Q. When you wrote about alternatives to Crestor for lowering cholesterol, you failed to mention mine: oat bran. For about 10 years I've been eating 1/2 cup of oat bran every day.

I make it into a loaf using a bread maker. The recipe is on any box of Quaker oat bran, but I add 1 cup of raisins. The 2-cup loaf is cut into 12 pieces and lasts four days. My cholesterol went from 210 to 160 in a fairly short time and has remained there ever since.

A. Oat bran is rich in soluble fiber and can help lower total cholesterol (Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, March, 1999). It takes quite a bit of oat bran daily to make a significant difference. We applaud you for finding a palatable way to consume this much oat bran.

Can you post the muffin recipe? I’ve lost mine – I think it was for fruity oat bran muffins, with applesauce as one of the ingredients.
    Thanks!!

I used to eat 3 small home made oat bran muffins every day for my cholesterol- it did the trick! But now, I get heart burn when I eat oat bran- I do not know what to do to dilute the oat bran.

For a whole range of muffin recipes get a copy of The 8 week Cholesterol cure by Robert E. Kowalski. He has managed to make these using less oil/fat. Admitted the book was printed in 1987 but the recipes are all good and variable for a variety the book has medical foreword and ideal for US readers since he lives in S California and the foods he mentioned are mostly American and not generally met in Europe. The ISBN is 0-06-015613-9or you may get a copy from your local library

Try this recipe – uses inexpensive bulk oat bran instead of the more expensive name-brand cereal:
    Spiced Oat Bran Loaf (fat-free)
    2 c. oat bran (bulk)
    1 c. + 3 TB water
    2 TB ground flaxseed, divided
    ½ c. sugar
    ½ tsp salt
    ½ tsp ground ginger
    ½ tsp cinnamon
    ¼ tsp nutmeg
    1-2 TB molasses
    1 TB baking powder
    Vegetable oil spray
    1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
    2. Oil the baking pan(s). (Use more than one if small.)
    3. Mix 1 TB ground flaxseed with 3 TB water. Let sit for several minutes. (simulates egg)
    4. Mix together all ingredients (including ground flaxseed /water mixture) except baking powder. Stir well.
    5. Add baking powder and stir well for 30 seconds.
    6. Pour mixture into greased loaf pan(s).
    7. Bake for 30-40 min, or until a knife or probe inserted in middle comes out clean.
    8. Eat a thick slice daily.

I make oat bran bread in the breadmaker. Just substitute 1/2 cup oat bran for 1/2 cup flour in your regular recipe.

I lowered my cholesterol by 7 points in eating oat bran as a cereal and in oat bran muffins, got the recipe from either a Arrowhead Mills oat bran box or Hodgson Mills, can’t remember which. The recipe calls for Flax Seed Meal thereby replacing fat in the recipe. I grate carrots and an apple into the mix. I don’t eat as much oat bran because of the sugar content of all grains. Since cutting back on oat bran I’ve began to lose the belly fat I accumulated by eating too many carbs and sweets. I didn’t know grains turned to sugar, sugar seems to affect my LDL more than anything else. So, I got good and bad results from eating oat bran.

The muffins work just as well. I used them years ago to go from cholesterol of 290 down to 210. I now eat oatmeal and take Metamucil every day and my cholesterol is down to 140.

I would like to make the loaf with Quaker oat bran but can’t find it in my grocery store. Can you print the recipe so I can use a different brand?

I looked for the recipe on the back of the Quaker Oat Bran box also and it was for muffins. Can someone please post the original recipe. The reader said she used her bread maker and made it into a loaf.

I couldn’t find the recipe either. I even looked on the Quaker Oat website. If the person who sent the advice would send the oat bran bread maker recipe, it would be greatly appreciated.

Great suggestion. I couldn’t find the recipe on the Quaker oat ban box that I bought. It had a recipe for muffins. Can you help?
