man in a chair wearing neutral colored pantyhose for leg pain or fatigue

Q. I’ve been wearing pantyhose every day for a while now to eliminate leg fatigue and help with varicose veins. I stand all day at work in a restaurant and find this tactic works great.

I wear L’eggs Sheer Energy Active Support Leg Nude Queen size; I am 5′ 10″ and 200 pounds and they fit me perfectly. I get several weeks’ wear out of each.

I wear them under my uniform pants during the day and under shorts at other times. No one seems to notice, or if they do they don’t mention it. The nude color just looks like I have tanned legs. Other colors are a little too false looking.

My wife, my family and my doctor all approve. Other guys may want to try this.

A. You are not the first man to tell us that support pantyhose help keep their legs from getting tired. Years ago we heard from a reader:

“I suffer from chronic leg pain. My doctors have tested me and all they can say is that it might be due to nerve damage. They suggest support hose.

“I bought some medical support hose but they are very expensive. I thought I could save money with regular support pantyhose.

“It feels strange to wear them but they really help my legs feel much better. Is it a problem to wear women’s pantyhose?”

We assured him the only problem would be if he and his wife were trying to conceive. Pantyhose might raise the temperature of the testicles and reduce sperm count. This is not terribly likely, however.

Pantyhose for Flying

MSR chimed in:

“I have worn compression pantyhose on long distance flights to Australia many times and they are very effective.  They are difficult to put on, especially getting them over the foot area. As a male I am not used to putting on full length hosiery although it is second nature to most women – but – like anything else that is worth doing – there is a price to pay.

“Long flights used to be difficult ,as I get very fidgety legs to the point where it would drive me nuts sitting in one place even for a short period of time. On a 15 hour flight from LA to Sydney it is purgatory. My wife had never had this problem so (at her suggestion) I ordered a pair of full length hosiery.

“I did feel a bit self-conscious wearing a garment designed for a woman, but what a difference!  I had tried support socks before but the full length garment (pantyhose) are much much more effective. So much more support over the entire leg.

“I never ever go on any flight without my support pantyhose and I wear them just about every day. They are invigorating and the best thing for both male and female legs. I simply do not understand why these are marketed only to women.

“They fit me perfectly well and are very comfortable although I was careful to ensure that I got the right size. At the end of a long day or a long flight I really thank the guy or gal that invented them. The support is well worth the effort in getting them on whether you are a man or a woman.”

I wear all kinds of pantyhose in the winter months under my pants. They are comfortable. Most of the time I don’t even feel them on and they keep my legs nice and warm. I also wear them to bed. I started doing this in my 30s and my wife questioned it first but I never gave in, and kept wearing them. I am now in my 60s and she doesn’t care .I also wear suntan thi-highs during the summer months under my shorts, of course you need to shave your legs or it will look silly. I have been doing this for many years now and even wear them with runs not knowing and I haven’t got any strange looks yet.Sometimes I wish someone would comment. The benefits are well worth it ..My legs are warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, they don’t sweat.

I started to wear pantyhose because of my heart. I wear them with shorts, I like them, so, what do other people say, not much, they do look, even if the say no. I get a smile from some people, are they women underwear, yes, are they sexy, yes, What can I tell you, wear them, you will like them, men like them and women like them, but women had them for so long they like to not wear anything. Men like sexy things, you got it, go for it.

I wear them, and what a difference they make. I have worn panty hose for three years now for knee problems, vein problems, and they hold my hernia in. My doctor told me to get them so my wife picks them up for me but now I buy them online for half price.

To me, firm support tights have made an amazing difference. For 30 years I slept with a pillow between my legs. Since 6 years ago I began wearing firm support tights. I have had no inflammation in my knees, and I don’t use a pillow any more. I can walk with no difficulties. I have from time to time tested to see if it was really the support tights which did the difference, and it was. My knees and lower legs immediately began to hurt without them so I have no doubt that support tights help. I wear them 24/7 – mostly natural tan color. If the size fits you they are really comfortable, and of course my legs look much better. I am now 71 years old. I have recommended firm support tights more than once to male friends.

I had varicose veins in my legs for many years that went undiagnosed for at least 30 years. After moving to AZ, my leg issues got so bad that I had to seek help. I had to have veins stripped out of my left leg. Believe me it was no picnic. (right one wasn’t as bad and didn’t need to be stripped.

After the surgery, the my doctor informed me that I need wear support hosiery, and when we asked about what kind, he suggested a name brand of firm support hose. Wife and I went shopping for several pair of tan hose, and I started to wear that day. Since I started with tan hose, I stuck with those for quite a while. I gradually started to wear different shades of hose. My favorite was black, and it still is.

I only wore under jeans or slacks as I didn’t want to be laughed at. I had been wearing shorts most of the time even to work. After the operation, I went back to jeans and they sure got hot in no time, my wife suggested I go back to shorts as much as I wanted. It took me a while to get up the nerve to go back into shorts but I eventually did so. This was over 25 years ago now and I’m retired now and I have to wear Medical Grade hose now. I still wear to this day any place I want without any issues.

So if you are told that you need support hose, JUST DO IT and don’t be ashamed of it. You are only doing yourself harm if you don’t. I have heard that there are many men who just wear pantyhose because they like the feel, I say JUST DO IT your legs will thank you later on in life.

Because of my long term CVI, I treat my condition with three different levels of compression on various days from 8-15 mmHg, to 15-20 mmHg to 20-30 mmHg; depending on my pain level, my swelling and my planned activity. My doctors have told me to “stop” wearing the knee highs, and start wearing {or actually go back to} thigh high stockings, as I needed the higher support.

Within days of following their advice I noticed a world of difference, and will not be having surgery {or at least for now}. BUT, I noticed that many times the thigh highs do not like to stay up, and under most conditions pantyhose stay in place much better. So I started wearing a combination of thigh highs and pantyhose, and the various compressions depending on various factors. And for comfort and effectiveness, I also use a combination of three different brands.

I have found Futuro Energizing Ultra Sheer Pantyhose 8-15 mmHg (Brief Cut) to be extremely comfortable when I need the light 8-15 weight support because they offer excellent support, while being much cooler than the unisex brands, because of being very sheer and having a feeling of hardly being on . They can also be worn with shorts without being noticed; which is a huge help as wearing any hose under jeans or pants is terribly hot. If men’s fashions would have kept up to women’s, these hose would have probably been perfect with a skirt.

When needing that next level of support, but also desiring the ability to venture out of jeans and pants into shorts; I have found TRUFORM Women’s LITES 15-20 mmHg Pantyhose to be extremely comfortable because they offer excellent support, while being slightly cooler because of being more sheer than some of the unisex brands, and because of the generous panty and wide waist band, providing more room and reducing any roll. They can be worn with shorts without being noticed, which is much cooler than the discomfort and heat of wearing any hose under jeans or pants.

I also wear Jobst Relief 15-20 mmHg Closed Toe Thigh Highs with Silicone Top Band at this level of comfort need; finding these extremely comfortable and reasonable in price. With the Silicone Top Band, they do stay up pretty well, especially when new; however, they do have a tendency to work their way down, and if you’re in an area that you can not pull them up, it can become very embarrassing and irritating; so depending on the circumstances, I may opt for one of my pantyhose instead.

I have found Jobst Relief 20-30 mmHg Closed Toe Pantyhose to be extremely comfortable when I need the extra support of the 20-30 mmHg weight hose because they offer excellent support, while being a very comfortable material, and very easy to get on.

I encourage everyone with leg and vein issues to purchase and wear support hose regularly; whether it be thigh high or pantyhose. And do NOT be ashamed of it, nor hide it. It is your health. They can prevent blood clots, serious vein problems, critical surgeries, so much leg and foot pain, and even death. They are articles of clothing, and nothing more; and they are made for men and women, and worn by men and women, even though they are mainly packaged for women. The days and years of them being sex items or symbols are long, long over. You have not seen girls or young ladies, or as far as that goes even middle aged ladies wearing pantyhose or stockings in years; unless it is for health reasons. I am willing to bet, today there are more men wearing stockings and pantyhose than women; they just don’t have the comfort of wearing them with the coolness of something like a skirt or dress. So go for your health and wear your hose openly and freely – stay alive and healthy.

My VA doctor prescribed Medical Compression Hose 20-30hmhg. I thought; great, I wear shorts most of the year as I get hot real easy. So I bought Nurse Mates Medical Support Pantyhose in the color beige and I have been wearing them in public now for about 3 months, and only a couple of people have noticed. If anyone else has they have not said anything to me. I have gotten so used to wearing them that I do not feel right if I do not have them on. I am supposed to go to the VA to pick up hose they are providing me.

If you need to wear them you need to go ahead and wear them. This is about your health. Do not let what someone else thinks put you and your health in harm. I have to wear mine to prevent blood clots and frankly my wife really likes them. She enjoys buying them for me. The people at my church have been supportive and there are some others in my church that wear them.

I guess one of the things that made this easier for me than for other men is that I walk several miles per month and wear running tights to keep my muscles warm. I also wear cycling pants, which are basically the same as the running tights but with a zipper at the bottom of the legs to make it easy to remove on the side of the road as the temperature rises, making wearing them too hot.

Take care of your health, wear them if you are ordered by your doctor or if they make your legs feel better.

I do not think any person, man or woman should hesitate from wearing “support” pantyhose if they have leg or foot pain or swelling. Start it as soon as you start having any signs of issues “before” you start having serious problems. They really work, especially if you stand in one spot for long periods or sit for long periods – anything where you can’t get your legs moving to get your legs having your veins and arteries working for themselves. You do “NOT” want to end up with “CVI” or worse.

Remember these pantyhose is an article of “clothing”, and it serves a very definite health “purpose”. It is no longer the sex item it used to be years ago, because women no longer wear them the way they used to; in fact most women today hate pantyhose and do not wear them. It is a shame that even many of the medical support pantyhose for men and women are packaged for women, but say on the information for them that they are for both men and women.

Because of several circulation problems that I have had in my legs for decades, I have worn pantyhose on and off for decades starting back when women still wore pantyhose daily for work and other things. And because pantyhose were still so popular with women as “a sex symbol”, I was embarrassed to wear them, so hid the fact that I wore them, and did not wear them as often as I should have. As a result, my leg issues got worse, and now I must wear them daily, and to get the true effect, must wear the thicker, warmer medical grade, even on the hottest days. But they work, and work very well, so I wear them – some times pantyhose – sometimes thigh high; but I wear them, because I do not want to lose my legs. And I do not try to hide it anymore, and when it is hot, I wear them with shorts to try being a little more comfortable.

Decided to try this out after thinking it was all a gag, but it works so well I have stopped taking pain medication. I only wear them to bed at night and initially was hard to get over the itch and how warm they made me under the covers. Started wearing the open crotch ones so the boys can be free, and this gives me relief from some major discomfort issues.

Don’t have the nerve to wear them during the day, but pretty sure it would help the leg pain if I did.
Took my wife some time to get used to this at night, but if it works so be it. Now it is just normal night time wear.

I have recently been prescribed 30-40 mmHG pantyhose because of venous insufficiency and I hate them. However, I would not want to go without them, as my legs feel great – no more aching, swelling, or heaviness.

For me they seem to like to bunch up behind my knees so they get uncomfortable. They also pull on my leg hair. They do seem very warm, so I am worried about making it through the summer – any tips for keeping cool?

I wear them every day, L’eggs Sheer Energy sheer to waist support. I lost my Femoral artery in my right leg during a game of flag football, my cousin who is 6ft 2 in and 300lbs, tackled me and the weight twisted my whole leg, I was in pain for some time and I also was a body builder doing squats, which made it worse, I didn’t feel anything for awhile, then all the pain and inflammation of the vein forced me to have surgery, the surgeon took out the Femoral and the whole major vein, it burst upon surgery.

Now, the blood has to find another way back to the heart, so it takes the long way back, thus I have A-fib. The pantyhose is used as a support for my leg and it does a great job, allowing the blood to flow smoothly and the legs are also massaged too. I admit I sleep with them on for ease of blood flow. Haven’t had a problem since.

Some people understand and are acceptable of this. I wear them every day under my pants and trousers. I also have had 2 hernia surgeries one at a time 1 year apart each and the pantyhose gives support in the hernia area, does a good job at supporting and preventing it from happening again, when I have to lift something. I wear them on the job as well and they DO KEEP YOUR LEGS WARM during winter. Better than long johns.

Just a few additional thoughts on my original post on support pantyhose for men. For many years I only wore them for long distance flights. After a flight I did not have that heavy feeling in my legs so I wear them most days now whatever I am doing. Men may find them very useful when driving…especially for long distances. I have tried the support socks but support along the whole leg including the thigh area is much more beneficial…at least that is my experience. Mostly I wear pantyhose under long pants – even after all these years I am still self conscious wearing a “women’s” garment so feel obliged to cover them up. Although this summer I did wear them with shorts and (very surprisingly) received very nice compliments from some young ladies who liked the look. At my wife’s suggestion I do have my legs waxed nowadays (they are going gray and with half white and half black leg hairs – it looks ridiculous) and I have found that my hosiery does not slide down nearly as much. I have worn most brands, and they are all comfortable. As noted above, if you are looking to start a family it may be beneficial to leave them off as reduced sperm count can be a result of keeping the testes too warm. But several very healthy kids later it did not seem to affect me much.

I understand that many men will feel reluctant to wear a garment traditionally marketed for women but that has all changed in the last 10 years, and most suppliers recognize that anyone with two legs can benefit from wearing them….even non-support pantyhose are being targeted at men these days. They are certainly much nicer to wear than long johns. I have yet to understand why manufacturers seem to think this is only a women’s item of clothing and exclude half of he population. I guess old attitudes die hard don’t they?

If you want to avoid spider veins and worse, varicose veins in your legs, get a pair of support pantyhose or two, and wear them daily. It has certainly been a great benefit to me. I have no spider veins at all and my legs feel as good now as they did when I was 20. I also have no joint pain at all which, now that I am approaching 70, I find totally amazing. For me support pantyhose are THE best thing since sliced bread. Be sure to get the size that fits you. Generally, if they are women’s get a size larger than the chart shows.

I recently (6 months ago) hurt my lower back with a herniated disc, while turfing our backyard. I have suffered great pain, especially with the femoral nerve of the right leg being grabbed. My wife gave me a pair of her Razzmatazz stockings to try on – and while I was dubious about it, with no other option they helped cut the pain down. I found the legs held the nerve down from twitching /spasming as much. From there she bought me some tights and other generic pantyhose.

They did a great job in keeping my legs and lower back warm. Though the generic brands didn’t do much else. One time when I was in agony, we went to the local Kmart with the aim of buying a corset/girdle, skins or other compression clothing. Men or women’s I was past caring.

All the men compression/active wear/sports, shorts, trunks and pants rode on my hip, touching the actual vertebra that was causing the problem. There was a pair of women compression tights that went higher – but they didn’t have my right size.

So from there we went to the ladies section. The girdles were either too lacy, small, or had the shoulder straps which I didn’t want. So we moved again to the stocking / tights rack. She went through them all, with me standing there, talking about what size would and wouldn’t fit. We eventually found a pair of “Control support for hips, bum and legs” which we tried on.

Yes, they held me tight, supported my back, and brought about much relief. I wear them around the house, or under long jeans when we have gone out. Though, my chiro tells me to take them off when sleeping. The past few weeks have been stinking hot, and so on a few occasions I have worn them under my shorts.

My wife laughs and teases me about my lovely legs when I wear black stockings, and I hammed it up when she first got me black sheer with my raising my foot and sliding it down the hall door way. But, she prefers me to wear the tan/bone colored ones when out.

When we spoke about it, I said, if I’m going to wear them, I’m going to commit fully to wearing them. And so we have gone shopping, to dinner, and bowling while wearing shorts. Though, to avoid headaches I don’t wear them with shorts when visiting my mother..(Sadly she is a gossip) And I won’t wear them to church under shorts.

We pay $5 for one certain pair, and $7 for another pack, – both come in packs of 2.

I have also salvaged a number of pairs which are ruined, by cutting the legs off at the knee. While they don’t support my legs as much, they do continue to provide needed assistance to my back / thighs and is another option to wear with shorts, or just lounging around the home.

When a pair of 70 denier tights lost their elasticity and no longer supported my back, I filled the foot with rice, and made it into a heat pack. Works fantastic.

I’m a straight married male with an adult child in my 50’s. I have loved the feel of nylons since I was 10.

However after 2 knee replacement surgeries and edema, circulation issues and varicose veins, I wear compression thigh high stockings and pantyhose 15-20 mhg gradient daily. Been wearing for 2 years now. Sometimes as an alternative, I wear Solidea compression shorts or mens underwear at same gradient with knee high socks. However they are not as effective at reducing the swelling as the stockings and pantyhose. They help tremendously, especially when traveling, sitting long periods at a time or standing all the time. Also give warmth. I wear under trousers or jeans. Only wear with shorts in evenings on a limited basis. Men wore fill length hosiery for centuries before women, even though the hose were cotton or wool, not nylon. This garment should be gender neutral. Good article. Thanks.

I started wearing pantyhose in 1987 for fetishes reasons but in the past 10 plus years I have been relieved of the pain, fatigue and restless legs wearing them about 24/7. I also have vericose veins in mu right leg that aches and itches, the pantyhose helps with that.
Of the past 10 years I went from construction worker to truck driver, both extremes, prolong standing, working to long periods of sitting. I benefitted thru it all with pantyhose on. I wear shorts everyday, no one notices, those that do say nothing. So don’t be afraid to wear shorts, I wear skin tone sheer pantyhose, full support.

I have restless leg syndrome and I’ve found that wearing tights to bed helps with it. I drive a large delivery truck for a living and I’m in and out of the truck all day and sometimes I walk long distances. At the end of the day my legs and feet are achy and my RLS is worse after work. My tights of choice are the George brand from Walmart. I’m 6’5 so finding tights that fit well is difficult. The George brand recently started making their tights up to size 5 and they’re perfect. They have a flat seam so that makes them even more comfortable. Wife doesn’t know I wear them to bed but knows I wear them. She has RLS too but hates tights. I hope to one day have her wear them to bed just once and decide from there.

I am a 40 year old male, and have worn pantyhose and tights for well over half of my life. I started wearing for fetish, but discovered as I have aged that the medical reasons for wearing them definitely provide a benefit. I have worked on my feet for all of my life, and it is quite noticeable when I don’t wear at least a light support pantyhose. My lower legs and ankles become riddled with spider veins, and I notice that my legs tire easier as well.
I do take care of my legs, shaving and keeping them moisturized, and also keeping my feet smooth and toenails trimmed and filed. This helps greatly in making your hosiery last longer. Don’t buy the cheapo brand, spend five or six dollars and buy some L’eggs, my favorites are the medium support and active support leg. I am 6’0 and 195, so their queen size is a great fit for me.
I used to hide my hose under jeans, limiting my wearing to days when it wasn’t too hot. I have come to realize that it doesn’t matter what I wear, as it is just an article of clothing and this particular one is of benefit to me.

I read this a few months ago. I am morbidly obese and had several episodes of cellulitis in my legs. Whilst the infections cleared, my lower legs were still very swollen and I coujd feel fluid retention. The nurse at my doctors said that support tights would help but proper compression ones cost a lot of money and if I was man enough- just order support tights on the Internet. I’m gay in a relationship so it’s not a big issue for us. I ordered glamory for men which are a bit tight- I have child bearing hips- but I now use the black New York lady support tights 40 or 70 denier.

After 24 hours I could see and feel the difference. My legs feel alive and the swelling decreasing and controlled. I topped using them thinking it was sorted but then watched the swelling return. So I now wear support tights all the time- sleep in them as well as under my suit at work. And my legs don’t swell and feel better.
There can’t be many men who have a pantyhose section in their underwear draw.

All though I am Transgender “I discovered this as a little kid” anyway I noticed that pantyhose and tights have their advantages. They can protect your legs from multiple types of medical issues. They also can keep you warm in the winter and summer depending on the air conditioning setting in the building you’re in.

Tights/ pantyhose was invented by some monk for men and men wore them for over 200 yrs before they became a gender specific garment. If you need them for medical problems or you just like them I say have at them. Just learn to shave they look and feel better.

Been riding my bike and working out a lot but , after pulling muscles in my leg from working out too hard I need support. I started wearing wife’s support pantyhose since men’s support hose looked to be expensive. I can honestly say that they are great, leg soreness and fatigue is so much better, they make a big difference. Support and control top to seem to be the key, leggs medium support are ok, looking to move to Hanes Alive full support.

Wearing them while biking works well, some sites state that 10% improvement can be gained by compression tights. I believe it.

Haven’t gone out wearing them with anything but long pants or bike pants when working out. I should not care what others think as long as they keep the soreness away?

Excellent write up! I wear both medical grade 20-30 mmHg compression hosiery as well as lighter grade regular support hose depending on how my legs feel. I have aching and heavy feeling legs as the day goes on from circulation problems and varicose veins without wearing them. They really work and men should not hesitate to give them a try. Make sure you discuss it with your doctor first.

Supposedly, compression hose work because of the compression. However, I think that warmer legs help with mild swelling and aching, too. That would explain why so many people (including myself) get relief by wearing non-medical support pantyhose. I spend a great deal of time working at a computer, and they really help.

I started wearing compression hose for medical reasons, I would wake up in the evening with twitching in my legs and it felt like bugs crawling under my skin. Some times it would lead up to leg cramps. I have been wearing them for about 2 months now and I haven’t experience these symptoms since, just a slight twitch hear and there. I started to wear them out in the cold weather and noticed how great they are keeping my legs warm, so much better than the long johns as far as bulk goes. I cant understand why more men have not tried them it’s really not a fetish but a medical thing or even a comfort. I heard hunters wear them and even football players wear them in the cold.

Are pantyhose comfortable for a man to wear? Is it necessary to shave your legs for a proper fit?

I have prescription from my family doctor for Sigvaris 842M 20-30mmHg compression pantyhose. I wear them everyday because of tired aching legs. Sigvaris doesn’t actually make pantyhose for men but I find the pantyhose are the best fit and better then the thigh high stockings.

Shaving your legs is a personal choice. I do shave, I have found that they stay up better. Leg hair acts like a lubricant and you pantyhose will slide down your legs. Using a cream or lotion on you legs helps to reduce them from sliding. Shaving for me is my first choice. Wearing sheer pantyhose the hair looks ugly underneath when wearing shorts.

I don’t, because I found it doesn’t affect fit (only looks) I think the hair visible thru the pantyhose looks cool. Come on, if you’re a man and wearing pantyhose, man up and let the leg hair show thru the pantyhose. If anyone cares, it’s not my problem. If you’re worried about it, wear tights instead that hide the hair. Shaving is too much of a pain anyway, as I have a beard. Why would I shave my legs and keep my beard?

Men wearing hose used to be perfectly normal – expected, even, at one point in history. Sad that such stigma is attached to certain assumed “gender specific” things nowadays, if/when real benefit can be had for any/everyone.

All I can say is if they feel as good on a guy as they do on me, more power to him. But I still do not know WHY they feel so darn good.

I could only speak for myself about how pantyhose feel on a man, absolutely awesome. Why? Probably the smooth texture of the nylon and how it integrates into the skin.
      Many more reasons too…
      Amazing!

He probably needs or can take Co.Q10 for energy. At least it helps my energy and protects my heart. I would like some ideas on this. Am I doing the right thing?
