Q. It has been seven weeks since I had my annual flu shot, and my arm is still sore at the injection site.
I do not think I have a Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration (SIRVA) from having the vaccine injected into the wrong area. Nonetheless, the shoulder feels like I received the shot two days ago.
There appears to be anecdotal information that the new quad vaccine has left many recipients with sore arms for an extended period. Have you read any reports that this sore arm issue is widespread this year?
A. Anecdotal reports online suggest that other people have also experienced prolonged soreness after getting a flu shot.
The quadrivalent vaccine is intended to protect people against four different strains of influenza virus. Roughly half the flu shots administered this year are quadrivalent, so perhaps that accounts for the sore arms.
SIRVA
You mentioned SIRVA, shoulder pain and limited range of motion that comes on suddenly after a vaccination. It is believed to be due to an injury to the tendons, ligaments or bursa of the shoulder from a badly aimed needle.
Adverse reactions to flu vaccines are, unfortunately, not well studied (JAMA Internal Medicine, June 10, 2013). That makes it hard for people to weigh the benefits against the risks. This year’s flu shot does not protect people well from the most prevalent and severe flu virus, H3N2, although public health officials have urged them to use the immunization to protect against less common strains of influenza.
We are trying to get some idea of this year’s influenza vaccine side effects. Have you experienced any complications or symptoms after getting a flu shot. Please share your story below in the “What Do Your Think” section and thanks.

I got the flu shot from a chain pharmacy on November 14th. My shoulder is still incredibly sore. This year’s flu shot hurt quite a bit more than last year’s. It was placed higher up on my arm than last year. I’m not sure if any of this has anything to do with the residual pain, just mentioning everything pertinent.

2020 flu shot. I still have a sore arm from the flu vaccine, and I believe I had the following side effects. The sore arm has been over 3 weeks. I had noticeable shedding of the hair on my head. I had a reaction: I was weak and slightly disoriented and over all did not feel good. That was 3 days after the shot. I had a similar episode with the 2018 flu shot but the reaction was worse. I was very disoriented and wobbling when I walked. I went to sleep and then I was OK. I may not get the next one. I am 73 years old.

I got the flu shot from a big-name chain pharmacy in October of 2018. A few weeks after I learned that there were issues with the vaccinations. I saw my family doctor, and he asked if I would like to go to physical therapy. I tried it for 3 months once a week, and it does not help. The pain will sometimes come and go. A stabbing pain. I have limited use of my left arm so the shot was administered in the right arm. Now I have limited use of both arms with pain. How long will this last? Is there any treatment?

I got a flu shot 7 weeks ago. I have soreness in my bicep and forearm. I thought that physical therapy would help, but I have gone 3 times now and my arm is no better. My physical therapist says she can feel where my muscle is too tight, but my arm is no better. The pain is not in one location. I would describe it as an ache in the bicep and forearm area.

I had my flu shot 2 weeks ago and I’m still having pain at the injection site. This seems to be happening to quite a few people this year. Perhaps it is the strain of the flu shot or where it was injected – my upper right arm near the shoulder. I will get the shot next year as I work with children, but I’m not too thrilled about this year’s shot.

I had the flu shot about three weeks ago at a well known pharmacy. I am having pain in my arm, and I have a slight black and blue color at the injection site. I noticed when she injected my arm she did so below where they normally inject. Feeling a lot of muscle pain there that is worse when I move it too much. I am taking Motrin and using a heating pad during the day. I will go back tomorrow and speak with the pharmacist so it is documented, but will also see my doctor this week.

I had flu jab right upper arm muscle 7 weeks ago. Suddenly out of nowhere in the last few days have had awful pain in right upper arm right where I had the shot. Can’t turn over in bed, very sore to the touch. Odd place and area to hurt so much. It can only be attributed to the flu shot site. Young girl administered it on a Saturday flu clinic. Never experienced such a pain in this area post flu shot and this from an old bird experiencing childbirth and breast cancer. Trust me. Something is very odd here.

I had the quad flu shot 8 weeks ago. Due to several bouts of pneumonia when I was younger, I have been getting the shot for many years. I noticed the day after the shot that my upper arm was much sorer than is usual. It’s been 8 weeks and the pain is still there, worse at night, and bad enough to wake me up.
I am no stranger to needles. I have b12 and iron shots on a regular basis, but none have ever caused pain like this.

I have had the flu vaccination every year for a number of years now, administered by my local pharmacist. The pain and itching normally subsides within a couple of days. This year a nurse at the GP surgery administered it, about 3 weeks ago. The itching has gone but the pain persists.

I too had the flu jab a month ago and it didn’t hurt at at the time but has got progressively more painful over the 4 weeks my arm is tender all the time and if touched extremely sore to the point that I have considered seeing the doctor just wonder how long it will last … U.K.

Had my first shot last year and pain in the shoulder. It lasted 3 or 4 days and interrupted my sleep at night. This year I’m into 2 weeks so far, and even worse pain is keeping me awake again. I can only move my arm so far and put little weight on it. Last night used cold compress at the site and seemed to help some. Am not getting a shot next year because of these two experiences. Am hoping they come forth with the patch that is in trial right now. The shot was way too high on the shoulder, and I’m aware they need to get it into that muscle but it felt, both years, like it was hitting bone. I’m also arthritic throughout my body, and perhaps the shot irritates it. I notice my opposite arthritic shoulder is swollen and bothering me, though nothing like my flu shot shoulder. Friends who received the hot have no complications.

About 10 weeks ago, I had my annual flu shot. As it was being administered, I noticed that the nurse injected me mid-arm, instead of in my shoulder’s upper deltoid muscle. The pain has never abated. And if that weren’t bad enough, I’m sitting here, typing while enjoying a case of the flu!
Though it was important in the past for me to take the vaccine, (I’m a retired physician) I will reconsider my decision to have the shot this fall. It’s important to make sure the person injecting you puts the needle in the upper portion of the deltoid muscle. (Google for a picture of the area.)

I got the flu shot two weeks ago. The pain in my left deltoid muscle has increasingly worsened. At this point, I cannot lift my arm, get dressed, or undertake any movement where my upper left deltoid is needed without shooting pain. The pain also wakes me up at night. I have gotten the flu shot for decades and never experienced anything like this. I am 100% sure it is the vaccine causing the pain. Advil helps somewhat. I am a musician and cannot play my instrument with this condition. After reading other comments, I am horrified that the pain could persist for months.

I had the dose for 65 and older on 11-23-17. My arm was sore within 3 hrs, and to date, 12-25, still is very sore and seems more so at night. Have been taking tylenol. Can’t take Advil. It helps very little. I have to have help to lift my arm at times. Never had a reaction before. Not sure I’ll get a flu shot again.

I was reluctant to receive the Flu shot because during physical therapy I met a nurse who had received a flu and she was unable to use her arm from an injury due to the shot. I was convinced by my doctor that I needed the shot since I work in the public sector. I decided to take her advice and received the shot, that was on Monday 11.20.17. Three days later I awaken to my arm warm, tight, sore, and itching.
This was the very thing that I thought would happen.
How long will this pain linger?
What should I do?

I received the flu shot 3 wks ago today (11-20-17) at a big-name pharmacy. I started having soreness a few days later, which has continued, only worse now than when it first started. At times, the area feels extremely warm, compared to the other arm. I went in and mentioned this to the lady who gave the shot, but she seemed unaware of any other reports. I asked her to document this with my file. She agreed to do this. This has put the fear in me with having any future flu shots.

Hi, I am 26 years old and I just had a baby 6 weeks ago. Before I was released from the hospital, the nurse asked if I wanted to get a FLU shot and I responded yes. The nurse did warn me that my arm will be sore and stiff for the next two days, but I didn’t realize my arm will still be sore and stiff for 6 weeks. Is that normal ?

I am a 69 year old female who has gotten the flu shot for the last 10 years, probably longer. Never have I had any reaction like this. Got it administered at a big-name pharmacy. Very frustrated because I have no strength in the arm, cannot reach back without pain, and also have shooting pain. Called pharmacy and was told to visit my primary doctor, and that it is definitely unusual. My problem is: why should I have to pay for this??? I’m sure I’ll need tests.

I’ve gotten the flu shot for decades, and this is the first time I’ve experienced any arm/shoulder pain beyond the typical 1-2 days. Received this year’s on Sept 23, 2017, and did a lot of driving afterwards over 4 hours, so my arm essentially stayed in one position – on the steering wheel. It’s been 2 weeks and a day, and when I wake up my shoulder/arm is stiff. The motion which is most difficult is picking up a small 4-cup coffee pot and pouring a cup (I need my java), and it’s the 90º angle and the extending which gets me. A dose of ibuprofen loosens it up and allows me to move throughout the day. It’s not severe, so I feel it’ll lessen, but just take its time doing so like any soft tissue injury.

I got my 65+ flu shot September 6, 2017 in my upper back part of right arm close to my shoulder. I expected some soreness for a couple days but now it has been 3 weeks & I am still suffering with arm & shoulder pain where the injection was. I have had to take Aleve off & on both day & night & use a pain patch on my shoulder area near right side of neck several times especially when I can’t sleep. I have gotten the flu shot for at least the last 10 yrs. & the 65+ for last 7 & have never had any lingering pain as I have this time. Next time I will it in my butt! Is there anything I can do to get relief from this other than what I have been doing?

I received my flu shot (senior) in October of 2016. I had a severe stinging pain for the full length of the needle. The pharmacist at Sams thought it was because of the alcohol at the site of the injection. It is now May and the site of the injection is still painful. In addition, I have had severe pain in both shoulder joints which I did not have before the injection. I have not seen a doctor yet but the nurse on call at my health insurance said I should see him just to have it documented.

I have never had a problem till this last shot. Arm is still weak and sore two weeks later. I think it may have been a miss aimed needle by the chemist. Next year I will get the doctor to do it.

I had the flu shot two years ago ,Iam 75 years old and had the shot at my Kroger pharmacy. The pain in my right arm started about an hour later and now two years later the pain goes all the way down into my fingers. They kept telling me it was normal and would go away. No amount of pain medicine helps. It was probably the four strain shot but I don’t, know.
IT seems like some law firm should have picked up on this since it has happened to so many people.

I got a flu and pneumonia shot at the same time in October,2016. It feels at times like I just took the shot yesterday. I didn’t know which of the shots have my arm hurting, but after reading this blog, it must be from the flu shot. I mentioned to my pharmacist and he told me to take ibuprofen, but to no avail. I later had to take a physical, and mentioned it to my gp and she prescibed a muscle relaxer and pain medicine, but again, to no avail.
It is now March 2017 and at times I can’t sleep on my left arm or raise it past my head. While driving at times, holding the steering wheel is a bit painful. I don’t know what they put in the flu shots, but they need to take it out, because I’ve been getting the shot the since early 1970’s and have never had this problem.

I got the flu shot 1/9/2017 – have never had a reaction to the flu shot in years past. (I don’t get them every year.) The days following the flu shot I had stiffness & achy in my arm (as usual) but it continued, lower and lower in my arm and has now (for over 5 weeks) settled in my elbow. I’ve had 2 rounds of antibiotics – nothing. I stretch and massage the site every night, but to no avail. It feels severely bruised and stiff to this day.

I had my flu shot Oct. 6, 2016. To this day I am still experiencing severe pain in that shoulder and loss of mobility. I’ve had 2 cortisone shots, one in the tush and the last one in the shoulder joint. Although it improved the mobility slightly when moving forward and up, I still can’t put my arm back or above shoulder height to the side. If I do it without thinking about it the pain is swift and severe, and my arm just freezes for a minute or so. I think it’s pinching a nerve. Has there been any improvement for any of you after a period of time? I’m beginning to lose hope after this many months.

I’m 26 and had to get the flu shot twice this year for the Army. The first time was when I got deployed for 6 months, which I had normal soreness like anyone else and it went away in days. This last time however was almost 2 months ago and I can no longer get dressed, undressed, turn the steering wheel of a car or carry heavy objects that require me to flex my upper delt area. I’m getting worried that something severe has happened because of the vax and this could ruin my career. I’ve tried massaging it, not sleeping on that side and I’ve even tried not using my arm as much as possible while having sport tape on it thinking it may help but nothing has worked. Anyone have any other ideas??

I am an RN and the yearly influenza vaccine is now mandatory. Three months ago I received my injection in the very upper left deltoid. The next morning I woke up with sharp pain radiating down my arm, into my elbow and forearm. I let is go for a week thinking it was a normal reaction. It was only getting worse, so I went to our Occupational Health. The physician and PA (on the two week follow up) both charted they could not link the pain to the vaccine (I believe because they have little exposure to this happening). Now…three months later I have extreme pain in my arm if I move it wrong. I need help getting dressed, cannot turn the steering wheel, cannot sleep because of the pain, and have increasing weakness. I was told to follow up with my family doctor (whom I already told). I don’t know what to do! Everyone poo poo’s this away…but it is affecting my life and I know it is related to the vaccine! I don’t know what else to do.

I had my flu shot 2 months ago. I’m 69 and have never had an adverse reaction to a flu shot before. The shot hurt which was unusual and, within an hour, I felt poorly. I was lethargic and felt flu-like for about 26 hours, then the achiness went away. HOWEVER, my arm has continued to ache every day since I received the vaccine. I don’t know whether I has a poorly-administered shot or the vaccine itself is problematic. It is enough to make me forego the flu vaccine in 2017!

Joe and Terry,
Why are there two different types of the flu vaccine? Is it my imagination or are the problems with the one for people over 65?
Terry Graedon
There are several different types of flu vaccine. Some have three strains of flu and some have four. Here is a link to CDC’s info: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/keyfacts.htm
One of the vaccines promoted for older adults is high-dose, and that may be responsible for a disproportionate number of problems, but we can’t say for sure. CDC seems to indicate that is a possibility: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/65over.htm

I had a flu shot the last of October – 2016 in my left arm. I could barely move my arm the next day. The muscle in my arm is still painful and I cannot pull a blanket up at night with that arm. I got my annual flu shot about 4 weeks ago and have had pain in my arm ever since. The muscle is so sore and at times the pain goes down below the elbow. It’s very uncomfortable, especially at night when trying to sleep. For the last 3-4 years I’ve had the same lady at Walgreen’s give me the shot and had no problems. I got my flu shot on Dec. 1 and like above comments, immediately felt pain I had not experienced before with a flu shot. Within a short time, pain increased in my arm and the arm continues to be very sore in a 3 inch diameter circle around the injection site. It keeps me awake at night since I cannot find a comfortable position. Movement of my arm causes pain. The pain does not seem to be improving even after forcing myself to move my arm to avoid frozen shoulder. I received my shot at Walgreens and it was Fluad 2016-17 0.5 ml. I too doubt I will ever get another flu shot. This kind of pain is not acceptable.

I had my vaccination over 4 weeks ago. My shoulder still hurts, quite a lot, and I have a limited range of movement.
When I mentioned the possibilty of this being caused by the vaccination to my GP, she said that it would be unrelated and that I must have had some sort of trauma to my shoulder. I am not aware of an injury and it is of parrticular interest as I have been an Orthopaedic Practitioner for over 20 years. Any thoughts please?

I received my flu shot about two weeks ago at the local rite aid because it was highly suggested by my OBGYN because I am pregnant. I have had the flu shot previously but have never experienced pain like this afterwards. My arm is still sore and wakes me up in the middle of the night as my arm and shoulder stiffen up and gets worse as the hours go on. By morning, I am unable to move my arm at all. This has happened every single night since I’ve gotten my flu shot. As I go on through the day and attempt to use my arm, the pain and stiffness do lessen, but this is after hours of being in pain. I will NEVER get the flu shot again. This feels like an actual shoulder injury. Pain like this should not be prolonged from just getting a shot. I had the flu before and I’d rather have the actual virus than wake up to this day in and day out. I do not recommend getting this year’s propagandal flu shot.

I received my flu shot on October 18, 2016 in my left arm by a private insurance approved nurse at my work place. She was well informed and encouraged me to keep my arm moving throughout the day. I felt normal pain at time of the injection. It seemed to fade during the work day as I consciously kept it moving; however, the pain has persisted for 3 weeks. It still feels like someone punched me in the arm, and it’s consistent. Like the others who are experiencing pain following a flu injection, to be exact it was Fluzone High Dose 2016-17 0.5 ML SYR on 11/01/16 at Walgreens, Auburn, WA. I also am experiencing pain in the deltoid muscle. That was 4 days ago. The site of injection is swollen, and tender to the touch. My intention is to keep track of the days that this condition persists. By the way it may be helpful to know that I am 79, female.

I got my flu shot 3 weeks ago. Told the doctor to put it into my right arm because I use that arm for bowling that day (I bowl twice every week) and I thought bowling would help work out any tightness. My arm never hurt at all for about a week. Well then, about a week later, my arm started to hurt around the elbow area for about 7-10 days. Now the pain is spreading down into that arm and top of my hand.

I received high dose flu vaccine a month ago and pain is so bad at night and arm is sore. Nothing helps the pain! I was not told of all these complications. I will never take another flu shot ever! It needs to be taken off the market! The flu would be better. People have actually died from this! I am reporting this reaction to FDC. Anyone have any answers as to what helps the pain And soreness? Thanks

My husband received his flu shot in the left arm and shingles vaccine in the right about 2 weeks ago. Four days ago he began experience tightening of his shoulder and upper back on the right side. He now can barely move his arm and shoulder, and has a large swollen area on his shoulder just above above his shoulder blade. This pain is keeping him awake all night and in excruciating pain night and day. He is taking ibuprofenand ibuprofen plus sleep aid. We are going to the doctor tomorrow. I am not sure if the vaccines are related to what he is experiencing. He had not done any lifting or unusual motin to cause this. The pain radiates from the base of his neck to his hand. If it is just a coincidence it is strange.

I got my flu shot at Walmart pharmacy on Oct. 18. I had just the normal achiness after the injection, but now my whole arm is in pain, especially at night when I go to bed. It aches so bad & I can’t find a position to be able to sleep comfortably. It wakes me throughout the night and the pain is at its worst when I get up in the morning. It’s painful to raise my arm perpendicularly. I am going to the pharmacy today to report these effects, then I am going to see my doctor tomorrow. I have been getting flu shots since the early 90s and I have never experienced anything like this before.

I got my flu shot 3 weeks ago. A little pain at the injection site. It got a little worse the next day. It now feels like someone just punched me in the arm, right at the injection site’ constantly. Does anyone know anything to do for it. I never had this happen before, even from shots in the military.

I received my flu shot 3 weeks ago. I get my flu shot every year and never had a problem until now. I felt pain as soon as it was administered, but thought nothing of it. (Injection site was high, but again didn’t think anything of it). That night I had to take Advil. I also have a high tolerance for pain, but a few people told me the shot hurt this year. The next day I had difficulty moving my arm. It got worse each day. Was living on Advil and Advil PM since it was waking me up constantly during the night also. Finally went to the doctor after 11 days. He put me on steroids. Pain decreased while on the steroids… Finished those 7 days later and pain is still just as bad if not worse than before. Going back to doctor today. This is seriously impacting my day to day life, including work. Hoping to get more answers today.

Located in southeast Wisconsin. Got my flu shot 16 days ago, had severe pain in upper left arm the night of getting injection, so bad I woke up multiple times during the night. Pain is fine now, mainly annoying. Its dull/achy, very similar to a pulled muscle, or the pain after doing heavy workout/lifting. I notice mine first in morning when I put on a shirt, it seems to be worse when I extend my left arm to reach something or abduct my left arm away from body.
I’ve tried massaging arm to see if that would help but no improvement. No other symptoms or aches. Very bizarre, I’ve gotten flu shots for 10 years or longer now and can’t recall ever having pain like this or for this long. If it persists going to see Dr this week. The vaccine I got was made by Afluria, Lot number WTSS407, EXP June 30 2017.

I received the flu shot at my workplace (administered by Walgreens) on 9-26-16. I had on a cap-sleeved t-shirt, I remember vividly the technician asking me to raise my sleeve…I thought “hmmmm…that seems a little higher than usual…but whatever”. Been in excuciating pain ever since! Cant reach behind me…over my head. I can forget putting any resistance on it! I Googled it…all indications point to SIRVA (Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccination Administration)
Will be calling my family physician this week!

I had my flu shot in September, 2016. No problem at the time. But I’ve had pain since then in the spot where the shot was administered. It’s not constant but is very sore when it appears. I have to support that arm by laying it on a pillow or the bed so the pain will lessen and eventually go away.

Got my shot a week ago. Never had any pain at the injection site (higher up closer to my shoulder). Only itching. However, afterwards I developed very sharp pain in my bicep and then it spread to near the inner part of my elbow.
I can’t raise my left arm parallel to the floor locking my elbow without pain that feels like I’ve severely overdid it at the gym (which I have not). Also, it is sore to the touch with even the lightest touch.

I had my flu shot over a month ago. I developed aches and pains and thought I was getting the flu but within two days I had pneumonia. With the antibiotics prescribed, the pneumonia got better but the horrible ache in my left arm never did. I waited thinking I was just still aching from being so sick.
Well, now at this point, the pain has gotten so bad in my left arm that I can’t do simple chores anymore without a horrible shooting pain up and down my arm! I told my husband, “feels like I have pulled a tendon or done some kind of damage,” but I haven’t done anything that would have done that.
It has continued to get worse to the point of picking up a simple coffee cup is excruciating. I can’t sleep at night due to the pain. I am a person that has a high tolerance to pain and I am getting to the point of tears now. A person can take only so much pain all day long every day. The flu shot is the only thing I have come up with that could have caused all this!

I got a flu shot 1 1/2 weeks ago. My arm still hurts at the injection site. Interestingly, my arm did not hurt right after getting the shot. It started about 12 hours after getting the injection.
The pain is not intense. It mostly hurts when I raise my arm. However, when they asked where I wanted the injection, I said my right arm because I play the guitar and use my left arm to move up and down the fingerboard. I have never had this problem before and was sort of laughing. I am not now.

Could it get any worst!?

I got a flu shot at Krogers. It hurt at the injection site and got worse. I went shopping and had to come home it was hurting so bad. Took Tylenol and went to bed. Developed cold with runny nose and sneezing. Been 2 weeks and still feel sore and fatigued. Had flu shot before without these symptoms. No one believes it’s related to the shot. I’m convinced it is related. Also injection was very high (too close to shoulder).

My doctor insists it’s a shoulder injury. Won’t even entertain that it has to do with flu jab. Told him I still wanted him to report it. His answer was 1.000 to a penny. It’s a shoulder injury. He’s never heard of anybody being hurt by a flu jab, as the stuff in it is not live.
So, why did it hurt when injected and why has the pain gotten worse? Been over 7 months now. Just one wrong move and I’m crying in pain, feel sick, can’t sleep, can’t do everyday things without being in pain.

How my gosh, while I hate that you guys are hurting, it is comforting to know I’m not alone. Received my mandatory flu shot back in November and am still experiencing moderate to severe pain from my shoulder joint to my elbow. Difficulty sleeping, dressing and other daily activities. Sometimes it hurts so badly it wakes me up at night. Don’t handle pain meds or steroids very well so I have been living on ibuprofen. Argh. Have seen my PC doc and he is monitoring.

I had the flu jab over 6 weeks ago. I noticed some discomfort shortly afterwards but my arm is still aching, particularly at night. Can’t sleep on that side and it hurts when I turn over. I’ve had the flu jab regularly for a number of years but have never experienced this before. Been to the GP who has prescribed some painkillers and referred me to a physiotherapist but he thinks it is unlikely to be related to the jab! Just hope my arm soon settles down as I’m getting fed up with the discomfort.

I had the flu shot about 2 months ago at the pharmacy that I work in. We got our vaccinations for free because our boss thought it was important for us to all have it considering our professions. The pharmacists were very eager to do shots, they had been dropping hints to the associates for awhile about how crucial it was for everyone to be vaccinated and they kind of guilted me into getting my shot by telling me a young baby or someone with a bad illness like cancer could come in contact with me while I am sick and I could infect them without even knowing it and it could even be fatal considering their conditions. So I said okay I will get the flu shot.
First time ever getting it and I will NOT be getting it again. I am not scared Of needles but the injection was rough and it did hurt quite a bit. The next day I experienced flu like symptoms and I was flat out miserable. The tenderness in my arm went away completely after about 3 days but it was replaced with an agonizing pain in my shoulder bone. Almost 2 months ago and it has not gotten better, I can’t stretch out my arm or lift my arm above my head. I can’t even brush my hair with that arm or try pinning my hair up using that arm. I was fine before the shot and I can’t help but think this is a bad injury due to the flu shot.
The pharmacists may I add were only trained that week to administer shots and at the time I received mine they hadn’t done many. I think the only shots they did were the associates at our pharmacy. I know everyone has a starting point when they are just learning but I truly believe this shot was not done correctly. I have mentioned this to the pharmacist who did my shot and she insists it is not related. I am going to see my family doctor asap about this.

I am experiencing the same soreness in the arm I was injected in this year (October 2015) with the flu shot. I really hope my arm returns back to how it was. Sleeping is much more difficult. Sometimes the pain decreases, but if I raise my arm or touch the spot where the flu shot was administered I feel a instant sharp pain (10/10). I am very annoyed that I’m even having to deal with this pain due to a required flu shot (work in 2 hospitals) because this is terrible.

Same here. It’s been about four weeks now since my flu shot. I do get shots every year and I noticed a lot more pressure during the injection this last time. Very strange to have this much soreness this long after the vaccination. At least I see other people experiencing the same issue so I’ll just give it time.

I had the flu shot five weeks ago at CVS. I also had a pneumonia vaccine in the same arm at the same time. I thought the injections were being given higher in the arm than usual. I was sitting down and the nurse was standing up. I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but apparently, that is not insignificant. My arm still hurts. It’s not too awful during the day but the pain wakes me up at night. It’s pretty intense. Sometimes it helps to take two ibuprofen and sometimes it doesn’t. If the onset of the pain had not immediately followed the shots, I would be concerned. A friend of mine recently experienced the same sort of pain which turned out to be metastatic lung cancer. But with all the anecdotal information out there, I feel certain that mine is because of the shot(s).

I recieved my flu invection october 13th . I have had the flu shot most years for the past ten. After the shot I thought, that hurt a little more then usual, it was at work and I was one of the last to recieve it, about 30 or 40 before me. Thirty minutes later the pain grew, to the bone and when I got home a few hours later I took some advil or something . The next day still very sore. The pain reduced over days but after four weeks, starting to get concerned because I have a steady pain, 24 7, and I did a web search and find about sirva. Its 8 weeks now and the pain is still there. I don, t know if its related but fatigue too. After reading all these post I wonder if is the vaccine and not the injection.

I had flu and pneumococcle jabs Monday morning – and have been off work since.

I had the flu vac as usual in October, 2 months later I am suffering agonising pain in arm muscle. I cannot lift my arm, or reach for things without pain. Received my flu shot Nov. 2nd and my arm has been sore on and off ever since. Sometimes the pain wakes me up at night. And lately the pain is not only in my arm, but also seems to be coming from the back of my neck. This pain is not constant, but it’s not lessening in painfulness! I decided to Google this condition and was quite shocked to see that so many others are experiencing the same side effect.

I thought my arm was just hurting from carting around my 1 1/2 year old. That was until she touched the injection site when she moved and I felt like someone knuckle-punched me! It’s only been 2 days, so I hope this doesn’t last. But it’s excruciating to lift my arm and I feel like I just lifted a 200lb weight after having never worked out. I also have a huge knot under the injection site….weird…my whole arm hurts all the way into my shoulder and down into my fingers.

Wow, I thought it was just me! My flu shot was administered in October and I immediately thought “wow I didn’t even feel the needle must be because she injected higher up my arm than usual”. I assumed the stiffness came on much quicker because of the injection location however, I am still experiencing discomfort. My arm bothers me mostly at the end of the day, when I sleep, and when I raise my arm. I’ve also had some tingling and burning sensation as well. I have never had problems with any prior flu shot administration/aftercare.

I am blown away by these comments because I’ve had the same reaction. Got the flu shot three weeks ago today. It was a little stiff and sore the next couple of days, like every year. But it didn’t get better and then the past few days it’s gotten much worse. I can barely get dressed in the morning. It does seem to improve during the day, especially with a heating pad, but at night and in the morning it’s awful. This really should be a concern for the CDC.

This is the first time in my life to have a flu vaccine. I had severe pain the first couple of days, but thankfully went away! I’m overseas right now and I suddenly woke up this morning with severe pain again! At first I thought I must of bumped into something, it was like I’ve been punched several times in the same place. I’m really regretting listening to my doctor! I can’t believe so many people have the same symptoms, only this year. This has really ruined my trip. I feel aches all over and especially on the arm. I hope it will go away for everyone soon and there will not be longterm side effects. It all seems very disturbing.

Received my flu shot 6 weeks ago. A day after receiving the shot, my upper left arm was sore and it became very painful to move it, especially when putting on a shirt or coat. Pressing against the muscle does not hurt at all, just movement of the upper arm. It’s most painful when I first get up in the morning and although present all day long, seems to lessen as the day goes on. I was concerned since the symptoms seem similar to bone cancer and the soreness feels like it’s in my arm bones; however, since the pain came on suddenly after receiving the flu shot, and that there are many others with the same complaint, I’m not as concerned about bone cancer at this point. I’ll probably give it another couple of weeks, and if the discomfort persists, I’ll see my doctor.

Confronted nursing depart and they replied flu shot makes arm hurt . I went home took anti inflammatory script and over the counter ibprophen. No relief. Finally stood in hot shower and recieved some relief. Went to Dr. twice finally got a steroid shot. I am taking Voltarin 2 time daily and have gotten some relief. I had my flu shot at work (Company Sponsored event) on October 21. I am almost a month out and still in pain. The pain shoots from my neck and runs down to my fingers. The pain wakes me up in the middle of the night and on the verge of tears from the pain. It can go quickly to a 10! I was recommended by a Pharmacy Tech to use a warm compress and massage the spot, gonna try it tonight no other option. I just wish there was a database through WHO or CDC that we can document the shot and where we are all located at to see if there was issues with the batch we received. Hope yall get to feeling better.

Yes, my arm is still very sore from flu jab 7 weeks ago. I am having difficulty lying on that side as its so painful. I am having the same problem. I have been getting flu shots every year since 1991 with no problems. This year I went to a local pharmacy (which I have done before) and got the shot. I thought he gave the injection higher than I remember getting it, but let it go. The next day I had pain from my shoulder to elbow in my left arm where I got the shot. I thought maybe somehow I pulled a muscle, but couldn’t figure out how. It is now three weeks later and it seems to be getting worse. Has anyone found what caused this? Was it the location that the injection was given or the flu shot itself? Has anyone gotten any kind of relief?

It’s been a month and 1/2 and I can still feel the dull aching pain in my arm. I can’t sleep on this side. Etc., etc., This happened last year with the flu shot also., the pain never did completely go away for it. I feel like my muscle in that area has a pin stick in it constantly. Next year I am really going to think about this before getting the flu shot. It seems better to take my chances.

Had the flu shot on October 23rd, three weeks ago. I too cannot lift my left arm without intense pain. Continuous throbbing pain even when arm is in resting position and cannot sleep on my left side because of pain. Same advise after calling the doctor last week (heat and Advil). I have small arms and was told it most likely because of the size of my arms even though I have never had problems with prior flu shots. After reading these posts, I know my pain is not as a result of the size of my arms. Going to call the doctor again tomorrow. I can’t stand the pain.

This has been going on for 6 wks. now and put off going to Doctor because I found it hard to blame shot but this morning I am desperate and somewhat scared. We are mandated to have the flu shot every year at the hospital in which I work. This year when I actually received the shot I had not pain whatsoever, just a small amount of burning when the medication was injected, nothing to be alarmed about right? Well about two weeks ago almost three now this arm started to hurt with range of motion esp push and pull movements adduction and abduction movements. I was first thinking I hurt it working out but even with rest it is not getting any better and worse come the night. I have been taking NSAIDs as well as narcotic pain meds to help alleviate the pain neither to which help . I think this should really be checking into more before mandating everyone to take it. I work out 5 days a week and this has put it to a hault..

Got my flu shot Oct 2 2015 from local Grocery store belonging to a chain. Woke at mid-nite with the inside of my affected arm seemingly afire. That was a month ago, and it is getting worse. I can’t raise my arm above my shoulder, I can’t recline while sleeping, must sleep (not very well) in a chair, and pain killers are not helping all that much. I have the same symptoms as all others on here, and I really don’t know what to do. I am 74 and have had 25 or 30 flu shots but never before experienced this. I will call a doctor, but judging from these comments, I am not expecting much, I hope time takes care of it.

I’ve been unable to lift anything without experiencing pain. I’ve had jokingly said that it’s been like this ever since I had gotten my flu shot on 10/1. Imagine surprise when I found complaints from others who are also experiencing immobility, muscle weakness, and pain. I haven’t yet found an answer to how long this pain will last. I just hope it’s not permanent…

It is 5AM on a Saturday and week three of waking up every few minutes in the middle of the night because my shoulder is sore, stiff, and painful. The comments here are exactly what I have been feeling… “extremely” painful first night – my entire left arm went numb down to the fingers. When the nurse said it may hurt for a few days… I did not expect that kind of pain.
Since then, the pain changes during the day, to more of an irritation. I have taken Tylenol extra strength a few times, which ‘might’ help. During the nighttime 7pm – 6am I am essentially immobilized due to lack of motion and range of my left arm. It seems the lack of activity causes the shoulder to tighten up, over and over again. I have put off going back to the corporate nurse who gave me the shot, since it would get better during the day and I could plow through the day and ignore it.
The only thing out of the ordinary that I noted with this shot is that I felt it was too far back on my left shoulder, the bandage was basically on the back of my shoulder, and not the side of my shoulder which is what I am used to seeing.
My wife also got this shot at a different facility a few days after I did, and she is perfectly fine.

I had my flu shot yesterday and have never experienced the pain and immobility of my arm after a shot like I have had for the past 24 hours. I am never going to expose me self to this excruciating pain again. Something is very, very, wrong with this years vaccine.

Since I had a flu shot on 9/29 at a well known pharmicy, I have experienced the exact problems as written on this site. I finally went to my primary doc last week and had x-rays taken that did not show anything. He suggested I go to an arm and hand doctor which I did today. It appears that the shot was given in the wrong area resulting with this continuous pain. I had a cortisone shot this afternoon and will see how that works. It seems the shot was in the Bersa. As an aside, I work for a company that gives flus shots and I am aware daily how shots are give correctly. My shot was not give correctly and it has resulted in pain now for over a month. Have the same issues sleeping as described by others. I am not a wimpy person as the hand x-ray showed I had a broken had 1-1/2 years ago and never had it checked out. Keep fighting everyone and find yourself a good doctor who will listen and treat you properly.

I got my flu shot at work on Oct 19. I have gotten this shot every year for decades and never had more than 1-2 days of mild soreness. However this time I still have soreness 2.5 weeks later and reduced range of motion. I do not have problems with headaches or numb fingers or anything like that, but it does sometime wake me up in the middle of the night. The pain is on the outside of my shoulder, right in the center of the arm. It is not only sensitive to movement but touch as well.

I got my workplace flu shot Oct 6, in the very top of my left shoulder, the first few day’s after, my shoulder was sore, that got better, but the pain has moved into a muscle I think, and like most of you, with just regular daily tasks, it hurts like crazy. just fastening the seatbelt to drive is super pain, and so I’ve started doing it with the other hand. I too have had the flu shot for years, but I don’t want to go thru this again, so maybe no more flu shots. Sometimes my hand even shakes and it makes me think I’m loosing it but after reading you’re comments I know I’m not the only one to have side effects from the shot.

I received the flu shot over a month ago. I thought the injection was a little high up on my shoulder, but what do I know? Ever since then my shoulder has been killing me. It’s super sore. I can hardly move my arm without pain. I have limited movement of that arm without pain.
I just read about the Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration (SIRVA) and praying this is not it. I did receive my shot at my OBGYN being I am currently pregnant. I asked him two weeks after I received the shot if it was normal to be so sore. Of course “yes” was the answer. It just doesn’t seem right that over a month later the pain is just as severe. Hoping to get answers and relief soon.

I’ve had my shot administered 5 days ago. First time/last time! I’m so aggravated, it swelled up like a little lime and ballooned to lemon sized knot. Finally, the swelling went down, only to be replaced with severe pain. I can barely lift my arm past my waist. I called and they can squeeze me in, in two days! Really? Unbelievable! I get hurt through the medical practice staff and I have to wait. I can not tell you how angry this makes me. Never again!

Had both a flu and tetanus shot in different arms two weeks ago. Both resulted in stiffness and pain unlike any vaccinations before. Pain increases by evening in flu shot arm and find it difficult to put on a sweater or to raise my arm above my chest. Several nights I have been forced to take a heavy duty pain killer in the middle of the night but with mixed results. Waiting for my doctor to respond because I’m getting worse. Shot given Oct. 16, 2015.

Had my shot from Walgreen’s a couple of weeks ago, went fine, didn’t hurt at all. Thought I am so lucky, until a few days ago! My arm has been hurting for several days & yesterday I developed “flu-like” symptoms. Headache, body-aches, extremely fatigued along with the arm pain. Wasn’t sure what to think until I started reading everyone’s else’s comments. Kind of a relief that several people are experiencing symptoms, but what the heck can we do about it??????

I had my flu shot back on Sept 4th 2015 at my local Walgreens and I have had severe pain near the injection site since then. The pain is at the top of my arm and it hurts to move my arm/ shoulder and my range of motion has been limited. I get my flu shot every year and this is the first time the injection was so high up on my arm. After hearing all of the other people with issues after receiving a flu shot I am going to contact my doctor to report the issue.

I got my flu shot in my left upper arm 2 weeks ago, and have been in bad pain since then. The pain is so intense and throbbing at times. It radiates to my shoulder, and continues down to my elbow. I cannot use it to lift the lightest item. Raising it is very difficult. I receive a flu shot every year, and have never experienced any issues as mentioned.

I am experiencing very similar pain, after receiving my flu shot on Wed., October 28, 2015. The nurse gave the injection very high on my arm and I have had severe enough pain, that I could not go to work the next day. I’ve had many sleepless nights due to the pain and it affects my overall ability to do daily, routine activities. I plan to call Health Partners in the morning to report these issues. I have had minor pain at the injection site in the past, but nothing like the painI am now experiencing . The pain goes from my neck to my wrist and throbs at times, as though I have been punched in the arm- but, the pain doesn’t go away. I also feel very fatigued. )-;

I received my flu shot 15 days ago, and for the first day the pain was awful!! The next two days my whole arm was sore, but not as sore as the first day. My arm was still tender, but not unbearable, until yesterday. The pain in my arm was really bothering me again yesterday, and last night during sleeping, it hurt so bad it woke me up.
Today I have had a lot of pain in my arm again, but worse than it was yesterday. Moving my arm in a certain motion hurts so bad, my range of motion is NOT what it was 15 days ago before getting the shot.
This is the 4th flu shot I have ever gotten in my life, and by far the WORST! I only got the shot this year and the previous two due to pregnancy and then having a newborn. I’m pregnant again and my doctor suggested I get it again. Nothing seems to help except a hot compress, but I can’t exactly hold a hot compress to my arm when working and then coming home to a toddler. Never again will I get a flu shot!!!

So weird that I ran into this forum! I’ve been getting yearly flu shots for about 10 years and this is the very first time I’ve had so much discomfort! The actual inoculation was fine (pain wise) but funny thing is, it bled a lot afterwards and left a huge knot for days. Never had that happen, ever. The knot is gone but my arm aches likes crazy still after two weeks and it’s very tender at the injection site. I have Fibromyalgia so I thought maybe this one particular time it set my Fibro off. Hmmmmm…..

I received my shot almost two weeks ago and have the same arm pain described by others. Even driving yesterday had my left arm hurting. This morning my fingers are numbish. I have not called the doctor yet as I was going to give it another week. When trying to figure out what is going on, I did read a blog on web md where someone described in detail exactly how awful their arm feels. This fit me exactly. The response was most likely not the syrum, but a bad injection as they randomly pick an area for your shot. They could have possibly hit a nerve also. To my surprise this blog was from 5 years ago, but so true yet today. I feel sorry for others, and at the same time am relieved that I am not still questioning what is going on. Now to find a cure. My husband even offered to help me dress. I hope we all feel better soon.

I had a flu shot 2 weeks ago. The shot was high up and painful. I now have severe pain which has gotten worse both at the site, down my arm and in my shoulder. My fingers also have some numbness. I am up at night in pain and am worried by all these comments of prolonged issues. What could this be? A damaged nerve?

I had mt workplace flu shot about four weeks ago and the pain in my shoulder is gradually getting worse, as is range of arm motion. Thus morning the fingers of my hand were even numb so I started looking for others reporting similar symptoms. I don’t have much faith that my doctor will be able to offer more advice than to take Tylenol until it becomes way more serious than a sore arm. I wish someone could predict how long this will last.

I got my flu shot on Oct. 4th at my local CVS pharmacy. It hurt a bit more than usual during the injection, but I didn’t think much of it. I had a lot of pain at the injection site for a few days, which I thought would eventually go away. While the injection site itself is not that sore, my whole arm from the shoulder to the elbow aches all the time, and the pain disrupts my sleep. There’s no paralysis, but I’m favoring the left arm because it is hard to do anything with it, such as lifting grocery bags or other normal everyday tasks. Typing also seems to aggravate it. I’ve spoken to a nurse at my PCP’s office who suggested hot compresses, self-massage, and Advil. These don’t really help. Will be calling my doc’s office again next week to see what else I can do. I get a flu shot every year and have never had a problem like this before. I also got a little sick for a few days after the shot, feeling under the weather with body aches, fatigue, etc. Seems to me this year’s flu shot is really hard to tolerate.

If I didn’t know better, I would have thought I’d just written your post. Exactly the same experience, almost to the date! Received my shot at the local CVS on October 7, 2015 and have been experiencing the exact same symptoms. Initial injection felt different in that I actually felt the fluid going into a muscle. The site of injection is not sore but I have had pain and limited motion ever since.
I went to my family physician who told me to use Icy Hot, take Ibuprofen, and there was nothing more he could do. Well, that didn’t sit well with me because the pain is not going away, and I have limited use of my left arm! I have an appointment with another doctor on October 9. Apparently from reading and researching, there seems to be a lot more going on with this year’s flu shot than anyone is willing to admit!
I will follow up with a CT scan or MRI if I have to, but this pain has got to be addressed and treated with more than Icy Hot and Ibuprofen; which is not helping at all! Good luck and best wishes for all of you to also find some answers and relief!

I received my flu shot early this year, don’t remember the date but it was approximately middle of September. I felt like the pharmacist aimed a lot higher than the usual spot i’m used to (right at the curve of the shoulder. I think he was more nervous than I was at administering the shot. For visuals, he poked my arm/shoulder like he was throwing a dart. First few days I can barely do anything productive. Any who, till this day, 10/22/2015, I am still sore from it. The symptoms now are certain range of motion are limited (I can’t raise my arm all the way up without hearing my joints crack). Sudden movements causes a sharp pain and laying on my left side gives me that mild “dislocated” feel. It doesn’t seem like it is getting any better. My boyfriend had the flu shot the same time as I did and he was sore for about two weeks. His left shoulder is slightly weaker and probably has not recovered 100%. Hope this helps.

I received the flu shot 12 days ago, for about 5 or 6 days I had pain at the injection site that made it difficult to sleep the first 2 or 3 nights. I had my 1st flu shot years ago while stationed overseas, and I got terribly sick so I never wanted another flu shot. However, last year, after beast cancer diagnosis, I did opt to have the flu shot again due to severe immune declination from the cancer treatments. A couple of months later and my left wrist started hurting, like its dislocated or severely bruised. Tried ice/heat on and off for several months and the pain is still there. Heavy duty wrist support helps but doesn’t eliminate the pain or pressure I feel. I have had X-rays and nothing apparent is indicative.
I got my 2015 flu shot on 12 Oct, the four stain one. No big deal, a little sore at the injection site for the first couple of days. However, a week after my flu shot, I woke up and could barely move my right arm, and very painful when I did. Feels like my arm is dislocated. Holding pressure on the arm, helps. While painful, I managed to do a few arm movements and took a hot bath, then put on 2 flector pain patches. Some relief, but not much. What the heck is going on.

I received a flu shot about 2.5 weeks ago. I felt soreness within a few hours which I thought at the time was a little strange. Usually it doesn’t hurt until the next day or not at all. It is still sore to the point I sometimes have to ask my husband to help get a shirt off because I can’t raise my left arm. Other times it’s a dull ache. Good thing I opted for the left arm when asked! Nevertheless, what can I do? Anyone having luck with any treatment?

I had my flu shot 25 days ago. I have severe pain in the arm between the shoulder and elbow. To put my arm into a sleeve is painful and my range of motion without pain is zero. When I received the shot I felt terrible pain . I never had this happen with previous shots. Will this get better? Will the pain go away. I called the pharmacy ( Stop & Shop) where I got it, and of course I was told that they never heard about this happening for so long after the shot.

WOW! As others, I decided to finally research the incredible pain in my left (dominant) arm, after receiving the flu shot 2 1/2 weeks ago. Surprised to see so many others, but also kind of relieved that it’s not only me. But yeah, 2 1/2 weeks ago, I received my flu shot and immediately experienced pain at the injection site. Normal, ok, I get that. But now, it’s like I’m an invalid and cannot hardly use my left arm without experiencing severe pain. At times, I need to use my right arm to “help” bring my left arm up. Certain movements hurt worse than others. The pain is not at the injection site but right smack dab in the middle of my upper arm. It feels like a charlie horse, cramp type pain, that really hinders movement. Sometimes the pain goes all the way from my shoulder to my pinky finger. This is stinkin nuts. Is there any relief out there? The nurse who gave me the injection said to ice 15 minutes of every hour and take Aleeve. Ahhh yeah….No….doesn’t help.

I am having these EXACT symptoms! Like you, find it odd the pain is not at the injection site but right in the middle of my upper arm. Have never had more than a 24 hour reaction to the shot before.
I had a “frozen shoulder” injury on this arm a couple years ago that responded well to treatment. This is similar to that, but in a different location.

I also have these exact symptoms as are being described here. It’s insane. I’m not anti-vaccines, and I’ve usually gotten the flu shot every year with no problems. After about 1 week of pain, I started to worry that I might be dealing with a blood clot in my upper arm because the pain seemed to be at its worst while I was ‘trying’ to sleep at night.
After no sympathy or answers from a call to my doctor, and further research on my own, I am 100% certain that my pain is from a bad injection. I remember asking my nurse at the time of the injection, why it hurt so bad, and why it took like 20-30 seconds to inject. Her explanation was that because of the cold serum, it went in slowly, and can be more painful. It seemed like a logical reason, so I left it at that.
I took my kids to their pediatrician for their flu shot about 5 days later, and their injections took about .5 seconds each. I then began to wonder, if my the nurse had done something wrong. My children had their injection much lower than where mine was administered–mine being at the very top of my upper arm, just below my shoulder (you couldn’t see my band-aid under my cap sleeve). Theirs also went in very quickly, without pain, compared to mine. It’s been a dull ache ever since I got it, and about 5 or 6 nights ago I began to wake up at night because of the pain intensifying. At times it feels like I have a dead arm, and can’t lift it without assistance from my other arm. During the day it randomly spasms to where I can’t lift it without excruciating pain, then it will settle down.
From another website, (empowHER) I have found that in some cases, it’s been over a year for some people with no relief. Others say that after 3 or so months, the pain finally went away. Some have even reported that it tore their rotator cuff and they are contemplating surgery.
There is a government website that you can report bad vaccines to, but you can not even file a claim until you’ve experienced the pain for 6 months! I can live (temporarily) with the ache in my arm, and have started physical therapy to see if I can get it to go away sooner–but I can not live with out sleeping at night! The pain is much worse during the night, and I’m alternating between hot/cold to get some relief, but I can’t do it all night long and the lack of sleep at night is starting to take it’s toll after 6 nights in a row. Advil doesn’t seem to touch it.
I started physical therapy this morning to see if I can speed up the healing process. I will update what my outcome is. I am seriously annoyed that I am dealing with the problem, all because I was trying to be preventative against the flu season. Don’t know if it will be determined if it’s the actual serum I’ve had a reaction to, or if it’s due to an nurse’s error in the administration of the shot, but I am not a very happy patient right now!

I have been experiencing the same problems in my upper arm that I have been reading about here for about 5 1/2 weeks now. Just moving my arm when sitting can hurt. I found this site due to the pain I am having as I was trying to see if I could figure out what is going on. And what to do. I am glad I found this site, and I feel sorry for all of you going through this. At least I know the pain isn’t in my imagination.
The pain can be unbearable at times and it can be very painful to lift my arm to dress. Thank God, it is my left arm. I have had to use my right arm to help raise and lower my left arm, and I am losing sleep due to the pain. Just touching my upper arm can hurt. The pain does seem to move around, but all upper arm.
I received my flu shot Oct. 14 th, called my nurse practioner Oct. 27 and was told to monitor it. Today, November 22, my arm is just as bad. Tried ibuprofen and ice. Slight relief, but not lasting. I will be calling the doctors office again to see if they can do something. I have no idea if this is from a bad injection or something in the shot itself, I never had pain more than a day from a shot previously.
I was stunned, as the nurse giving me the shot didn’t know where to put the bandaid after the injection and actually said, o’h I don’t know where I gave you the shot. I was looking the other way, so I surely didn’t know either, except that I knew it I hurt going in and I said so.
Any advice?

It’s been over two weeks since I received the seasonal flu vaccine and in the mornings I can barely raise that arm. It is so weak it is nearly paralyzed. Does this eventually go away? Is there a treatment or something I need to be doing? It eases during the day and I can use it so when I try to explain the pain during the night and upon waking I feel like people think I am whining about having a shot! This is not injection site pain. I have taken the flu shot for many years and have never had pain that kept me from laterally lifting my arm in the mornings! Please, what can I do?

Was forced to get flu shot or I would lose my job, but thats another issue…Since I have received the flu shot 2 weeks ago I have experienced dull pain at the injection site and numbness and tingling in my hand. Not to mention that immediately after the shot I experienced chills up and down the right side of my body (injection site) and nausea. For a while I thought my husband was alone on his reaction. The doc suggested ibuprofen and ice…that’s all well and good, but the severe pain when trying too sleep is next to unbearable. My 20 year old son got his flu shot on 5 days ago. He suffered from fever of about 101 F had chills, diarhea, very painful headache with pressure behind the eye, he had a sensivitity to light and was very weak. He has sleeplessness and has suffered from anxiety. He nearly fainted twice and has had to have help to stand up and walk.
He has been VERY uncomfortable. The injection site is red and swollen where the flu was given and is currently 3 inches in diameter; it is red, hot, and growing. We have circled it with a marker, so we know it is getting bigger–not smaller. Last night it extended another 1/2 inch or so. It is very painful for him.
We took him to the doctor who wondered if he might have a secondary infection. So she prescribed an antibiotic which has helped with the fever and he looks better, though it hasn’t affected his arm or the weakness.
We are trying to keep him hydrated and yesterday his appetite was a little better, but I have had the flu shot for the last several years, but I won’t get it this year and maybe never again. I regret that he got it.
Interestingly he had a physical when they gave him the shot and took blood for his full panel. We got those results yesterday and everything was fine BEFORE the shot. He had no infection before the shot according to his white blood count.
I am hoping that these symptoms subside and that the shot doesn’t have long lasting difficult side effects.

I received my flu shot September 17, 2015. The first couple days I didn’t really notice any pain or swelling. It has now been 3 weeks, and I have a huge painful knot from the injection. I also cannot turn my head to the left (received shot in my left arm) without it feeling like I have a terrible crick in my neck, and severe migraines since getting the flu vaccination. The only thing I have found to slack off the pain, a s make life tolerable is Ibuprofen 800 mg every 4 hours, or it comes right back. I did not expect to see this many complaints. I’m not one for starting drama, but I see a possible lawsuit. Something has to be wrong for this many people having the same ridiculous side effects that effect our everyday life.

I received my flu shot almost two weeks ago. Within hours of the shot I developed the worse pain which lasted for approx 24 hours. Never in the last ten years have I experienced pain like this from a flu vaccine before. I thought everything was fine. Now over a week later my arm has been hurting terribly at the injection sight and I have a loss of mobility (not from the lack of trying to move it though; just too much pain). I’m on day number four of this pain now; praying it doesn’t last long!

I just googled this as my arm has been throbbing as well with limited motion after receiving this years flu shot. Ibuprofen has been the only thing that has helped with the pain. I’m saddened to see how many others are suffering as well. I have received flu shots in the past and never had this experience before. I wonder what is in it this year that is different than the past?!

Just decided to research arm pain associated with the flu shot and am amazed at how many people are going through the same thing. I received my flu sot in mid- August and I have had severe pain at the injection site since then (it has been a month). It throbs when I do not even move it! I have limited motion, as it hurts too much to do certain tasks. The pain actually woke me up last night and I was.in tears. I will be calling my doctor on Monday. Has anyone found anything to relieve the pain?

I had a flu shot 3 weeks ago at a Walgreen’s Pharmacy. A couple of hours later I had significant pain in my whole upper arm. My arm was very stiff and I could barely move my arm without experiencing pain. I took an over the counter pain reliever on the recommendation of the pharmacist. The pain relievers did not work. I am still experiencing some discomfort and have taken ibuprofen which seems to do little to alleviate these symptoms. This is the first year that I received the more potent senior flu shot. I thought that this may be the reason my arm has been sore. Tomorrow I am seeing my pcp about this problem.

Received a flu shot 11 days ago during the afternoon. That evening I developed a fever, chills, body aches. Felt awful. Symptoms lasted until the next afternoon, however, the exact spot where the injection was given still aches!

I received the flu shot a bit over a week ago. I have always had a day or two of pain. But this time it is still sore and not getting better but worse. Range of movement, pain, soreness, very painful. I will be making an appointment with a Dr. soon. I believe it was given in the wrong place. It was way high up on my arm. All the years of getting them, it was lower on my arm. I am wondering if Wal Mart is going to pay for the injury to my arm.

received the flu zone high dose shot at Rite Aid on August 30, 2015. It hurt immediately and now it’s over 2 weeks with pain and poor range of motion. I have received annual flu shots for over 50 years without a problem but now I am dealing with these issues. Please let me know if there is an answer to relieve this problem.

I can’t believe how many people have the same complaint. I was curious what would come up on google when I searched shoulder pain related to flu shot. I never chose to get flu shots on my own. I didn’t believe in them. Since being accepted into a nursing program, it is a mandatory thing. I am so irate that this mandatory thing goes against my beliefs to begin with and then this happens! Shoulder pain that is limiting my mobility. This is confirmation of why I believe in taking care of your body and supplying your body with the vitamins and minerals in needs through food. If you do that, you will have a strong immune system and that will lessen your chances of getting sick to begin with. My symptoms are a sore deltoid, limited motion at the shoulder joint and now what feels like tendenitus in my wrist. Good thing I got this in my left arm since I’m right handed. Ugh! Something needs to be done to protect us in the medical field. I understand that working around a bunch of sick people puts us at risk for things.

I received the flu vaccine in September 2014. I was given the jab while seated, but with the practise nurse standing. Unfortunately, it was into my left, dominant arm.
A large, tender lump appeared under the skin after a day or two and, although it has decreased in size, it is still there. Following this jab, I have experienced increasingly painful, restricted arm movement. It has significantly affected my daily activities.
My GP has only said that I must have had an allergic reaction to the vaccine and that the lump is scar tissue. I have been offered no treatment on the NHS, so I have now resorted to paying for private physiotherapy to try and undo some of the damage and prevent further damage.

I do not normally get flu shots – in fact, I am against them. But because of a new job that requires them, I got one in Sept. 29, and have had a lot of arm and shoulder pain ever since. Reduced range-of-motion, pain in my triceps, biceps, outer pectorals, and delts, disrupted sleep, and anger are my primary symptoms. I’m an athlete and can’t afford for this to curtail my activities. Tried Aleve and arnica tabs and gel… minimal relief, although arnica plus chiropractic and massage gave me some relief.

Recieved my 2nd Hep B vaccination on 6/5. Very limited in motion. Pain goes from a dull ache at rest to throbbing sharp pain when used. I remember telling the tech “ouch that one hurt”. Haven’t been to the Dr. Yet, afraid of the out of pocket costs, even with insurance. OTC meds don’t help much.

I had a flu shot 5 years ago (6 this Fall) in my left arm. I have terrible pain and limited movement at the injection site. I have been tested for everything, the pain never goes away. In the past 3 months it has gotten worse and now the pain is spreading to my elbow and down my arm to my hand. I wish that CDC would take this more seriously and research this pain and come up with something to prevent it or cure it. The pain has made me tired all the time, confused, irritable, and it’s getting worse! What will it be like in another 5 years? Please do something about this CDC, it seems to be affecting to many people! How long must one suffer with this and how far does it spread? Bonnie

Over four years ago, I received a tetanus and pertussis injection in my left deltoid, which rapidly became the size of a ping pong ball and quite painful. The administering nurse used good technique. When the site resolved, I was left with pain in the deltoid that made it impossible to reach behind my back. After about 15 sessions of PT, it appeared resolved and I returned to doing work-outs at the local Curves gym. It quickly reappeared, I was forced to cancel membership, and the pain subsided. Last Oct., I had a flu shot in the same arm. There was no pain at time of injection. The deltoid pain is even more severe now and laying down causes it to throb at night.

I too had a flu shot in early October 2014 and still experiencing pain in the left arm, shoulder and clavicle. I have never had a shoulder injury on my left side. I am 60 years old but in above average physical shape. I haven’t gone back to the doctor since the end of October, but have an appointment tomorrow. I might be recommending to the doctor that I see an orthopedic doctor, since others seem to have had luck with their treatments. Who has time for this mess, but who should live with this pain? I haven’t been able to play golf or do my regular exercises and my left arm is definitely weaker and atrophied. Glad I am not alone, but do not like knowing others are suffering with this. Thanks for all the comments.

I had a flu shot in October, 2014 and about a month later I was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome. It is a rare nerve disease that causes muscle weakness and paralysis. I’m in rehab now and can walk with support. Scientists suspect the flu vaccine may contribute to this disease. I also have a lite shoulder pain which I had attributed to Guillain Barre.

Got my flu shot in late October 2014. As I left the health fair after getting the shot, I raised my left arm to push on the door to go out. There was a sharp pain, reminding me that I had just had a flu shot. Over past years I had never experienced any discomfort upon getting vaccinated. I thought, “So, this is what people have been saying about flu shots hurting. Not to worry, the pain will be gone tomorrow”. WRONG! It’s been over 5 months of constant pain, and there’s been no improvement. I’ve had 3 visits to my orthopedic doctor, 2 cortisone shots, 1 x-ray and an MRI. I go back tomorrow to find the results of the MRI.
And to think… I had never experienced any kind of shoulder pain in my life until that fateful day I got a flu shot. At least there’s some satisfaction in knowing I will never get another one.

I had the flu shot Dec 5, 2014 and immediately experienced pain which I thought was normal and would go away in a few days. 4 months later it has actually gotten worse! It is difficult to do very simple things like taking my shirt off over my head or washing my hair, drying my hair…all very painful with my left arm! I went through 2 weeks of PT and am doing exercises now at home. Some days the exercises make my arm hurt more and I don’t feel like my arm is getting any better! I have had severe pain in both of my arms, I had a flu shot and a pneumonia shot at the same time, I do not have pain at the injection site but have been experiencing muscle and tendon pain, the pain is so severe that I cannot close my hands sometimes or raise my arms, it moves around from the left arm to the right arm, the doctors have no idea what is causing the pain, only thing I can figure is the flu shot, since thats the only thing different I have done.

I hope all these adverse reactions were reported to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting Site. I learned the hard way too, after getting my first ever flu shot in 2011 and had flu symptoms and a sore arm for several months. This led me to researching vaccine safety, efficacy and the like. I urge everyone to do the same. Education = Enlightenment.

SIRVA
You mentioned SIRVA, shoulder pain and limited range of motion that comes on suddenly after a vaccination. It is believed to be due to an injury to the tendons, ligaments or bursa of the shoulder from a badly aimed needle.
I experienced this condition after getting the Flu Vaccine Shot in 2008 and 2009. My shoulder had pain and reduced range of motion for six months. I reported this to the CDC and The Peoples Pharmacy at that time. I have not taken the flu shot since and have not had the shoulder pain and have not had the flu.

I went for my flu shot in the beginning of January 2015. I got a shingles vaccine the same day in my upper right arm and the flu injection in the left. The next day my upper right arm (shingles shot) had an extremely painful, bright red, raised, hard lump which was hot to the touch. My left arm was just slightly pink and a little tender. However over the course of several weeks, the right arm improved while the left arm developed worsening and persistent pain. I am now at the stage of fairly debilitating, unrelenting left upper arm/shoulder pain. Trying to fall asleep is so difficult, no sleeping position is tolerable and because I have severe right hip pain (I need a hip replacement), I cannot turn in bed without extremely painful maneuvering. I have been taking Rx strength anti-inflammatory medication at night and 600 mg. Ibuprofen during the day. I think my greatest relief comes from using Salon-Pas pain relief patches. On the worst days, I use four.
Everyday activities are so difficult and painful. It seems to be getting worse instead of better. I truly dread the thought of suffering with this pain for many more months.

I got the flu jab at the end of January this year and have had a really bad reaction. Firstly I got a bad flu and as a result had to stay in bed for about 4 days. I get a few good days then get unwell for another few days. This is the pattern since.
My upper left arm is still tender to touch and some days quite painful and itchy. However there are no visable signs of bruising or swelling.
I’m a bit concerned as today I’ve been very uncomfortable, in pain and worried .

Everyone on here has the same symptoms. I’ve been hurting since Oct. 2014 from the flu shot. Been in Therapy for six weeks and still in pain. I had the itching, burning, Pain in the bone, can’t reach behind my back even trouble sleeping. I had a XRay and MRI and it showed inflamed shoulder. My range of motion is better from the therapy but it still hurts. I even got a cortisone shot which was done so I could do the therapy. It’s been 6 months. I see the doctor again this week. He keeps telling me to keep doing the exercises and put cold packs on my shoulder. I’m still in pain.

I had the flu shot a month ago and the pain in my left arm is gradually increasing. I cannot use my left arm to help roll over at night or to push myself out of bed in the morning. It seems to be worse after lying still for a length of time. When I rub the muscle there seems to be a hard lump in that area. Very frustrating to read the comments here as I now realize it may linger for several more months.

Had my flu shot September 15, 2014. Since then the pain in my arm/shoulder,collarbone has progressively gotten worse. Can no longer sleep lying down. Have had 2 cortisone shots in my shoulder, but the arm continues to gets worse. Am still trying to find a doctor to figure out the problem. Seems 6 months is to long to constantly be in pain when trying to do simple things. Just trying to blow dry my hair, or even to put on eyebrow pencil causes pain.

I got a flu shot at my physician’s office 3rd week of November, 2015. My upper arm was sore the next day as per usual, but then, instead of the pain subsiding, it began to get worse. Within a couple of weeks, it was extremely painful to reach overhead or lift my arm and now, 3 months later, it disturbs my sleep and aches almost constantly.
I can’t reach behind me, across my body to my opposite side or lift my arm out to the side more than about 30 degrees without excruciating pain. It seems to be getting weaker. I did not suffer any injury following the flu shot so I don’t know what else to attribute it to. I am beyond frustrated.

I had the jab around December 31st in left arm.
Still left shoulder is in a lot of discomfort, like I have severely pulled a muscle, and it’s nearing the end of February.
I was not told that this could happen, nor did I really want the jab, but my surgery seemed ‘keen’ for me to have it.
Having spent the first 2 months of 2015 in discomfort I am wondering if there is anything I can do as it now seems to be getting worse.

I don’t recall ever having abad reaction to any vaccines, other than maybe slight soreness after the flu shot. I received the shingles shot and booster DPT a couple years ago with no reactions. But the pneumonia vaccine I got last Nov., 2014 did give me a reaction. On day 2 I awoke with a rash, swelling, and soreness around injection site. The rash spread to about 3 inches in circumference with tightness and even pain. I was surprised and even apprehensive over this as I had never had such a reaction before. My Dr.’s Nurse reassured me it would pass and just use cold compress and mild analgesic. Well it lasted for about about 6 days. Now I am apprehensive about ever getting another shot.

Usual response – 3 days of chills and extreme fatigue. Last shot, 6 years ago, resulted in the sore, painful arm, inability to lift arm to the shoulder or even lift a grocery bag. It took about 2 years to resolve. In mid December, an upper respiratory episode, to my dismay, resulted in a return of the sore arm and lack of mobility, although, not as bad as before, and slowly improving. Don’t know what to think now!

I got the quad flu shot this year also. My grandmother died of pneumonia from flu complications in the 60’s when there was a deadly strain going around, so I want to do everything I can to lessen if not prevent flu as I get older! It also left me with a painful arm for about 3 1/2 weeks. At 62 years old, I have had many vaccinations in my life, but pain was usually over in 2-3 days. This pain reminded me of the smallpox vaccination of years ago. But it did go away. However, I admit it does give cause for caution on future vaccinations.

Whenever I get my shot, I always rub the site vigorously and move my arm about aggressively for 5 minutes, which usually eliminates the “usual” day or two of stiffness and pain. When I had novocaine for a root canal, the doc hit a nerve sending lightning bolts of pain through my jaw followed by days of numbness. The doc said I was lucky I got feeling back as some people don’t after that (would have been nice to know the risk beforehand). I wonder if every injection comes with this kind of risk and if there is any data on whether the nurses or pharmacists have a greater occurrence of problems?

I got the flu shot a year ago in October, 2013. A couple weeks later I was unable to raise my left arm without severe pain. Range of motion was about 5-6 inches. I had not done anything to injure my arm. I could not put on a sweater or a coat without severe pain. I couldn’t wash my right armpit without holding and/or pushing my arm in that direction. I also stayed sore at the injection site and kept a raised area also. I could not sleep on my left side unless my arm was straightened out completely. My doctor said it came from my flu shot. It has been 15 months since that shot and I still cannot raise my arm without pain. And still have a sore area at the injection site. This has never happened to me before. But I still don’t want to get another flu shot!

Wow, I can’t believe what I’m reading. I got my annual flu shot last November right before my husband and I went on vacation for 2 weeks and my arm became so sore that it was almost even painful when I walked and my arm would swing slightly. I thought I had done something to injure my arm. Now it’s almost Febuary and my arm still bothers me. It seems to come in waves, with some days better than others. I kept wondering what in the world I had done to myself to cause such pain – I’m only 51 and have been very healthy, with no injuries ever and never any broken bones, surgeries, etc. so I was caught totally off guard by this whole experience. Now after seeing this story on TPP, I believe it was the flu shot I received at my local CVS pharmacy.

I received the quadravalent flu shot this winter (2014-2015) and I had some soreness that seemed slightly but not significantly prolonged. However, what was strange was the site of the needle puncture: I could feel the puncture site (pin hole) for quite awhile — it seemed to stick around a lot longer, even felt itchy at times almost a month after the injection. I will say the nurse seemed to have kept it in quite a long time compared to other flu injections….

I am 74 yrs. old, working full time as a nurse, usually healthy until I had flu shots 2 yrs in a row about 10 yrs ago. Since they were warning about a bad flu, especially with older people, I decided it may be wise. That year I had a few bouts of light flu symptoms. The next year I again had a flu shot and I definitely had more flu-like episodes. The following year when my regular Dr. offered me a flu shot I explained what had occurred and we both agreed I probably shouldn’t take the shot.
As I tried to figure out why I had been so ‘sickly’ the past 2 years the only changes that were evident were the flu shots.
I have not had another flu shot in 9 years and have not had any further problems with illness… not even colds or congestion, although I did get shingles 3 years ago which is probably not related.
I never discourage others from getting flu shots, but like most treatments they may not be right for all.
There needs to be more transparency and honest information about medications and their effects.
Thanks! for gathering information on these issues!

I too have experienced sore arm after flu shot. I don’t take them any more for other reasons. My suggestion is, if you are receiving the vaccine in a Dr’s office or other private place, ask for it to be given in your Gluteus maximus, your bigger butt muscle, or hip if you prefer. It is a larger muscle and hurts less when injections are given. You don’t use it in the same way one does an arm, so less pain on motion.

About 15 years ago my husband insisted that I get a flu shot over my objections. After the shot my arm at the injection spot turned red and very swollen. The swelling was about the size of a tennis ball cut in two. It then turned a blue color and then yellow.
For several months I did not feel well after getting the shot. That is the last flu shot I got even though I have had flu several times since then.

Every year when I would get a flu shot, I would get a bad reaction. My arm, would get red, hot and swell up at the injection site and just hurt for weeks. My doctor said I might be allergic to the preservative that was in it (thimerosol), so for the past 5 years I have done the “thimerosol free” shot and have never had another problem. It is not easy to find, and I need to get it as soon as the first flu clinic is offered, or they run out.

I had the same experience and for the first time after years of getting the vaccine. A noticeable wide bump formed at the injection site (sort of a low, wide mound) and my arm was sore to the touch in that area for weeks. I also experienced general muscle soreness in that arm after carrying heavy things that do not normally bother me and that did not cause soreness in my right upper arm.
About a month after I got the vaccine I experienced what I thought was a shoulder injury from carrying a bag of rocks while working in my garden. I could not raise my arm to the side without major pain and there was pretty severe muscle soreness around the top of my arm. I have no history of shoulder issues and often carry heavy things. I was about to make a doctor’s appointment when it disappeared about 4 weeks later. Your description of SIRVA above does not say if it appears immediately or can be triggered later, but now I really wonder if that was my problem.

I experienced this type of pain after last year’s flu shot (2013-2014). I had significant pain, soreness, weakness, and inhibited range of motion for approximately 4 months after receiving the shot. When the shot was administered, I felt a painful sensation as the medicine entered the tissue, that was distinct from the pain of the needle insertion.
I refused the flu shot this year, but was due for a tetanus booster. I had the shot in the other arm, and had the same type of reaction.
My age is 52 and I’m otherwise in good health.

Just adding data to the anecdotal reports: I had the shot in October, and had no adverse reactions at all.
I did, however, have a bad reaction (my upper arm was red, hot, and almost covered by a hard swelling about six inches long for almost two weeks) after a pneumococcal shot a few years back. A nurse I asked about this said it was most likely the carrier medium, and not the shot itself, that caused the reaction.
Could this be related to the reactions some people are having to the flu shot? And/or could it be related to something in the manufacturing process, or origin, of the shot?
I probably read too many mysteries.

I just read the column about a sore arm after the flu shot. I get a sore arm every time and after any kind of shot; pneumonia, shingles, tetanus, etc. It can last from 2 weeks to 3 weeks. This year this flu shot kept my arm sore, red and hot for close to a month. It’s gotten to the point where I am considering not getting a flu shot anymore. Although, I am 68 and probably not a good idea to not get one. When I ask the person giving the shot why or what to do with my sore arm. They say to put cool compresses on it. Nothing helps. So, I just want to add my 2 cents to the debate or discussion about sore arms after a shot! Grrrrr!

I, too, had a very sore shoulder after a flu shot. I was told by the doctor’s office that there was nothing to be concerned about unless it went on for a couple of weeks. There was swelling and redness. It’s now 5 days since the shot and I only have a little itching left at the site.

In 2013, my daughter was required to get a flu shot for her old job. Fairly soon after receiving her shot at her Doctor’s office, she had pain and lost mobility in her shoulder. She felt it was related to the shot but when she called the Dr they told her, ‘absolutely not.’ Maybe it’s a legal issue at that point since it is due to a badly aimed needle. They did refer her to Physical Therapy to help her regain her range of motion and the Physical Therapist told her that yes, indeed this can be caused by the flu shot. I called her today upon reading this article because I couldn’t believe there was an actual diagnosis for what happened to her! She will never get another flu shot again.

I would have it checked by a physician. It could be an infection. A friend of mine recently developed a bone infection from bacteria that entered his body through a puncture many decades ago. Sure, the situation was different, and I don’t mean to compare him getting a nail a couple inches inside his foot to your case. My point is that in spite of all sterilization processes, some bug may have hitched a ride, got inside and stayed… and even though your immune system can keep it in check, it lingers and causes inflammation and pain.

The only reaction I had to this year’s flu shot was a mildly sore arm for 2 days. However, 2 years ago, when drug store pharmacists were permitted to administer shots, I had a very bad experience. The needle was inserted too far, hit the bone and was extremely painful. Over the next few days the pain grew worse and I could barely move my arm. I did some searching online and came across SIRVA, called my doctor’s office for an appointment, explained the symptoms and was given a course of prednisone which took care of the problem. My NP was not aware of SIRVA before I told her of it. I haven’t had any more ‘bad shots’.

This happened to me when the administration of the shot was too high (last time I go to the nursing students health fair!). I had significant pain and range of motion limitations. First I felt a burning sensation, then I could tell some tissue (nerves? tendons?) had been “hit” deep inside my arm–felt very different than any other flu shot I’d had.
It took 1 1/2 years to fully resolve the range of motion issues. I’ve been anxious about getting flu shots since, but have done so with no problems.

I had a flu shot some years ago that left my arm sore with a knot for months after the injection. Went to doctor and they said it could be the flu shot causing this. You explanation aboves make senses after knowing how my arm hurt for months, and could not get anyone in medical profession to take me serious!!
