: If I reduce my dosage of Lyrica, will I be able to lose weight? I have not seen an answer to this. I joined a gym and worked out with a trainer for two years, and I did not lose any fat. Also, I eat very little, and only healthy food. I am working on gradually reducing my dosage, and I wonder if anyone has has success with this. I was taking 150 mg 3 times a day. Now I am taking 100 mg instead of 150 for the middle dose.

To those of you who gain weight taking Lyrica and Gabapentin: it’s pretty common. I was very thin and had been all my life. I never had to diet and ate pretty much what I wanted. I started gaining weight immediately after I started taking Gabapentin. I did lose about ten pounds dieting, but that’s all. I have peripheral neuropathy, and it’s very difficult to do a lot of walking. It’s very hot where I live. I bought a recumbent bike that has helped with exercising. I can sit down and ride in the a/c.

I will say that before I got back to riding the bike I got very weak. You need to do something to keep your muscles strong. I know how difficult it is to exercise, but just trust me, and don’t give up. I’m 68 and weigh too much, but I just can’t stop taking Gabapentin. I’m in way too much pain. I also take Tramadol for pain. It does a lot to help control the pain. If I have a really bad day, I’m forced to take narco. It helps so much, but is very addictive.

I’ve read that cold laser helps with neuropathy. I would love to know if anyone has tried it and their results. Also, stem cell injections that are approximately $6,000 each. Lol! I just started using turmeric and ginger in tea and shakes. They are both good for inflammation and pain. I also take NerveRenew that I order online. If you are deficient in B-12, that could be part of your problem. Just remember you need to take B-12 as methylcobalamin. This is very important. Good luck to all and God Bless! Without my Faith I would go crazy.

I started taking Lyrica because of the edema from taking higher doses of Gabapentin (600mg 3x a day). However, since taking Lyrica I’ve recently noticed edema and weight gain. It’s as if I’m insatiable! I’m on this drug because I experience debilitating sciatica (all long the leg and shin, the same leg where I had had knee replacement surgery just 5 months prior) and could barely walk. After reading these posts I’m starting to wonder if maybe reducing the dose of Gabapentin is better than this Lyrica. My sister takes Gabapetin and didn’t notice swelling or weight gain. This throws me for a loop. I’m so sick of physical therapy, too.

I had a lower lumbar fusion which failed, and I’ve had a tremendous amount of nerve pain since to the point I couldn’t stop thinking of my pain most of the day. If I lay in bed all day I wouldn’t hurt so much but I already had lived in bed for almost ten years. I got sciatica after the surgery as well as terrible nerve pain. I feel nerve pain really hasn’t been conquered in terms of meds.

I’ve been on lyrica for about two months now. I have to say lyrica has changed my life. I no longer feel sciatica, and I have hardly had any nerve pain. I’ve tried gabapentin with no luck. I forgot that lyrica caused weight gain and noticed I’ve gained a lot of weight. My clothes don’t fit me. I don’t have a full length mirror. When I saw myself in a full length mirror yesterday I felt sick looking at myself. I’m going to try a diet but according to many that won’t help. I knew this might happen when I took it. That was different than seeing it and not fitting in my clothes. If I have to gain weight so be it unless I gain 40 pounds.

The lyrica has given me a new life (so far), and I will have to try any way I can find to lose the weight. I have trouble exercising, as it causes me pain the next day. I live in a hilly area which it’s hard for my back when walking. Luckily I live in a place that has a few swimming pools and a gym. I’m going to try swimming and start a regular regimen and try cutting calories. What else can I do? Right now I’ll take the side effects, as the difference in my quality of life is huge. I still have pain if I do a full day without lying down. I do feel a little dizzy and have some brain fog. Again, the quality of my life has drastically changed so I will stay on it.

I was put on lyrica for fibromyalgia pain and it did work but I gained a lot of weight fast on it, I’d also been on steroids for a rare vascular autoimmune syndrome that was affecting my CNS and eyes at that time. I stopped all of the drugs that were causing weight gain but not until I’d gained nearly 150 pounds between them all and the disability these diseases were causing. I developed diabetes and was so fat I felt like I was suffocating under all of the fat! I finally got gastric bypass surgery as it was the only way to get rid of the weight and it was the best choice I have ever made! I didn’t lose as much as I wanted and if I could do it again I’d go on a strict liquid diet and lose as much weight as possible Before the surgery. I did get rid of the diabetes and the sleep apnea. I would never use lyrica again I will go buy heroin for the pain if the doctor ever stopped my opiates and I won’t use steroids unless I developed an anyrisium or some other type neurobehcet’s complications that will kill me! If you can use it without weight gain then it worked but the weight gain was significant enough I’d have probably died from the complications of it without the bypass!

I’m curious as to the dosage everyone used when weight gain occurred. My neurologist has prescribed 50 mg 3x/ day. When I tell him I’m very concerned about weight gain on this drug he says it usually doesn’t happen at that dose. People think it’s something we’re doing when we gain weight on these drugs and it’s just not true. It changes something in your body to cause this side effect and it’s not well studied.

I Had AC5 – 6, C6-7 Front neck fusion and then had to have rear neck fusion in the same spot. On the front neck fusion, they hit my spinal cord causing a spinal cord incomplete injury, which paralyzed me for 2 and a 1/2 hours on the left side. I have a permanent SCI and permanent muscle spasticity on the left. I was placed on Lyrica, and I have gained over 40 pounds in the last 18 months taking 300 MG twice A-day. I have tried numerous things to correct my diet, my calorie intake and other habits. Is Gabapentin better then lyrica? I will be seeing my pain management doctor in a week and would like to know the best questions to ask to manage permanent nerve pain due to the spinal cord injury. In my case my brain is on FM radio and my nerves are on am radio and cannot talk. I still have significant nerve pain.

I was on Lyrica for 2 years, and I gained 45 pounds during that time. It didn’t matter what I did, even starving myself, I could not lose weight while on Lyrica. After going through a horrible withdrawal I finally got completely off Lyrica. It took about 3 months but then I finally started losing weight. With regular diet management I have been able to lose 35 pounds. I feel confident the last 10 will come off easily enough. The only way I know to lose weight gained from Lyrica is to get the heck off that miserable drug!

I was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy and facet disease through osteoarthritis after suddenly having unbearable pain through my lower back into my buttocks. Not one physician could offer anything for help and all said it wasn’t something operable, etc. Finally, my Physician Assistant suggested nuerontin then gababentin, finally lyrica. HUGE mistake. I literally gained over 40 lbs in one year. Didn’t help the peripheral neuropathy whatsoever but it did take some of the pain off my back.

However after being on for that one year suddenly I had severe edema in both legs, then finally after 3-4 months the right leg went back down. My left has stayed slightly swollen ever since, especially my knee and ankle. Then after seeing numerous specialists I’m told I have venous insufficiency. Why, all of a sudden, while taking that blasted lyrica!? Now I practically live off a tens unit for pain since nothing else helps. I have severe pain in my thigh even just barely bumping it walking around or turning over while in bed.

I’ve gone through all the spinal injection therapy, anything and everything over the counter. And besides all this, I now have something going on with my heart. But nobody can figure out what. I’ve sincerely lost all hope in our physicians. I feel like a puppet and a guinea pig each time I see another MD or specialist. Honestly, I think sometimes we’re a guessing game so were prescribed this, then that, then guess what?

My health is ruined!! I was a tad chunky to begin but now I won’t even leave my house due to embarrassment and being terrified of falling, then that’s it. Someone has got to have an honest verified answer ?

I have had peripheral neuropathy from diabetes, fybromyalgia, trigeminal neuralgia, Reynauds, Sjogren’s, severe ostieo-arthritis all over my body, Lupus, spondolitis sciatica that comes to visit now and again, and now MS. I am on 600 mg of lyrica a day. I tape up my feet to get a bit of relief, as lyrica doesn’t work well enough. I am also on Panadeine forte and targin. I also take perindopril for blood pressure that goes as high as 200/115. I am on indaparimide for fluid retention, as I have intense edema all over. On top of that I am on blood thinners, Xaltera,as I had a bad pr bleed last year.

I am 58yrs old. I dont expect to live that much longer, as I have put on 90 kilos due to lyrics and the fact that I can’t walk properly. I had an a ccident when I was slim in 2008: fell onto my knees on concrete. I need them replaced. That’s only part of my problems. If anyone can help please tell me.

Six years ago I fell over 100 feet down a cliff. I broke 22 bones, flattened my left lung, lacerated my spleen, and went into complete respiratory failure on the lifeflight chopper. I have had 4 sets of surgery since then, 2 of which were on my neck. I have fibromyalgyia and possibly Elhors Danlos hyper-mobility version. I will never feel the same as I did before my fall. It was truly traumatic. Before my second neck surgery, the doc had a bone scan done, and there was significant swelling around my lumbar spine. <y doc would not address that. He simply chalked everything up to nerve damage.

I have been on Lyrica and Cymbalta for a couple of years now. Up until then I was on Gabapentin. I have been complaining to my Doc about the weight gain, and his nurse snaps at me about how there is no miracle pill for weight loss, and that the key is caloric intake and exercise. I complain about increased back pain and they snapped at me about how they know I know how to make it feel better. How the heck am I supposed to talk to my doc about anything?! I need to lose 30 pounds. Every joint in my body would feel at least a little better for not carrying that much extra weight.

I think it’s awful that Lyrica causes weight gain. I disagree that it is from overeating or eating salty foods. If I take two 100mg. twice a day I gain two lbs., feel bloated, and retain water. A water pill isn’t helping me to get rid of what I feel is excessive water either. Very unhappy. Going to hopefully try something else for my diabetic neuropathy pain.

I’m fairly new to Lyrica, maybe 3 month for fibromyalgia. I have numerous health issues, one of them going from slight tremors in my hands to now full jerks in hands, arms, hips, even legs. My GP increased dose to 150mg twice a day, but in a matter of 2-3 months I’ve gained 30 pounds. I have very limited exercise I can do unless it’s in a pool, I have extreme anxiety to the point I can barely leave my house, even for doctor appointments I have to be pushed. The only thing that change is adding Lyrica.

I have gastric bypass 4 years and am happy to see that I’m in a size my husband has never seen, I’m back at my high school weight which wasn’t great at 190 size 16; which is where I’m at. I’ve made no sudden changes in my diet, I’ve been very strict about that in fear of gaining weight. However, the weight gain isn’t all that’s happened. I now have the fog, want to sleep all the time, most certainly don’t feel good about my lack of energy since that puts a larger load on my husband and 16 year old son.

I have diabetic neuropathy and have been on Neurontin (gabapentin) for at least 10-11 years, and Lyrica and Cymbalta have been added to my regimen because of how bad my neuropathy is. For the last couple of years, I have been exercising regularly and eating so much better than I ever have. I cannot lose weight to save my life. It’s very frustrating. I drink 3-4 bottles (16 oz) of water a day. I’m taking 1800 mg of Gabapentin a day, 300 mg of Lyrica, and 90 mg of Cymbalta. Almost the full doses of all 3. I can’t make my diabetes better unless I lose weight. If the diabetes is better, then my nerves are better. It’s just a vicious cycle. Not sure what to do.

Lynn, I was on 6-8 150mg Lyrica tablets per day from a bulging disc in my lower back that hit my sciatica nerve roots badly. After 2.5 years of feeling bloody awful and a 17kg (roughly 38 pounds) weight gain in the first 4 months of taking it, I eventually checked into a mental health hospital to get off the stuff. I have managed to lose 9kgs through diet (cutting way back on soft drink and sugar, eating healthier etc) and am now seeing an exercise physiologist to figure out what exercise I can do (but I can’t jump, run or lift my own body weight off the ground in order to get the required sweat level to shed the weight). I walk and do strength training exercises 5 days per week. But for the past 2 months I have plateaued, and can’t lose any more even though I only drink water now and avoid all junk food. I really want to lose the rest so that I can fit back into my old clothes because I hate having to wear baggy clothes all the time. And since ceasing Lyrica over 6 months ago I have sleep maintenance insomnia. I can fall asleep fine, but I wake at 2 or 3am every single morning and I don’t sleep during the day. My doctor is really trying to help with my lack of sleep as it is debilitating and body and mind are so bloody over tired and exhausted, but we’re not having much luck. In short, in my experience, there can be weight loss, but I have had to earn every last kilo/gram lost. Just stopping Lyrica in and of itself, will not result in weight loss.

I’ve been on Lyrica for about 2 months for Restless Leg Syndrome. My RLS is very painful. The Lyrica worked like magic the first week, which I have prayed for. Then slowly it started coming back, the spasms, constant need to move my legs at night and the weird feelings in my legs. I’ve also gained 5 pounds, which I have been struggling not to do. I read that Lyrica could cause weight gain, but I have had incredible appetite that has been hard to control. I’m also very tired now during the day, which I believe is due to the Lyrica. I’ve started feeling like I’m retaining a lot of fluid, so I have decided to stop taking the Lyrica.

My recommendation to you is don’t even do it if you can help not. This is not a innocent drug as if there are any. Our ancestors live with no modern medication and seemed to be able to take care of themselves. My advice is to try any and everything you can homeopathic so you don’t get caught in the pharmaceutical cycle. It is very hard to break away from. Best of luck to all that have such problems. I have been taking Lyrica for approximately one year – 100mg at bedtime. Recently, this has increased to 2X daily – morning & night- at 100mg each. Once the daytime dosage was added, I noticed an incredible surge in the weight gain in my stomach-I look pregnant! I have also gained 7 pounds – I was 112 pounds (5 ft tall). The sad thing about all of this is that I’ve been put on Lyrica for atypcial facial pain. I have been dealing with left-side constant, excruciating facial pain that no one seems to be able to find relief. I’ve been on 37 different meds over the four years I’ve been suffering with facial pain. I do not have any neuropathy. I have had rhizotomy surgery at Johns Hopkins hospital last year, which made the pain worse. I have tried reducing my nightime dosage of Lyrica and remove the daytime dosage. This was horrible-I felt awful! I stayed in bed, nauseous, lightheaded, anxious – horrible. I believe Lyrica is responsible for the widespread muscle/joint pain I’m experiencing. The rheumatologist is calling it fibromyalgia and I call it Lyrica-algia! This drug should not be on the market. I’m determined to get off of it..Any suggestions to help me with this atypical facial pain would be welcomed. thank you very much

You never mention Trigeminal Neuralgia by name, but your face pain description sounds like it. I started with fibro and it then moved into my face, first the right, then the left. It is agonizing. The only thing that brought me from non-functioning survival, to a much closer version of the old me, was lyrica. I had lost 140lbs years before, after the birth of my 5th child, after being on solid bed rest for 6 months. The lyrica brought back 60 of it right off the bat. The “fibro fog” is a real struggle, but the issues with thinking on lyrica are truly scary. I wish I was dependent on it to live my life, but I have scraped and clawed my way back from the worst period in my life in 2012. I pray constantly that they find a cure or for chronic pain sufferers. I wish all of you well.

There are anti convulsion meds that may help. Tegretal has helped. Dilantin is the second preferred as far as i know. Instead of heat, i use ice packs and eat more ice cream than i should. I can’t bite into anything much. So i mince my food into small bites that i gingerly put in with a coaktail fork. Most foods are still a big NO. Another thing that helps is extra strengh Tyelenol taken 3 times a day. I sometimes have to wait until it helps before even trying to eat. Good luck. Hope this will help you.

I took Lyrica for less than 2 months ( replacing gabapentin) for numbness in my feet. After experiencing loss of strength/flexibility in my left arm/hand – I stopped taking Lyrica and began taking Gabapentin again. I’m a very active 74 year old and love golf. I now have experienced a tibialis tendon rupture on my left side – I think Lyrica caused this event. Have you ever heard of this connection?
