We commend any effort to control health problems with nondrug approaches such as food choice, exercise, meditation, stress relief and so on. But we caution that it is critical to understand that even natural treatments can have undesirable effects. That’s true of turmeric as well. Some unfortunate readers have discovered that turmeric may raise the risk for profuse bleeding.
Turmeric Raises the Risk for Nosebleeds:
Q. A few years ago, I began taking turmeric as a supplement. Within weeks I began experiencing violent nosebleeds more and more frequently. The only thing I could attribute it to was turmeric, so I stopped taking it. The nosebleeds stopped almost immediately. I have always been susceptible to nosebleeds in heat and dry weather but nothing like these.
A. Thank you for sharing your story. We have heard from other readers that turmeric can interact with the anticoagulant warfarin to increase the risk of bleeding. Only a few people have reported bleeding with turmeric alone.
Turmeric partially blocks the action of platelets that are essential for helping blood clot (Frontiers in Pharmacology, Sep. 15, 2020). That may explain why you experienced such an unpleasant reaction. In addition, other drugs that affect platelets may interact badly with turmeric or its constituent curcumin.
Another Testimonial on Turmeric and Bleeding:
Q. I started sprinkling the spice turmeric on food for its anti-inflammatory properties. One night before bed, I blew my nose and saw a lot of bright red blood. It was very hard to stop the bleeding for at least a half hour.
I continued using the turmeric for a few more days and every night at bedtime my nose would start bleeding. I usually keep a food diary and the only new thing that I had added was turmeric.
Once I stopped using this spice, my nose healed and the bleeding stopped. That was very frightening and I would like others to know that this can happen when taking turmeric.
A. Turmeric and its active component curcumin have become very popular in recent years for both anti-inflammatory activity and potential anti-cancer effects. But we have heard from others that turmeric raises the risk for bleeding.
Be Wary of Pairing Turmeric with an Anticoagulant:
In most of these cases the problem occurred when turmeric was combined with another drug.
One reader noted:
“I started taking turmeric to fight inflammation and got a nasty surprise. I began bleeding at the slightest scratch. It took me a while to figure out that the spice was interacting with the Plavix (clopidogrel) I take to prevent blood clots. I often didn’t even feel the scratch, but it would bleed profusely.”
Another reader reported:
“I have been on Coumadin (warfarin) for 15 years because of an artificial aortic valve. I had read that turmeric was effective in lowering cholesterol and began sprinkling it on broccoli. My INR [a measure of blood thinning] went up dramatically and my pharmacist said, ‘STOP!'”

I take high-dose Tumeric, among many other things, for my bone-on-bone knee joints and it really does help greatly! I’m now skiing with very little if any pain, although I’m sure the other supplements play a part as well.
I have no problems except that if I get even a paper cut, I’ll bleed for several minutes. Far as I’m concerned, this is good because, IMHO, I’ll never need to worry about a blood clot or stroke!
Some people have warned me about the possibility of “a bleed” if the blood gets too thin, but I have very little information about what that might entail, where it might happen or what damage it might cause. I looked it up on the web, though, and it looks like nothing to worry about. Hope I can count on that!

Why are we prisoners of the pharmaceutical industry? I have been taking coumadin, which my husband pointed out is basically rat poison, for many years, with incessant INR blood tests every four weeks, or less. Why can’t I take turmeric instead, and get rid of the rat poison? Turmeric has positive effects on my body, while warfarin has none.

Hmm. Many of these “testimonies” do not tell us what other supplements/prescriptions the writer is using. This article feels unbalanced. I take no prescription medications and take very large amounts of concentrated turmeric daily, for years, with no ill effect.

I was taking 3000 mg of Turmeric which worked well for my knee pain. I was prescribed 5mg of Eliquis twice daily in preparation for a cardiac ablation procedure. The Turmeric was on my medication list. The urinary catheter irritated my prostate and I started bleeding profusely. I received 7 units of blood and two of platelets and went into hemorrhagic shock. The nurses worked all night to get my blood pressure up enough so that I could have surgery on my prostate. A second prostate surgery was needed but I survived. Kudos to the nurses at Duke.

I used Turmeric powder on foods for anti-inflammatory effect, until I read it may contain (lead) unhealthy ingredient, have since stopped using, do have nose bleed, ENT Dr said due to dry air (AC, lack humidity, poor air quality), told to use nose lubricant. Still have the areas in nose that could bleed if irritated. May be another OTC antioxidant I do take (CoQ10, Curcumin, Omega-3 or ALA), can thin blood!!! Have not read on any literature contributing to nosebleeds!!

I like Amulays comment. Reading what other people were saying about the bleeding, I was wondering how the Indian population does not have this issue. But the heating it up I think explains it. It would be interesting to see if people did that and did not consume it raw if they had any bleeding issues. I personally put some in my tea and let it steep with my tea and I’ve never had an issue

I have bought a tumeric product sold as chocolate bites. I have this sore on my lip that just won’t heal. Started as a cold sore, or a canker sore. Anyway, it’s three weeks and it just keeps bleeding. I’ve been to an ear, nose and throat doctor and dermatologist. We are doing a culture on the spot in case there is some sort of bacteria. But now I’m thinking it won’t heal because of the Turmeric!
In fact I think I may be allergic to it. Seems shortly after I ingest my lip becomes semi swollen. Anybody else having this sort of reaction? Now, my lip is having small bleeds elsewhere. I’m definitely stopping this as I also take fish oil and ginger — and I know that fish oil also thins the blood. No wonder this thing hasn’t healed!

I have wanted to try turmeric for my arthritis. I have two artificial heart valves, and I am afraid to try it. I really wanted something besides more meds from the doctor for my arthritis. Anyone have any other suggestions? The arthritis is in a couple of my fingers, and it is Not RA, which I am thankful for. Also started in my neck about four months ago, and I went to my family doctor and she did an X-ray, and sure enough I have the arthritis starting in my neck. I am due to go to an arthritis doctor in a few months when I can get in. But don’t want to get on all those type meds like methatraxate or anything like that.

I started taking 2000 mg of Source Naturals turmeric with Meriva daily (double the recommended dose) to help with arthritis pain. I had a nosebleed the first evening, and continue to have bloody mucus in my nose. I also have a sore throat that has lasted for several days without a cough. After 8 days on this regimen, I have bleeding from the labia minora in the genital area. It appears that all my mucous membranes have been affected. I will stop taking this supplement. I regret that it has been so difficult to find information on the side effects of turmeric; most of my searches brought up only benefits.

3-2017, I began taking turmeric capsules, 1/day. In 6-2017 I woke up with a nightgown full of blood, clots in my bed and when I put my feet on the floor clots on the floor. (I am 81 years, @ 70 my Dr. said begin 81mg aspirin……3 weeks later I had bleeding under my skin[thought I had leukemia] so I do not take aspirin). Went to emergency room and resulting RX was hysterectomy (laparoscopic) or open if lap does not work. There is no cancer as of now.
My problem: I’m told the turmeric did not cause it, but to stop taking it. I have read that for some people when pregnant can’t even eat curry because it causes contractions. I feel that because I can’t take 81mg aspirin that the turmic had the same blood thinning affects and caused my extreme bleeding and clotting for 2 days. I am not a good candidate for surgery. I’m recouping from PMR, have “leaky vessels” and aortic stenosis. PLEASE ANYONES THOUGHTS!

I’m post-menopausal and was having uterine cramping and bleeding. The doctor scheduled me for all sorts of testing including a DNC. I stopped taking turmeric 2 weeks before my procedure. Everything went well, and the cramping and bleeding stopped. About 2 months afterwards, I went back on the turmeric. Guess what? I began bleeding again. I then realized that it was all because of the turmeric.

Hi, I’ve been taking turmeric capsules with ginger and piperine for about 10 months now, for anti inflammatory properties. I started having occasional nosebleeds, but thought nothing of it as they only lasted a few minutes and weren’t bothersome. About 6 weeks ago, I increased the dosage and the nosebleeds have got more frequent.
I am going to reduce the disease again, in the hope the bleeds stop or at least slow down. They give me such relief. I don’t want to stop altogether!

I ground fresh turmeric with ginger ( didn’t wear gloves so it stained my hands for days- wonder if that increased my dose ). I mixed about the equivalent of 5 /6 teaspoons of T with about 4 of G. Then added it to a veg lamb stir fry with lots of coconut oil and pepper . I ate it all over 3 /4 days – so I guess quite an intense dose . My rash / horrid itching / execema that I’ve had for years cleared up in a week . It’s now been a month and it hasn’t come back . I don’t know what else to put it down to . I have not had any more T since – now that I’ve read all the info on this site I will be really careful . I did put a minuscule amount of a steroid cream on one patch only – that was the only other new thing that week and I didn’t repeat it as I hate the thought of steroids .
Anyway – just sharing . I’m amazed if it was the short term but high dose of T along with 1 application of steroid cream – who knows !

We Indians use turmeric for cooking on a daily basis but never had this problem because we don’t consume it raw, we add a pinch (just a pinch) while the ‘Dal’ or ‘curry/gravy’s is still cooking. Also, turmeric is of ‘hot’ nature which makes it a bad choice during summer especially if you consume it raw and will lead to nose bleeds. Oh and always use just a pinch of it.
Home remedy for nose bleeds is carrying an onion with you in your pocket. Onion if of ‘cold nature’s and stops nose bleeds effectively.

I get nosebleeds from: Vitamin E, Vitamin D3, Turmeric, Ginger Root, Fish Oil, and Chia Seeds (so far that’s all I know).
Annoying because they are all good for you. I know people will say “stop picking your nose” but they are spontaneous. I can just be sitting there and feel a trickle, then dripping. At one point, I was getting up to 3 a day. That was on the Vitamin E. Chia seeds surprised me when it happened with them as well.

Last summer I took Curcumin for two months. I do not take any other medications. I started getting horrible nose bleeds. I didn’t realize what the cause was until I looked it up on the internet. I never in my life had an issue with nose bleeds. These were massive. I had to have my nose cauterized three times. I will always avoid taking or ever eating tumeric. No thanks to that stuff!

I had brain surgery last October with good and bad that resulted from it. The tumor was benign, but had a pulmonary embolism, plus atrial fibrillation, or a-fib, that requires me to take coumadin (a blood thinner) and metaprolol for blood pressure. Other good news is that I have lost a lot of weight from eating foods that don’t interact with warfarin. I was also diagnosed with iron deficiency and instructed to take 195mg of iron, 1500mg of vitamin C, and 15000mcg of B12. I was also diagnosed with low vitamin D levels and instructed to take 6000 IUs of D3 daily. I would rather use all natural products instead of pharmaceuticals. My PCP gave me the OK to use turmeric with Chondroitin for RA in my left hip. I have read many articles saying that taking turmeric and warfarin at the same time is not recommended because turmeric is a natural blood thinner and can cause excessive bleeding. Currently, my dose of warfarin is 3.5mg and my last blood test was 2.7, and told to continue with everything (no changes in any of the doses). My question then, is there a safe dose of turmeric that I can take with the Chondroitin to help ease the inflammation in my hip?

I started taking Turmeric tablets recently (3 per day) because I read so many good things about it. Previously we have used the spice in cooking, like in scrambled eggs. I had a major relapse of the problem with my plantar fascia the other day which I didn’t think was related until I read a previous note. Now, I’m not sure. Also, the reason I’m checking here, I have noticed a dramatic increase of hot flashes. Could this be related?
Terry Graedon
We haven’t heard from others who suffer more hot flashes when taking turmeric, but some people are allergic to it. It may not be right for you.

To Ann, from New Jersey. All natural remedies for some people will take few weeks and for others benefits take months. Depending many things, for example for skin problems coriander or cilantro takes from 3 to 6 months to notice a difference and for some people doesn’t do anything. Herbal and home remedies do not work for everyone. I think that for turmeric and cinnamon is the same.
Just you’ll need to take it with some fat (oil, butter) and to better be absorved with black pepper. That is why it is better to use it with foods.
cpmt
Yesterday I read n newspaper about turmeric. This spice should NOT be taken with medications, specially blood thinners, heart medications and other bloods meds, and some people can be sensitive (their liver can be affected) It’s the same warning for CINNAMON.

I took turmeric (curcumin) from walmart for several months…and LOVED it! It made me feel much better overall. (Undiagnosed, I felt I had some type of auto-immune disease …just widespread generalized pain in joints and muscles and little to no energy).. this pill seemed to be my miracle. It’s like I just noticed on day that I was normal again and had been feeling normal for a while (I als must mention I was eating healthier so who knows, but I even thought the turmeric was helping my apetite)…
However, several months after I had begun to take it … I began to get plantar fasciitis from walking on hard floors at work. I had to get cortizone shots in my foot (anti-inflamatory). Yikes! I ended up starting to bleed like I had started my period (although early)… and it wouldn’t stop. It went for 4 weeks.. I had to go to the gynocologist and I asked him if it could be from the turmeric and the shots. He said yes… that was probably the cause. I stopped taking both turmeric and shots. I stopped bleeding.
I am scared now to take either one. I just sufferred through a year now of plantar faciitis/heels spurs and finally found other methods to help. In the middle of all of this…when I was worried about my gyno appointment I had the worst chest pain and heart palpitations in the middle of the night… and almost went to the ER before it stopped. I decided it was likely an anxiety attack from being worried about the gyno appt. because he wanted me in the next morning and it scared me. However, I called my dr. the next day who did an EKG that was slightly abnormal, and later had a stress test done. It was determined it was an anxiety attack, but I felt it was different than the many years ago when I had a few anxiety attacks.
I still wonder if the turmeric could have contributed in some way to this also. I later had a few similar attacks while on ibuprophen. Very weird, now I just stay away from all of it. No idea if turmeric was the cause of any of this..but that is my experience. I miss turmeric…and want to take it so bad, if only I knew it were safe.

Wow! I have experienced nearly the same thing! I was having pain in my left heel due to plantar fasciitis – I was popping ibuprofen and naproxen like crazy, which knew wasn’t good for me. So I had done some research and learned that turmeric was a good, natural anti-inflammatory. I got the turmeric (curcumin), also from Walmart, on 12/6/15, and the next day my period started, I assumed on schedule, and lasted its usual 6 days. I didn’t notice any immediate relief of the plantar fasciitis pain, but continued taking 500mg-1000mg a day (as many sites stated 2000mg was the max dosage). I got my period again on 1/1/16 a few days early, which again didn’t seem out of the norm. However, after my usual 6 day cycle, I kept bleeding, more like heavy spotting or a very light period. It wasn’t until I was sort of freaking out last week and did more research that I discovered that turmeric could also be a blood thinner and cause early periods! No where in the earlier research had I read about it causing menstruation, ever! I had read that if one was prone to bleeding or on blood thinners already, to not take this, but I did not fall into that category. I stopped taking the turmeric on Friday, January 23rd. I’m still bleeding some, but my period is also supposed to start its usual cycle in a couple days again. But now I’m wondering if I didn’t totally screw up my very regular and calculable cycle by taking turmeric. I feel this warning should be made more aware than it is, because I really had to dig to find references that this was a side effect of taking this supplement.
On a side note, the plantar fasciitis pain isn’t as severe, but it may be contributed to a better work station at work and better insoles in my shoes. Too bad those things didn’t come about sooner. :(

Hi Tara,
I’ve been taking Turmeric 1300 mg + piperine for a month now and have the same thing with my period.
First the spotting and them heavy blood flow ( for 3 weeks now).
I stopped the Turmeric 4 days ago, but the bleeding is still heavy.
Did you stop your Turmeric and did the bleeding stop?

I do take turmeric for its anti-inflammatory properties. I also take krill oil and several other supplements which are said to thin the blood. My blood is nice and thin, and I like it that way!
However I read something the other day that gives me a bit of pause… it asserted that too-thin blood can lead to the walls of vessels and organs “breaking down” and “turning into a bloody mush” over time! I do bleed fairly copiously if I get a cut, etc., but otherwise absolutely no symptoms of any “internal bleeding problems.” I have an iron gut and never, never have any GI symptoms of any kind. Please tell me this “tissue breakdown” thing is hogwash. Thank you.

My husband was taking tumeric for the anti-inflammatory properties with good relief from his daily nagging arthritis pain. It was helping quite a bit, when he got a severe nosebleed that took awhile to stop. We ended up trying to be seen at an urgent care center, but were eventually able to stop it on our own. As others have said, the only thing we could attribute it to was the tumeric, and he has not had another nosebleed since stopping the tumeric. He actually just recently has started to take a lower dose every other day to see if he can get the anti-inflammatory help without the nosebleeds. Only time will tell.

I have rheumatoid arthritis and my sister is a (pharmacist)… I am in pain a lot even though I take the drugs. She told me that turmeric works for R.A. the same way drugs like humera do. It makes me wonder if drugs like Humera are derived from turmeric/curcumin. Before everything became chemicalised drugs, medicines were made from plants. What happened to that? So far I get no side effect bleeding from it. I take three capsules spread out over a day. It will be interesting to see how this evolves.

I have Rheumatoid and some drugs for it Methotrexate, Arava harmed me too much. I take Ketaprofen anti-inflammatory which works but is a blood thinner. I take prednisolone 4 mgs too.
Started taking Turmeric 4 caps a day that equalled 2,800mg or 2.8gms. It started working on sore muscles, tendons joints within 2 weeks, but not enough to give up the Ketaprofen. After 1 month I noticed this horrible hot red itchy pimply rash in the groin and on R elbow and L shoulder. I stopped 3 weeks ago – some of the rash is still there and a real bad burn patch on my lower parts. Cortisone ointment has helped.
I believe I was taking far too much turmeric especially with Orudis/Ketaprofen. I will try again as it worked somewhat but only around 300mgs a day with cats claw, boswellia and bromelain all in reasonably low doses and after 6 weeks take a break off these for 1 week.

I have been taking turmeric supplements on and off for several years. It is wonderful. But yes, it thins the blood. You are foolish if you don’t research any supplement you would like to take and that goes for prescription drugs as well. Often, doctors haven’ t done enough research and just take their info from the sales people. So always do your own research and back up opinions are great to run by pharmacists. Turmeric works better than metformin for diabetes in my opinion but you have to know how much to take. Metformin is also hard on the kidneys so taking it for years would not be an option for me. I would rather lose the weight and get rid of all the drugs. I am working on the weight loss now.

I started seeing arthritis in my fingers and hands about 6-8 years ago. On the advice of a local health-food store, I started taking turmeric as Curcumin, and now take it in a formulation called “Super Bio-Curcumin”, which claims to better for several reasons. It (or some other unknown factor) has eliminated the arthritis, and (possibly) prevented further spread of it to other joints. I haven’t seen any effect on bleeding.

I’ve been using turmeric for years without any adverse effects. In fact, it’s benefits are outstanding. However, I am not on any blood thinners apart from low dose aspirin. My late wife was on Plavix after having stents put in for two blocked arteries. It caused bleeds on her skin, mostly her arms. I’m inclined to think that these anticoagulant drugs are more of a problem than the turmeric. Having said this, it’s important to be aware of how much turmeric one is consuming. If it’s sprinkled on nearly everything you eat it’s easy to overdo it.

For years I have had lower back and neck pain, and within the last year and a half this has also progressed to pain in my hips. The causes include disk issues and osteoarthritis. In addition to physical therapy and corticosteroid injections, I have also tried the old raisins and gin treatment and turmeric in the form of curcumin tablets for inflammation. In spite of some success with these, especially the injections, it is likely that sometime in the future I am headed for hip replacement surgery. My question is whether I should stop taking the curcumin prior to surgery and, if so, how soon? I do not take warfarin or other similar drugs, but I do seem to have a higher incidence of minor bleeding–from scratches by my dog’s claws, for example–since I have been taking anti-inflammatory supplements. I am 67.

Ed, In response to your question about stopping turmeric before hip surgery: I have had both knees replaced, and my surgeon requested that I stop taking ALL blood thinners two weeks before my surgeries. Some of these potential blood thinners are low-dose aspirin, Omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin A, D, and E, garlic, gingko, and others. I stopped these 2 weeks before surgery, and stopped ALL vitamins and supplements one week before surgery. I did not notice any adverse effects from stopping my vitamins and supplements. Internal bleeding with joint replacements can be a problem and prolong the surgery time. Also, your surgeon is likely to put you on a blood thinner AFTER the surgery to prevent blood clots, and he will probably want to know exactly what you are taking so be sure to provide him with a list of all drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Best of luck with your hip—my knees are now totally pain-free so I hope you have the same success.
David
The big takeaway is that the prescription drugs may not be necessary. I was prescribed a blood thinner after a stent procedure. I was handed a list of foods to avoid. When I asked why, I was told they would thin by blood too much in combination with the blood thinner. My primary care doc said, “That’s why we say let food be your medicine. If you will eat these foods with the same regimen as you would take a pill, then maybe you don’t the pill.”

Turmeric might need to be discontinued prior to surgery. My Mom had a knee replacement, and she stopped taking turmeric two weeks before, but check with your doctor first to confirm.

I have used turmeric every day and give it to my dogs in the form of a turmeric paste I make up that includes coconut oil. This is for stopping inflammation.
I am 70 and my dogs are 9. The dogs look and act much younger in spite of the heavy work load they have every day. There is no limping and when injured they heal heal fast. I take about a 1/2 teas a day and the dogs get 1/4 teas for a fifty-pound dog.
In my own case, I had a groove (accidentally?) cut on the large knuckle of my thumb. It bled with rivulets running down my hand, and then before the first aid kit was brought out it stopped. It should have been stitched, since in the next two weeks movement caused it to weep. But there no more bleeding. Also I noticed that the blood color was a deep red. I have found that things should not be added in large amounts to your diet.
Also once relief has been achieved, then the amount should be cut back. For example, tart cherry juice. I used to take one cup a day. The pain in foot disappeared. So have cut back to 1/2 cup every other day.
