Loading...Q. I had plantar warts on the bottoms of my feet for close to five years. It got to the point where I didn’t wear flip flops or anything that showed my feet, which was hard because I’m a surfer and a skateboarder.
I tried everything including duct tape. My dermatologist applied liquid nitrogen to freeze them off and eventually used a blister treatment to try to lift them off. Nothing worked!
Then one day the doctor decided to prescribe an experimental treatment called Tagamet. It took this heartburn medicine about two months to work completely, but my warts finally went away. I have to say this treatment is NOT experimental. It really works.
A. Although scientific studies have produced mixed results when it comes to Tagamet (cimetidine) against warts, we have heard from many others who believe this oral heartburn drug really works. Many have tried every home remedy and dermatologist-prescribed treatment in the book, only to find that Tagamet was the final answer.

If you have a plantar’s wart, and have tried everything else (like I did), definitely try Tagamet. I had almost given up and accepted I was going to walk in pain for the rest of my life.
I read a study on Tagamet for warts, gave it a try, and within 2 months my warts disappeared.

My teenage son had a wart on his finger, and I had him apply oregano oil twice a day for about a month. It worked really well, and the entire wart came out and left a crater (seriously) on his finger. (His finger healed just fine.) Oregano oil is an essential oil that must be blended with fractionated coconut oil or it will rip up your skin. You can buy oregano oil in a roller ball that is fine to use on the skin. We use doTerra brand.

Tagamet absolutely does work. I had a wart on my finger that just would not go away. I used salicylic acid, which hurts like hell and destroys healthy skin, and it did nothing to the wart. I then read about Tagamet and gave it a shot. I took one pill in the morning and one at night. Within 2 weeks, the wart was gone! (I also took one vitamin A daily and applied vitamin A oil directly on the wart and covered it with a waterproof bandage.)

Thats a high does. In my opinion, you should wean down to 400mg a day to keep up the effect.

It’s OTC cimetidine however if you get an RX for it insurance co pay would generally be less.
Most adults need about 400 mg a day at least and walmart sells 200×60 pills for about $10. Thats $35 ish bucks for 3 months treatment while your copay would be more around $4 since its generic.

People’s Pharmacy response: We don’t know if molluscum contagiosum will respond to cimetidine, but we would check with the pediatrician on dosage before giving it to them.

Tried twice…12 years in between…both times took 800 mg 3x day…results didn’t start til 10-12 weeks..then keep taking a month after resolution… Just to be safe. Can cause depression and agitation..no fun…hang in there…can take up to 4 months. Use dermaplast pads by curad also. Good luck. PS my teenager only took 200 mg 2x a day for a few months and warts resolved….

Actually I have medco and they did cover the med of 400mg pill. Many people think because its OTC that RX insurance wont cover it. In fact, because I did it my mail, there was no co pay at all ;-)

My 8 year old daughter has been to the dermatologist numerous times for warts on her legs. They show up as small light colored circles, almost like a spot of dry skin. The dermatologist used “beetle juice” which was a dark reddish brown liquid that caused them to blister, but they did not go away.
The last appointment she said to try the Cimetidine, and gave us a script. But, I was unsure how this would really work and didn’t really want to give my daughter oral meds twice a day for up to 90 days (how it was prescribed).
SO, while on a quick trip to Walmart, we picked up a generic treatment that you paint on like fingernail polish. The checker asked me about it. She told me years ago her daughter had warts and was prescribed Tagamet. She explained the theory is that if your levels are too acidic in your body, the warts can thrive. Taking an acid reducer makes your balance more alkaline and the warts die.
So, the Walmart checker convinced me to try it. I dropped the script off today and did a google search and found this site. I am so hopeful that it will help her. It is getting hot out and she won’t wear shorts and doesn’t want to go swimming because people will see her legs :(

My dd had a sizable wart on her nailbed. We applied iodine to it. It turned black and shrunk almost visibly. It’s been about a week and the skin looks swollen, but normal. We’re watching. The iodine didn’t seem to work as well on the other 20 warts on her hand, but I’m trying to create a wound around each one to see if that will work better. Just a small scratch or tug on the wart. Just a thought.

Would this treatment would interfere with my daily dose of levothyroxine? Is there a prescription version and dose for this medicine? We have good pharmacy coverage, so it may be cheaper for us to get a prescription… @ 120 lbs is 1600 mg correct?

People’s Pharmacy response: You’d have to check on the insurance formulary to see if it could be prescribed. Often they won’t cover it if it is OTC.

I am so excited about this! I’ve had these tiny warts on my legs & a lot on my ankles for quite a while now. YEARS! Forever I didn’t know what they were & when I asked Drs they just blew me off until one day I had to go to an AM PM clinic & I asked the Dr there. She said she believed they were warts & told me to take Tagamet. 1200mg a day. 2-200mg pills 3 times a day.
I will take these faithfully until they disappear! I am so anxious to see them go. I have MANY, too many to count. They started growing around my ankles & have continued to spread to almost every part of my body. Thank God there is hope! I am so excited to hear it has worked for others & I just know it will work for me too!!!!!!

I have had periungal warts for the past 5 years. I’ve done so many treatments (freezing, burning & scraping, apple cider vinegar, wart bandages). Today I started a new round of treatment with my 3rd dermatologist. 1200Mg of Cimetidine per day, was injected w/ Candida (yeast) into the wart, the theory is the body will attack the yeast and rid itself of the wart at the same time. Also used a blistering agent which will cause the wart to blister.
Hoping this treatment helps as all others have failed.

I have been taking cimetidine 400 mg a day for about 3 months for the treatment of flat warts. I thought it was reducing the size of the warts, but just noticed they have spread. My dermatologist seems to think I am looking to closely and doesn’t seem to understand I do not want these flat warts. After researching this website it seems I should be on a higher dose. I weight 148 lbs. Will I be resistant now that I have been on 400mg. for so long? should I try a higher dose, and if so what dosage?

I have the same exact problem as you, I have 4 warts on my hands surrounding my nails for about 3 years. I am 20 years old and so desperate to get rid of them! Have you had any success with anything? I have been on tagamet for about 3 weeks with only small signs of improvement, and laser, freezing burning and all home remedies have not worked. My son battled warts for years. They were on the bottoms of his feet, under his thumb nail, and a really big one on his knee. WE used all of the compound W solutions and even had the one on his knee burned of by the dermatologist twice and it kept coming back.
Then a student at my school told me that his doctor recommended Tagamet and by taking 2 a day (one in the morning and one at night) within a month they were all gone. We tried this over a year ago and to this day my son is still wart free!!
It took about a month but ALL of the warts shrank totally away and never came back. I did continue giving him the 2 pills a day for 2 more weeks after the warts were gone and they have never come back. I don’t know why it works but it does!!

Does anyone know how long this stuff takes to become effective on warts on hands, fingertips, and nailbeds?
I am 23 y.o. female and have been taking 800MG of Tagamet a day (400mg in AM and 400mg in PM) for four full weeks now. Along with this I have been doing the following treatments for about 5 months on and off (sometimes the pain is too much and I can’t bear to to keep a consistent regimen): soaking my hands in apple cider vinegar for about an hour each day, applying scotch tape if I feel the itch coming on, taking a daily multivitamin, eating lots of bananas, drinking green tea, and keeping my finger tips bandaged with castor oil when I am not soaking in ACV or showering. If I am to lazy to bandage for an hour or two I will apply tea tree oil to keep them dry.
You might be able to tell that I am desperate to rid my hands of these and am willing to try anything. I was a nail biter ever since I can remember and I ended up where I am now, which is with wart covered hands. Most of the ones on my hands are small, but there are a lot of them.
The ones around my fingertips are more deep-rooted and have effected the way in which my nails grow (ridges, raised bumps under nailbeds, changed shape of nails, and causing a couple of nails to grow at an angle because of the wart pushing on the nail). Its hard for me to trace back to when I first noticed warts on my fingertips but I believe I had them for about 3 years. That being said, I was irritating and spreading them for a couple years (at least) before realizing what was actually going on.
I feel like I might be starting to see results, but I am not sure so I am considering changing my plan a little bit. I am thinking about adding another 400mg dose of Tagamet in the afternoons, which would make 400mg 3x daily=1200mg per day.
Does this sound about right for a 23 y.o. female at 150lbs? Also, I am thinking about stopping the multi vitamin and taking high doses of vitamin A (or is it vitamin E, or viatmin D?)for a month or two to help make the fat soluble tissue in my skin more healthy. I would call my doctor before starting the high doses of vitamin A, E, or D though. Does anyone know which vitamin works best and how many milligrams are typically used for this purpose?
I would appreciate anyone’s feedback as this process can condition can be quite isolating. Sometimes I can get really down thinking that I did this to myself by being a nail biter for so long, but I have heard that staying positive and believing in the treatment is an integral part of the process so that’s what I am trying to do! Many years ago in 1980 I had 3 huge plantar warts on the bottom of my left foot with many little ones even on the toes. I tried everything to get rid of them and nothing worked. Cut them out repeatedly and put everything I could think of on them the Dr even tried burning them off OUCH. again they all kept coming back
Well while I was at college I got a stomach ulcer (had a brother who was 22 dying from cancer at the same time hmm wonder why I got a stomach ulcer at 19) and the dr put me on Tagament 400 mg 3x a day. Until I read this site I never knew that was the reason that my plantar warts just all of a sudden were gone and in the last 30 years have never returned.
No scars and one of them was the size of a quarter on the ball of my foot. I have been on some form of a stomach medication since I was first put on them so it really makes me wonder. I have a life long friend who is a Dr and I am going to ask her about this. So tagament must really work to stop the leg cramps.
Now tagament did give me night leg cramps just terrible, but to counter act that part I either drank some tonic water (gross) or ate a banana then I started just taking 99mg of over the counter Potassium and that worked.

I have taken Cimetidine 800mg for a few years now when my brother told me he had worked with a doctor that talked about Tagamet working to cure warts. Since I have taken the Cimetidine 800mg once daily, the warts disappeared and never came back. Recently I received my medicine through mail order and the manufacturer of my medicine had changed from Ivax to Mylan, white to a green pill.
The warts started coming back! I went to the local drugstore to see what brand they offered. I am now on Teva b/c Ivax has discontinued making Tagamet or have been bought out. I have also ordered a NovaPharm brand to try. The Teva I hope is working somewhat, no new ones after the others broke out on my arms from taking the Mylan green pill.
I just wanted to let everyone know that Tagamet works for warts. There is nothing in the world more aggravating than having warts pop out everywhere on you and no one can tell you why! I will update this site with my results b/c I hope it will help others out there with the same problem.

When I was younger, about 11, one podiatrist suggested I have my plantar warts surgically removed. We decided to get a second opinion and the next doctor suggested taking tagamet. My mom and I both stared at the doctor in disbelief. We decided to give it a try, since my parents felt that surgery was not the best option. Within weeks my warts started to disappear! It has been 13 years since this and my plantar warts have returned once again. I’m curious to give tagamet a try now that I’m an adult. Let’s hope it works the same!

I did this when I was 12. Totally worked. I had warts on my left foot and they were spreading. My Dr tried the liquid, he tried freezing them. NOTHING worked. He sent me to a specialist. I remember the afternoon was dark as night and raining cats and dogs. My mom, dad and I went into the exam room and the man looked at my foot and said well… there’s an experimental treatment for this drug and I’d like to try it on her. It was Tagamet. I took it and completely forgot about my warts.
They just became part of my life. One day I was running from my brother to hide behind a chair in the living room. I kicked one foot with the other and the wart just popped right off. No bleeding no nothing. Just off it came. That was when I was 11/12. I’m 28 now. I’ve never had another wart.
If my son ever has warts, this is the FIRST thing I’m going to do! I would tell ANYONE to try Tagamet. If you have warts on your feet, DO THIS! What have you got to lose? Heartburn and WARTS, that’s what! LOL♥

I have been on Omeprazole for years for GERD (just found out a couple months ago that I have a hiatal hernia). I have had a wart on my left 3rd finger for a few years, and now have more warts on both hands. Can I still take Tagamet?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me when taking Tagamet for treatment of their warts, if anyone did anything else for treatment such as duct tape, wearing socks, foot soaks. I am worried about spreading the plantar warts to my family members. I have been covering mine with duct tape and then removing the tape every few days. Not sure if I should be covering them or not? THIS WORKS!!! I had been taking my 7 year old daughter to a dermatologist every 6 weeks to 2 months for over a year to have her warts “frozen” off. This was painful and left holes in her hands. However, when the holes healed, the same warts appeared in the newly healed scar and new ones were still appearing.
I was just ready to give up and hope the warts went away on their own when I read about Tagamet. I started treating her with it and the warts started going away very quickly. I would always try tagamet first after this.

Years ago, 1961 released from the Army after being burned, shaved, frozen etc etc by Army doctors still with the warts my pharmacist gave me something (a pill) and walla!! within 2 weeks they were gone. That was 48 years ago now they’re back. Pharmacist has passed and I have no bloody idea what he prescribed.

my son is 6 1/2 years old and diagnosed with molluscum. he had a small patch on his arm and the doctor said it would clear on its own. we went back to the doctor today because he looks like he has the chicken pox now… over 100 spots. we were put on cimetidine 400mg 2 times a day… we will start tomorrow and take for one month. If no results after a month we are to discontinuing use because it won’t work. Hope it works! He is miserable and we don’t want him to get made fun of when the weather gets warmer and he is wearing short sleeve shirt and all his spots are visible!

I weigh 200 pounds. I have 4 Periungual warts, one on my left hand and 3 on my right since 2007. I started 1800mg of Tagamet a day (3 200mg, three times a day) 16 days ago. So far NO sign at all of them fading or leaving. It’s probably still too early so I am going keep this dosage going for another 5 weeks or so. I has planters warts for almost 20 years. It started out with one and slowly spread. The final straw was when they spread to the pinky toe right by the nail. I took 2 Tagamet twice a day and within a few weeks they were gone. I have also used it on my son’s common warts. This stuff really works!

I asked a pharmacist about the 800 mg dosage for my 9-year-old for treating plantar warts. She said that seemed very high and that my doctor should write it on a prescription to make sure it was right. I just gave my son 400 mg doses (200 mg in the a.m. and 200 mg in the evening). After a month or so, the wart is completely gone!!! Amazing!

My Doctor also prescribed a cream that is used for skin cancer called “Carac” that didn’t work at all, only left a severe scab. So I am very interested in at least trying the Tagamet approach. This is the first I have heard of using Tagamet after researching multiple web sites.

My son is 8 years old and has a dime-size plantar wart that has been resistant to freezing and other OTC treatment. My podiatrist recommended that I give my son 800 mg of Tagamet daily for the treatment of his wart. He weighs about 65 pounds. Is this dosage correct?

The usual dose is listed above and duration is 8 to 12 weeks not indefinitely. I have heard that lower doses of Cimetidine are effective and that you can take it just twice a day if that fits your schedule. For example 800 mg twice a day.
Acid rebound is possible, but this is more common with other more effective acid suppressors like Prevacid and Prilosec. Either way slowly tapering Cimetidine would not be difficult and would prevent rebound.
Cimetidine is a histamine blocker. Your body normally releases histamine to cause acid production; cimetidine blocks some of this and stops acid production.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of someone who could not breakdown food because of an acid level that was too low. Off the top of my head, low acid decreases iron and calcium absorption.
As a final note, please consider topical cimetidine. You would need a prescription and a compounding pharmacy to mix it up, but you would avoid most of the side effects. There are other topical compounds that can be made for warts.

I am encouraged by some of the results I’ve read concerning Tagamet’s wart-removing possibilities. However I am concerned about the amount of the drug I would have to take and the frequency; it is my understanding that this drug course continues indefinitely and I wonder about the possible ill effects of this. More to the point, I am concerned with the possibility of acid rebound, in the event that I stop the regimen.
I guess maybe what would help me is to know how tagamet works. I am concerned also about possible decreases in breakdown of material in the gut, which may result in malabsorption of vital nutrients. Please give me some guidance for the ‘hows’ of tagamet.

I read about using cimetidine (generic Tagament) for plantar warts in your column. My 10 year old grandson had three HUGE, painful, oozing plantar warts and 6 little ones on his foot for over three years. After only three months on the cimetidine, his warts were gone!

I had several warts on my foot, and one on my finger. Tried everything on the market (from drops to freezing) and nothing worked. Finally I tried the duct tape (Just put a clean piece on it once or twice a day) and within a week they were much better, within two weeks they were gone. I have heard it is something to do with the irritation it causes on the skin???? All I know is I had some of the warts for over a year, and was so thankful to have them gone. For the ones on my feet, the duct tape came off a lot during the day, so I just reapplied it.

My 12 year old son had 37 plantar warts on his foot, (yes 37) and this had been going on for a while, we tried the home remedies, i.e. the salicylic acid, the compound w freeze off, and they did not work. It was then discovered that my 9 year old daughter had a common wart on her little pinky finger, one huge ball of a wart.
So we visited a pediatrician, who is also a dermatologist. He placed my son on “duct tape” and Cimetidine (generic tagamet) to which we laughed, duct tape? really? Ok, so we do this, and I am not sure if it was the duct tape or the tagamet or both, but my son (after one month) has no warts, all 37 are gone, and he does not have any scarring!!!! AT ALL. He is a very active kid, motocross racing, skateboarding, and he is wart free. I couldn’t have been pleased more!!!!
However my daughter’s had to be cut out, and this was very painful for her and stopped her from her activities (swimming for 6 weeks) and it appears she will have a bit of a scar.
My son weighs 103.7 lbs and it 5’4″, his treatment was very successful, again whether that was the duct tape or the Cimetidine, it worked for him, but not my daughter, who is 64lbs and 4’6″.

My 10 year old son has had plantar warts for about 8 months. Started out with one, tried to treat with acid and scraping and over the count meds. Spent lots of money and energy trying to eliminate them. They spread and finally ended up with about 14 plantar warts… 3 very large ones. Went to a podiatrist and spent even more money on creams and regiment schedule of morning and night scraping and putting more meds on.
Still did not work… finally went to the dermatologist… they prescribed a $208.00 cream that is used for cancer treatment. We had heard about the tagamet, so we decided to try it before buying the cream… and to our surprise, it has worked. After about 7 weeks of crushing tagamet pills and putting into yogurt, pudding and applesauce, 3 times a day (my son has a hard time swallowing pills-so this was a lot of work, but worth it) he is now completely wart free!!!! It really works. Try it before spending hundreds of dollars on other treatments.

I’ve got flat warts all over my hands (palms mostly), face, and now my heels. I’ve tried freezing, acid, duct tape, debridement, Aldara, and even poison ivy sap. Often in combination, for up to 6 to 8 months at a time. They’d get smaller, even seem to disappear completely, but as soon as I stopped trying whatever treatment they’d come back. More of them than before.
I’m really hoping Tagamet can cure these.

When we truly got serious about it and started taking the pills at the same time and same dose, the warts came off almost overnight and suddenly. It was the weirdest thing! He was 9 at the time and had cauliflower warts all over his fingers! :(

I had over 100 plantar warts on my left foot 30 years ago. My wart doctor was covered with warts. He burned, froze and cut me monthly for 2 years. They had spread to the pads of all my fingers and around the cuticles of all my fingers.
I met a health nut who told me to take vitamins A, D & E, double doses, for 2 weeks. I did and one morning I woke up and had ZERO warts, anywhere! I checked the sheets. No skin, no warts, no nothing. And NO SCARS! I called my doctor and told him and he said it was not possible (I did not tell him what I took). I have felt bad about that ever since and so am happy to finally share. I was told they are caused by a virus and the “skin” vitamins evidently killed off the virus. It’s been 30 years and I am still wart free. Good luck!

My doctor read this article and recommended that I take Tagamet for the warts on the bottom of my feet. Both she and the article suggest 30mg/kg/day but at 120lb that means I would require about 1600mg every day or 8 pills. Is that correct? It seems a high number.
